    I am hesitating to choose either Sony RX 100V or this. After watching to the end, I think I will go for LX 100 for the handling feel. Grateful for your excellent review. Keep up the goods jobs.

      Same, aiming for the RX100 VII which is priced about 2x higher here (€1000, used kit w. batteries etc.) bu the LX makes so much sense as a more compact alternative to a f2.8 pro zoom for my M43 bodies and I love the L mono D profile.

    Buddy, this review saved me two weeks of work! Excellent scientific controlled environment testing, that for once is 100% credible. Keep up the great job.
    Leaving A downloadable colorchecker Calibrated color profile would really sent this over the top!

    Excellent review, although it seems too long at first, these 50 minutes passed like others 15 minute review.
    You gave us lots of informations, and showed basically everything this camera can do, and also showed lots of examples both in form of videos and photographs.
    And I am quite sure you earned yourself a kind of medal for taking so many nice photos with so much breweries and fine beers around...
    Well done sir.
    P.S. When someone having "SonyAlpha" in his channel name gives so much credit for quality of the photos of camera that doesn't have "Sony" name on it, you know it is quite good camera, and reviewer gives us honest opinion.

    I know this is three years old - but it holds up well (your video review) - I'm an S5 user for work and was looking for an everyday carry - vacation camera and picked one of these up (in 2022 - $250 cheaper now) - had I seen this video before I purchased this today, it would have saved me a ton of time and I would have purchased this months ago! Thanks for taking the time to post this,.

    Great review Jay. I use mine mostly for time-lapse and it's worth noting that it has no difficulty capturing 1800 shots on a single charge - obviously NOT using flash. Might even capture >2400 shots on a single charge in a time-lapse. It's a very good time-lapse camera for these reasons: 1. Easy access to aspect ratio; 2. You can change aperture AND/OR shutter speed without needing to stop the time-lapse; 3. You can easily attach filters to the 43mm threaded lens; 4. The lens renders sun (or moon) stars beautifully; 5. The camera can write-to-card quickly enough to run indefinitely at a 1s interval e.g. I recently shot 1250 x 0.5s F7.1 ISO200 exposures at a 1s interval for fireworks at a festival. It just works!

    In one of the shortcomings you mentioned the camera does not retain your zoom position when shut off. In the Custom Menu, under "Lens" their is an option called "Lens Position Resume" which will return to the last zoom position you used before turning off the camera. It does work, I've used it on my LX100 II.

    Bottom line is the image quality is great. Those jpg low light brewery shots were really nice. This might be a great walk around camera for me when even the GH5 and the 8 - 18mm is too much. I just wish they'd go a bit wider like maybe 20mm or even 16mm. Very well done video on the camera.

      I have not had this camera for years now, so I can't do that test for you Randall, sorry... I did test it in the lab pretty good though and the camera performed decent with video autofocus, but not as good as the Sony RX100 series I used to compare this camera. Close range was the weakest performing, but again overall pretty good!

      @@Jason_Hermann I've been seeking to buy this camera online, but It costs at least 450+ euros (which I completely understand). Do you know if there's any way of buying it for cheaper? My budget is quite restricted, and I'm stuck with a Sony dsc hx9v. While it's a good camera, it's also very old.

    • @pierreandre5678
      @pierreandre5678 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Jason_Hermann Also, I don't know if I should absolutely take the mark II. My only issue with the mark I is 12 megapixels. But even at 12 megapixels, I think it will be a great improvement over my sony dsc-hx9v (1/2.3'') with 16 megapixels. But I'm not sure? I mean the sensor is much bigger, but will I really be more satisfied when zooming into the picture? I really don't know.
      Do you think there are other deal-breaker things in 2021 on the mark I vs the mark II? I don't mind the lack of touchscreen.

    • @Jason_Hermann
      @Jason_Hermann  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If your budget is very limited, then I would go with the largest sensor camera you can find for best quality. The Mark I is a really good option, because you should be able to find one cheap!!

I've been using a friend's Mk ii and it *does* have a setting in the Custom Menu to memorize the lens position when you turn off the camera. The manual states, "This memorizes the zoom and focus positions when you turn off the camera." Page 196 I think. My FZ300 has this also; they call it Zoom Resume on the FZ300. Thanks again. Yes, difficult to beat this camera. Yes, there are some better cameras in specific fields, but as an allrounder nothing matches it. I use mine professionaly all the time, and have published several photobooks with excellent results. I use mine like an old fashioned analogic camera, using all the controls manually. Its size is very usefull in tricky documentary assignement, nobody takes you seriously, this has a drawback however : some clients do not take you seriously either and wish you had an enormous camera. Sport and wildlife photos are out. I use the video very rarely, but the quality is excellent. I must confess that I encounter sometimes a certain lack of sharpness, but sharpness is not all in photography. I do now and again consider purchasing another camera, but always postpone. I use the LX100 version, assembled in Japan I understand, video better than the mark II.

      Well, you really can't go wrong with either honestly. The panasonic has a larger sensor which will give you more background separation if you are looking for that. Otherwise the Canon offers more zoom and a more compact camera body with tilting screen. The Panasonic is a more hands on rangefinder style camera as well, which you may or may not prefer. I hope that helps? Jay

    Brilliant review. Best one I've seen in ages, as you show loads of pictures taken with it. If this is a fixed lens, is this classed as a bridge camera? Plus is this a good option for indoor low light and better photos taken than the fz 1000 II? I am looking for something to take with me on my hikes that is not cumbersome and heavy but at the same time I want something that will produce better images than the latest smart phones. Do you think that this camera will meet those needs ? I mostly shoot stills of landscapes and things that I encounter in general.

    • @Jason_Hermann
      @Jason_Hermann  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes I do feel this camera would be a great option for you! However, the Sony RX100 VII is far more compact and easier to carry on hikes I would say. It is a bit more money, but the zoom range is far superior and image quality is very close for most Landscape style shots. The LX100 II does have a larger sensor and faster lens, so you can get more depth of field play when close to your subjects however... Check out this article I did on the RX100 VII and Hiking for an idea of what is possible: www.sonyalphalab.com/sony-rx100-vii-best-camera-for-hiking-and-travel/

    Hello~~ just wondering in your opinion, how's this camera compared to Fuji X100F?

    • @Jason_Hermann
      @Jason_Hermann  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well the Fuji X100F is also a great camera, but it has a prime lens so there is no zoom ability. Also on the Fuji the sensor is larger than that found in the Panasonic. For versatility the LX100 II would be a better option in my opinion due to the zoom lens range offered. As far as straight up image quality goes, the Fuji should be better with the larger sensor and prime lens although I never used it... I hope that helps, Jay

    Hi Jay, after seeing a thousand reviews, I can't decide between the Panasonic LX100-II and the GX9, they seem like cousins. However, the LX100's lens light attracts me a lot, while the GX9 makes me think that maybe one day I could put in a telephoto lens and clean up the dust that would eventually make the sensor dirty ... what a mess. What´s your opinion? Thanks

    Thanks for the excellent review. I’m currently considering buying a LX100 M2 . I have loved and used the LX3 and LX7 in the past. I’m wondering if the original LX100 might even be better for me? I shoot mostly ‘stand-off’ landscapes. I always shoot raw, and want more, easier to achieve depth of field almost all the time. I am not very much into bokeh. I almost never shoot macro. I’d welcome the touchscreen and the slight resolution increase of the M2, but the subtle quality of the images having more to do with tonal transitions and light in the image are more important to me. I'm talking as a person who liked the LX7, but loved the LX3. I’m set to demo the M2 for a week beginning today. Any thoughts would be very much appreciated.

    Does anyone else experience a grinding mechanical noise from the LX100 II when the objective is out? It seems to be a rather common thing with mirrorless digital cameras and I believe it has to do with the auto focus or the stabiliser. Turning off the stabiliser reduces the noise somewhat but it is still noticeable and quite annoying.

    So the camera has been out for a while now and the dust issues of the previous model was a concern back then. Panasonic did state that they had improved the dust sealing on the new model. Has anyone experienced the dust issue yet, or is it a thing of the previous model? I am thinking of getting the LX100 II very soon. The RX100 VII is tempting, but that slow zoom they put on it stops me getting it, and the Mark V suffers from too short video time in 4K plus over heating. The LX100 II has a really sweet lens plus great macro, okay low light performance, and wonderful dial ergonomics, more like an old film camera, so it has jumped over the Sony for my needs. If the Sony had the lens from the Mark V I would get it in a heartbeat, but it is the Panasonic that has the lens attraction for me.

    Would you recommend this over Sony RX100 VI?

    • @Jason_Hermann
      @Jason_Hermann  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Well that depends on your needs really. The LX100 II is better at macro photography over the RX100 VI, but does not have the ultra compact size and larger zoom range that the RX100 VI offers. The LX100 II also has a faster lens, which makes it better in lower light situations. However, the Sony offersa . significantly better Auto Focus system which make it better for fast focusing situations with photography and while recording video. It really depends on what you intend to do with the camera and what features mean more to you and your need. I hope that helps! Jay
