Depending on your application some of the Reluctor Rings have a clip that you would need to remove first then you can tap the ring off. Others that do not have a clip you would need to press them off.
Hi Curt, Awesome vid! I have a question about my speedo gear. I need to change the speedo gear to get an accurate speedometer reading on my 1970 Chevy PU 3/4 ton. The speedo gear i took out is shaped like a speedo gear for an electric speedo. Is that right? Can I replace the gear with either a mechanical or electric gear? Thanks, Roger
Where can I find the Drive gear for my 1997 Geo Tracker ? The cable doesn't make a good enough connection and I think it is sheared off ?

Many of the GM car and light truck parts books from 1993ish back through the 1930's and even before are scanned and available online.
You'll find tables of Drive and Driven gears to use based on model years, tire sizes, and axle ratios in the first sections of these parts books.

It's a bit different if you have a 3 or 4 speed transmission. The 3 speed uses gearing that is located in the tail housing. The 4 speed uses an electronic speedo that is also located in the tail housing.
The driven gears spins the cable but there isn’t fluid involved. If the speedo cable seal is damaged then that will cause a leak.

The rear hole in the shaft if for a Corvette The Vette tail housing is different. At least it was from 1982 to 1987 when they went electronic as he mentioned earlier.

Someone please help. If i remove the tailhause extension case to replace that seal along with the speedo housing seals.. do i need to replace the rear main seal aswell?
You only need to replace it if it’s leaking but if you already have the housing off it’s a good idea to change the output shaft seal. If you need any more help Brandon, give us a call at 800-708-0087.

my current 700r4 is a 1992 auxiliary valve body from a 1990 buick roadmaster. the my transmission uses the plastic speedo gears. can I switch the plastic gear off the output shaft to a metal gear and use a magnetic pick up style sensor
You can actually press a reluctor wheel on your output shaft and then be able use a vehicle speed sensor.
about to buy an 88 Camaro but the seller told me the speedo gear keeps rounding out when used can I fix this or can an electric conversion work ?

what if i use a accurate speedometer app on my phone, since my speedo in the dash stopped working, i tested the app in my truck and its accurate, if i give the carb half throttle it should shift to 2nd gear at 18 mph ?

Good question! Yes you can you will just need to purchase the whole kit.

What do the two wires by the yoke go to on a '94 camaro
Those wires go to the vehicle speed sensor.
How do you remove/install the steel signal generating gear from the output shaft? This is the type used for electronic signal generation.
If you have the output shaft out of the Transmission we advise to use a pipe around the gear and slam down to remove or if it is still in the Vehicle or fully assembled you can use the back side of channel locks and after a bunch of slaps to remove it it will come off. Yes about 1 quart will should, but if you're up hill more will come out.
what number driven teeth do i need to make speedo read 8-10 MPH higher when the current driven gear is 37 teeth? BTW the current gear is cone shape all the replacements are not???

How come this transmission output shaft does not have the output shaft sleeve? Its a sleeve that slides on the shaft, after the speedo gear, which prevents ATF from leaking out of the U-joint weep hole.
Some transmissions do not require the sleeve.
Hi I have a 1985 Trans am 700r 4 with a 350 my speedometer isn't working i put a new speedo cable and still isn't working hooked the old cable to the speedometer to see if the speedometer will spin it and it does. I check the speedo gears and they look fine what do you think could be the problem. The code says vss that's a little yellow box behind the gauges but wouldn't the speedometer still spin if it has a speedo cable?
If you would check the gears in your tail housing. You will need to see if they are damaged. Thanks for the reply the gray gear inside is spinng I had the car in the air with the drivin gear and housing off. but when I put the driving gear with the housing on it's not spinng

Hey bud I have a question. On a 1990 350 tbi with a 700r4 transmission, what kind of speed sensor goes in it? The transmission was changed before I got the truck and the speedo has never worked since I've had it.

I have a 91 Formula and it has a plastic drive gear and a the "speed sensor" with the plastic gear on it.
Can the Speed Sensor be accessed while Trans is still on car? I am switching to Digital Dash and preparing to install the Digital speed sensor.

I have a 1984 700R4 I put in my 1994 Chevy 1500 (2 wheel drive) because I couldn't find a correct transmission or afford one from a shop. It works great, but no speedometer. Could I change the drive gear to a reputed with out removing the transmission? When you say "pressed on" are you referring to using a press of some sort? I am pretty much what a lot of folks would consider a shade tree mechanic. I'm pretty good at it and would like to try and get it to work. Also I saved the truck from a date with a car crusher... It was actually loaded on a trailer and and stopped in front of Walmart looking directions to the scrap yard. So far I got $700 in it and drive it everyday. Any advice you can offer will be greatly appreciated. Thanks- Bill
Yes, you can swap the speedometer. In 84 they used the nylon drive and driven gear for the speedo. In 94, however they used the metal reluctor ring and the electric pick up. You will need to remove the nylon gears and install the metal reluctor ring. You can install it by removing the tail cone and the nylon gears. The reluctor ring will just need to be slid onto the output shaft using some assembly gel and a rubber mallet.

If the speedo is bouncing or shaking all over the place that is an indication of a binding speedo cable.

You would need a cut off wheel or a puller. But we recommend using a puller in case you need to reuse the gear.
