I’m taking my Cdl class this winter through the union. And can’t wait to get behind one of these bad boys. My father and brothers are all truck drivers. I’m an operator. But would love to be able to drive one of these trucks some day. Also. Truck sounds mean!!!!

Rode with my grandpa and dad in 18 wheelers in the 70's and 80's. They tried to explain to me how to shift but being a kid I didn't pick up what they were saying. You just made it all clear in a few minutes. Great Vid.

From auto to manual! The only thing I'd tell you is don't try to upshift with the Jakes on. This guy is experienced and can pull it off, but a new guy might drop a transmission out on the highway. I'm a 48 year long haul veteran, and I don't even up shift with the Jakes on, but I know some guys can pull it off. Turn 'em off when you first start learning.

I've watched numerous videos on how to shift an 18 speed transmission and this video, by far, gives the best explanation on how to properly shift an 18 speed. Over the past 30 years I have drove 7,8,9,10, super 10, 13, 15. and 18 speed trans. The 18 speed trans is my favorite. I drove one for over 15 years. They are not complicated to learn how to shift and I always split every gear. I never skipped gears unless I was empty or bobtailing.

Yeah I never turn my jakes off unless it’s extremely early through a residential. Many can’t shift with it on surprisingly.
I’m trying to learn how to downshift more consistently in American truck sim to maybe eventually get my CDL when i’m of age and man do I appreciate how specific and concise this was, love the sound of your rig too! safe travels and stay blessed!
Downshift at 1500 rpm Upshift between 1500- 2000(recommend 2000) i only drive 18 speed
That sounds a bit high to me! We used to shift like that when I started in 1974, but modern trucks run at much lower RPM. In low range you can shift at 12 or 13 hundred RPM, and you don't need to rev it above 1,500 RPM in high range. If I have a heavy load and am climbing a hill I might run it up to 1,700 RPM. You'll save fuel and your engine will last forever.@@relaxingshorts8587

Now I get it. I'm a Trucker from the UK, and it was very rare we got manual gearboxes in this day and age...But I never drove a Peterbilt, now I am in Canada and I am lilely to get behind the wheel of one of these babies...
Now your demonstration got me knowing what to do, and how to handle it. I have driven some manuals but Euro Trucks with Paccar MX13 engine and Manual Gearbox, but its been a while. Only 2 or 3 times in my career I drove a manual.

Great for beginners. I would have loved to have an instructor like you when I learned, but since then I’ve learned so much more. I learned to drive on a 78” 379. That clutch was hell for a 120lb 15 year old lol. So eventually I learned to avoid using it unless I had to. 😂👍

Just reconnected with my dad after 18 years. Had a good few days with him, but drove him back to the truck stop and he showed me inside the truck. Great video I've been driving 28 years and said that 18 might get to confusing. It's sounds like driving a super 10 just 6 more gears. If you been driving awhile nobody uses all gears unless super heavy load. Wow you made it so simple. I'm getting ready to buy a truck everything that I like is a 18. Not bad at all. Thanks Bro! Hell i been driving a 18 speed for years & thought it was a 15 speed deep reduction. I've been driving 42 otr taught to drive a 5x4 & 4x4 by my pop's had a 1985 model 359 with a 3408 cat the only trans you could keep in it was a 5 & 4 because of torque. My pop always said the day comes you think you can't learn something is the time to get out of trucking b4 you kill someone. Thanx from me & my dad for teaching me something new. Huh Who-Da-Thunk-It? keep on trucking my brother. Quickly & Safely

Once you’ve put a clutch in yourself, you’ll take off in the lowest gear possible. It’s a pretty good presentation, for beginners
For the freight I haul 3rd high is a good gear for me. There’s times where I’ll start in 2nd but I’m not hauling extreme heavy stuff

Great video. Reverse doesn’t count as a gear. L can be split. Low low and low high. That’s how we get 18.
Was already covered in a later video. Thanks for watching. Reverse has 2 ranges so technically it is gears but yes it’s not how the 18 gear is configured

It's actually Alot easier than it looks. Just repetition. Took me 2 days to get it when I first started. I feel more comfortable driving my truck then I do my car.
