    So powerful, so sad. I understand where they are both coming from in this scene. Lister feels she will lose yet again to a man, lose a love, a companion, not just money. Her anger covers over a deep sadness. I also get how she can cut Ann out swiftly, pain and all. History repeating itself one too many times. And I thought it was mature of Walker to speak of what she feels and thinks. Put all those inner thoughts on the table. Work it out, making that deeper commitment for the times. It wasn't too many decades ago that lesbians thought children could not be in the picture. Thank goodness for progressive thinking. We can have it all today, unlike these two beautiful historic souls. These two actors blow me away.

      I love your comment, you are absolutely right, I think the same, I also think that for Miss Lister's level of thought "believing that the purpose of life is to have children" was limiting, I understand her very well. That philosophy continued to exist forever.

      Children are not commodities, they’re human beings. Unless you’re going to adopt or help the children (and adults) that are already here, then you have no right to selfishly roll the dice.

    This is a difficult scene to watch because Walker unfortunately though courageous to enter the marriage, just isn't emotionally able to handle her conflicting feelings. On one hand, she loves Lister deeply, but the social pressures, the age difference, the constant barrage of Walker's deep insecurity, and emotional instability, make this very challenging for Lister who has lived her life never questioning for one moment who she is in the world. In this way, Marianna may in fact have been a choice with more equanimity in the relationship. I adore this show, and the performances! :)

      Researchers state that there is no evidence that Lister cheated after the marriage. It is not in the diaries. In the diary, Lister writes that on that visit to see Mariana at Christmas that she acted with complete propriety when Mariana visits her room for an hour. It appears that part was some creative license by the TV show, as the diary does not have anything about that.

    • @kimlinden2280
      @kimlinden2280 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@nicholc7300 If you read the diaries, she had been wanting to settle with a life companion for a long time. I think there are ultimately some struggles and arguments over money (a common marital topic) and challenges in dealing with someone with mental struggles and perhaps depression. Lister is very active and Walker sometimes hesitated, waffled and didn't always get out of bed. Whereas Lister's attitude was to get up and take on whatever the day throws at you. I think they were both very committed, based on the journals. They just had their share of challenges, as many marriages do.

    What a pity that all those years ago, when so many, many children were so desperately in need of homes and families,( just as they are today), that these ladies never seemed to have considered adopting. Surely they could have made it possible to go about this in a fitting way for the times?
    I’m no expert, but I think wealthy people often took on ‘wards’, who they cared and provided for and in many cases loved dearly. I know the child or children wouldn’t be biologically theirs, (because sadly, that wasn’t possible then, obviously), but what great parents these guys would’ve made and what an opportunity to have the beautiful shared bond of a child or children to cherish together. What a wonderful chance,sadly missed😔❤️

    My fav. scene on this topic, was in the church, visiting the grave of the 5-year-old child. Here we get a deep insight into Ann Lister, and her own longings, which until now, we really never see. She ponders on fate, reincarnation, her place, and parenthood. It's a deeply touching look into her true thoughts, and AW has the opportunity here to know that Ann L also feels the loss in life. And it is she now, who can empathize with Ann L and support her. Now they have a deeper bond with this understanding between them. wonderful, full characters from these two actresses, who have brought them both into the light of day. Suranne is deeply touching, funny, strong, and very real. She has many many layers to her, which unfolds as we go along with her.

    When I watched this scene and discussed it with my wife after, my thought was that this was a conversation that needed to be had, fast forward to 2022, there are plenty of gay couples out there now who are either having children or adopting them.
    Of course in the 19th century this would not have been an option in any way shape or form, the technology for AI didn’t exist, neither would there have been any legal basis for adoption but the desire for children wouldn’t have been any less.
    Anne Walker was quite a bit younger than Lister and would have been going through the feeling that her body clock is ticking away, hence the conversation we saw here.

    • @lukasribin4168
      @lukasribin4168 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The technology should not exist, it’s an absolute waste of resources and money which could be sued to improve the quality of lives of those already living.
      It’s selfish science beyond anything else, all for the parents, never for the child.
      And those who are able to naturally conceive are no better, they think their offspring is more important and worthy than those already suffering every day whom they could use their means to help others.

      @@kittygranollers6232 You think that would have been easy? To fake a baby and heir, with all the relatives scrutinizing every single thing? There is no way, in that time period, that they could have passed off an "heir" when there was no legal basis even for their marriage. First off, they would have to be able to legally adopt a baby as a single woman. Not likely in those times. Single people could not even adopt as recently as the 1970's and 1980's in many countries. Second, if you pass it off as Walker's relatives baby, her invasive relatives would have investigated that thoroughly. And, Anne Lister's inheritance of Shibden for her "lifetime" period was also based on her discussion with her Uncle that she would not ever marry a man and, thus, would not have children and the estate would eventually go to another Lister wing after the deaths of both Lister and Walker.

      @@kittygranollers6232 They wouldn't have likely been able to buy a baby and just easily make him or her the heiress. First, Anne Lister had promised her Uncle James that the Shibden estate would eventually go to the Listers of Swansea. It was the wish of Uncle James that the property would eventually pass to that branch of the Lister family. And Anne Lister's conversations with her Uncle about the estate and the Uncle's decision to put her in "charge" of the estate, upon his death, was heavily influenced by Lister telling him that she would not be marrying in the traditional sense, to a man, and thus would not be having kids and heirs. And, Lister was very loyal to Uncle James and she would have honored his requests regarding his will and estate plans. And, this is why Anne Lister's will gave Ann Walker a "life" interest, but also stated that the estate would eventually past to the Listers of Swansea.
      Also, I doubt that Ann Walker's meddling relatives, including those who had suspiciously gained property, in violation of Walker's father's will intent, would have allowed an adopted baby to be an heir or heiress and gain control of Walker's estate. Considering they had Ann Walker institutionalized, for awhile, after Lister's death, I don't see that they would have allowed a non-blood relative to inherit any of Walker's estate.

      You have to watch the whole 16 episodes to get a feel for the amazing acting. One scene, out of context, tells you very little about the acting, as you don't have the background of the characters and what led to the conversation.
