This is soooo bad esp. @ 16:36....the thing is, there was no black or white. Women did not have the choice back then and Marianna comes from an upper class family and it is quite common to marry someone who has the same rank. Money has to keep within the circle... She is not prostitute at all.

They most certainly knew that lesbians existed back then. Lesbians have been written about (and portrayed in erotica) for centuries.
It wasn't in the mainstream. Queen Victoria didn't believe women would do that. Even novels were seen as trashy because house wives would read them and it was seen to encourage bad behaviour. The Brontes who also lived in west yorkshire ,wuthering Heights was nearly not published because of the violence

I've been watching Gentleman Jack and I love it! I a married woman, but consider myself bisexual and I grew up gay and lesbian people and love them. My uncle was gay (may he RIP). Anne Lister was a very interesting woman!

I loved this! Looking forward to the next installment, which I’m going to watch next. I would absolutely watch for nothing but queer history! For someone who’s (I believe) bi and extremely juicy, check out George Gordon Lord Byron, the poet, from around the same time as Anne. He died earlier, 1824, I believe, a martyr’s death that spurred England into helping Greece defend herself. I have a cat named Byron; you could say I’m a fan and I can definitely point you to some very good biographies (or just pass on some of the most interesting bits because I’m also bi and I love talking about him :)).
It’s rumored that they where gay themselves and that’s why they he wanted to burn them, cause he was afraid they would get caught. If you watch interviews with her she says they didn’t want her to do it and said there’s already someone working on this, there’s really no reason for you to also do this there won’t be enough interest. They were still trying to keep the lesbian part hidden. Halifax didn’t want it coming out.

Her diaries were discovered by John Lister in the mid 1890's. Why did you say: 5:03 "... about 70 years after she died"... (she died in 1840), and why did you say: 5:34 "...these are men in the late 1900s..." Something is off with the math. In any case, a very interesting video.

Omg... Loved the video and your way of telling the story!! Knowing what I know now it seems to me that the movie " the diaries.of miss Anne Lister" was maybe a more accurate depiction of reality thna the series... Although I absolutely love the series and wish it were.true 😭🤣🤣🤣
The movie covers a very small part of AL early adult life (in 90 mins). Gentleman Jack S1 over 8 hours covers only 1832 - 1834 (ish). Over 90% is accurate from diaries, although obviously crafted for mainstream TV audience. S2 is set about 3 years later.
