True, but at this time most marriages were based on position and financial need or whatever, rarely love. So I think the sister meant that a real relationship, friendship or more, was better than a marriage for marriage’s sake.

It‘s just so perfect: Ann‘s soft „... Both showing so much love and pain, and confidence and vulnerability. Or before that scene, Anne stopping to run away from her broken heart and Ann taking control over her life and decisions in her hand; and after that, their wedding and them already bickering like an old married couple. As a big history and period dramas and biopics fan and a gay woman myself (who also loves romance stories), period shows/movies with queer characters are, like, my favourite genre. And getting this classical-epic-super-romantic-hilltop-kiss with these two beautiful, courageous women (even better, knowing they really existed) and seeing them marry (as “much/real” as was possible) in 1834 is truly cathartic! Gentleman Jack gave me everything I’ve ever wanted from period dramas & shows with LGBTQ+ characters and more. I’ll never get tired of watching this show and this scene. One of the most Beautiful scene on television. My husband and I cried tears of Joy. The whole setting and the music, Suranne and Sophie ... the acting / chemistry. We cannot wait for season 2.
I was totally taken aback by how this series and in particular this episode affected me. This scene was wonderful. You have summed it up here perfectly.
Crescent I think they already confirmed it in May, I think I’ve read in on the show’s Twitter and then there were articles about it. Filming will start next year and the release is probably gonna be in 2021 or maybe late 2020, IIRC. SO HAPPY we’re about get more GJ!
It is easy to underestimate the importance for lesbians - and all gays - to see representatives of themselves in the tv shows and movies of the day. This is passion-filled, not gratuitous, an embodiment of real love. A greater gift is hard to imagine. It is also fun and entertaining, uplifting, and tingly. Thanks to all involved.
Honestly, this is the most beautiful lesbian love story I’ve ever seen on a screen. Suranne and Sophie were brilliant. Thank you Sally Wainwright and BBC for bringing Anne Lister’s story to the world.
OMG. I NEVER get tired of watching that scene. They are so brilliant together. And Suranne Jones -- so many layers of emotions showing. She's quite a phenomenal talent.
I love how Anne, in the middle of a heavy and passionate moment, made the interaction more lighter by talking casually about her hilarious experience in Denmark. She knows Ann would love that because that's how Ann fell in love with her in the first place.
The Hilltop scene is quite possibly my all time favorite scene in anything that I have watched. I love that I can watch it completely out of context at any moment and I still end up being a crying mess at the end. It’s a masterclass in direction, camera movement, writing, and acting!
I just randomly watched it after not seeing it since I re-watched S1 before S2 came out. Tears streaming down my face, yet again. This scene is perfection.
The changes in their facial expressions when AL notices AW wearing the gondola pin and says “God, I’ve missed you.” absolutely make my heart flutter. They go from aggressive and timid, right back to being intimate. Sophie and Suranne are amazing.
@Los Lobos 1 only 10% was artistic freedom, the rest is based on real life events taken from Anne Listers very detailed diaries, often they even say things out of the diary.
Los Lobos 1 like you’re babbling for no reason. It’s an excellent show. It doesn’t need to be 100% historically accurate, it’s not a documentary. Relax a little and enjoy the show.
This is one of the best TV series ever,I love it.It's available on DVD tomorrow so I guess I'll be buying it.Suranne and everyone on the show can be very proud of it.
WOW I guess Everything at home is not ok! This is One of the Best Shows that is on television,It’s absolutely Beautifully written and the acting not only from Surrane but the whole cast. So if you pull your head out of your #$& and watch You might have a whole different and positive attitude.
I watch this show with my grandmother and its just interesting how she can understand that a relationship between two women can be the same as a relationship between a man and a woman. She still thinks I'm going through a phase, but I'm sure watching something as beautiful as this helps her understand things a lot better. I'm thankfull for this show in so many ways, and it just adds to it all when you realize how wonderful the acting is and how natural the chemistry is between each of the characters. Ready for season 2!!! 😁
That's a really lovely way to go about helping your grandmother understand. Sometimes people don't even know why they are against something until it's normalized in their head. Then they realize they weren't really against it, just whatever bad they thought it was.
the fact that that was the first and only time in the whole show that they'd kissed in a public place where anyone could've seen them and without looking to check around them at all!! this scene is perfect in so many ways!
I'll never get tired of this ending, or indeed their whole story, and will absolutely be watching this season plenty more times (I'm already at three) until season two. What a beautiful story of these phenomenal people, and it's so incredible that their story is finally being told by such a committed team of people, all those writing and creating, as well as these phenomenal actresses giving so much to their roles and telling such a believable love story.
Simply blown away by the love these two actors portray. How can they not feel it as much as their audience? Just a little tingle now and again must happen somewhere along all of their amazing scenes together. They are both rich in their performances and seem to nearly channel the Anne & Ann of so long ago. Looking forward to S2. Richly enjoying Sally Wainwright's desire and vision in telling a story she wanted to see for herself. I love reading the Helena Whitbread volumes of the Lister diaries and all that entails. Big sigh, huge inspiration.
What a fabulous roller coaster ride this has been over the 8 episodes.. Wonderful acting full of every kind of emotion we all know.. Funny, and sad but, always entertaining.. Well done BBC..Now on to Series 2!,👍👍
Forget about Titanic, forget about all love stories, I've never ever in my life seen something more authentic, better acted or better told than this! It touches my heart and soul on a level no movie ever has! I want Gentleman Jack come back to our screens! The Ann(e)'s deserve it, the actors and Sally do! Every person on earth should watch it at least one time in their lives! It is SO MUCH MORE than a lesbian love story!! It came into my life like an earth quake! Seriously, if I can't find a girlfriend like Anne, I will forever stay single!
@@maryfleming3299It's still hard to see shows with Same Sex Love win Awards. Man In An Orange Shirt didn't win let alone get nominated, and Crystal Chappell didn't get a Daytime Emmy Award for her role as Olivia Spencer when she told Natalia Rivera on her Wedding Day to Frank Cooper she was in love with her on Guiding Light.
At this rate, it appears I will watch this scene everyday for the rest of my life. Just really noticed the look on Anne's face when she notices the gondola pin at 1:44. It's this expression of "wow, you really did miss me, you may actually love me." It's SO INCREDIBLY SUBTLE because Suranne Jones is absolutely brilliant, but it's there and I felt like crying all over again because this scene explodes my gay heart.
You have to buy it through Amazon.uk, the American version is the HBO one. But you'll have to make sure your DVD player is "for all regions" or Google a simple hack to change it.
Phenomenal show. And whilst I get the majority of people are talking about the lesbian storyline, I think Anne Lister would STILL be worth knowing about even if she hadn't been gay. Because in a time when women were rarely seen let alone heard & got treated like property or as if they were brainless/helpless, Anne was a property owner, managed that property, mucked in with the workers, travelled independently & dressed as she liked - to name a few reasons. Oh, and didn't suffer fools gladly, especially men who thought they could get away with being patronising or swindling, just because Anne was female. Suranne Jones especially, but also Sophie Rundle, deserve every award going for their portrayals of Anne & Ann, they've given us some of the best TV I've seen in I don't know how long.... Looking forward to series 2!
I love Gentleman Jack, but why is marriage in quotation marks? It was a marriage, not a "marriage", regardless of whether it was legally recognised or not.
@@strangelee4400 Because there are rights tied to that meaningless piece of paper. If I was to be in a terrible accident tomorrow, no one would keep my spouse from my hospital bedside because they are my legal spouse. No one doubted my spouse's involvement in my care when I suffered a stroke. It's assumed that my spouse is the person to speak in my stead, if I am not capable of it. Without some meaningless piece of paper, my parents might legally be able cut my partner completely out of decisions because they would be 'next of kin'.
This dialogue is all so hard to act. I mean, it really needs great actors to pull this off and make it seem natural, off the cuff, sincere and deeply felt. They're so good.
I love my gay sisters it's the most beautiful thing in the world as a Queer being I admire a female being in love with another female it's so beautiful and makes me happy that we get to see representation of our people Also let me just say the reason I admire my gay sisters is simply because when shitt like the aids epidemic was happening they were so active in helping our males counterparts who were deeply affected by it whenever something happened in our community they have been so active in providing a helping hand so yes I love my gay sisters and without them some privileges we have today as queer people wouldn't be possible without them.
Honest love is mad beautiful...humbling for those who have it, searing for those who yearn for it. Y'all rock on with your beautiful, shining beacons of love! I keep watch for the light. Maybe me, one day, too.
Veronica Dobozi I am as well. Sophie Rundle gave such a nuanced performance as Ann Walker. She exhibited fragility, vulnerability, uncertainty as well as some mental instability and did it all very convincingly. Kudos to one so young for bringing the gravitas to this role that it deserved. I sincerely hope Sophie is rewarded come BAFTA time!!
Give Suranne Jones all the awards in this planet! And thank you Anne Lister! you wrote those diaries 200 years ago and we owe you the best representation of lesbian love in the history of television
Sally Wainwright hits it out of the park yet again, the lead actresses are exceptional. Heck, all the acting is phenomenal. An intense, important love story told with grace and excellence. Thank you, BBC.
There's something about how Anne looking rather unkempt and being emotionally distraught here that really has my heart aflutter. I honestly can't explain it but the way she looks and acts in this scene, being so openly vulnerable, well, it's the most handsome, beguiling, and devastating she's ever been throughout the whole series.
I mean just imagine one day you clean your house, find out a diary belongs to your great great great grandma's sister who was gay, had a freaking badass lifestyle and such gorgeous wife.
One of the most beautiful love stories I've witnessed in television. I was genuinely invested in both of them as characters. I really wish there was a third season to see their life together.
This five minutes and forty two seconds are just sublime. No words to describe, this series took my heart. Thank you Suranne and Sophie! Thank you Sally!
I've been watching this scene and repeating like 10000x and it never gets old. It's so beautiful and ah... I can't even explain how this show means to me and all the LGBTQ community. Thanks for everything Sally Wainwright, the cast and crew, BBC One. ❤️ Best lesbian drama EVER. I'm still crying and I can't wait for second season.
The entire episode of the season finale was exquisite - this scene was the best of the episode - Emmy worthy to be sure. Ann Walker's whimpering was a bit over the top throughout but she pulled herself together at the end and emerged in charge and intact. A stupendous series with Suranne Jones clearly relishing the role.
You’re not the only one who was disappointed. I cannot fathom how Suranne Jones didn’t get an Emmy nomination as best actress in a drama series. She absolutely embodied Anne Lister; she owned the role and the range of emotions she had to portray is phenomenal. I think an injustice has been done. Let’s hope the BAFTAs correct this injustice
The most beautiful love story I've ever watched! Gentleman Jack is an outstanding show all round but this scene is everything. Sophie is wonderful and Suranne is an absolute legend, she was born to play Anne Lister.
I have experienced very few scenes in any T.V show or movie that are this powerful and beautiful...gay, straight or otherwise. Brava! The orchestral music absolutely sealed it!
This is without a doubt the best written, staged and acted scene I have ever seen (and I have watched it about a 100 times!). I love each "mmh" and every second of it! Can't wait for S2 to be released in Germany!🌈 ❤🎩!!!
I'm an empath, I'm picky about what I watch because I can't get properly invested in something if the acting (or writing for books) comes across as ingenuine. I've lost count of how many times I've watched this clip because I can feel the characters' emotions and mood shifts throughout the entire scene, the acting is SO GOOD, some of the best I have ever seen. Especially Suranne Jones; I can read Anne Lister's thoughts in her face and body language, every time she wants to give in to her love for Ann but then literally steps away from her because she's afraid of being hurt, how she distracts Ann from noticing how upset she is at being just 'a friendship' to her or dwelling on her slashed wrist by telling self-deprecating stories about herself. The way she plays a strong character who is on the verge of falling apart and trying to hide it is masterful; that little noise she makes after Ann says she 'wouldn't say no' has more emotional conveyance in it than some entire actor's monologues. So incredible.
more than one million views, totally deserved.🥳🥳🥳 It' such a powerful story and having Suranne Jones and Sophie Rundle, for Anne Lister and Ann Walker is truly a gift. Fantastic actresses, and the intensity of their chemistry is stunning.
Must be those homophobic who left lots of comments down this clip. They must have too much free time in their 👐 and parochial. That's a word that I learned from this series. 😉
That noise Suranne Jones makes, drives me insane and i'm straight! She was wonderful in this part and should have won every award going. Sophie Rundle was just perfect too. Her Yorkshire accent is outrageously accurate. This is the best serial drama I've seen in years. Can't wait for the next series and see what Miss Lister gets up to next. 🥰
I just finished this show and I fell in love with both ladies, the strength that Ann grows into from the shy girl she was, the Calmness that Anne gains from her time with Ann is so amazing! I am all teary eyed again just watching this! This show will stay with me forever, its...helped me find comfort in my life. I hope this shows receives many accolades from many award shows! Anne Lister is going down on my list of biographies to read now! This show has helped me find strength and fortitude in my own sexuality and internal focus on what I can find in someone one day.
Suranne Jones as Anne Lister is a breathtaking character and an extremely attractive woman who dominates the whole screen ..if Sophie wasn’t such a great actress performing Ann with such tenderness, weakness but also with such grace and humility, the screen would totally absorb her.....instead she’s everywhere..all over..firmly present and devoted..Gosh..the two of them together are just adorable ....
Still....after re-watching this clip months later....it is the most romantic scene I have seen in a very long while, if not ever. Absolutely brilliant . 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
They both balanced up really good.. I admire Anne Lister for her positive, tough and charismatic character.. it must be tough especially in the old time. Looking forward for season 2!!
I am just so happy this show exists. I’m so happy Suranne Jones and sophie Rundle has the parts as they really portrayed them brilliantly. So beautifully written and everything! I cannot fault this series. I’m enamoured with it all and I can’t wait for season 2!!!
Fabulous show, and a wonderful performance by Suranne Jones. They brought a fascinating woman to life and did her justice. Especially loved the looks to camera, some of them were hilarious! And did you notice, in the last scene, she finally wore something other than black ... she was no longer in mourning. Great job from beginning to end, well done Sally Wainwright, Suranne, the BBC and everyone involved!
Looooove this show. Suranne and Sophie are perfectly cast. Such a refreshing series with superb character depth + great pacing. Looking forward for the next season!
Just watched this for the first time in months and it still kills me with its beauty. I still.cry. There is no scene that comes close. Thank God this scene exists.
Couldn't wait for catch up, had to watch it live. Never never disappointed. And as for the finale/climax episode- Oh wow!, using fast paced action coming from opposite sides of the North Sea they manage to fit it all in and slow it down to one of THE most heart wrenching love scenes, followed by some very amusing 'newly wed' chit chat!. Wuthering Heights? Eat your heart out Heathcliffe, Anne is here. Well done all. (And yes I admit, I did shed a tear ok! ) (or maybe two)
I love this show and these two ladies are great in this. Can't believe I have to wait for two years for the next season. Hopefully it will be earlier than that.
I have just recently found out about this show, and I must say I'm completely in love with it. The performances, the story, such beautiful representations of strong women, so important for the lesbian history. Thank you! Can't wait for season 2.
Good lord! The fireworks I feel in my stomach everytime I watch this scene is unexplainable. Wow! My gay heart can't handle this. So beautiful and emotionally portrayed.
They can keep that Bridgerton nonsense. Give me GentleMan Jack. The writing, the humor, the 4rth wall acting, the wardrobe. Phenomenal.

When she says ‘don’t hurt me’ I think we’ve all wanted to be that vulnerable with a woman we were in love with but never had the guts.
Great analysis
In addition, LGBTQ representation means so MUCH more to gay viewers who live in homophobic countries. These shows save lives. 👍🏽

@@taramtatamnow I actually loved the fact that Anne was deeply religious and she always said that she was as God made her. How right she was.
Yes!! It rejuvenated my belief in love and will go down onto the list of my all time favourites!💜
Honestly, this is the most beautiful lesbian love story I’ve ever seen on a screen. Suranne and Sophie were brilliant. Thank you Sally Wainwright and BBC for bringing Anne Lister’s story to the world.
Heart, humour and superb acting by all, loved this show can't wait for Series 2.
Get a life you troll!
OMG. I NEVER get tired of watching that scene. They are so brilliant together. And Suranne Jones -- so many layers of emotions showing. She's quite a phenomenal talent.
“I always have been”. Such simple words, so beautifully delivered.
I love how Anne, in the middle of a heavy and passionate moment, made the interaction more lighter by talking casually about her hilarious experience in Denmark. She knows Ann would love that because that's how Ann fell in love with her in the first place.
Scène exceptionnellement touchante
I am not even ashamed to admit that this will be on repeat for me until 2021 !!!!!
slytherinheir yep, I’m doing the same.
Same here
BBC please don't give up on this show, it means so much to see this story
The Hilltop scene is quite possibly my all time favorite scene in anything that I have watched. I love that I can watch it completely out of context at any moment and I still end up being a crying mess at the end. It’s a masterclass in direction, camera movement, writing, and acting!
I just randomly watched it after not seeing it since I re-watched S1 before S2 came out. Tears streaming down my face, yet again. This scene is perfection.
Anne Lister was a pioneer Badass ! Go read her biography.
i have read 3 books on her so far and i'm reading a 4th one right now. her story and their relationship is truly fascinating.
@@ArtGeek2817 what's book name?
Ironic...motives, money, haha
@Needles IblisShe was ahead of her time. Anne did things in her time that was inconceivable to most women. Like 'marriage' to a woman.
@Needles Iblis Oooh you're one of those. Okay, read Anne's biography.
The changes in their facial expressions when AL notices AW wearing the gondola pin and says “God, I’ve missed you.” absolutely make my heart flutter. They go from aggressive and timid, right back to being intimate. Sophie and Suranne are amazing.
I haven't watched this show yet, but this clip made me sob like a little girl! Looks like an absolutely gorgeous love story! :) Well done!
giligara30492 omg you HAVE to see this show!!!!
@Los Lobos 1 disagree with you ,the breaking the fourth wall bits are taken from the diaries 😉😉
@@bsce100 couldnt have put it better myself 💖

@@palmertreese1363 Nice one, that's a good price too. Thanks for your reply.
What a Brilliant series. The best love scene ever. I cried yet again. Perfect casting.

Ehehe..Same..
Linda Dunbar You are lucky you saw it
Forget about Titanic, forget about all love stories, I've never ever in my life seen something more authentic, better acted or better told than this! Seriously, if I can't find a girlfriend like Anne, I will forever stay single!
right HANDS UP.........Whos watched this scene more than 20 times.....!!!!!!
meeee
i have watched it 100 times :)
Just hope Suranne picks up every award going, she's just brilliant,Sophie Rundle also 👍❤
kemmayr Suranne and Sophie should have beenNOMINATED for an Emmy. The Show also should have been NOMINATED.
It's this expression of "wow, you really did miss me, you may actually love me." It's SO INCREDIBLY SUBTLE because Suranne Jones is absolutely brilliant, but it's there and I felt like crying all over again because this scene explodes my gay heart.
for the love of god, please BBC: make sure you include all the deleted scenes on the Blu ray for us Americans!!!!!!
take5breaths you guys had a two minute or so scene missing in the last ep where Lister is on the ship back writing a letter then throwing up
☝️ This!!! Please. Thank you 🙏🏼
Ropsana Khanom but extra scenes in every episode- an important one from episode4 and 7
You have to buy it through Amazon.uk, the American version is the HBO one. But you'll have to make sure your DVD player is "for all regions" or Google a simple hack to change it.
What deleted scenes ?
Well said!! A marriage is in the heart. Not on some piece of paper issued by some mindless government official.
@@mfjdv2020
So why fight so hard for that meaningless piece of paper? I thought you were all for gay marriage to be legitimised by a government?
@@strangelee4400 So it's equal and we dont have to hide also taxes
@strange lee and so also couples that have been together forever are listed as each other’s emergency contact and next of kin, legally
I love my gay sisters it's the most beautiful thing in the world as a Queer being I admire a female being in love with another female it's so beautiful and makes me happy that we get to see representation of our people
Also let me just say the reason I admire my gay sisters is simply because when shitt like the aids epidemic was happening they were so active in helping our males counterparts who were deeply affected by it whenever something happened in our community they have been so active in providing a helping hand so yes I love my gay sisters and without them some privileges we have today as queer people wouldn't be possible without them.
And gay male love is beautiful too, coming from a lesbian:)
Honest love is mad beautiful...humbling for those who have it, searing for those who yearn for it. Y'all rock on with your beautiful, shining beacons of love! I keep watch for the light. Maybe me, one day, too.

I am in love with walker
They are so beautiful together not "carol" the movie chemistry but quite intriguing 🤷♀️❤❤them.
Jones is hot, without question-- but Rundle's face so wonderful to look at.
I sincerely hope Sophie is rewarded come BAFTA time!!
actualy i love Anne Walker the most..
The way Anne says “good lord” always kills me 😂
Give Suranne Jones all the awards in this planet!
One of the very few videos or shows I've ever nearly cried for. Well done. Well done indeed.
I love that Ann is the calm one here while Anne is being vulnerable 💕
There's something about how Anne looking rather unkempt and being emotionally distraught here that really has my heart aflutter. I honestly can't explain it but the way she looks and acts in this scene, being so openly vulnerable, well, it's the most handsome, beguiling, and devastating she's ever been throughout the whole series.
I am a straight man and I love this scene. Two women expressing their love for each other.
Thank you Sally!
that second quiet yes at 4:10 melts my heart every single time!
Yes, Suranne Jones is absolutely superb!!
A little annoyed that Gentleman Jack and Suranne orSophie received NO RECOGNITION for their OUTSTANDING Performance.
Best show on Television !!
Amen to that
I think the amount of times I've come back to watch this video, has passed the point where it's healthy...
You're not alone, and I own the DVD. But sometimes I just need this scene.
It's been years since I first watched Gentleman Jack, and this scene makes me cry every single time.
same here, Catrina. IT such a beautiful and heartfelt scene.
This is without a doubt the best written, staged and acted scene I have ever seen (and I have watched it about a 100 times!). I love each "mmh" and every second of it! Can't wait for S2 to be released in Germany!🌈 ❤🎩!!!
I've watched this scene a hundred or so times now. It's truly the most heartfelt romantic scene ever on the screen in my opinion. Simply beautiful...

6 times now... or probably more?!!!
Me!
One of the most beautiful moments! I don’t get it why ppl “dislike “ it
Must be those homophobic who left lots of comments down this clip.
We can stop creating romance stories, guys; someone finally made the perfect one
Thank you BBC for uploading this scene. I cried twice in a row. 😭😭😭
