I had a coworker whose wife was a nurse. She took on the job of full time nurse for a wealthy older woman that had only a couple of months left to live. She nursed the woman back to health and became her traveling companion. They went everywhere. My coworker was welcome on all the trips. He would use all his vacation time to go on trips. Now the good part. All of the grand kid's and some of the other relatives were extremely mad that she was alive. She was worth millions. I retired and knew she had been alive eight years after she was supposed to be dead. Still traveling.

Story 3 reminded me of another one where OP's daughter abandoned him while he was fighting cancer. Years later, she came to his old house, expecting it to be hers now, only to find out OP was alive and well, having defeated the cancer, sold the house, and that he was going to spend all his money on himself for the remainder of his life (he was in his 60s) and not leave a single cent to her.

The way that entitled people show their true colors when someone close to them dies absolutely horrifies me every time. I remember when my grandmother died, my parents, aunts, and uncles all turned into a bunch of vultures, fighting with each other to walk away with as much profit as possible. I still have to sue my own parents one day because they spent years working with slimy lawyers to gain possession over mine and my brother's inheritance left by my grandfather when he passed.

You may want to consult with a lawyer and find out what the statute of limitations are for that sort of lawsuit. From what I understand, you can only bring lawsuits within a certain time frame, usually somewhere around 3-5 years of when the action that you are suing over happened. So if you wait on it for too long you may not be able to sue them at all.

Story 2: I hope Phil considers making some changes to his will given the attitude of SIL.
Personally, I'd be telling SIL that she has three options:
    1. Keep her mouth shut about how I spend MY hard earned money, apologize in front of the whole family for her rude entitled bratty behavior and actually mean the apology, stop demanding more money for trips/extras that are not needed, and I will leave her section of my will intact and continue to fund her schooling.
    2. She stops complaining about how I spend my money, doesn't apologize in front of the whole family for her rude entitled bratty behavior, and I will cut a cheque for what the remainder of her schooling, rent, and basic monthly expenses will be for her to finish her schooling plus 3 months of rent in an average apartment, and this will be the last bit of money that I will give her until my will is read.
    3. She continues as she has with the complaints about how I spend my money, doesn't apologize, continues to demand more money, and I will cut off the free money supply and instead give her 1 month of school fees/rent/expenses, and then she is FULLY cut off ALL financial support from me & I will be seriously considering changes to my will about who gets what IF anything at all.
A good lesson is to not bite the hand that feeds/clothes/provides everything you need.
Story 3: OP needs to talk to their dad about putting a clause in their will about how if they are killed by one of their children or someone working on their behalf, then the other child gets the FULL inheritance.

The last story makes my blood boil🤬🤬🤬 As a mother I can say 100% that it's my responsibility to provide and care for my children since it was my choice to have them (even step children are a choice one makes knowing that the significant other has children). It, however, is not the responsibility of the child, to provide and care for a parent, step parent, siblings, half siblings or step siblings. I feel that any parent, step parent or any adult really, to say that since they took care of the child, now that the child has money, should take care of them are f*cking stupid. Again as a mother myself I feel very strongly about this and wish that stupid adults wouldn't mentally or emotionally abused their children/step children as has been done in this story.

I always hate how so many families start fighting over money and ignore the intentions of the loved one who died just so they can get a few dollars more. I've seen it in my own extended family, and watched how an entitled grt aunt screwed over my uncle who was going to buy the family home (costing him Thousands due to having to back out of another agreement), just to try and sell the home for $45,000 more than he offered for the home (which was still a fair market value), but due to repairs that were needed, they ended up with $30,000 less than what my uncle offered with a "As Is" contract. My Grandmother was actually quite happy that her sisters got that Karma. I'm also quite glad my more immediate family wasn't anything like this when my Grandmother passed. Due to the family being spread out across several states, The best time for all of us to get together over dividing up the smaller assets was the day of the funeral. I still feel like a vulture having gone through the house that same day, but it was logically the only time we would all be able to be together to do this. I'm just glad there was no fighting over things, it was more like everyone was trying to get everyone else to take stuff. No you take it, No you get that, She wanted you to have, Are you sure? I don't think I could have handled and greed on that day.

These Will stories are soooooo sad. My Dad's will was loosey goosey. Us four just sat around the table and said "Do you want this or that? Some items were worth thousands. The response was often "Well maybe, but I don't want it if you want it," only to get the same "Well I don't want it if you want it so you take it." It would go back and forth you take it, no you take it till one would acquiesce and say, "Okay, yes I want it." That was that and we would move on to something else, rinse and repeat. We even included a sister who had been adopted by a Stepfather and hadn't been legally our sister in more than 30 years. Nobody thought anything mattered more than our sibling relationships.

Yeah, when my mom died, I got her house along with her $600 monthly mortgage. When my brother's ex wife found out, she threw a fit and contested my inheritance because I'm a single man with no kids and I don't need a 3 bedroom house. She wanted the house for herself and her 3 kids. The 3rd kid was born black while she and my brother are both white as snow and that's how she got the title of "ex wife". I didn't want to get involved in her stupidity. I told her to stay away from me and my property in front of my new neighbors, 3 cops renting 1 house that regularly has at least 1 police vehicle in the driveway.

I barely knew him, and while I was sad at his passing, I didn't really cry. But I didn't care about the money either. I was raised not caring about the monetary value, to me, money is evil. It can bring out the worst in others and I witnessed it first hand as my grandmother and great aunt inherited most of their father's money. My great aunt was careful with hers, but my grandmother spent a big portion of it on not only herself, but her favorite child, my aunt, who's spoiled, and has a spoiled brat of a kid too. Sadly my brother passed away two months later in a car accident. (Killed by a drunk driver) My entitled Uncle then realized I would be sole beneficiary when my mother died. Three weeks after my brothers funeral that a-hole had the audacity to email me a list of items he wanted, including our vacation home, as well as a “needed” sum of money so he could retire. My father and he had a falling out years ago and we rarely saw him. I was livid. I forwarded the email to my mother and we had a good laugh. Yeah, he won’t get a dime.

Hey Fluff; in Story #3, it reminds me of what happened when my mother (68F) died of Alzheimer's Disease in 2010. To set the stage, there's me socially awkward male (55M) and entitled sister (57F). Immediately after my mother died, we got a lawyer. He was great; he also warned us that eventually as the probate moved along; people's real intentions will manifest themselves. Almost immediately, my sister started acting like everything was going to her in the estate.
However, when my sister married in 1992, she was disinherited by my mother as she didn't agree with the marriage. To the way my mother thought about my sister's marriage; she tried to be happy for her, but inside she felt that the whole marriage was rushed.
Immediately after getting married; my sister and brother-in-law moved to Austin, Texas, to start their new life. We visited, but something always felt a bit off?
Eventually, my sister bore three children; a daughter Katherine, and two sons, son #1 Timothy, and son #2 Gregory.
Upon my mother's untimely death; I had lived and cared for my mother without so much as a thought, until I alerted my sister about needing so help. I also live in a Community Property State. With community property, the deceased can dictate who legally inherits. In my case, it was me that inherited everything. So began the worst entitle behavior that I've ever experienced.
My sister started demanding that I pay every bill; even her own bills. Naturally, I fought that, because I was legally mandated to pay the money for the estate, not my sister's frivolous spending sprees.
The day my mother died, I immediately inherited my mother's vehicle, condominium, and whatever money was remaining in her annuities?
Almost immediately, things started disappearing, small things in the beginning, but eventually money from the estate checking account. Turns out my sister bought a new Jeep Cherokee; she was unemployed and had no money, it was later discovered that she was re-baptized into another Christian denomination so that this new church would pay her $450 monthly assistance checks.
Most of the $450, paid for automobile insurance, license and registration fees, and title for the new vehicle.
Also, when I refused to pay a bill that wasn't itemized by the estate. She made an accusation so hurtful; that I honestly considered killing myself.
The accusation was that my sister accused me of being a registered pedophile and that I had attempted to molest my niece and nephews.
I immediately went to our attorney and unloaded everything; he admitted that this accusation was par for the course in inheritance cases. He also admitted that in order for her to leave, he would have to pay her off, so that she'd leave of her own volition.
After months of walking on eggshells the estate closed; I was supposed to have inherited $62,900, but what I actually inherited was a mere $25,000. My sister took everything including all the furniture, which I gave to her.
My sister now lives in the Midwest, while I reside on the West Coast.
I'm much better emotionally, but I'll never trust my sister ever, unless she gets eaten by tigers!

Story #6 - sounds to me like OP's mother and step-father are using the "you should share with your step-siblings" as an excuse to get money from OP without asking directly

If you have two relatives and one dollar, you need a will.

Story 2: after our father died suddenly, my brother accused me of something similar. I had gotten married the year before, and my father contributed around £5000 towards everything. My brother looked me square in the face and told me that there would have been more inheritance if I hadn't spent it all on my wedding. I don't understand some people's thinking...😶

All of these stories, even the ones I've heard on and off over the time gone by, have me shaking my head.

My kids would joke about inheriting my single younger brother estate. He came to my oldest’s high school graduation with a woman he was seriously dating (in his 40’s). My kids loved her so much immediately so they didn’t care about “losing an inheritance “ 🤣🤣🤣🤣 And they got two cousins out of the deal ♥️♥️

My father surprised me with a living inheritance. It wasn't the whole amount, but he did it (and for my three siblings) so that we could thank him to his FACE. No problem, Dad! (BTW he is still alive at 96. Wouldn't have it any other way).

I will never understand how people could ever want someone to die, just to get some money. I would trade in my whole inheritance and everything I have with it to get my parents back.

in some states, when a couple has been together for a certain length of time but not married, the state considers them married for legal purposes.
