I have seen the results without having to go through it myself. Roommates are a bad idea. They don't want to pay rent or help with bills, they eat food that's yours, they don't respect your house, they don't respect you. Take your pick. At least one will fit.

Actually it should be pointed out that the person who said that driving without insurance is illegal is not right about the kind of insurance that would cover the Karen's car. In most or all states here in the states you are required by law to have insurance to cover other people's cars if you are at fault and either bodily injury or PIP insurance so that any people who get hurt are covered. Bottom line here I doubt that there is any state here that would require you to carry insurance to cover your own vehicle.
The above said, anyone who owns an expensive car and doesn't have "full coverage" (that's what covers your own car) is a fool. In my life I've only owned cars that were not worth paying the premiums for full coverage insurance so I always only paid for what was required by law.

There was another person near me. He stopped and asked us for money. We told him we didn't have any and he started berating us as he walked away. His clothes and backpack looked newer than mine. I was at a loss for words. However, as he came back our direction, fueled by anger, I spoke up with, "I really don't have any money on me but if I did why would I want to give it to you after what you just said?" By the way he looked, he realized he'd shot himself in the foot, so he walked away without a word.

Young people have a misconception on what “friends” are. People that you are acquainted with, that you meet frequently for social activities and do small favors for may be “friends” but it’s with a small f. Real friends are there for you when things get hard, stay after the party to clean up, help you move, defend you when you aren’t there to defend yourself, call on you to see how you are and not just when they need something. Friends listen, consider your viewpoint and do not try to coerce you into doing things you do not want to do. These creatures in the first story may be friendly with OP but they are not really friends.

On the crazy event that they wanted to live in their own accommodation, we will pay for the cost of the bedroom, they would need to find a roommate to cover any other costs!

That said, if someone *was* trying to get money for a hotel room, they likely aren't going to find many, if anyone, to spring for the whole thing. They'd have to ask for a little here and a little there. Many people are willing to hand over five bucks, but not more than that.
Now, I'll say this here, in relation to the topic on this thread, not just your post. Full disclosure, first: I've been doing volunteer work to serve the homeless and other indigent folks for many decades. I became homeless myself when the friend I was living with had a heart attack & the family sold the house. I'm a disbled senior citizen, and SSI won't cover a month's rent anywhere around here, so out on the street I went. Finally got housing assistance last year after a bit over 3 years of homelessness. (The waiting list for the various housing programs run 3-5 years.) So there's my bona fides. I survived, made some good friends that proved they'll always have my back, met the love of my life, and got a helluva education. I'm fine.
I understand people not wanting to give people cash, I do. But it rankles me when someone says, "I offered them food and they wouldn't take it, so they obviously wanted drugs or booze!" Now, if they were specifically saying they wanted food, then turned it down, yeah, they were probably lying then.
Actually, in many communities, food is the least of one's problems, *everyone* offers food. Where I live, there is always at least one church hosting a free meal at lunch or dinner. Some go around to hand out sandwiches and stuff. Other places it may be different, but here there's plenty of food if you know where to go.
The challenge is often getting to those places. A sandwich isn't going to get you a bus ride or minutes for your phone. (The free gov't phones have very limited minutes; use those up, you have to buy more.)
So when people say, "I only give food", I challenge them to go a full week using no money. Just one week. You can have all the food you want, but you can't do anything that costs money. No transpo. No phone calls. Noplace to sleep, of course. No showers. You'll have to find public restrooms (good luck with that!), because most businesses require you to be a paying customer in order to use their facilities. See how that works out for ya. A lot of people just don't seem to get it.
Extreme circumstances bring out either the best or the worst in people. I've met some true saints. I've also met scammers, junkies, crazies, and predators. People are right to be cautious--we should always be cautious with any stranger, homeless or not; but don't make assumptions that if someone is homeless that means they're an addict, criminal, or lazy.
Over 40% of the homeless population is disabled. Yes, that includes those with mental disability, but a good many are physically disabled, and more and more are older. In one women's shelter I was in, out of 12-15 guests, *five* of us were over 60 and physically disabled. Two with advanced cancer. That's about the proportion I've seen in the shelters. But despite the numbers, the homeless programs don't offer much for them--they are geared towards the "poor life choices" and seriously mentally ill. When I first arrived at the shelter, the intake worker told me that since I wasn't addicted to alcohol or drugs, never been in trouble with the law, and had no children, there was no program to help me, I was on my own. Sweet, huh? I asked if it'd help me if I smoked a doob in front of a cop, she thought I was joking.
Being on the street marks you, for better or for worse. Losing everything, being in near-constant danger, having no security, no privacy, and dealing with the stigma and assumptions...Well, some people had addictions and/or mental illness before becoming homeless, but a great many developed (or worsened) those conditions from dealing with the unimaginable stresses of homelessness.

“Driving without insurance.” Whenever I hear someone say they don’t have insurance wrt their car damage, I always assume they mean they just don’t have collision coverage (legal; you don’t have to insure your own property against damage) but they do have liability/injury coverage (you do have a responsibility to insure for the damage you might cause to others). Until it’s said specifically, I’ll give them the benefit of the doubt.
And, as the driver who hit me a year ago found out, adding insurance to the vehicle a half-hour *after* the accident is not going to fly…

Even without cutting it open to save her, the insurance company would've totalled her car anyways due to the structural integrity of it was compromised beyond repair. No repair shop would take it without risking getting sued later if the car got involved in another wreck because of prior damage. The wreck made her car garbage, not the fire department.

I live in Phoenix, AZ and during the summer I go to Costco and get a few flats of water. I put cold packs between rows of water and hand them out to the homeless people so they can stay hydrated.

As for insurance, there's several types.
Liability - Will pay for damages done to others. This level of insurance is required.
Full - Will handle liability and damages to own vehicle. Costs extra.
Now, since she did have a loan on the vehicle, if that loan was through a bank, the bank would require insurance to insure that the loan is paid off in case of an accident.

There was this guy who would panhandle across the street from my work. I don’t know if he was really homeless or not but once a month or so, I would buy him a meal. He was always so grateful and I never saw him throw it away. He would always stop and eat for 20 minutes everything I handed him. It made me think he truly was in need. So I didn’t stop. He never directly asked me for anything. Just held his sigh and he was never rude or wasteful when I gave him food instead of money. Just kind of made me think he truly was one of the homeless that was just down on his luck.

that last story, guy may still have not been going for drugs, but I've never had an actual homeless person be anything but grateful for anything they are given.
I have been harassed by conmen pretending to be homeless or "needing gas money".
Around here, homeless people have actually started listing exsactly what they are needing.
Still remember not tgat long ago, when it was getting cold, I saw this guy who had on his sign that he needed a new tarp.
We actually had a brand new one in the car we had picked up for camping but because of current pandemic we haven't gotten to go camping recently.
So I gave him that and a twenty I had been saving for a rainy day.
The old man was in tears.
The other week, we had a huge pot of soup that well, we were trying out a recipe and didn't find it to our tastes.
It was palletable, but yeah it was only going to go to waste, so I packed it up in little Tupperware we use for mailing cookies to family, then got bottled water and some rolls along with a bit of disposable cutlery. We drove to a couple areas we know homeless hang out and they were just happy for a hot meal.
Hell, I know a couple guys who have jobs, but because of the ever increasing cost of housing can't find places to live.
So yeah, most homeless people are just people trying to get by.

Years ago after work I was walking home, only a block or two away, and a seemingly homeless man stopped me asking for a dollar "For a slice of pizza."
He pointed, and I looked across the street, and there was indeed a pizzeria, right next door to a liquor store.
I had just cashed my paycheck, and I had time on my hands, so I offered, "Tell you what. We'll go over there together, and I'll buy you _two_ slices of pizza, and a large soft drink of your choice."
The guy quickly back-pedaled on his beg, and insisted all I needed to do is give him the one dollar, which I politely decline to do.

I used to be a volunteer medic with my community ambulance service. As such, I received training in extrication and it is pretty standard to pop the doors open with the jaws, cut through the roof support posts with the snip and peel back the roof to expose the seats to the sky. If the occupants are not pinned, there is no reason to remove the roof.
I am generally a wise guy. When several agencies take training, it can take place in a parking lot where some junked cars have been towed to. I have always wanted to run into the midst of the training waving my arms yelling "MY CAR, MY CAR!!!"
