One of my aunts worked at Walmart. Whenever a new game system or hot toy came out, people would to come to the store to buy as much as they can. They would sell them online for a greater price. The store later had one per customer restriction and people would bring kids to the store, each wanting their own. One woman brought a baby in a stroller and she claimed that the baby wanted an Xbox too.
Whenever a new hot wheel came out, there were people who would buy all the new models and sell them online. My aunt knew hot wheel collectors wanted the cars in pristine packaging., so she would bend some of the cardboard packing. This way the kids had a chance of buying the new car, because kids didn’t keep them in the packaging.

I worked in a big red box mart and someone had purchased a few popular toys. Comic book story reminds me of my mom. We (brothers and I) had several comic books, including some Disney books. My mom decided that since we boys were older and didn’t read them anymore, that they were trash. My oldest brother explained, or tried to, that they were collectables and were/are actually valuable. Mom, of course, didn’t believe that and tossed them out. Fast forward a few months and one of her friends inquired if we still had all those vintage comics as her husband was interested in buying them. My mom asked why her husband would want to buy “worthless comics”. Should have seen her face when her friend explained how much those comics were worth.

Yeah, I bet that the mother probably had the what are they done thought running through her skull, but the problem is with other entitled parents that would be like that, sometimes they think that all Comics no matter how valuable they are, no matter how old they are, they’re all worthless because of the simple fact they don’t like them and that is the Karen mentality when it comes to stuff that kids like is that, Kids like it I don’t like it I need to be rid of it because of reasons I have in my head. I know it really doesn’t make sense but sometimes when it comes to stuff like that when they have a reason to hate some thing that doesn’t fit their criteria, they go hard-core hate on it. In my last yr in HS, they were nice enough to forgo 'the house money' which I gave them from my full-time job's paycheck, that way I wouldn't have to work while taking 5 college classes/term. At the end of 10 months, I had not only put away 'the house money', but I also matched it penny for penny, & that was $3000. The rest of my college costs were paid by my personal loans, scholarships, & grants. That was in 1976. If I went to the same out-of-state school today, it would cost $61,050/year. A friend of mine once told me a story about when he was in school. He had a teacher who hated comic books believing them to be a bad thing as it discouraged students from reading "real" books. She knew that my friend spent a lot of time in the library and one day when she was teaching about the various parts of the earth's atmosphere she asked if anyone could name the parts and my friend's hand went up. He then recited the various parts. The teacher then asked him (knowing he spent a lot of time in the library) where he had learned the parts of the atmosphere thinking he was likely to say he saw it in a book in the library. To her shock, he said I saw it in a superman comic book where it showed superman flying through the various parts. I recall seeing at least one superman comic which did that so I never questioned the story. What some people fail to see is that comic books can encourage people to read and that can end up with them actually looking for books on subjects which catch they attention. I know that there have been times when reading a book by one author has made me decide to read others by a different author.

Story 1: Both kids got the same amount and are lucky that they got that, it is not OP's fault that his daughter decided to go to a university that was more expensive, so any debt past the 10k is on her, just like if her brother didn't get the scholarship that he got then any extra debts would be on him. And why didn't the kids get jobs and save money themselves to go to college/university? or wait a few years so they can work, make money, and then be able to go with a lot less debt? Also, I find that people care more when they are the ones on the hook for all that money then the people who get fully funded and will have little to no debt after graduating.
Story 2: Good on OP for having Karen charged. Never feel bad for a Karen no matter what as they NEED to learn a hard lesson many times before their 1/2 brain cell can process the possibility that they may have possibly been potentially not right about a detail or two, and then after about 30 times of this they might learn to stop kicking the bear in the balls.

They told my sister they would do the same 10,000/year for her as well. She went to the same college as me, but didn’t get as good of scholarships, and was angry with my parents that they wouldn’t give her more since I didn’t owe anything, but she would have to take out loans. Our mom told her that she could just pay all of it if she didn’t like what was offered, but that giving us the same amount was the only fair option, and that she should apply for other kinds of scholarships if she wanted to reduce her total. More like, I suffered and she should be grateful that she doesn’t have to suffer to the extent that I did, even though she made bad decisions. we all have to deal with the consequences of our actions, good or bad, and it is not the parents job to bail their kid out of a situation that she entered in when she understood all of the consequences and was warned about the cost. She’s an adult. She made her choice. He already helped out to an extent that most people don’t get and yet she wants more? If my dad came into money, even with me currently going to college, I would tell him get out and enjoy himself because he’s worked so hard for me his whole life. Othe fact that she doesn’t feel that way says a lot about her, I think

Student Debt Story: Both Daughter and Wife are being EXTREMELY Entitled. OP has already helped both Son and Daughter with $10,000.00 for their Education AND he made several suggestions for how Daughter can get an Education without saddling herself with a small mountain of Debt. She could easily have done what her Brother did and apply for a Scholarship/Grant to help pay for College as well as go to Community College which would not cost nearly as much as Prestigious Dartmouth College does...
SHE chose to go to the more expensive School and she (apparently, it's not mentioned in the story) chose to not apply for Scholarships/Grants that would have helped pay the Tuition Costs therefore, SHE is solely responsible for her Student Debt load once she Graduates. OP will give her that $10K towards paying the Debt off, but the rest is up to her.
Now as Darkfluff did mention, a Degree from Dartmouth should help her land a Good or even Great paying Job and that along with some careful Financial Planning/Budgeting on her part should take care of a $29,000.00 Student Debt in 2-3 years while still letting her get a decent car and a modest Rental Unit while saving up for a better car and/or home etc.
The fact that Daughter went behind OP's back to the wife and the wife didn't smack her down for it show both are EXTREMELY Entitled and if I were OP, I'd start taking a VERY close look at both my Marriage AND Wife's behaviour/Personality and ask myself: "Do I REALLY want to continue living with 2 women that have this little Respect for me?"
The only slight problem OP might run into with how he plans on using the Winnings is he was Married when he won the money, thus it might Legally be Marital Money and Wife could be Legally entitled to half. In which case, OP might not be able to go on quite as long a Vacation as he'd like to, though the money he put into Wife's car would come out of HER half of the Winnings, what's left of her half is then hers to do with as she wants, including, help Daughter pay down her Student Debt, though I can see Son getting Pissed if his Sister gets more money than he does for School...

I gotta agree. _Maybe_ a bit "selfish" about it being his money, but he did win it from a birthday gift to himself. I'd guess that _he_ earned that $50 he spent on the lottery tickets, too. _Maybe_ his daughter should consider using that "prestigious Dartmouth degree" to get a job that'll help pay off the $29,000 debt that she incurred by choosing Dartmouth.
I have no idea how Dartmouth handles scholarships.

Damn, I am so happy that kid had a very supportive father. Thank God! My mom would do the same to me. She's taken my figures and books and donated them because "those are for boys" she also burned some of my things or threw them away. My dad sometimes supported me, but he most of the time stayed out of it. My mom is very manipulative and good at gaslighting. I ended up moving out, but that was many years later.
To have a dad who didn't get easily manipulated or a mom who isn't manipulative enough is very fortunate for that kid. The father even took the child away from her so he was well supported.

In the first story the daughter and the wife are totally out of line. It's his money; he won it, and if we go by the fact that his wife spend her entire $5,000 inheritance on plastic surgery (probably more, very few procedures cost that little these days) renders her unentitled to an opinion. The daughter sounds like a real brat. No parent owes an education to his child. My own parents gave me what they could, but mostly I was responsible for it and paid off the loans myself.

If we're honest, $29K for a Darthmouth degree isn't bad - it's about the cost of a car these days! I might feel differently if dad had won a much bigger prize like $250K.

Story one, OP is making too much sense and it's the daughter and wife in the wrong. He should be more of a hard ass. The third story on the other hand... it was the 90's Fluff!!! Females didn't really enter comic book shops back then, as it was a bigger societal taboo in the early part of the decade. Most women didn't want to be seen as "nerds". The proto-Karen's behavior was more like a stereotypical 80's high school girl, nothing nerdy allowed. The father was more in the right for telling her no. Personally, OP should've told them that if she damages anything that he would call the police. Heck, even her son wanted OP to call the police on her earlier. She literally begged for a strained relationship with her son.

  • @LillikoiSeed

Regarding Comic Book Karen. My family would never ever do anything like that to me. If that were my shop, I would offer an option. Given that it is owner operated, and clearly belongs to someone with a high degree of integrity, if my feet were in those shoes, I would offer to take the collection, draw up a contract, And give that 12 year old child who spent obviously a long time caring for something very important to him, safe space to keep them until he turned 18, at which point, there would be nothing his mother could do. Lock stock and barrel. And of course if he wanted to add to his collection, the inventory sheet that would easily be written up considering he knows everything about his collection, would be fully documented and catalogued.

My dad had more than a million bucks saved, He earned it and I had no right to demand a penny of it. However, when I needed help, he was right there. I earned my associate's degree from community college and paid for it myself. Daddy loved learning new skills, and I was thrilled that we were classmates in 1982 when he decided to take a computer class and we just happened to end up in the same class. He wasn't only my Dad, he was one of my closest most trusted friends. We had some tongues wagging at first, when I'm a 21 year old girl hugging and kissing this 50-something year old classmate. He's my dad! Get your filthy minds out of the gutter! 😂
I didn't want to go to a university for several reasons. I wanted to be a graphic artist, and that didn't require a 4 year degree at my level. In the 80s, it wasn't all computerized yet, so it required a lot more technical skill and a steady hand, and I was already good at it. I made enough to buy a cute little 2 bedroom house for my son and me.
When my dad died in 1996, I inherited $300,000. In 2010, I became permanently disabled after a botched brain surgery. My mom and dad both lived through the Depression, and taught me how to budget and live well, cheaply. It's not just that money he left me more than 25 years ago, but the wisdom he taught me about not blowing it that has made it possible for me to own a home even though I can't work and keep that home and still eat.

I can relate to the guy with the comic books. My father did everything to go against every hobby I tried to pickup because it did not meet his standards. His standards was physical sports. Mine was in the area of electronics, didn't matter what type. My father refused to his kids to play video games, so my next best thing was remote control cars. They were more pricy though and also costly to maintain. Eventually my father hated that too and decided to put that in the his black list and forced me to drop that hobby. I still liked gadgets and I was limited because of the amount of money I had and Dad refused me those things. When I entered high school I took a electrical class that later about half term the school decided to get rid of the class, then I went into machinery. That year my Mom decided enough is enough with my father refusing to let any of us do anything we truly wanted finally got a N64 for Christmas. When I first saw the device my siblings and I were so excited to receive it. I looked over at my parents after getting it I saw my father sitting right next to my Mom all furious but said nothing. When I turned 22 I got my first phone and when the bill came in next month my Dad lost it and tried to have me return it when I told him it was too late now. I needed the phone for a job. I even saved up money for my first PC so I can use it for college to try to get my computer science degree, again Dad tried to interfere. Throughout all this time my father has punished me for things that were not needed when i got old enough he tried to use the 'I will kick you out of the house tactic' several times on me to get what he wanted... Until I knew I had enough money to move out and did everything to keep me in the house. Today I still live with my parents and I am 36 now, yes I can move out but I am there to drive him up the wall now for my entertainment. He did all this because he claims that me and my siblings were video game addicts and needed to be kept away from them. Truthfully I'm no video game addict, I just love electronics and try to make them work better. I am now a computer repair tech.

It was also a healthy and profitable hobby since it kept me out of trouble but also I would mow neighbors lawns and be a kid/teen helper around neighborhood to earn money ontop of my allowance for my bi-weekly trip to the comic shop or flea market. As a teen when needed extra money I would gather some of my less valuable comics and sell them to my favorite shop for spending money. My sister decided to use it for a big fancy wedding and that amount only paid for half of it so she had to figure out how to finance the rest. I decided to buy a house and that same amount was the entirety of my down payment and closing costs. She ended up divorced after a year and had to declare bankruptcy, meanwhile I've had my house for 14 years now and the mortgage is almost paid off.
