I think that some folks should do a rewatch and and may not find this era so objectionable. Remember there was so much smoke on social media when these episodes were broadcast and it was hard to escape the voices of discontent. Jodie being the first female Doctor, the diversity of the cast and their acting experience. After a few years drowning that out I think you’ll find the show and Jodie being as good as any other era. Even watching this reaction I have to admit that Jodie is in every way The Doctor. I would’ve loved her to have been under Moffat because I think he would’ve really brought out the magic of the character.

I'm very happy you liked this opener. So do I. Somehow, the 13th Doctor remember me a bit of the 7th, McCoy. Behind the joyful appearance, there's a mystical depth and their brain keeps working 24/7. Thanks for a great channel 🌞

The Thirteenth Doctor got off to a brilliant start with this one. You're totally right about how well Chris Chibnall wrote the human characters in this - we hit the ground running with very realistic grounded people.

I loved Jodie's Doctor. I really enjoyed her era. The pandemic wreaked havoc, but I thought they did well within the restrictions. It can't have been easy to run the show under those circumstances. I think we all were upset that they killed off Grace. She was a great character.

Plus, whilst my favorite Doctor is whichever Doctor I am currently viewing, it warms my heart that you consider Peter Capaldi your favorite Doctor. Technically a version of the intro music (since you seen the end credits for the episode, not a spoiler to say its the intro theme) plays when the Whittaker Doctor crashes into the train but yeah the pacing of the episode is so good, most don't realise the titles weren't there until the credits roll.

I'm glad your having a good time with this. 😊
This was the highest rated out of the whole previous post-regeneration stories so far.
This is the first time since 1982 from the Fifth Doctor (Peter Davison) era where the Doctor has 3 main companions it was kind of expected Grace wouldn't have joining but we didn't expect her to be killed off either we thought she end up becoming a recurring character like Jackie and Mickey or Syliva and Wilfred but i think having 4 companions would have been too crowded.
While the show is set in Sheffield Jodie Whittaker herself is from Yorkshire.
This is also the second time in NuWho that the TARDIS does not feature in this episode since the last episode "Midnight".

I really loved this episode when it first aired, as well as the second episode. I am surprised how much you liked it, I didn't think you would be as enthusiastic about it as you were, but that's cool. I wasn't the biggest fan of Jodie's run on first airing, and chibbs is a very different type of showrunner to Moffat and RTD, he rarely gave interviews or shared his thought process, and he kept literally everything so tightly under wraps in regards to spoilers that it just ended up frustrating people. But since leaving the show, he has shared a lot more about how he went about things and also the struggles his era had because of covid and other things, and it made me appreciate it a lot more, and realise that he and the crew really did care for the show. Very interested to see how you react to the rest of Jodies era.

The thing that annoyed me about this on first watch was Grace's death. You're right; she's a great character and it's a shame to lose her. However, the death does provide a good catalyst for character development concerning both Graham and Ryan, so I can understand Chibnell's writing choice here.

I 100% agree that DW needs to keep changing it up. The issue I had with 13s era, similar to the 5th doctor is that the Tardis is super crowded. 13 plays hosts to her companions, mainly 100% reactionary until the Witches Familiar when we finally got a glimpse of her character stand-alone-without a reaction to an event.
Her first seasons is rough, a couple good episodes. Series 12 has some of my fave tho

I recommend this order for story arch and judge her era as a whole rather than series by series.
    ( Best binging)

    2. "The Ghost Monument"
    3. "Resolution of the Daleks"
    4. "Spyfall, Part 1"
    5. "Spyfall, Part 2"
    6. "Fugitive of the Judoon"
    7. "The Haunting of Villa Diodati"
    8. "Ascension of the Cybermen"
    9. "The Timeless Children"
    10. "Revolution of the Daleks"
    11. "The Halloween Apocalypse"
    12. "War of the Sontarans"
    13. "Once Upon a Time"
    14. "Village of the Angels"
    15. "Survivors of the Flux"
    16. "The Vanquishers"
    17. "Eve of the Daleks"
    18. "Power of the Doctor"
The rest are filler episodes - (my best to least fav)
    1. "Rosa"
    2. "Can You Hear Me?"
    3. "It Takes You Away"
    4. "Demons of the Punjab"
    5. "Nikola Tesla's Night of Terror"
    6. "The Witchfinders"

I’ve watched Jodie’s era a few times and can say, personally there’s only 1 poor episode this season and one I find difficult to watch towards the end. Otherwise she’s awesome with great stories.

Not everyone agrees with this but I think Chibnall had a series of excellent ideas just let down, for some reason, pretty consistently by average as hell execution. The plots for S12-13 were given too frantic pacing later on and the character stuff let down by a real lack of being actually dealt with or followed through with any sense of interiority which made that stuff feel constantly impersonal, while S11 was too lacking in some of the basics of the show (And also still suffered for a lack of character development). I think theres a lot to enjoy though. Jodie being one of them. I feel due to the writing her doctor was not really given as much of a stamp of individuality or even depth as most other doctors but she, to me, undeniably nails the basics of what the doctor should be. I also thought the production values were consistently strong and I find the composer underappreciated,

I gotta admit I wasn’t a fan of this era on the first watch through. But I feel like I need to watch it again just to give it another chance.
But I do have a friend who’s way more into Doctor Who than me who described Chris Chibnall as “The worst thing to come out of Britain since the British Empire.”
Which I think is a tad harsh.

I've always said this, while it is my (current) least favorite era of New Who, I do think 13's era gets TOO much hate. I'm not particularly fond of Series 11, it has great stuff but nothing amazing. Series 12 though is where things pick up for me, it's not in my top 5 seasons or anything, but i'm absolutely a Series 12 apologist. And Series 13... Well it's hard to describe my thoughts without spoiling so it's best you experience that whenever you get there.
So yeah welcome to a very bizarre ride in Doctor Who called the Chibnall era.

I don't think Chibnall is good with character work/development per say, I still think Russell takes the cake on that for me.. but he has a specific type of "everyday person" writing that really suits the non sci-fi elements of the show.

  • @CrankyGrandma
    @CrankyGrandma 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

I was very opposed to a female doctor. Not a female master because I could see the master as female. But the doctor has always been very bloke-ish. I pictured all sorts of female stereotypes, jokes about undergarments or monthly crankiness, as though “female” would be so “groundbreaking”that it would be annoying. Look she’s female! She wears mascara! (None of those things makes someone female… I can say as a kid who was a tomboy from the start). God bless Chris Chibnall and Jodie. From the start Jodie was simply the doctor. Not “the female doctor”. Just the doctor. As much as any of the others. I do have some issues with this era but they are not due to Jodie and this era had some great episodes (this is one). There is one coming up that most fans don’t like but I love. More later.

This episode is definitely a good episode. Unfortunately this is significantly better than most episodes in the era imo. The characters get really lame over time and I think getting rid of the Grace was a detrimental decision. Jodie Whittaker is a fantastic actor and this episode shows that, but she gets plagued by some terrible character writing later on. Hopefully you do enjoy this era, it’s just not for me

You watched the END of the Who with Capaldi. You will see. They will start to go against 55 years of settled DW lore and start to change it because of politics. This story is fine. I still never like the late gender swapping and just chose to see Missy as someone different.
Jodie Whittaker was a bad pick to change my opinion. She was clearly out of her depth and her comments really alienated a lot of fans basicially accept gender swapping and female taking the leads or f you was how she cane across.
Tosin Cole is also incredibly wooden and an awful actor.
Chris Chibnall is a very agenda shoving and overdoses it alot to the point i switched off after this season.
