That's really good point, and well documented! Even more as the Tony Betrus, the speaker, is a real athlete also when it comes to "traditional" sports.

This idea took me a while to warm up to. Not because I disagree with the talk, but because I wonder where competitive .SWF programming was 18 years ago. Or competitive firewood splitting and stacking when I was in high school. Thinking this way, when "I was in my prime" I could've been considered one heck of an athlete... yet I've never considered myself an athlete at all, so the idea that gaming can be a sport was pretty far-fetched. I did come around, though.
Recently one of my schools connected to a professor from SUNY Canton to hear about video game design. Seems that there is a lot of momentum in the North Country when it comes to gaming. Is there a regional initiative or just coincidence?

In my opinion, everyone defines "sport" in a different way. Some people consider sports as a competition in general (both mental and physical) and others define it as physical activity and possibly also as a competition based on their definition. In my point of view sports should be separated into mental- and physical/traditional sports. But tbh i think, if somebody tells you he does sports you probably wouldn´t think about gaming or similar activities. But no matter if it´s a sport or not, Esports should be respected, of course, because to become a Pro-Gamer it also requires a lot of discipline, motivation and ambition. Although I don´t really recognize Esports as a real sport, I respect it.

I suspect most people who don't recognize esports as sports, don't know enough about either; they likely haven't played a sport to a level where they see the game beyond surface level skills and they likely haven't played an esport to that level either. I have done both, get me in an MRI thingy while I play both and you will see that the brain and physical exertion is right on par. It's so plainly obvious to every high level athlete I've ever talked to or seen play an esport or even just watch one.
Linguistically I will say that language is flexible and cultural so relax a lil, yes no one really associates being an athlete or playing a sport with esports ***yet***, but that can and should and likely will change and to some degree it already is.
Love the points he made about accessibility and community, so so massively important, esports need to be recognized as sports so that they can get the same amount of support as young athletes and competitors in other games.

From 9:37 to At 10:39 I cover definitions. My definition of Esports= “Playing video games competitively as an individual or a team using agreed upon rules and regulations.” The key things to take away are “rules” and “competitively.” To put it another way: tossing a baseball in the backyard is not a sport, just like sitting on your couch playing video games is not a sport. Add rules, another team, and increase the stakes for winning and losing, and you’ve got a sport. And thanks, I do my best to be a “nice guy” :) In general, my experience with the entire Esports community is that there are a whole lot of good people doing good things. The more we engage with and empower the players, the better it will get!

e sports may be something competitive. but i dont think its a sport. atleast not conventional sport. sports are defined as "an activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others for entertainment" this does not match e sports. there should be a different category for things like this. stuff like chess, e sports, and NASCAR. otherwise good argument, but i really dont think e sports are like other sports

Problem I have with this is he has the definition of a sport and then says I don’t like that definition and changes the definition so “esports” can be classified as a sport.
“You can’t have injuries unless you have physical exertion”… Yes you can. Taking his example of injuries esports causes is back pain. Why do they injure their backs? Because of being sedentary not because physical exertion. It’s actually the opposite of physical exertion why they have back problems…
It’s ok to have esports and a great community and be competitive and have fun strategizing and improving your gameplay, but why is there this push to try and classify it as a sport. I love esports and find it entertaining. Why can’t it just be called esports?

No physical contest = no sports. This is the same for esports, chess, poker, golf, ... . Noone who says esports are not sports would claim that chess is real sports, but it is usually the first argument by someone who claims that esports is a sport. Also i think it is very dangerous to promote Video Gaming like this, the tremendous health risks especially for children and teenagers have been scientifically proven many times. Even if it doesn't make a young person ill, overall it will undeniably increase myopia and obesity. As a society we shouldn't only think about what sports is by definition but also what sports mean to us. Doing sports should always be considered a good and healthy thing which it is as long as esports is not considered real sports.

@@sastashroud7646 You do realize that it makes no sense to categorize esports as a health hazard and chess not? They are basically the same thing just different genres. Pretty much any MOBA game works the same way chess does only it' s a billion times more complicated. Instead of a few chess pieces with different movements patterns you suddenly have over 150 of them with multiple different movement and attack patterns that also interact with each other in different ways. Same way as to become a professional chess player, you got to sit a desk for many hours every day and hone your skill set, you also have to do the same thing with many esports. The only difference might be that chess is played way less competitively and doesn't require as much effort put into as esports, where you have to practise 10-12 hours every day otherwise you' l simply fall behind the competition. There is way more competition than in any other sports so i would indeed categorize it as a sport. You need effort, strategy, teamwork and so much more.
