    A masterpiece of film. So much better than the majority of slop from Hollyweird of today.

    People used to speak so eloquently and proper. Shame we've devolved in how we speak.

    This movie is one of the best sci/fi horror movies of all time! The musical score alone by Dimitri Tiomkin scared the hell out of me as a kid. Wish they could make them like this again.

      This one of my favorite, all time movies. I often find I enjoy old movies like this more than modern ones. This movie should be shown to cinema students as an example of how to tell a story. Sure, it's practically ancient in terms of special effects and such, but it tells a taunt, compelling story in an effective, entertaining way.

      As i understand it movie making is an art form. Of every 5000 pictures made maybe one reaches the level of technical excellence or " art. " Lots of trial and error happens in choosing the right combination of screenplay, director, actors, administrators, and other creative personnel. If you give it a shot . . .YOU might be the next Alfred Hitchcock.

    A superbly crafted movie. Trapped in the snowy arctic, not at Santa's workshop but at a research center menaced by a vampire vegetable. A great scary movie to watch during the Christmas season.

    Although Christian Nyby is credited as director of THE THING FROM ANOTHER WORLD, one of the dead giveaways that Howard Hawks was actually in charge is the overlapping dialogue by the various cast members. The other dead giveaway was that Nyby never directed another classic of the Hollywood production. Hawks just didn’t want anybody to know that he directed a cheap science fiction film. That would have adversely affected his reputation of having directed top of the line features. An absolute classic. Bar none.

    • @mostlynew
      @mostlynew ปีที่แล้ว

      The overlapping dialog is trite and inexpressibly irritating. The reporter’s character is unforgivably obnoxious. What was supposed to pass as flirtation was flat. Otherwise, the movie is memorable for its frightening visitor.

    Great to see clips of this again after 66 years of recollection. I was scared to death at age 15 sitting in the upper level at the Majestic Theater in downtown Dallas. Hmmmmmm. Thanks.

    sounds like everyone likes this one over 1982 carpenters version

    • @johnbertrand7185
      @johnbertrand7185 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Carpenter's version stays close to original story. I think this one gets the nod because of its tight editing and sharp acting. The '82 version is good in its own right but usually loses points for the massive amounts of gore.

    • @dongilleo9743
      @dongilleo9743 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The 82 version is amazing, but it's visually overwhelming. Not everyone feels the same way, but I'm of the opinion that modern filmmakers too often use special effects and CGI, without asking if they should. The story gets lost or buried underneath all the flashy effects.

    Imagine blending the characters and the time period from this movie and combining it with John Carpenter's The Thing? Now that would have been interesting to watch! I bet the 1950s wouldn't have been able to watch it completely! People wouldn't have seen science fiction or aliens the same way again!

    A sequel to “The Thing From Another World” might have been interesting. Seeing how the West and the East, back during the Cold War, would almost be forced to cooperate in a joint effort to be ready to fight an expected full-scale invasion by the large “vegetable men” from outer space.

    Why does the Saucer have a vertical stabiliser?

      the same reason cars have spoilers and fins.....they look cool

    • @dongilleo9743
      @dongilleo9743 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Probably a plot device to save money. This was way before CGI. A stabilizer sticking up out of the ice gives evidence of an alien space ship, without the cost of building the entire ship. There was no way a studio could build a space saucer without it looking cheesy. The audience is left to imagine, which is much more effective.
      It's similar to a lot of other things in the movie, which has all the makings of a sci-fi horror story. There's much that's not shown, but merely alluded to or talked about. Instead of constantly showing the monster, the quickening clicking of the Geiger counter eeriely lets the characters and audience know it is getting closer. The audience free to imagine the worse. Then when action is shown, like the fire scene, it hits much more forcefully.
