Every scifi epic since has owed a great debt to Forbidden Planet. Star Wars, Star Trek, Alien . . . all the biggies. They even introduced the concept of Hyperspace in this film! I never tire of this one or the original War of the Worlds!
Conceptually and aesthetically way more ambitious than nearly all contemporary science fiction movies. What '2001' was for the 1960s, this one was for the 1950s as a vision.
You know the Soviets watched these movies and felt left behind despite putting Sputnik in orbit. Forbidden Planet, 2001 A Space Odyssey, Star Wars. The Russians have limited imagination....look at things now.
When I was nine years old, I saw Forbidden Planet in a local theater as a 1st run movie. My opinion is that this is one of the best SyFi movie of the era, and is still impressive today, especially the first use of electronic music in a movie. This is a must see!

I was 9yrs old when it came out. So ahead of its time in so many ways. The synthesizer sound track (a first!) was the audio effects and the audio effects were the sound track. Most '50s sci-fi movies had guys in rubber suits. The "monster" in the neutron beams was nothing I had seen before and scared the absolute living crap out of me.
So interesting. This is what happened in the USA, in my country in the same time had an invasion and a terror state was started where even childrens were executed. Wonder how advanced the culture of mankind could be with a little bit less control and more freedom.
For younger people who never got the chance to see movies in CinemaScope and stereophonic sound you guys really can't get the full impact of this scene and movie... I remember seeing this when it first came out

Later in life, I bought the Cinefantastique issue with the small Robby poster. Later, I got the soundtrack LP and then the CD. This movie never gets old. Oh, I"m also writing a thinly-disguised sequel which features the character played by Earl Holliman, the only cast member who's still alive in 2022.
Considering it's one of the earlier sci fi movies I think that it feels more realistic, like little touches. Them securing their landing site and the turning off of the artificial gravity since they're on a world with it, no need to waste power right? Even the little bounce at the end, it's like the bounce a landing plane does when touching down a little too hard. I love it!
They just copy real life science to their science-fiction, nothing extraordinary, you got used to sci-fi-fantasy that is all. Star Wars changed sci-fi forever.
This scene was playing on the TV in the 1978 movie Halloween. The sound effects of the spaceship landing are heard when Tommy looks out the window and sees Michael Myers carrying a dead body. Very creepy scene!
ST basically stole its bridge design from Klaatu's ship in "The Day the Earth Stood Still" -- command chair placed at the center of a round control room, facing two other crew stations, with a screen between the latter, an elevator/door offset behind the chair, and a shallow domed ceiling that provides the light.
Simply one of the best science fiction movies of all time! Made in the same year I was born, this classic proves the ingenuity and craftsmanship of movie artisans of the day, perhaps never to be fully duplicated. The sound effects stimulate the sensation, mood and emotion. The visual effects simply superb!
Your take on this is right on target. I remember replaying these sounds with endless fascination in my head as a child. Louis and Bebe Baron surely formulated some beautiful sounds from what today would be considered ancient technology. It goes to show their wonderful ingenuity in working in such a labor and imagination-intensive technical environment way back in 1954.

Even with its retro take on outer space, this movie holds up with its state of the art visual fx, great performances, and a convincing world and gripping mystery. The occasional 50's hokeyness only adds to the fun, but somehow never detracts from the main story, tone of mystery and suspense.
One thing I always loved about this movie was how realistically the crew secured the perimeter. A small contingent made sure the place was safe before a lower ranking officer told the CO the place was clear. That means nothing now, but in 1956 you NEVER saw that level of discipline in a sci fi movie.
It seems more common sense just little things like "everyone carry a sidearm" until it's clear order. Just normal precautions one would take before going into a planet.
The sounds are so 'unlike' anything you would experience in everyday life, and that's what made it so creepy and the movie so memorable. It was very 'out of this world'.
Their attention to detail marks the absolute professionalism of the filmmakers. As a side note, the Bosun was played by veteran actor George Wallace. For SF fans of that era, he was famous for his earlier role of Commando Cody, the Rocket Man, in the Republic Pictures serial "Radar Men From The Moon"!
Not to mention that James Drury (the Virginian) and Richard Anderson (Six Million Dollar Man) and Earl Holliman (several westerns) were there. The second officer and the doctor were also veteran actors. This was a stellar cast at a time when they were still early in their careers.

Apart from all the accolades mentioned here, the film featured the lovely Anne Francis. What could be more heavenly? It will fit in all the right places.

It added an element of realism. The captain decided to pilot her in himself, thus the occasional wobble in flight and a slight bounce on landing. The Apollo lunar module pilots would have appreciated this.

When this first hit the theaters they used cinemascope wide screens .. Much better than today's mini screens ..the sounds was unreal on this movie .. I remember how creepy just the music was back in '56
One of the best sequences is the great Krell machine and Dr. Morbius' description of the shafts, dimensions, etc. Add to that the incredible Id monster, and my love of sci-fi was set.
There is a little detail I just picked up. at 0:36 and again at 0:56 there is a light shadow in the rocks on the far right along the base of the mountains that tracks the saucer motion. Maybe the shadow cast from a moon and not the sun. Would someone even think of that detail?
There was no "music" in this movie at all. Bebe and Luis Barron, a husband and wife team, experimented with burning circuit boards and recording the sounds they made. Then they would tape record the sounds and create "electronic tonalities". It took them over eight months to make the sound score. I highly recommend the TY video by Bebe Barron on how they created the sounds. They were not members of the musician's union so they were restricted from calling their work "music". If you watch the credits at the end of the movie, you will see "Electronic Tonalities" by Louis and Bebe Barron.
I saw some one's post that "The day the Earth stood still" space ship landing was the best ever made on film. I'm a Sci-Fi nerd. And I love that film. But I'm sorry. Forbidden Planet is the very best space ship landing. And the best movie with the very best sound and effects. :)
First film to feature a 100% electronic music track. Nice theramin, tape echo & ring modulated spacecraft landing there. They also though ahead a bit. While Kirk was always leading the way, gambling his crew unnecessarily, at least this captain waited until his crew gave him an "all's clear". I guess that wasn't studly enough for TV.
MGM knew how to make movies. This is photography with film, lenses and lighting. Cedric Gibbons art direction is in a category by itself. In a theater on a big screen for Cinemascope and four channels of stereophonic sound this is a masterpiece that isn't matched even with digital effects.
I saw this when a kid and it's in my CD collection. In my opinion thevreal enemy in this story was not Dr.. Morbious but the AI that killed the Krall civilization. Another was in 2001 a space oddessie where the ship's computer killed everyone on board except one who was able to turn it off. I don't trust AI, if we're not careful we may end up like the Krall... Extinct.

The best scifi from the 50s the acting was great the dialogue was tight the pace and editing were spot on and it even had little bits of humor. I remember as a kid getting a robot toy !! It was a bit scary as when you wound it up it sort of wobbled along and sparks would fly inside a clear plastic chest plate.
The shadows from the rocks on the right at 0:58 indicate the light source is coming from the right of the saucer. Therefore when the saucer lands the shadow should be to the left, not directly beneath it.

+trha2222 Of course. Tron was made 30 years after this movie so you'd expect it to have more advanced effects. But we're talking the movie itself, not just the effects. And even with that there are effects in this movie that are just as good as Tron.
+trha2222 Not really, the original Tron takes place in a graphic reality so everything looks animated and cartoony, as it should in that world. Forbidden Planet takes place in our reality so the effects have to be more realistic. Today I can't really watch Tron 1982 without thinking how primitive the effects look since CGI has come so far. It all looks like a cartoon. Forbidden Planet looks a lot less dated because so many of the techniques used, miniatures, matte paintings, animation... are still used to varying degrees still today. But besides that, Forbidden Planet is just a far superior story to either Trons. Better acting, better story telling, better characters, better direction. and all around just better executed.
The movie was released the year I was born and this must explain why I have an innate passion for sci-fi, space and spaceships. This is by far the best spaceship design ever next to the Jupiter 2 and The Starship Enterprise.
Another sci-fi flick from the period, "Robinson Crusoe on Mars," also provided some hard science in an alien setting, in particular, the performance of the inertialess drives of the enemy aliens. An obscure gem! =^[.]^=
For a supposedly formulaic sci-fi film, it certainly captured the imagination enough to inspire the iconic "Star Trek" series and subsequent franchise of films, "Star Wars" and other films like it of a similar stripe within the sci-fi genre!
Hard to call this "formulaic" because this one had such a grand concept. The monster isn't a giant spider or a dinosaur or a blob of semi-sentient jelly. The monster is you in your dreams. In terms of the ancient Greek classification of stories, this isn't man against nature or man against man. It is man against self.

I love sci-fi but for me this is on the top of my list first saw it back in the early 60's on TV, can't get enough of it, had it on VHS, two copies on DVD ( you know, just in case), start to finish it is a masterpiece.
This awesome landing scene has been tattooed in my imagination since childhood. ... Often, particularly on rainy, thunderous nights, while cozy-tugged in bed I fantasize travelling to alien worlds with loved ones on this cool spaceship!
This is the part of the movie that Tommy and Lindsey were watching in Halloween when Tommy saw Michael Myers carrying Annie's body into the Wallace house. Those sound effects made the scene even creepier.
These 50s SciFi movies were fabulous on so many levels. You could watch them again and again, for decades. I always dug the outfits. This one was catcher's chest protector and shoulder pads. Bouffant hair on the senior space rangers, ball caps for the subordinates. Meets all the 50s SciFi movie wardrobe directives.
The outfits worn by the saucer crew saw reuse in several sci-fi productions like Amazon Women on the Moon, The Time Machine, Queen of Outer Space, and The Twilight Zone.
Tactically speaking the 360 perimeter to guard the saucer was real. This came out when I was four but I didn't see it until...I don't remember how old is was? Anyway, Leslie Neilson is so serious in this picture from the 50s. A great movie and SFX
A couple of thoughts - The FP uniforms were cooler than Star Trek (IMHO). Also, the bridge with the giant plastic sphere kind of reminds me of Prometheus when the engineer fires up the ship and you get the holographic sphere of space. FP - way ahead of its time. FP! Excellent 60+ years later.
There is no flying saucer landing that could ever match this one. And certainly none in the 1950's. The sound effects were enough to sink you back in your seat. This was true imagination unmatched ever since. MGM, I salute you for this movie. I was 8 years old when this movie was in the theatres, and it was scary as hell.

64 or there abouts years ago, and no one ever reproduced this state of the arts film, huge risk on director and actors remembering 2 golden rules 1, never change storyline 2, never change character. With CGI today this would or could be incredible

It didn't do at that well at the box office at the time, so the studio took that to mean audiences didn't want other films of this type.

A perfect Science Fiction film. More engaging than some of the recent attempts that try to dazzle us with CGI but have plot lines written by children.
Yes, unfortunately, each Star Trek movie becomes more childish. All that crap with the motorcycle finished it for me.
WAY ahead of other Sci-Fi movies in the 50's. They could never remake this movie to the same impact. It tops the list of all Sci-Fi movies. Period.

There was no "music" in this movie at all. Bebe and Luis Barron, a husband and wife team, experimented with burning circuit boards and recording the sounds they made. Then they would tape record the sounds and create "electronic tonalities". It took them over eight months to make the sound score. I highly recommend the TY video by Bebe Barron on how they created the sounds. They were not members of the musician's union so they were restricted from calling their work "music". If you watch the credits at the end of the movie, you will see "Electronic Tonalities" by Louis and Bebe Barron.
I was 10 years old. Still one of my all-time favorites. Cutting-edge special effects back in the day.
I saw some one's post that "The day the Earth stood still" space ship landing was the best ever made on film. I'm a Sci-Fi nerd. And I love that film. But I'm sorry. Forbidden Planet is the very best space ship landing. And the best movie with the very best sound and effects. :)

First film to feature a 100% electronic music track. Nice theramin, tape echo & ring modulated spacecraft landing there. They also though ahead a bit. While Kirk was always leading the way, gambling his crew unnecessarily, at least this captain waited until his crew gave him an "all's clear". I guess that wasn't studly enough for TV.
This is one of my all time favorite sci-fi movies despite the very dated special effects.

MGM knew how to make movies. This is photography with film, lenses and lighting. Cedric Gibbons art direction is in a category by itself. In a theater on a big screen for Cinemascope and four channels of stereophonic sound this is a masterpiece that isn't matched even with digital effects.
I saw this when a kid and it's in my CD collection. In my opinion thevreal enemy in this story was not Dr.. Morbious but the AI that killed the Krall civilization.
Another was in 2001 a space oddessie where the ship's computer killed everyone on board except one who was able to turn it off. I don't trust AI, if we're not careful we may end up like the Krall... Extinct.
I saw it with my mom, younger sister in her PJs, mom's friend and her daughter, in a drive-in! Thus, I saw it in mono from that little drive-in speaker... didn't matter to my 8 year old mind!
Later in life, I bought the Cinefantastique issue with the small Robby poster and also the soundtrack LP and later the CD. This movie never gets old.
Oh, I"m also writing a thinly-disguised sequel which features "Cookie," the character played by Earl Holliman, the only cast member who's still alive in 2022.
It’s amazing how we think aliens are gonna show up in a flying saucer and this movie humans show up in a flying saucer!

The best scifi from the 50s the acting was great the dialogue was tight the pace and editing were spot on and it even had little bits of humor. I remember as a kid getting a robot toy !! It was a bit scary as when you wound it up it sort of wobbled along and sparks would fly inside a clear plastic chest plate.
I first saw it as an 8-year-old on a Friday night and thought this was the absolute best sci fi of all time until "Aliens" came out when I was 24.

Beginning at ~ 0:43, notice that they remembered to put in the spaceship's *SHADOW*...
The shadows from the rocks on the right at 0:58 indicate the light source is coming from the right of the saucer. Therefore when the saucer lands the shadow should be to the left, not directly beneath it.
@@exoressdelivers70 That little detail I saw too. At 0:36 and again at 0:56 there is a light shadow in the rocks on the far right along the base of the mountains that tracks the saucer motion. Maybe the shadow cast from a moon and not the darker one from the sun. Would someone even think of that detail?
Still the best Sci-Fi movie ever made IMHO.

Of course. Tron was made 30 years after this movie so you'd expect it to have more advanced effects. But we're talking the movie itself, not just the effects. And even with that there are effects in this movie that are just as good as Tron.
+trha2222 Not really, the original Tron takes place in a graphic reality so everything looks animated and cartoony, as it should in that world. Forbidden Planet takes place in our reality so the effects have to be more realistic. Today I can't really watch Tron 1982 without thinking how primitive the effects look since CGI has come so far. It all looks like a cartoon. Forbidden Planet looks a lot less dated because so many of the techniques used, miniatures, matte paintings, animation... are still used to varying degrees still today. But besides that, Forbidden Planet is just a far superior story to either Trons. Better acting, better story telling, better characters, better direction. and all around just better executed.

The movie was released the year I was born and this must explain why I have an innate passion for sci-fi, space and spaceships. This is by far the best spaceship design ever next to the Jupiter 2 and The Starship Enterprise.

Another sci-fi flick from the period, "Robinson Crusoe on Mars," also provided some hard science in an alien setting, in particular, the performance of the inertialess drives of the enemy aliens. An obscure gem! =^[.]^=
For a supposedly formulaic sci-fi film, it certainly captured the imagination enough to inspire the iconic "Star Trek" series and subsequent franchise of films, "Star Wars" and other films like it of a similar stripe within the sci-fi genre!
Hard to call this "formulaic" because this one had such a grand concept. The monster isn't a giant spider or a dinosaur or a blob of semi-sentient jelly. The monster is you in your dreams. In terms of the ancient Greek classification of stories, this isn't man against nature or man against man. It is man against self.

There was no theremin in the soundtrack from "Forbidden Planet"; oscillators, ring modulators and tape effects (all tubes), but no theremin.

I love sci-fi but for me this is on the top of my list first saw it back in the early 60's on TV, can't get enough of it, had it on VHS, two copies on DVD ( you know, just in case), start to finish it is a masterpiece.
This awesome landing scene has been tattooed in my imagination since childhood. ... Often, particularly on rainy, thunderous nights, while cozy-tugged in bed I fantasize travelling to alien worlds with loved ones on this cool spaceship!

This is the part of the movie that Tommy and Lindsey were watching in Halloween when Tommy saw Michael Myers carrying Annie's body into the Wallace house. Those sound effects made the scene even creepier.
These 50s SciFi movies were fabulous on so many levels. You could watch them again and again, for decades. I always dug the outfits. This one was catcher's chest protector and shoulder pads. Bouffant hair on the senior space rangers, ball caps for the subordinates. Meets all the 50s SciFi movie wardrobe directives.
The outfits worn by the saucer crew saw reuse in several sci-fi productions like Amazon Women on the Moon, The Time Machine, Queen of Outer Space, and The Twilight Zone.

Tactically speaking the 360 perimeter to guard the saucer was real. This came out when I was four but I didn't see it until...I don't remember how old is was? Anyway, Leslie Neilson is so serious in this picture from the 50s. A great movie and SFX

A couple of thoughts - The FP uniforms were cooler than Star Trek (IMHO). Also, the bridge with the giant plastic sphere kind of reminds me of Prometheus when the engineer fires up the ship and you get the holographic sphere of space. FP - way ahead of its time. FP! Excellent 60+ years later.

I'm guessing this is where the Doctor Who writers got the "reverse the polarity" line from, an iconic part of the Doctor now.
There is no flying saucer landing that could ever match this one. And certainly none in the 1950's. The sound effects were enough to sink you back in your seat. This was true imagination unmatched ever since. MGM, I salute you for this movie. I was 8 years old when this movie was in the theatres, and it was scary as hell.

The original Day the Earth Stood Still saucer approach and landing was pretty cool, too.

64 or there abouts years ago, and no one ever reproduced this state of the arts film, huge risk on director and actors remembering 2 golden rules 1, never change storyline 2, never change character. With CGI today this would or could be incredible
