    Thank you squash for removing the sponsorship. It saddens me that it took away time and effort I know you put into your sponsorships, let alone your videos. This is just one of many examples that you care about your subscribers, and it makes me glad to be one. Keep up the good work, and good luck!

    A great point about a store is also to get acquainted with the feel. One terrible thing about building your keyboard online is that, unless you spend buying different switches to try them out, you don't know how it'll turn out.

    These are like REALLY expensive Build-A-Bear Workshops, except...keyboards lol
    But it's really nice. Not only do you have a selection you can experience first-hand (one of the most costly things about this hobby is having to wade through all the noise to find what you like) BUT you can also ask questions to someone who is knowledgeable (you hope) on the subject and can guide you accordingly.
    The trick is scalability. Not everyone will want to get into customs, but I think if shops like this can provide solid entry-level boards to first time buyers, then it's serving a greater purpose. I would be curious to see what the churn rate is of those customers though. Are they enticed enough to go down the rabbit hole? Are they content with their one and only purchase until it breaks? Do they have a mild degree of regret?

  • @iotaku
    @iotaku ปีที่แล้ว +47

    • @Jobieable
      @Jobieable ปีที่แล้ว

      well ive build a ''high end'' keyboard but the hobby is nothing more than building a kit, switches, stabs and keycaps. If you go in deeper you might lube your switches and stabalizers. For me the meaning of a custom keyboard is hand selecting your components, i don't see it as a bad thing being able to insta-buy the components you need in store and having the ability to try out different combinations before commiting to it.

    I think the biggest pro with these shops is you can try a whole buncha different switches and caps in a real life brick-and-mortar BEFORE even comitting a penny to whatever actuation force or keycap profile you desire. That plus the customer service is worth whatever markup they ask of you.

  • @rrinnlonginus
    @rrinnlonginus ปีที่แล้ว +6

    My first impression on such shops is that I never thought they were a scam. I know that they were enthusiasts at heart, at least mostly, cuz I went to one and I've done the research, I believe as much as you, by myself. Some online stores also do this sort of thing, and they are equivalent in terms of honesty. Seriously, is it not an enthusiast if they personally handwrite the instructions what to do and not to do to the customer?
    This thing is still new, but the trend started very well
