I used to "palm tease" my hair in my punk/new wave days. When I had shaved sides (undercut?) and longer on top. Just used the palm to "matt" the base of hair on scalp. Probably not great for hair but I had no issues. Then it would stand straight up like a porcupine! Although I did use product.
