      @Beyquisha B the bam derived from slavery when the slaves were so creative they had to utilized cooking on a hoe which is used to chop grass cotton etc the white slave owners felt they didn’t deserve to use pots and pans how creative our people were just the same as the slave owners discarding certain parts is the hogs pig feet pig tail and yes the intestines “chitlins” and the slaves made those taste good!!

    I use to make these all the time with my grandma! We use to eat with syrup or honey, a lot the times with greens and eat it with our hands.,

      The hot water makes the meal or flour expand so it don’t soak up all that grease! Best way 💯

    My mom use to make something called a hoe cake made with flour baking powder and salt and milk. I believe it was a southern thing. You fry it with a little oil it was like a biscuit but fried. Mom said it was called a hoe cake because they use to cook it on a hoe (garden tool) lol

    These look so good! We always called these Johnny Cakes. Hoe cakes have no corn meal in them. Delicious just the same!

    My grandma called them cornbread patties and we ate them with fastback bacon and alga syrup. Love these. I had forgotten about them. Glad I saw this video. I'll be making me some with some turnips.

    Looks lovely I know you say my kitchen my way, your kitchen your way. 😜 but if you buy that cornmeal self-rising you don't have to add that other stuff but sugar & your wet ingredients

    Love this my mother always made hoe cakes growing up, and hot water cornbread made with cornmeal and boiling water. Thought they were two different things🤔

    Peanut cold pressed or Avocado oil is best soaks up less grease.

    My momma was allergic to flour, so she always made hoe cakes as her bread. OMG, they were smothered in butter, there was nothing better. Thank you for making them, it brought back memories of my momma, God rest her soul❤❤❤❤

      They both have different textures as well you can tell the different when u fry them up.

      U can use the Pam olive oil with butter spray can, or the regular butter flavored Pam spray. When they done, put them on a plate and butter them with, churn style country crock butter! Omg! U will love it 😊!

    It's crazy how people in different regions called things what they are not. Hoe cakes are not made with cornmeal. We who are raised cooking scratch know the difference between hot water cornbread and a hoe cake.
