  • In the First Age of Tolkien’s works, Morgoth caused much war and strife against the Elves, Men and Dwarves. Before claiming domination over the earth, the Free-Peoples banded together for one last war of the age… Thank you all so much for your support! I’ll see you all next week with part two of Melkor’s history! As always, a great thanks to the online artists whose visual works made this video possible! If you are one of the artists, please let me know and I will post your name and a link to your work in this description!

    You know, I think of the stories of the First Age, and Beleriand, and often times think it is the most epic part of Tolkien's universe, but then I remember the events in the Second Age, with the Númenóreans and Melkor's Lieutenant, Sauron, then think of the Third Age, with the kingdoms of Gondor and Arnor, and remember that ALL of the timeline of Beleriand, Middle Earth, and the shaping of the world are so amazing. Tolkien no doubt created the most in depth, and absolutely epic fantasy universe of all time.

      massaweed420 amen to that and the way he writes it based on his experiences in ww1 is just awesome and not to mention tolkains elvish language is now a recognised and studied language

    • @massaweed420
      @massaweed420 6 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      Yeah, I was pretty stoked when I saw that about the languages he made! At one time about 10 years ago, I had learned a pretty decent chunk of Qenya and Sindarin languages, but I've forgotten most of it. It really added to the experience of reading his works though when you knew what the elvish names and such meant!

      That's what's so amazing about fantasy, you have a personal relationship with it. We all see the world differently, yet the same and it reflects our individuality.

    • @RandyLeftHandy
      @RandyLeftHandy 6 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      SANITYISFORTHEWEAK The series is called "A Song of Ice and Fire." I don't think writing it off as "it sucks" is a fair assessment of the series, which is currently unfinished. It is much more busy than LOTR and places it's focus more on interpersonal relationships and misdirection than simply telling the story. They are only similar in that they are fantasy, the format of the story is vastly different.

    • @RandyLeftHandy
      @RandyLeftHandy 6 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      SANITYISFORTHEWEAK I'm getting the feeling that you're basing your assumption off of the television show and that you haven't actually read the novels.

    These are terrific. Seriously. I just turned 50 and have been a enjoying Tolkien’s Expanded Universe since I was 8, which is when I first cracked “Fellowship”.(I read the “Hobbit” last because I’d seen the animated movie back in the day and knew the story well. In fact, out of everything put on screen from Tolkien’s works, “The Hobbit” is, BY FAR, the most true to Tolkien’s original work. “The Silmarillion” is my favorite novel of any kind in my entire life. A single chapter of “The Silmarillion” is as epic as the entire “Lord of the Rings” saga, imho. I’m grateful for the content. It’s a different way to renew my acquaintances with the entire body of work. I know every word Tolkien wrote by heart, and my imagination has done a fine job over the years, of bringing the Tolkien-verse to life for me.

    In the video I said the kingship of Gondolin passed from Fingon to Turgon, but I meant the High Kingship of the Ñoldor passed, as Turgon had established Gondolin. Another small correction: the Door of Night is on the west side of the world, not the east. Thank you to Jeb Payne and

    Hmmm... fun suggestions... it's April Fool's and Easter on the same day... how about a what-if scenario, "what if Gollum had tried some of Sam's rabbit stew?" Beautiful video history of the rise and fall of Morgoth the Dark Lord! A suggestion for a light topic could be a biography of Goldberry! I know there's a lot of discussion about Tom Bombadil but there's not a lot of Review on Goldberry by her self. It would be interesting to hear your thoughts about what she was. (Was she a Maiar or Elf?) Was she another type of spirit? I would also love your thoughts on her history and how her fate is connected to Bombadil and the natural world of Arda! Just a suggestion! Do you suppose Thorondor is the avatar of Manwe himself? I remember reading the Silmarillion and wondering this, and if it was through a direct avatar that Manwe assisted the Free-People, which might mean he never truly abandoned them. Sorry for the weird thought, it just occurred to me as I listened to this, and Thorondor's role in saving Fingolfin's body.

    3. What if Ungoliant had managed to consume the Silmarils before the Balrogs could reach her?

    So glad Turin kills Morgoth in the Final battle, getting revenge for his family and all the free peoples of middle earth. Tolkein made Men noticeably flawed but they do great deeds that change the world killing dragons, fighting/killing morgoth, sacrificing themselves for elves etc.

      Jeb Payne I think you are mistaken Turin doesn't kill Morgoth the Valar do that

      Eru Illuvatar nope, i mean many ages after that. Morgoth returns to the world raises his armies again and all free peoples with the ainur return to fight in Dagor Dagorath and Turin kills Morgoth. It is prophesied in the Second prophecy of Mandos. Here is a video Men of the West did on it. th-cam.com/video/gmcEt5FSXrQ/w-d-xo.html

You feel free to pick which one, of course... I wonder if anyone's done anything along the lines of "Culinary History of Middle Earth"?

    Excellent video. For something more lighthearted, I would love for you to do a video about the Three Farthing Stone and other unique structures or areas of the Shire. Maybe one about The Shire before Hobbits or one specifically about how the Hobbits colonized The Shire.

    Like so many... episodes involving history of a fictional universe, I would need to study this material many, MANY times before I could fully comprehend it as I failed to fully comprehend the names of the characters involved, lol. Still, VERY nice work. You've clearly done your homework involving research.

    I'd like to think that when Melkor was sent through the door of night that he began some angry rant about "I am Melkor! I will return! Rarr rarr rarr!", and someone (one of the Valar perhaps) was like "SHUUUUT UUUP!" and "this is Sparta" kicked him, in his chest, through the door... Maybe followed with a toilet flushing sound as he disappears into the void.

    Wonderful video! Seeing the full history of Morgoth in just a couple of videos is a real treat. Hopefully the upcoming TV series (assuming it's about the Silmarillion) will do his craven evil justice.
    Now, April Fools...perhaps you could do a video about the All-New, Recently Discovered! Full Version of the Sequel To the Lord of the Rings, Wherein Goldilocks Gamgee Finds the One Fork in her Ancient Silverware Drawer and Becomes the New Dark Lord? (Abbreviated as ANRDFVSTLOTRWGGFOFASDBNDL)
    I don't know, some sort of ridiculous fan-fiction (poorly disguised as actual lore) could be fun...
