    A fun fact about him is that he is 87 by the time of the war of the ring, so Elrond easily extended Aragorn's and Arwen's engagement for at least 40-50 years! Talk about an engagement commitment.

    • @otaku-sempai2197
      @otaku-sempai2197 6 ปีที่แล้ว +74

      Let's see: Aragorn fell in love with Arwen when they first met in T.A. 2951. They plighted their troth on Midsummer's Day of 2980, and wed on Midsummer's Day of 3019. So, an engagement of exactly 39 years.

    • @otaku-sempai2197
      @otaku-sempai2197 6 ปีที่แล้ว +23

      Hmmm, I though I already posted a reply. Aragorn and Arwen first met in the year 2951 after Aragorn's twentieth birthday, but they became engaged at Mid-year in 2980. So their engagement lasted for 39 years to the day.

    • @alantaylor6691

      Andrew, are you trying to fight people?

    • @otaku-sempai2197
      @otaku-sempai2197 6 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      I'm not sure why you would even ask that. All I did was post a clarification pointing out that Aragorn and Arwen did not become engaged soon after they first met, but much later. I only ended up posting it twice because I didn't realize that there was a substantial delay before the original comment actually posted.

    I too find Aragorn to be the most compelling character in Tolkiens Tale. He is the perfect fusion of Might and Valor, coupled with, Humility and Wisdom. A Christ-Like Character indeed.
    And the One to make Public the heroism of the Hobbits, to officially make it known Whom He holds in High Regard, though He be The King.

      The noblest of gestures, to recognize great deeds are not done alone. Aragon has and always will be my favorite character ever conceived; the epitome of a choice leader, one striving on not because of want of power, but from the selfless desire to serve and protect all people and races. I liked the fact that he strove to make peace with the Easterlings and Haradrim as he led the rebuilding of the world. I'm afraid we will never see such a leader in our reality until the Savior comes again, vanguishes the adversary, and celestializes this world.

    What I love is that at the end of the war of the ring, Aragorn ends it in peace? He makes peace with the other men who followed Sauron, and he gives the Hobbits and Woses their lands as native reserves. It does not end in blood and glory but peace and progressiveness, an ending rarely given by authors in more modern times.

    • @SantomPh

      Aragorn orders that Mordor be cleaned and the human slaves of Nurnen be its masters, but that Minas Morgul is so evil it cannot be cleaned for a very long time.
      He does have to fight the Easterlings again, but that is much later.

    Personally I’m happy peter Jackson ultimately ended up picking Viggo Mortensen to play Aragorn over Stuart Townsend because I could believe viggo as the grizzled hard outdoorsy honorable badass swordsman but I couldn’t really picture Stuart being anywhere close to that

    • @someguythatlookslikeme8306
      @someguythatlookslikeme8306 6 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      I agree 100%. Viggo is such a perfect choice, his style of acting makes him the grizzled outdoorsey Ranger that we know and Love; as well as the regal, noble, just, & powerful King of Gondor and Arnor!
      I think PJ's pick for casting director was the best pick of all time! No other cast is so on point as these movies! I can not picture anybody else in these roles.

    Aragorn was always my favorite from Lord of the Rings, but overall I admire Hurin. He stood to the last when all was hopeless. He never knew his sacrifice would have any meaning but he fought anyway (we must also recognize brother Huor here). His final stand ensured Turgon's escape, part of Ulmo's plan to get Tuor to Gondolin, from which a new star arose and led to Morgoth's defeat.

    I find it interesting that Aragorn took so many different names. On one hand it adds to the change in his character throughout the years. It's also sort the reverse of real history where there are some legendary kings and warriors that historians do not think really existed, but were many people combined.

    Aragorn has always been my fave character, book and film. When I first heard Viggo had been cast I'd never seen him before and when I saw a photo of him with short light hair and blue eyes I said NOOO he's not Ari! But then I said the same about McKellen when I found out he was going to play Gandalf because the only 2 things I'd ever seen Sir Ian in were Apt Pupil where he played an ex Nazi and Richard III! But I was quickly converted like 3 minutes into the movie :D. My other fave characters are Gimli (movie Gimli--comic relief), Theoden (book and film.) I didn't like Boromir in the book but I cried when Sean Bean died (yet again :D). And I thought Sir Christopher Lee just rocked as Saruman! I was sorry Eomer didn't have a bigger role but had the BEST helmet! Personally I liked Eowyn better than Arwen, Miranda Otto was so good! My main beef in casting has always been Faramir, he was too wimpy and I didn't like them changing his character. All the hobbits were fine, especially Frodo and Sammy. I just got tired of Frodo falling down! By the end of RoTK I was like "There he goes again."

      To be fair with Frodo he did bear the One Ring on a chain around his neck. Try that when drawing secretly closer to Sauron and see how steady on your feet you are. Sam took it upon himself thinking Frodo dead and found it burdensome as well.

    I like the details in the Appendices (only alluded to by Strider in the main narrative) of the decades of errantry and military leadership the character has under his belt by the time we even meet him - i.e. it’s not *only* the legitimacy of his claim to kingship and the purity of his Númenórean bloodline (which are real, significant things in this story) but also he is GOOD at being a chieftan. He’s put in the reps.

      Even people are capable of dying of a broken heart. So it's not at all surprising for an Elf, especially one as sensitive as Arwen.

    Although I loved Viggo's portrayal, I did not like the changes to the character in the movie. P. Jackson made Aragorn into a reluctant leader who had to be dragged, sighing, to the throne. That was a far departure from the books. His relationship to his lineage was so strong that he carried the broken sword with him, which made for some incredible moments in the books, for example, fending off the Nazgul at Weathertop with a broken sword. I don't think they did his arc much service by making him estranged from his destiny. That being said, Viggo was the boss.

    Aragorn son of Arathorn is a man full of hope and through him we learn that there is always hope even when things may look bad. His time in Middle-Earth helped bring about restoration and peace and thus he is a hopeful man who went on to become who he was born to be because Sauron feared him and what he may become.

    Thanks so much for sharing this video. As much as I love the Lord of the Rings films, I have quietly raged about the changes they made to Aragorn's character. From now on, instead of trying to explain the Aragorn of the books, I'm just going to send people to watch your video. :)

    I swear, this is the channel I've been looking for all my life! Epic video! It's amazing how awesome of a character Aragorn is even if you don't know of his deeds before Lord of the Rings. I have a few video ideas that might be cool.
    1. What if Gandalf was not resurrected? It'd be interesting what would happen to Rohan, as Theoden would not be freed of Saruman and Grima's influence.
    2. What if the entire Fellowship traveled to Mordor with Frodo? Except maybe Boromir and Aragorn, for they may have gone to Minas Tirith instead.

    Definitely my favorite character too! I cried when I read the appendix where he dies, although more out of sympathy for Arwen being left without him. I wrote an essay in my uni days about Aragorn, I remember he was apparently originally supposed to be a grumpy hobbit with some weird name or something such but evolved into our king in making. Also, I explored the differences with his film counterpart, which is a much darker and conflicted character than in the books which I understand from a filmmaker's perspective but ultimately it makes no difference overall to his role. Do you have an opinion about these changes?

    I mentioned this in a response to someone elses post, but Im going to say it here:
    Ive read Peter Jackson picked his casting director for this (the name escapes me. Sorry!) and Im so glad he did as every role in LOTR, as well as the hobbit movies are so on point!
    Viggo Mortenson is the best possible pick for Aragorn. I can not picture anybody else for this role, as he flows through the growing character of Strider/Aragorn so well. The rough and ready Ranger of the North who is an honorable and noble figure. Able to handle himself in a tavern brawl but unimaginable in causing one. A loner who can inspire a squad of like-minded individualists to perform as a team, and then quickly disperse for the greater good of individual survival.
    The life of a Ranger of the North would be both lonely(on duty) and communal(family, clan, father, and husband). The unsung heros of humanity, defending us all with only the Elves to know.
    Brave, wilderness skilled, a hunter, soldier, killer of foulness and true friend. But most of all perhaps, untamed nobility.
    Then Viggo can go from this deep individual who ia a hallmark of what Americans like to think of as true grit; go directly into the stern patriarchical nobility of feudal overlordship; when a benevolent and just ruler leads not just because of his birthright but because he is the most suited, able, and inspirational person to do so.
    In an era where we in the "real" world are in a constant state of second guessing all our decisions, our moral directions, as well as the very essence of what is truly "good" or "evil"; many consider LOTR to be a simplistic story of black vs white sides of a similar coin.
    Viggo gives such depth to just this character that he can inspire the jaded and confused people of an increasingly static culture to walk out of theaters hoping to go forth and do good in this world!
    Peter Jacksons entire cast was like this in that I cant(and dont want to) see any other actor portraying these roles. I cant see Pippin or Merry reversed(the two most closely pictured characters) without ruining the individual actors portrayals! They were fantastic! They were exactly how I pictured them to look if real flesh was sculpted to their personalities!
    I have heard some compare LOTR to GoT, and there is NO comparison. The stories are as different as Expressionistic Oil Painting and Statistical Analysis. Completely different things. I dont see any intellectual depth to someone who would disparage either author when they are such completely different creations.
    Tolkein was the first to create such a complete world. There are so many copies now that we have forgot his was the ONLY complete fantasy of its like to that time.
    Peter Jackson is the only person I feel, who could have done this, and created such amazing beauty. He did it so well, but this cast was/is/shall forever be - The BEST lineup for a production EVER!! No one else can possibly get this many perfectly matched actors with characters.
    I am obviously a Tolkein fan before seeing these movies, but I am just so happy that I got to see such a wonderful portrayal of a story I read & loved when I was young. A story that meant a lot to me.
    It was also the first books I ever read. Thank you Mr Tolkein & Mr Jackson. You too Viggo and Sauron. Both important here.
    -sg

    When I first read the Lord of the Rings, Aragorn was my favorite too, but as I read it over and over I realized that while Aragorn was indeed a great warrior, he could not take the One Ring to Mordor to have it unmade. Rightly did Elrond state that Frodo seems to be appointed to this task, and if he can not do so he believed no one could. After the breaking of the Fellowship, the eye of Sauron focused on the stronger member, not suspecting that two hobbits dared enter Mordor to destroy his ring. Even Frodo was deceived by Gollum into thinking Sam was his enemy, but Sam carried Frodo up Mount Doom when he could go no further. Gollum was dismissed and Frodo decided to keep the ring. Gollum came running out of the shadows and struggled with Frodo until at last he bit his finger off to obtain the ring. His joy didn't last long as both he and the ring fell into the fires of Mount Doom and the ring was unmade. Half of Sauron's power was in that ring and all of a sudden the servants of Mordor had no master. Yes, Aragorn was great in many ways, but it was the small hobbit Frodo, and the traitor Gollum that won the day.

    Amazon made a colossal blunder when it decided to do a Tolkien film project. Instead of The Rings of Power what they
    should have done was The Adventures of Strider. This would have been exciting. This would have been about the years
    when Aragorn was Strider the Ranger. Despite being a Dunedain, Strider spent decades patrolling many different areas
    of Middle-earth -- Mirkwood, Rohan, Gondor, the south, the Shire, Fangorn, Lothlorien, etc. He would have encountered
    many types of beings and monsters --- Haradrim, Umbar man, Dunlendings, Variags, orcs, goblins, trolls, elves dwarves,
    and so much more. Amazon had an opportunity and they blew it for some strange story of Galadriel as a shield maiden.
    The Adventures of Strider could easily have POC actors with no argument. Though these would be stories that are not
    written by Tolkien, they could still be within the Middle-earth TA timeline.
