That is exactly what I’ve said for many years. If certainteed is unwilling to address an obvious problem. What makes you think this won’t be you next. I don’t think they will sweep this under the rug forever. Just like w GAF back in 80s and tamko in early 2000s. They ran from defects until their business suffered. Then they fixed them. By then many of those defectives were replaced. I think that is their plan.

I put a ton of landmarks on roofs last year. Got hit with baseball size hail beginning of June. They did just fine and survived it. The Northgates, well, they did even better
Confused why a Northgate would outperform a Landmark Pro. Was it the Northgate Climate Flex or traditional Northgate? I thought Landmark Pro was tops before getting into the Presidential lineup. A little help here if you please... Thank you in advance.
@@243wayne1 Northgate is a modified SBS shingle which has a rubberized layer which makes it a Class 4 impact rated shingle while the Landmark Pro is a Class 3 rated shingle and is not an SBS modified shingle. The only reason I know this is because I got hit with my first hail storm last week that did some decent damage to a 6 yr old GAF roof. The GAF shingles just didn't hold up to the impact of the hail at all. So I'm not surprised Northgate did better than a standard asphalt shingle.

Granule loss is a BIG problem with Certainteed shingles. I have had Grand Manor shingles on my house for over 12 years and every day my deck has granules on it. This is supposed to be a fifty year roof and my gutters are loaded with granules from the Certainteed Grand Manor shingles. If you read the warranty info you’ll find no mention of granule retention.
I think this will help me decide for our roof as so far I only heard about Gaf timberline , Owen Corning … landmark pro is new to us but will definitely compare
GAF is the #1 Shingle but those are all top 3. The OC have a sure nail strip they are really nice I installed those the last 3 years. Landmarks are sweet my new company are installing these this season.

I’ve gone back out on the roofs we put on this year. They are failing. The reason they are failing is due to double stacking (opinion). They even put a fluorescent sticker that says don’t double stack. I went to Ennis where they are produced. They are double stacked. That was sept 10th. I’m sure you are aware how quickly they seal together in Texas summers. How quick do they seal together when 3600 to 7200 lbs is sitting on top of it while it is 100 degrees outside. These guys are willing to go thru any means necessary to maintain class 4 rating. The last job I put them on had so much stress on every bundle that the dragons tooth was not even lining up with the bottom piece of shingle. These shingles have so much weight on them it squeezes the two pieces together. A long time shingle rep, Chuck Arista, a prince of a guy, told me that that is sure sign of a problem. He was right though it was many years ago. GAF AND OC are good products.
I have converted my business to gaf and Owens Corning. Prices are same and I have to have a shingle that is trustworthy. Their actions are the same as if I mistreated my customer if I don’t see this thru on the customers behalf.

UBH built the house, they were the only one that didn't shut down for Covid. They had 95% of the lumber and everything in their lumber yard in Shreveport LA, no one else could get materials.

I’m a 40 yr contractor in Dallas market. Certainteed produced out of Ennis Texas is my biggest source of headaches in my career. Never ever will I use them again. Every roof I’ve reported as defective in 2023 is certainteed. We do not bring it up to a customer unless it is bad. They deny every claim. They are completely inundated with claims for defects. They deny all. This time they bullied the wrong customer. My customer will nail them to the wall. I never wish bad for other companies but these guys have gone off the rails.

I took them back to Beacon Roofing Supply and they were frustrated with how often contractors kept bringing in shingles for this same problem. They offered to credit my account $300 for the trouble. This was during 100 temps. No way there shingles should be hard. Not move to November. I had 2 jobs. One was my daughters house. These shingles were so hard that they would break when nailing them down. We made 5 trips replacing shingles to get replacements. We called CertainTeed They didn’t care enough to even return my call. This was a Friday and rain was in forecasts on Monday. We had torn old roof off and noticed the problem before installing new ones. Finally CertainTeed returns my call on Monday and our local rep comes to job. She gathers 2-3 shingles and tells my customer that the shingles are certainly defective and would be taken care of. Then nothing for six weeks. We submitted info showing this is an 85 sq $35,000 job and thereafter they tell us that the shingles are fine. I have hired legal help and hope a judge makes an example of CertainTeed. This customer is in his 80s and he doesn’t know what to do next. I took samples to beacon and spoke to the GM. I told him I have a problem. He said you and everyone else is having problems w CertainTeed. I can’t tell if shingles were produced incorrectly or if the problem is from stacking the shingles. CertainTeed started putting a big sticker on side of bundles that says do not stack. I went down to Ennis Texas where they produce shingles and products were stacked out in 100 temps and they were stacked for acres and acres. I went to beacon and same thing. All manufacturers have defects on occasion but this is absurd. Is this the kind of products I want to use in future. Never again. I have a brand new account with a newer distributor in Dallas. I ordered this matching product again last week and they called to tell me they were out of stock on all brands of this shingle except for CertainTeed. They had access to plenty of it. I had to say no thank you. When I interviewed 3 attorneys I told them I want a bulldog. CertainTeed shouldn’t be able to get by with this. Does this give you clarity? Any further info just ask? On my last two jobs of certainteed we discovered 5 different dates of manufacturing. On our shingles. They were all delivered to different distributors all acrosstexas and Oklahoma. They were produced from April to November. One more minor detail. The problem was with the field shingles and the ridge. They are not created at same time. It is with at least 3 different colors. in my opinion Shingle manufacturer all produce similarly performing shingles. That said they all use the same techniques with there spin on it and they all use the same materials and they all have to go through independent testing to pass baseline standards in the USA. I would say most shingles (from any manufacturer) has a minimal edge over their competition in certain performance segments. So what I suggest is find out what's important to your home. What does this mean...if u constantly have shingles blowing off choose a shingle that outperforms in that segment. If you care about color choose a shingle based on color. If you care about granule loss pick a shingle know for that. If you have hail storms all the time pick a shingle that is a SBS shingle. Most of these shingles manufacturers have slight advantages when it comes to specific performance segments. Basically find the most important performance segment that matters to u and base selecting a shingle on that. And always select an installer base on the a high google review rating and amount of google reviews it says a lot about the company. Also make sure those review are relevant meaning they at least have a couple a month every month for years.

I hired a contractor who will install landmark pro, but another contractor who wanted to install GAF Timberline HDZ is telling me I’m making a mistake. Do you agree?
Landmark Pro is a step above the GAF HDZ shingle however to be fair u should consider the GAF HDZ Ultra they r comparable shingles...but landmark pro is by far better than the regular GAF HDZ shingle ...so if u want apples to apples (same level shingles) ck out the GAF HDZ Ultra the real difference is that it has 2 shadow lines instead of one that u get from Landmark Pro and the HDZ ULTRA also has an unlimited wind warranty if that's installed by a certified GAF contractor who uses a certain amount of GAF accessories and applies for the extended warranty. Good luck shopping if u like double shadow lines and had shingles blow off ur old roof then Maybe u want to go the HDZ Ultra route...enjoy shopping materials ...the company is more important tho ..just saying don't discount the importance of that.

He stated based on his experience CT holds up very well. I am looking for more detailed reviews from several roofers just in case he is biased.
In the last 3 weeks I have contacted all the engineers I can find. I have used this route to make sure a manufacturer knows I am serious about pursuing this a hand full of defective products. . I have been told that many of engineering firms are on retainer w insurance companies and manufacturers. Therefore finding one who will simply test these products so we are clear on what the problem is. Any contractor will tell you that it is not uncommon to find a newer install that has blistering and bubbling on the shingles. I try not to bring it up because all manufacturers have problems here and there. I do not report these as it will never result in a replacement by manufacturer. But this is just unacceptable. I’m not trying to talk anyone into doing anything. But if contractors let these guys get by with this action it will never get better.
I ran into CertainTeed shingles having dimensional issues and defects. Where the rain tab and reveals we’re not the same width across. Thus making it hard to roof straight lines. Anyone else run into similar issues? I wish I could share a picture of what I mean. They would not replace the defected shingles either.
Goodness. That was in 2013 with the Horizon Shingles. That has zero to do with modern day shingles. It only proves that certainteed is willing to produce millions of squares of shingles. Then when they are defective they ran from it knowing that they had serious problem. Only when a court got involved. Not the kind of company I will use going forward. These are not entry shingles in question. They are 50 yr class 4 shingles.
This is a terrible argument you can get a thicker steak like a London broil cook it and it would taste like crap. Then you could get a smaller filet mignon and it would be superior by far.

Flexibility is also important/ I compared a full malarky vista class 4 shingle with the certainteed and that landmark shingle easily cracked and shed granules while the malarky suffered no damage when bent or rolled up..thats the difference of an SBS polymer rubberized shingle vs an asphalt one no matter how thick, its fragile by comparison
Do not use CertainTeed landmark Solaris shingles I repeat do not use CertainTeed landmark Solaris shingles I put a roof on my house in 2022. It began losing granules and didn’t stop losing granules for a year and a half the contractor sent out the sales rep. They took a sample sent it to the lab and they quickly came back with a decision that they needed to replace the shingles. They will only cover installation cost not a tear off our disposal, they only will provide shingles no underlayment no ice and water no sheet metal piping. The second roof went on a week ago. These shingles are so shitty during the installation process workers walking on the roof caused granules lost and bare spots in the shingles, exposing the tar that makes the granules stick. You can rub your finger on the shingle down to the tar s this will be the third tear off in less than two years. I’ve obtained an attorney and I’m suing everyone do not use CertainTeed products.
Landmark lifetime architectural shingles installed in 2017 with a new plywood decking. I've now had 5 or 6 shingles delaminate and fall off the roof. Absolute garbage product. Roofer will now be back twice to repair. I can't find any warranty details on their website in Canada.
My favorite shingle, certainteed certified shingler here. In Ontario Canada they are by far the best on the market.

What size nail do you use for CertainTeed shingles Landmark Pro and Landmark?
we use an 1 1/4" nails
They settled a class action lawsuit in Canada as they had quality issues. Do your research.

It began losing granules and didn’t stop losing granules for a year and a half the contractor sent out the sales rep. They took a sample sent it to the lab and they quickly came back with a decision that they needed to replace the shingles. They will only cover installation cost not a tear off our disposal, they only will provide shingles no underlayment no ice and water no sheet metal piping. The second roof went on a week ago. These shingles are so shitty during the installation process workers walking on the roof caused granules lost and bare spots in the shingles, exposing the tar that makes the granules stick. You can rub your finger on the shingle down to the tar s
this will be the third tear off in less than two years. I’ve obtained an attorney and I’m suing everyone do not use CertainTeed products.
Landmark lifetime architectural shingles installed in 2017 with a new plywood decking. I've now had 5 or 6 shingles delaminate and fall off the roof. Absolute garbage product. Roofer will now be back twice to repair. I can't find any warranty details on their website in Canada.
