I work for a roofing company and I fully back Owen’s Corning shingles. I don’t have any issue with certainteed (besides the new horizons that were overpriced and have horrible issues with spider cracking). Certainteed makes a decent shingle, heavy gauge, nice tar line. But I definitely feel like the roofer in this video has probably had to compete hard against Owens Corning in the past and that’s the reason why he has a hate on for them. The Oakridge shingle still has. A heavy gauge, and I’ve seen 15-20 year old roofs that my company has done that still look nicer than anyone else’s roof in the neighbourhood. The tar line is consistent and thick, and the granular holds on very nicely with this shingle. Owens Corning will warranty this shingle for 50 years through their platinum warranty program (select installers only). The duration shingle includes the mesh strip for 2 reasons: 1. Impact resistance as mentioned in the video, and 2. Tarline adhesion. The reason duration shingles have earned themselves such a solid reputation is because the mesh strip allows the tarline to sink into the body of the shingle, providing incredibly tight and long lasting adhesion. The oft I strongly disagree with in this video is pointing out how thick and durable certainteed shingles are while falsely claiming that OC shingles aren’t. Any roofer that’s had to carry a bundle of duration or Oakridge shingles up a ladder knows they are very thick and heavy, especially compared to shingles like iko and BP. This feels completely disingenuous to me, and as a result I don’t trust this source. For the record, I used duration shingles on my house.
The actual reason I don't like OC is because I have not seen that they stand up to hail at all. Their Storm shingle line is very poor at resisting damage. I have also had to deal with their warranty claim department on a house and it was like dealing with the government. They did not take care of the situation very well. Don't like anything about OC.
@@homesteadroofing The OC Duration Flex actually has the highest hail impact rating out of all tested products according to the Insurance Institute for Business and Home Safety. I would trust their scientific testing standards over somebody who is obviously biased against OC. Also, you left the OC Duration Flex out of your video, which is OC's SBS polymer modified shingle with Class 4 impact resistance. I can only assume that was an intentional oversight?
Ive been installing shingles for 36 yrs in middle Tennessee. There's lots of variables that go into a roof lasting. One job we installed with owens corning Oakridge 30 lasted 22 yrs. 12 yrs prior he had an addition added and the roofer color matched with a GAF Timberline. When we installed the new roof, the Oakridge shingles looked better than the GAF shingles installed on the addition. Twice as old and in the same environment. I installed the 25 yr elk shingle on my personal home 22 yr ago, which GAF bought out elk that yr. Things change, materials change! The 3 tab Owens corning seemed to last longer too. Im speaking about materials installed 20 to 25 yrs ago. Im gonna install a new roof on my personal home this yr. Im going with Certain teed. Ive installed them all. They seem to be the best for this climate.
We don't get much hail here in SW, Florida. I got a Owen's Corning Duration shingle roof about 13 years ago. After two hurricanes, including a direct hit by Hurricane Ian, not a single shingle was damaged or blown off.
I’m located in Hillsborough County, Florida, and we do not have a hail problem here. So, recommendations that focus on hail damage are not applicable in all geographic areas of the U.S. I am in the process of researching shingles and roofing companies for a replacement roof. Presently, based on other research, I am inclined to go with Owen Corning’s Duration Platinum.
You must be knew to Florida...Im in Homosassa about ab hour north of you and we have been hit several times with heavy hail in the last 8 years Ive been here@@OlsenTheWonderDog
I had a roof put on in the fall using Certainteed Landmark and lots of areas didn't seal well. It was likely due to a bad install, and the roofer assured me that come spring they'd heat up and seal. Those problem areas never really did look right even in spring.
That should be addressed right away. Get another roofer out there to inspect it. Offer to pay the roofer for a full inspection and report. If it's not installed correctly, or the product failed, you want to get it taken care of before any big winds.
sealing issues and granule loss are what Ive heard about with these... if they arent sealing soon after install, you Better get them addressed as the longer you wait the less likely they will Ever seal right as dirt and debris get under the sealing surface and make the seal weak or impossible over time
Never will seal. Any competent roofer won't do a roof job if there isn't enough hot weather remaining the year the roof is installed. My father wouldn't do roof jobs much past August in Missouri.
Installing Certainteed Landmark roof on March 6 here in Western Washington. Passed on the IKO Cambridge. Replacing a 3 tab builder grade that lasted 17 years with maintenance.
Your opinion about Owens Cornikng is the region you live in. "You would not install Owens Corning"... you need to specify in the area you live in. Malarkey was sued a while back for $2.5 million for EPA violations at their manufacturing plant. I live in Arizona and I'm going to install Owens Corning duration shingles on my home that are less expensive than malarkey, and do a fantastic job with their proprietary nailing strip and adhesive properties.
I have these in my roof, was just destroyed with hail Last year. Neighbors roof blew off, none of my shingles. I think maybe if you get hail it might not be the best
My Heritage shingles have been on my roof for 18 years now they have been through multiple hail storms and winds over 80 mph and not 1 shingle has blown off or been hail damaged,we just got 1" hail last week and no damage.
40 years of roofing in Lake Tahoe, California elevation 6500 feet nothing I have installed has blown off and I’ve installed every single there is in the market it’s the installation not the product you don’t hit the nail line and you shingles will just blow right off or delaminate like I said we get 100 mile an hour plus winds up here in the mountains and we deal with ice and snow in the feet. My shit isn’t going anywhere. Sorry that you guys that are having problems with your roof blowing off try hitting the nail line just saying
I had an insurance hail damage claim in 2012 (west side of Denver). A local roofer offered to upgrade to 50 year warranty Malarkey SBS hail resistant architectural shingles no charge. I had never heard of Malarkey but then figured out they made good stuff. The roofer did a beautiful job. I also had them reflash the chimney for good measure. Since then we have had some decent hail but it seemed like high winds were taking the toll on neighbors roofs more than hail. Ours was solid as a rock. No lifting or hail damage. We finally moved and it still looked great and passed inspection after 10 years. Plus we got an insurance discount for the type of roof. Next time I need a roof I will find one with a very high wind rating, not just hail resistant. If I need to pay an extra $1000 out of pocket then so be it. It's the difference of having confidence in your home during extreme weather and avoiding catastrophic damage.
I have Owen-Corning Oakridge shingles on my house and they are not a builder grade shingle and there is no way a shingle is going to blow off from my roof. It would take 130 mile an hour winds in a hurricane to do that, and not even sure then. We have had hail storms and the insurance company couldn't find any damage so shingles are pretty tough. Just had another severe hail storm so waiting for adjustor. It could be 50/50 chance if they replace roof after 14 years. Update: I would rather have one of your top picks that resist hail damage. Why get a new roof then it gets damaged right after you install it.
What do you think about the GAF Timberline? I’ve personally developed a love hate relationship with these shingles because of the same reason. I love how well they seal to one another but also hate it because I’m a repair specialist in Texas, and as you can imagine the seal strips really SEAL with the extreme hot and cold we experience here in DFW
Texas Heat kills all your favorites. The glues dry up and delaminates your laminate shingle overtime. Certainteedtoblowoff, Tamko, and Atlas are the most wind repairs in this area. Hail is Hail and large hail will require replacement of any manufacture. Class 4 will hold up to smaller hail and will save you money on your premiums here in Texas and hopefully your deductible, not having to replace your roof during smaller hail events. OC oakridge is an entry level laminate shingle and is a great upgrade for someone with a 3-tab roof wanting a laminate shingle with 110 mph wind rating and on a budget. If you can afford a higher wind rating OC Duration is a good quality shingle and GAF HDZ is a close 2nd, both can upgrade to a class 4 Impact resistant. When it comes to shingles in the extreme heat of Texas it comes down to glue performance & granule retention. I agree about Tamko... pure trash. Unfortunately the roofer that installed my roof used Tamko - 15yrs ago and I regret trusting his opinion. Just waiting for a hail storm. Going back with 24g standing seam 4sure.
I have been searching and can not find anyone else complaining about the Malarkey Vista delaminating from the southern heat. Is this comment based off hear-say or your real world install and call back situatuons? I was all set on this shingle until ai read this. Besides it is one of the few quality SBS IR shingles I can get down south- we are always subject to junk supplies down here. Almost all the supply houses down here push Tampko- yuck!
@@shaun4bigblocks993 Big malarky vista fan here, almost ready to go with them...Ive examined them in had compared to other brands and they Are a different breed, Tough! However, Ive heard they are suited to colder climate areas and Not suited to high heat areas...issues being they blister up from the heat...never ever heard of vista delaminating though.. that shingle is flexible, granules embeeded solidly into it and highly unlikely to delaminate. GAF looks like it would delaminate if you looked crooked at it
Dallas is hot, at times really hot. I actually like the Duration Storm because it is not SBS asphalt. The SBS asphalt does not like our heat and ages more quickly here. SBS is also softer and should not be installed parts of the summer. Different markets different answers. PS- Love the CertainTeed Landmark. It is now a Class 3 IR product along with OC Duration.
Hi there. we had a massive Hail Storm in the State of SC recently I am researching brands and class before I pick a Roofing company in regards to what they use.may I ask what type of OC class or grade are your shingles ..Thankyou I am trying to pick a quality and affordable type thanks
What is interesting is how the weather plays with the shingle lifetime. We bought 25 year shingles and they were going to go the full run, but the decking wood was from 1961 and was buckling lifting some shingles. This was on the north side of the house where the snow sits all day and doesn't melt because the sun hits it only for an hour. The shingles were 23 years old, no underlayment and had another 5 years left in them. I only know people that had problems with the IKO fiasco from the early 2000s. All of them had black roofs. Pretty much anybody with a black roof in my neighborhood is changing the shingles twice as much. The rest of us with light mint and beige shingles seems to last quite a while. Almost everything is 3 tab. Just now we have around 5% with HD shingles. In Canada, where I live, it will get up to 100 degrees and humid (good luck in breathing) and down to -12 (good luck breathing with frozen nostrils). Occasionally we get 50mph winds but average 37mph. Not much hail.
I used Tamko Heritage shingles on my home in 2001. Haven't had an issue yet. I will use Certainteed this next round. I think I got my mileage out of the Tamko. Probably on borrowed time.
Thanks. One roofer we're talking with is suggesting Certainteed Landmark, but their website has nothing but horrible reviews. Can you elaborate why so many have had issues with that brand?
What is your opinion of Malarky Vista Shingles. Are they also SBS Modified Asphalt - class 4 shingles? Your videos are extremely useful. Thanks for all the info.
the vista is class 4 and looks like a super well made shingle..ultra flexible, granules deeply adhered and tough.. they arent suited to really hot areas though sadly.
I agree with on the Malarkey Legacy. Your kinda harsh and unfair with OC. The Oakridge sucks but I use OC Duration 80% of the time and if they want class 4 I use the OC FLEX . We don’t get the Storm in Alberta. You can’t beat the sure nail strip on the Duration and FLEX. And they super seal. We never get blow offs.
I was about to sign a contract with a roofer here in NJ who is offering Owing Duration Watching this video I was about to change my mind. But after reading your comment I don’t know what to do! 🤦🏻♂️ Any thoughts?
You would be very happy with the Duration. I don’t recommend the Oakridge. If you’re looking for class 4 I recommend Malarkey Legacy or Owens Corning FLEX. The OC ‘s seal better if your in a high wind area.
I'm also in a state of confusion, and live in a high wind area (florida). I am being offered OC, Duration, or from a different contractor the Landmark. My current roof has had many shingles blow off and suffer wind damage.
I have a question for you. I live in an area that is very common for it to get hail. I’m about to get my roof replaced due to hail damage and my roofer suggested originally to get Certainteed Landmark ClimateFlex. After doing some research I learned about Northgate shingles. Additionally, I’m about to get solar on my roof so I don’t want to have to take them down in the future to replace the roof due to hail damage to the roof if getting the Northgate shingles would hold up significantly better to hail in the long term. Which would you go with? Is there a big difference in price? Is the price difference worth it in your opinion? Thank you.
Seal strips do a lot of good when the grits fall off the shingles. That has been my experience with almost all the latest versions of shingles from brands that are not Polymer Modified.
I have found that Sure nail shingles are much easier to repair because you can get them apart. The Oakridge at after several years is nearly impossible to get apart, until the glue ages to 15 years or so. You can grab the Sure Nail strip and pull and zip the shingle right apart. Totally took my faith in it’s holding power away after I did a few repairs. The edges of them are crumbly, and break/roll easily, even when using soft soled shoes, in comparison to higher quality shingles. The difference when leaf blowing off a new roof is HUGE. We used to seal the last nail in the vent, then use a cap, bent it in half, rubbed it together to get grits to cover the sealant. One cap did several nails. With MALARKEY you use several caps, and still have issues covering one nail. It is day and night difference. So much so that I am refusing to install shingles that are not Polymer Modified.
we are building a new house and we are using brownstone board & batten, siding and martgaux beige stone veneer. should we use charcoal shingle or canadian driftwood shingles for our roof
Good info. I'm about to have two roofs shingled with the Landmark Pro shingles. What temperature is required for them to seal and should I wait for warmer weather before the install?
@@homesteadroofing Thanks for the reply. Perfect timing! One of the roofs will be done end of this week, supposed to be in the high 50's / low 60's for that timeframe.
I am currently dealing with Tamko's warranty 0/10 do not recommend!! Delamination out of the pack and roofer didn't catch it. Reported issue at the end of November, it is now the middle of February and just now getting an approval. They kept asking about hail and nailing schedule, as if that was the cause!
I live in New England, and it's probably time for a new roof. Please rank these 4 shingles from best to worse. Owens corning duration, GAF timberline hdz, certainteed landmark, certainteed landmark pro. Thank you!
Who/what did you go with ? I live in RI. I was thinking of going with a contractor that uses Landmark Pro shingles with diamondeck underlayment. The Pro shingles are thicker, heavier and stronger I read
What shingles would be better for the Pacific NW. We are looking for shingles that don't loose granules and for the longevity. We were offered Pabco Premier, Certainteed Northgate, Certainteed Landmark AR, Certainteed Presidential TL, Malarkey Presidential.
All of those are very different. Presidential is a luxury shingle and quite a step up from Landmark. Northgate is an impact resistant shingle which you probably don't need where you live. There is no such thing as Malarkey Presidential. Presidential is a CertainTeed product.
Can you recommend some shingles that work well for the Pacific NW climate that wont loose much granules and are know for their longevity @@homesteadroofing
We had our entire roof replaced in 2012. I don't know what shingles they used, other than they told us they were 30yr shingles. Well, last year, we noticed some small leaks around our bathroom fan/vents on the ceiling. And last week we had really high winds here and noticed several shingles were blown up/off. This roof is just under 12yrs old. I feel like we were taken. We live in south texas with extremely hot summers.
30 years is how long the manufacturer's warranty is against product defect. It's not an indication of how long the shingles will last, especially if they're not installed correctly.
If you live in a hail area, I don't like metal. Yes, it's tougher than most shingles, but if you get big hail, it will still get dented. Many insurance companies are writing exclusions into their policies so they don't have to cover "cosmetic" damage to metal roofs, but that could leave you with a roof that looks like the moon surface. Check out this video here - th-cam.com/video/H11l3D4XfUE/w-d-xo.html
I have a roofer that uses CertainTeed Landmark shingles and is using black felt paper for underlayment. Is that ok? I am concerned that he should be using CertainTeed Synthetic underlayment paper.
@@homesteadroofing Though I myself am yet to form an opinion either way, and though tarpaper is not as safe to walk on, and needs the shingles installed before a rain causes tar-paper-warpage which is reportedly prone to show through to the installed shingles over-time, I've read that some installers / homeowners prefer tarpaper underlayment over synthetic as it can add to the life of the shingles by donating shingle tar supporting chemicals to the underside of the shingles over time... Very interested to hear others' thoughts on any aspect of this... Thanks much for the super informative videos - learning alot for my upcoming re-roof...!!
Why would you specifically pick the CertainTeed Northgate climate-flex vs the Malarky Legacy Scotchguard? Torn between the 2 and have a great premium installer lined up that will give me 25 years of labor warranty. I really just want the longest lasting product without having to go to a metal roof; I am geographically located in the Pacific Northwest with lots of rain and not much hail but some wind.
I have a lot of experience with Northgate and have it on my own house. I really like working with CertainTeed as a company and the local rep I had for years gave me great service. I have limited experience with Malarkey, only having addressed 2-3 of their warranty claims. I know it's a very good shingle though, but it's been harder to get here in my area over the last year or so.
I live in Ga and am surrounded by tall trees and have a black algae problem that I was told starts to happen when the copper in the shingles wears out or goes away. My shingles last about 5 years then the black starts. So. What is the best shingle that has the most copper? I know I can also install copper strips while the shingles are being installed. I also am thinking about the metal Erie type shingles that are suppose to last 50 years and I don't have to worry about what I put on them to kill any black algae.
I just am not a big fan of the OC products. After over 8 years of using Certainteed almost exclusively, I'm just really impressed with their products. I have also heard really good things about Atlas but haven't had an opportunity to use them
We live in the Pacific Northwest where it drizzles six months out of the year, but hail (usually small ice pellets) and wind storms do not happen that often. The first re-roofing bid we got would use Corning Duration shingles, but what shingles would you recommend for our neck of the woods?
That's a really good question. Your climate is so much different than it is here. I recommend you ask a few roofers and maybe even one of the roofing supply companies like ABC or Beacon.
I am going to be getting a Certainteed Landmark Climate Flex Class 4 shingle for my home in Texas. One question I do have. What is the difference between the Landmark Climate Flex and the Northgate Climate Flex? The warranties are slightly different but both are class 4.
To the best of my knowledge, the main difference is the weight of the shingle. I believe the Northgate is heavier (4 bundles per square). That would be my go-to choice every time. I have never offered the Landmark CF because the Northgate is a much better shingle.
I just checked Certainteed’s website. It is not available in Texas. The only SBS modified shingle available here from Certainteed is the Lamdmark Climate Flex. I am still going to get it, just wished Certainteed offered it down here.
I understand shingles can be rated class 1-4. While so, it seems many shingles have no rating. How should I interpret this? Would that imply they are less than a class 1 hail rating?
So does this mean a class 1 rated shingle is more impact resistant than a non rated shingle? Or perhaps the non rated shingle does have some impact resistance but it just hasn’t been tested?
We're trying to get Melarky put on a house near Atlanta, Georgia, and they need a distributor here. We called Melarky, and they said it was too expensive to ship it there, which is odd because they use them in Alaska. Is the Certainty North Gate available in the Atlanta area? Is there a gentleman's agreement that they don't cross each other's territory? I have the same problem in Tallahassee. Would installing an ice and water barrier help an asphalt shingle against hail?
That's a really good question. You could ask a roofer or one of the supply companies like ABC or Beacon. Adding IWS to the roof won't help protect the shingle from hail damage. Do you get hail in Atlanta?
What about the Tamko Titan XL? I do have hail and high wind at times. We do get tornados around here too. Anyway this shingle is what a contractor was wanting me to go for. He said it was $4 a box cheaper than the brand on the house now. I dont know what brand I have now. Its not a forever type home but if I Am living in it longer than I expected I want want the roof to be good. Also, i hear tamkondoesnt seal good, is this true?
The 245-255 is most likely the weight of the shingle that they want installed on your roof. That's pounds per square of shingles. A square is 100 square feet. Hope that helps.
Hmmm... the internet also thinks men can have babies... My opinion is that it would depend on where you live. If you live in an area that gets a lot of severe hail, I actually don't like that option unless it's a good, thick steel. If it's aluminum - no way!
My brother I live in the People’s Republic of Washington so “men” be havin’ isn’t just on the internet it’s a campaign platform. That aside I’m looking at a move to Boise, I’ve not looked into hail issue there but that’ll be added to the criteria. I tend to over build so will probably end up with the polymer modified Malarkey product. The metallic roofing industry evidently recently figured out how to make their product look like regular shingles and has been creaming their drawers about it with advertisements everywhere I look. Keep up the good work.
Ok not to sound stupid...just learning. What are the classes of shingles? I'm needing complete new roof. I have no wind blockage..in Kansas out in bfe.
Good question. Some shingles are class A rated. This is for fire typically. Some shingles are class 4 rated. This is for impact resistance. There's also class 1-3, but I've never seen class 1 or 2 in my area. Only 3 and 4.
@@homesteadroofing no sir I'm in Rogers Arkansas, any advice is greatly appreciated as I don't want to be blind sided and make the wrong choices for roofing. High wind area rains a lot and it gets freezing cold here as well as hot summers
New subscriber. Builder put Atlas Chalet Shingles on our home. 12 years later some hail damage. I did some research...a lot of research. I was pretty much the last homeowner to replace my roof because roofers went through my community like locusts promising me the world. As I said, my roof exhibited some hail damage even though we had no leaks. I settled on a respected roofer and the roof was approved by my insurance company. 42 years with no claims other than a cracked windshield and a tow. The approval was immediate....ya think? Haha. I decided on Landmark Pro Shingles Charcoal, and every upgrade as far as accessories. My neighbors went with OC, and GAF. One had three tabs installed, but I kept my thoughts to myself. From what I gleaned on your fine website, and others, my roof was installed over two days, and I think by the book. It wasn't cheap, but feel we made the right choice. Our roof is beautiful. I now find myself looking at roofs all of the time. Atlanta, GA. Thanks for your sage advice on roofing.
Two roofing companies I am looking into one wants to use Atlas Pinnacle Architectural shingles, another mentions GAF natural shadow upto lifetime architectural shingles, and another says IKO Dynasty shingles
I have been in roofing for the last 20 years. GAF Timberline HDZ shingles since they came out and that is the bottom line when it comes to what I would install. Not sure what this guy has against GAF but there is a reason they are the #1 best selling shingle line. I put roofs on next to Certainteed, Owens Corning and Atlas all the time and the GAF by far looks the best. With an infinite wind warranty it speaks for itself. Not much price between Natural Shadow and HDZ but the HDZ looks so much better.
If you would like to know the roofer in Houston we recommend, send an Email to info@homesteadroofingcolorado.com and we'll give you their contact info.
I live near San Jose, Ca. We need to replace a redwood shingle roof on our 2300sq. ft. + 2 car garage single story home. Asphalt shingles have now become the preferred roof in my neighborhood. I could use some advice about what grade of shingle that would be most practical from a dependability and cost standpoint for our climate. Temps rarely get to freezing or up in the 90s. They mostly range from 40s to 80s. Winds can gust up to 30-40 mph (rare event). We can get a lot of rain in late winter and early spring but rarely a drop the rest of year. Hail is rare but not unheard of. My husband & I are retired and in our 70s & 80s so I expect that this will be our last roof replacement.
The difference in cost of the Landmark vs. Landmark Pro is $20 a square. The pro looks better in my opinion, but you may not think so. We’re re-roofing soon, and I think we’ll go with the Landmark Pro for $180 a square. Hope your roof turned out great!
Liked and subscribed. What is your opinion about the Malarkey Highlander shingle, in an area that doesn't suffer from large hail (but we do have a fair amount of wind)? My understanding is that SBS shingles have only been around 38 years, do they have as long of a lifespan as other asphalt architectural shingles? Thanks.
I believe Malarkey was the leader and innovator in the SBS market. We recently re-roofed a house that had Malarkey Legacy. The roof was over 20 years old. It still had a lot of life in it, but the insurance company wanted the homeowner to replace it.
Hello I live in Florida full sun roof. I thinking about a sbs peal stick base vs 30lb felt and a sbs shingle. We seem to never get hail. Does that sound like I am on the right course? Or do you think a different shingle. Thank you for the advice.
I think you should talk to a Florida-based roofer. If you are in the Orlando area, contact Certified Best Roofing at 407-602-3363 and let them know you found out about them here.
Shingle companies dont warranty for hail anyway, its covered under insurance. Malarky is 2nd to last for top shingles on google. Oc is top 3rd. Certainteed is 4th.
No comments on GAF? Mississippi heat and gulf storms are an issue here. My current options are OC and GAF. Everyone here dishes on Certainteed and Tamko. Never heard of Malarkey, but the name wasn’t necessarily a bright marketing idea. 😉
It sounds as if the SBF modified shingles are impact-resistant shingles without being classified as such. True? For example, the Certaintneed shingle. It is SBF modified, but is it classified as impact resistant? I'm asking because some insurance companies give premium discounts to the homeowner if they use impact resistant shingles.
A real benefit would be to disclose the relative cost of the shingles you reviewed. In several cases it appears that you are comparing apples and bananas.
Great video! I’m in Central Florida and I’ve found after hurricanes, Landmark shingles hold up great to wind, BUT, every call we received after our last storm for blown off shingles, were Landmark Shadow Ridge… My least favorite list is 1)GAF, 2)GAF, and 3) is a tie between GAF and O/C. Favorite is still Atlas Pinnacle Pristine.
@@80Demitri even with the issue with the hip and ridge, not holding up to higher wins, I personally would put Certainteed landmark ahead of GAF timberline HDZ,
Atlas roofs are garbage...our 5 year old home was already getting black streaking and we had a hail storm/wind storm and roof was destroyed. Neighbor across the street has GAF Ultra and it did not touch their roof@@homesteadroofing
Not only are the Malarkey line of Shingles SBS, they use a 5 part polymer instead of three, making it flexible for more of the shingle’s life. I recently started using the VISTA AR and because MALARKEY has been set up with an entire line of these shingles for so long, they are much more cost effective then Northgate, as in around $50.00 per sq less, and I only pay $23.00 per sq more then, Durations or Timberline HDZ, so about $600.00 on an average sized roof. The wide wedge shim is awesome for installing. I am going exclusively with Polymer Modified, and I have been so effective that I don’t need the jobs that they don’t want to spend the extra money.
You can't really compare the Vista and Northgate. The Vista is a lower-grade shingle. I get the Legacy and Northgates for the same price. Plus, right when that video released I was involved in my 2nd warranty claim with Malarkey. Neither of them have worked out for the homeowner. Not very impressed with the Malarkey warranty.
@@homesteadroofing Did you every try out the warranty match with MALARKEY? The Vista is Basically a slightly thinner version of the Legacy, but as of January 1 2023 has been upgraded to a class 4 impact rating. That rating is backed up by matching the Northgate in IBHS testing, as well as being one of only 3 to pass the extended testing with Legacy being another one.
Good question. I don't work with GAF shingles at all so I'm not completely sure, but I think this is a step up from their basic shingle. Another roofer may comment about it here.
Certainteed shingles use ceramic granules which retain a truer color over the years. All shingles will fade over time but cheaper shingles go from black to grey over the years.
I just started looking into shingles to replace a concrete tile roof in southern California. I'm totally confused! Any suggestions would be welcome. don't want cheap stuff, but middle tier would be fine. Great video, thanks!

@@homesteadroofing I am currently looking at a new roof, and in getting quotes found out that in LA County now our roofs have to meet the "prescriptive cool roof requirements" in California, Title 24 (Part 6), and also meet or exceed 20 SRI which is the minimum requirement for the Green Building Standards Code of Los Angeles County. So the only materials that seem to comply are either the Owens Corning Cool Roof shingles or the Malarkey Ecoasis SBS Modified Cool Roof. Thoughts?
Tamko Heritage is crap! Our roof is 4 1/2 years old and what he says about the delamination is exactly what happened to ours. We find many granules that come out of our downspouts every time.
The Landmark is not SBS, although they did recently release an SBS version called Landmark ClimateFlex. I actually believe that most shingles are equivalent (Tamko excepted - they're not good). I really like CertainTeed as a company. I believe they stand behind their contractors, products, and the homeowners and the other companies don't do that as well.
Certainteed shingles can shed granules at an alarming rate.. beware... I have a friend with them on her roof and in 13yrs, many of the shingles lost almost All their granules...

No , the issue was not repaired under warranty...Reason was , there was a hail storm ,which damaged the roof and it was fully replaced under the homeowners insurance...She had no idea her roof had lost the granules in alot of areas but when it was inspected for the hail damage, it was mentioned and pics shown her of the damages which were hail impacts and granule loss.. her roof was only 13yrs old.. no idea how certainteed would have handled the warranty, her home insurance fronted the bill.
@@homesteadroofing Ive heard responses like urs brother and I dont doubt ur honesty at all.. the only thing I could guess is that there Are bad batches from time to time, and the issues that befall some people are legit ones but may happen for that reason... aside from granule loss, Ive been discouraged from using them by other roofers who mentioned issues with them blowing off under the wind and reason for it being they didnt adhere down properly and develop a secure bond... again, there is no reason why the roofer who told me this would lie, it was not to his advantage as he was a certified certainteed installer and was Loosing me as a customer by sharing this...
I haven't heard of a shingle color: Midnight Plum. I had to look that up. I see that it's OC's color of the year. It's definitely not one I would ever recommend. I'd stick with Estate Gray. My guess is that eventually the Plum will be discontinued, then if you ever have to do a repair, you won't be able to get the shingle. The oddball colors don't tend to stick around for long.
Hi there, nice video. I live in northern VA. We get all 4 seasons, I guess not overly extreme weather. Snow yes but not several feet, but single digit temps sometimes. Hot summers but not like Texas. But humidity yes. Some wind and storms but not like further down south. I don’t even know if I can get Malarky in my area. I will look into CertainTeed landmark pro. I have landmark now but it’s old. A roofer recently recommended GAF but after seeing review videos it doesn’t sound good. They said their company was GAF master elite and can offer golden pledge warranty but I’m not sure if that’s just hype.
I have the same misgivings as far as GAF.. in process of getting a roofer and shingle choice...GAF Seems to have a pretty wild warranty that tops most others out there... in order to get it, it Must be installed by a GAF certified "master elite" installer and a number of Other Gaf components like underlayment, venting ect need to be used to achieve that warranty.. But warranty aside, the physical shingle in hand felt so poorly made, brittle, fragile, that I serious question whether i wanted it on my house... if we Did go with GAF, it would Only be for the warranty as the shingle looked truly awful in construction.
That's a difficult one because the climate where I live is so radically different. Here it's normally very dry and cool Colorado Springs is over 6000' elevation. I would ask your roofer to give you references to other homeowners who have had Landmark installed and ask them and the roofers how the product performs.
@@homesteadroofing i will NOT use GAF after my research..to many issues with QC.....my certainteed architectural shingles were installed in 1989 and they just started hairline cracking after 34 years!! It was really a 3 tab shingle with different layers for depth...color was prairie wood....great install over an existing shingle...do they ever make anything anymore of that quality??? I doubt it!!
I just had duration shingles put on my roof, thank you for the affirmation.
Owen’s is a good shingle he just wants people to pay more. So he can say they installed the best product for the price.
GAF Elk on our house giving up the ghost but they were installed in 1999... one can hardly complain
We don't get much hail here in SW, Florida. I got a Owen's Corning Duration shingle roof about 13 years ago. After two hurricanes, including a direct hit by Hurricane Ian, not a single shingle was damaged or blown off.
You will find videos on TH-cam criticizing every brand of shingle known to man.
Thank you. I too am in SWFL, and am finally getting a roof after Ian. The Owen’s Corning is the one I’m considering.
Yeah not true, just cause you can't see it from the road doesn't mean its not there
I have gotten 6 estimates and none of them have taught me anything about shingles much less do they show us samples.
That's a bummer. Make that a requirement of the roofers you interview.
@@homesteadroofing I’m telling you we have real losers in my area who are a detriment to your profession.
Great information Liz. Thanks for that.
OC Oakridge not a problem with wind in WI.
sealing issues and granule loss are what Ive heard about with these... if they arent sealing soon after install, you Better get them addressed as the longer you wait the less likely they will Ever seal right as dirt and debris get under the sealing surface and make the seal weak or impossible over time
Never will seal.
Tamko USED to make a great product. Be wary going with it now.
I’ve never seen Duration Storm not look like a leopard after a good hail storm. I agree with you on that.
Thoughts on GAF timberline UHDZ?
I had GAF timberline shingles on my house and I got 28 years out of them. Very good shingle.
had roof done 2022 WARNING they are super thin now adays they admit they make to only last 12 tears
You still like the oakridge?
Do you still like the oakridge?
My Owen's Corning roof was installed in 2016 and stood up through Harvey, Ida, and Dorian!
Hi there. we had a massive Hail Storm in the State of SC recently I am researching brands and class before I pick a Roofing company in regards to what they use.may I ask what type of OC class or grade are your shingles ..Thankyou I am trying to pick a quality and affordable type thanks

That's a good question. I don't really know. I've been using CertainTeed now for almost 10 years and haven't had any bad experiences with it.
I agree with you on Malarkey Legacy in a hail market. I’ve never seen it in Florida.
What about the certainteed Saint-Gobain
Saint-Gobain is the parent company for CertainTeed
What is your opinion of Malarky Vista Shingles. Are they also SBS Modified Asphalt - class 4 shingles? Your videos are extremely useful. Thanks for all the info.
Yes, Malarkey makes a good shingle, but we've seen warranty issues with them a few times recently.
the vista is class 4 and looks like a super well made shingle..ultra flexible, granules deeply adhered and tough.. they arent suited to really hot areas though sadly.
@@skip741x3 could you elaborate more on the Hot area? what is going to happen to the Vista in summer? I'm from DFW Texas. Thanks.
Can you make a video to compare asphalt shingles to fiberglass shingles? I have been requesting estimates but I am still lost!
Dimensional asphalt shingles have a fiberglass mat in them.
Those are 2 ingredients in the same product.
I was about to sign a contract with a roofer here in NJ who is offering Owing Duration
Watching this video I was about to change my mind. But after reading your comment I don’t know what to do! 🤦🏻♂️
Any thoughts?
You would be very happy with the Duration. I don’t recommend the Oakridge. If you’re looking for class 4 I recommend Malarkey Legacy or Owens Corning FLEX. The OC ‘s seal better if your in a high wind area.
Thank you so much.
So I have one contractor that I like offering me the Owings duration and one that is offering GAF timberline HDZ.
Thoughts?
I’d go with Duration.
I'm also in a state of confusion, and live in a high wind area (florida). I am being offered OC, Duration, or from a different contractor the Landmark. My current roof has had many shingles blow off and suffer wind damage.
I like the Malarkey Vista for the value
I have a question for you. I live in an area that is very common for it to get hail. I’m about to get my roof replaced due to hail damage and my roofer suggested originally to get Certainteed Landmark ClimateFlex. After doing some research I learned about Northgate shingles. Additionally, I’m about to get solar on my roof so I don’t want to have to take them down in the future to replace the roof due to hail damage to the roof if getting the Northgate shingles would hold up significantly better to hail in the long term. Which would you go with? Is there a big difference in price? Is the price difference worth it in your opinion? Thank you.
IMO, nothing seals like OC surenail...that fabric strip does magic. I won’t go on anymore about OC😂
I’ll see if Project Farm can test shingles 👍🏼
Seal strips do a lot of good when the grits fall off the shingles. That has been my experience with almost all the latest versions of shingles from brands that are not Polymer Modified.
@@renurenovationsllc7780 well, we don’t get hail much here, and I’ve yet to hear from any homeowner with a complaint about the OC Surenail
@@renurenovationsllc7780 sealing well surely helps WIND ISSUES🤣
I have them on my house and just got them on my garage today.
How does North Gate high Temps? Like Oklahoma that can get down to -14° or high of 116°!!! And winds!!! What about Timberline? TY!!! 😊
It handles those temps fine, as long as you're not trying to install it in those extremes.
we are building a new house and we are using brownstone board & batten, siding and martgaux beige stone veneer. should we use charcoal shingle or canadian driftwood shingles for our roof
Good info. I'm about to have two roofs shingled with the Landmark Pro shingles. What temperature is required for them to seal and should I wait for warmer weather before the install?
We like to have a sunny day of 50 degrees or warmer, with that same weather for a couple days after the project.
@@homesteadroofing Thanks for the reply. Perfect timing! One of the roofs will be done end of this week, supposed to be in the high 50's / low 60's for that timeframe.

Delamination out of the pack and roofer didn't catch it. Reported issue at the end of November, it is now the middle of February and just now getting an approval. They kept asking about hail and nailing schedule, as if that was the cause!
Yep... I don't like Tamko.
I live in New England, and it's probably time for a new roof. Please rank these 4 shingles from best to worse. Owens corning duration, GAF timberline hdz, certainteed landmark, certainteed landmark pro. Thank you!

Then GAF
Last - OC

What do you think of metal (shingles looking) roofing system instead of shingles? I heard great things about it.
Shingles were once promoted by weight 325 lbs per square
One roofer we got a bid from said they used plastic roof nails? Maybe I misunderstood, but I’ve never heard of that before!
I doubt that's the nails that fasten the shingles. There are plastic cap nails that hold down the underlayment. These are very common.
I have a roofer that uses CertainTeed Landmark shingles and is using black felt paper for underlayment. Is that ok? I am concerned that he should be using CertainTeed Synthetic underlayment paper.
That's pretty surprising since the synthetic is about the same price now. Not sure why he would have done that, but it should be OK>
What about GAF HDZ?
Thanks for the insight lots of Hale in my area.
What size nail would you use for winter climate with ice guard and thick Owen corning duration?
You can still use a 1 1/4" nail, but a ring shank will hold better.
Certainneed ridge caps suck! I have a 10 year old roof in Florida and ever high wind I pick up ridge caps.
That's a bummer
What about the Owens Corning Tru Definition Duration shingle. I live in Fort Wayne, IN. North East part of the state.
Great video! I live in Seattle, what month of the year would you avoid install new roof? thanks
The 10 months that it rains! 😂
I've been there in April, May, and July. Those seem like good months.
I don’t think Northgate is available down here. 😢
Shingles with no impact rating are not impact resistant
❤ The BEST roofing material is concrete tiles. They're heavier, but they last for 100 + years.
I definitely don't like concrete tiles. Around here they won't last that long. After about 5 years, they'll be cracking and getting brittle.
I will never install Tamko products.
Hi there, can you explain what the numbers mean from our requirements with our HOA. Ex: Owens Corning Duration Premium (245-255)? Thanks
The 245-255 is most likely the weight of the shingle that they want installed on your roof. That's pounds per square of shingles. A square is 100 square feet. Hope that helps.
Nice ad for certainteed
The internet wants me to use some kind of new metal shingle that’s meant to replace the look of standard asphalt shingles. Any thoughts?
Hmmm... the internet also thinks men can have babies...
What is your experience or thoughts about the Tamko Titan XT shingle?
I don't use any Tamko products
Just got hit with hail damage and a tornado here in Northwest Arkansas last week, having ro replace the roof as a first time home owner any advice?
Are you in the Little Rock area? If so, contact Joel Johnson at P.I. Roofing. Website - www.piroofing.com/
That's awesome news! I'm really glad that you love your new roof. Thank you for sharing.
Atlas Chalet had a recall and legal issues.
Atlas Chalet = CT Horizon
I use gaf timberline HD ultra
One thing that would help would be knowing if the roofs were hand nailed or air gun nailed. Hand nailed will far out live air nailed 9 out of 10 times
Good info. Thanks, What do you think of Cool Shingles ?, Heat is becoming a major problem.
I think it's a money-grab scam. Just my opinion.
Basic physics matter. Cosider a lighter color.
Two roofing companies I am looking into one wants to use Atlas Pinnacle Architectural shingles, another mentions GAF natural shadow upto lifetime architectural shingles, and another says IKO Dynasty shingles
Atlas
I have been in roofing for the last 20 years. GAF Timberline HDZ shingles since they came out and that is the bottom line when it comes to what I would install. Not sure what this guy has against GAF but there is a reason they are the #1 best selling shingle line. I put roofs on next to Certainteed, Owens Corning and Atlas all the time and the GAF by far looks the best. With an infinite wind warranty it speaks for itself. Not much price between Natural Shadow and HDZ but the HDZ looks so much better.
@@homesteadroofing what line do you install for your company?
I live in the Houston Tx area! I’m researching roofing and I’d like to know what you’d recommend for roofing!
If that were my house I would probably install CertainTeed Landmark. There doesn't seem to be any reason for you to pay for an upgraded shingle.
@@homesteadroofing Thank you.
How about the Atlas pinnacle?
I've heard good things about it but don't have experience with it.
My take away from this is that his competitors sell OC and we know what shingles he sells.
I actually used to use primarily OC and had so many problems, I chose a better company.
No comments on GAF? Mississippi heat and gulf storms are an issue here. My current options are OC and GAF. Everyone here dishes on Certainteed and Tamko. Never heard of Malarkey, but the name wasn’t necessarily a bright marketing idea. 😉
I was only intending on talking about 3 I would, and 3 I would not put on my house.
I am in South Florida with no hale. Is the Owens Corning Duration still a no go?
I just don't like OC products.
If a shingle is impact resistant, it will always have a rating, usually Class 3 or 4.
A real benefit would be to disclose the relative cost of the shingles you reviewed. In several cases it appears that you are comparing apples and bananas.
The point of the video was not to compare shingles.
The point was to provide my opinion on which shingles I would and would not want on my own house.
Great video!
I’m in Central Florida and I’ve found after hurricanes, Landmark shingles hold up great to wind, BUT, every call we received after our last storm for blown off shingles, were Landmark Shadow Ridge…
My least favorite list is 1)GAF, 2)GAF, and 3) is a tie between GAF and O/C.
Favorite is still Atlas Pinnacle Pristine.
I've heard good things about Atlas.
How do GAF Timberline HDZ compare to the Landmarks?
@@80Demitri even with the issue with the hip and ridge, not holding up to higher wins, I personally would put Certainteed landmark ahead of GAF timberline HDZ,
@@derrickvittitow9930 Thank you very much!
Atlas roofs are garbage...our 5 year old home was already getting black streaking and we had a hail storm/wind storm and roof was destroyed. Neighbor across the street has GAF Ultra and it did not touch their roof@@homesteadroofing
What is your opinion of or experience with F-WAVE REVIA Synthetic Roofing Shingles?
We don't recommend F-Wave
What about Timberland/
Thanks for the useful content. What do you think about GAF shingles?
Not a fan
@@homesteadroofing How about OC Duration or Certainteed Landmark Pro? Thanks.
Really appreciate your video. I'm going to install your recommendation
I love the new Tamko Pro line ! I have TitanXT on my roof but I live by strong winds, not much hail.
Definitely not a fan of Tamko
@@homesteadroofing I agree when it comes to Heritage….. but TitanXT is definitely awesome
Is there any OC product that you would recommend?
I don't know anything about the Flex, but regarding the others, no I wouldn't recommend them.
@@renurenovationsllc7780 I'm not sure what you mean by “warranty match.”
When you register a MALARKEY warranty you can choose their warranty or a choose a competitors, on a similar shingle and they will match the terms.
Impact rated with a homeowner insurance discount
Is gaf timberland uhdz a builder grade shingle?
Good question. I don't work with GAF shingles at all so I'm not completely sure, but I think this is a step up from their basic shingle. Another roofer may comment about it here.
Do the darker colors of Landmark shingles fade much over time or do they retain most of their color?
That depends on the environment. Even here in Colorado with the harsh sun and dry climate, they don't seem to fade that much.
Consider Brava or CertainTeed Northgate. Brava is a synthetic and is indestructible.
@@homesteadroofing Thanks for the reply and the info. I like CertainTeed, but the color I want isn't available anymore.....Slate Gray. I'll check out Northgate and Brava.
Thoughts?
CertainTeed makes a Solaris shingle that complies with Title 24. We’ve been researching in SoCal for a re-roof.
What about the Owens Corning Duration?
Not a fan
What about malarkey SBS for hail like golf ball hail or dime size hail we get in Saskatchewan Canada?
👍
Tamko Heritage is crap! Our roof is 4 1/2 years old and what he says about the delamination is exactly what happened to ours. We find many granules that come out of our downspouts every time.
so is the certainteed landmark SBS modified...please explain why you like the landmark so much..T Y
Do the Landmark Pro’s have a greater depth look to them than Landmark?
Certainteed shingles can shed granules at an alarming rate.. beware... I have a friend with them on her roof and in 13yrs, many of the shingles lost almost All their granules...
I've been installing CertainTeed for years and have not seen this happen. I have had them on my own roof for a long time with no problems.
Did Certainteed stand by it's shingle warranty and replace it??
Does cert have a 50 yr warranty. I'm in between a cert landmark or a ecmr aluminum shingles for 3.5xs the cost I can't find value...
@@BNM-b7t sorry for the delay in response, I dont always recheck my posts to see comments...
Midnight Plum VS. Estate Gray? house already has estate Gray....here in Southwest Texas, hot area....and it hails alot here...
@@homesteadroofing oh ok..thanks...I didnt even think of that .I really do like the estate gray..I've redone it the same color 2wice already
I’m so glad you like the Certainteed landmark shingles. I just spent a boatload of money on my roof and I put the Landmark Pro shingles on my house.
Is GAF oyster grey having a lot of issues
I don't know. I don't work with GAF at all.
Thank you for your time and effort.
I am in SF Bay Area, where can I get the ones you prefer ?
Pretty much any roofer you choose should have access to these shingles.
What do u think of Certainteed Landmark for So Florida?
That's a difficult one because the climate where I live is so radically different. Here it's normally very dry and cool Colorado Springs is over 6000' elevation. I would ask your roofer to give you references to other homeowners who have had Landmark installed and ask them and the roofers how the product performs.
Great Info Sir - I have hail damaged copper penny (29gauge) Love it but would you recommend a better copper penny metal product ?
Is it exposed fastener or standing seam?
By the way, I am in New Orleans, Louisiana and plan to install a new roof. Any suggestions, will be deeply appreciated.
Why have you not mentioned GAF Timberline HDZ?? Please comment about your experience with it T Y
Because it's not one of the 3 that I *would* put on my house and I limited the number of ones I *would not* put on my house to 3 for this video.
@@homesteadroofing i will NOT use GAF after my research..to many issues with QC.....my certainteed architectural shingles were installed in 1989 and they just started hairline cracking after 34 years!!
