If you can afford an external monitor, get the 14 inches maxed out. You get a much better portability and no performance loss. Fan noise is not bad and is never annoying like it used too… it is the BEST INVESTMENT I ever made … gear wise. :)
i would have to say that i have fallen in love with my pc. i have a buypower desktop with the msi GEFORCE RTX. built for gaming but serves me very well for videos and never bogs down on me. But if it ever does, i think i would have to go with the 14 inch because I know for sure it would fit in my camera bag.
Unless you’re a student or travel every day (and thus need to carry it around with you all the time), get the 16”. You spend so much more time looking at your screen than carrying it around, as someone pointed out below, and the screen real estate makes a huge difference. Now if you need to carry it around every single day several times, such as during a long crowded commute or running between classes, then get the 14”.
Something not pointed out here is that the 14" will sometimes (under heavy loads) thermal throttle after a few minutes and the 16" will absolutely plow through everything at the absolute max performance for as long as you need it to. The air flow is better in the 16", bigger fans too...
Larger screen, better speaker, cooler all the time, the weight and size in the backpack is the only disadvantage for the 16¨. So, the answer always be the 16¨
I've had the 14" for almost a week now and I've been editing on Davinci Resolve Studio and I am so shocked at this laptop. I've been a Windows and Samsung guy for about a decade now but the latest iPhone 13, Apple Watch and MacBooks made me switch. I honestly can't even fathom how Apple put this much power, efficiency and battery life in such a small form factor. I'm not even joking, I literally cannot understand how. All of that without ever heating up, throttling (while on battery mind you) or kicking fans on. I can easily edit a 10-15 minute 4k vlog on this without even being plugged in. Just set the laptop on my lap while I'm in bed and go to town. I still have my desktop because I also like to game and there are way more options on Windows for that, but I haven't touched my PC in the week I've had my Macbook lol. Hats off to Apple and hats off to YOU Matti, how you edit with trackpad will forever be a mystery to me 😂.
@Step bro I was on the S10+ before I got the 13 mini. There's still soooooo much that I miss about my Samsungs and just Android in general, but it's just little stuff really. No type-c isn't a deal breaker for me since I rarely used it anyways, I always use wireless charging (and now magsafe for everything). One thing that annoys me about the Macbooks though is, sure, they have a lot of ports again, but WHYYYYYYY did they not at least put ONE type-a port 😭😭😭😭😭.

For travelling the 16” has two significant advantages. Better battery life and more screen real estate when you’re not at your desk. Travel doesn’t all go to the 14”!
Already have the 16in. Literally stood in front of these laptops for 2 hours on black friday and couldnt pull the trigger until I went back and stared at them for another hour a week later!
Thank for review! I'm a software developer and like to travel but for my work I prefer larger screen. I think it's better to have just one laptop were all your work and travel with it. Most of my time I work on laptop without additional monitor because I switch locations. Extra 2'' inches gives me more comfortable work experience and it worth it because I spend much more time working comparing to carring it.
Late, but I use 34 inch monitor with a macbook 14 base model. Not even external peripherals, just monitor on an arm and laptop centered below it. Works great, especially if you need to switch between 3 laptops as I do (my mac, work mac, gaming asus)
The other thing worth noting is that the 16" M1 Pro is going to offer the absolute best battery life. So if you don't need Max performance (and most of us honestly don't), that could be a good consideration
@@MrFL08 I’m usually this way but I think after seeing how good the M1 Pro is and knowing I’ll keep upgrading every 2 years I may optimize for battery this time
@The Beast my specs: 14” M1 Max 10 core CPU, 24 core GPU, 16 core Neural Engine 32 GB RAM 512 SSD $2899 USD Wish I had gotten the 1 TB SSD instead but I’m making due with my Synology NAS
@@LittleMountainLife this is the same spec I am considering right now (with 1T ssd). Do you use Adobe software? Especially After Effects. How’s the thermal doing? Do you experience thermal throttling under sustain load?
@@LittleMountainLife cool! I am definitely switching to Apple software with the new Mac. But I can see myself using Adobe from time to time for collaboration with Adobe users. Thanks for the reply!
If you do all your editing on your MBP I recommend the 16”. I’ve had the 14” MBP since launch. It’s an amazing, portable machine but I missed the extra screen real estate from my old 15.6” intel MBP. I recently made the jump to the 16” and it’s perfect, definitely a more comfortable experience.
@@alexv8203 well, since your question is a year old sorry that folks here did not respond sooner. For those who are looking at the end of 2024 the answer is so obvious, based upon lots of experience---1 tb is the absolute minimum in ssd storage for photo storage/editing, and especially, video editing.
I just ordered the 16" top spec. An investment for years to come. Gonna be using it for my photography/videography and editing suite for my wife's youtube channel.
This whole video could be summed up in 30 seconds. 16" if you need the screen size and it's your only computer/monitor 14" if you want to actually use it a lot on the go because the 16" is a little on the big size
Lol finally someone who doesn't have noodles for arms!! Haha I've been reading the comments in all videos and was amazed seen how physically challenged most Apple users are when it comes to 1.2lbs of extra weight lol. Pitiful to whine about 1.2 weight. Dinner weighs more than that. He'll, someone's nuts are heavier than that.
@@akshay5569 Exactly my thoughts. I used to have a 16" Lenovo Legion SLIM 7i, which is already the lighter/ smaller version of the Legion 7 lineup, and this thing is almost 2,3 kg, yet still very easy to carry arround imo. I was always wondering why so many people complain about the 16" MBP not being portable with its 2,1kg :D
@@jdsd_ but ,I think it's because gaming laptops are supposed to be on the heavier side , since it has more fans ,GPU , liquid cooling.etc ,but mac has none of it yet it's more than 2 kg
I’ve got the 16” version and have to admit it’s a pretty hefty bit of kit. I do most of my work at home on it and agree for travelling 14” is the way to go
There is absolutely no issue with the portability factor, whether it's on the plane or when I carry it in my backpack. Only if you're a small child or have a physical disability, half a kilo might pose a problem
I got the 13" because it's just easier for traveling. It's not perfect for editing, but it works. It's crazy fast and the battery lasts forever. The big downside is that it charges with a regular USB-C port instead of the magnetic port.
@@yoyoamgamg6179 yes. I find the size difference makes me run into problems more then the weight however. Sometimes it will not fit in certain backpacks or briefcases. Makes me also want an Air in addition 😅
14” with 24 core M1max 32Gb is what I ordered on the day Apple launched it. Thermal throttling is minimal. Smaller overall footprint with a lot of power. Best bang for the buck IMO. Unfortunately it takes a couple of months to get one now. I’m just waiting for the software to catch up to the hardware.
how is the battery life holding up? I ordered the same thing and am nervous that i made the wrong choice by putting the m1max in the 14” . I also can’t find much content around this configuration, please let me know!
I ended up bailing on the 16” when I became aware of the size difference over my 2016 MBP. There’s no way around it - these are thicker and heavier than Apple’s recent offerings. Since I don’t do much work requiring significant screen real estate on the go I decided I was better off with the portability and plugging into my monitor at home. The 16” wouldn’t fit comfortably in any of my existing bags. It does feel pretty incredible to have the power this has in the 14” form factor.
Ya know…when I lived in SF and traveled a lot for work…they always gave us loaded 15” MBP’s. I ALWAYS said a 14” would be PERFECT for traveling!!! Trying to work with a 15” on an airplane tray?! Awful!!! I have the 14” and absolutely *LOVE* it!!!
@@whengrapespop5728 that's all you hear from these bought and sold "creators" is what is more cinematic. Funny none of them has ever worked in the real cinema business other than Phil Bloom and Josh Yoh
whats your feedback on it compared to 14, i travel a lot and my current 13inch is absolutely small for video editing , Is the 16inch heavy to cause problems or is it not that big of a deal , because the additional screen real estate is absolutely amazing
My girlfriend bought an M1 Max Pro and I edited several weeks with DaVinci Resolve. It was amazing compared to my old Windows PC. So much more Power and so quiet. Hard to believe. Then my new Windows PC arrived... After a few weeks I switched completely to my Desktop PC. Ok it is not a fair comparison between Laptop and Desktop. But price was almost the same and the PC is so much faster in editing and rendering as M1. Anyhow, I am more impressed than ever what Apple developed. My conclusion is if you want to edit everywhere you can do it easily with M1. If you want more Power and speed in editing for the same price stay at Windows at least what I experienced.
@@matthewleibrock4414 core components: Ryzen 5800X Trident 64GB DDR4-3600MHz RX 6900XT 2TB Samsung M.2 NVMe 7000/5200 I suspect that the SSD storage and especially the graphics card make the main difference. I have a side business as a professional videographer and therefore I use editing excessively. The main differences I notice are that all the footage imports into the project slightly faster and also really never have any micro stutters during playback. I had those with the M1 from time to time. Basically, exporting is pretty much the same speed, but with more effects (especially AI based features) the AMD card shines. However, I expected that, since the graphics chip is quite a big deal. I mainly edit 4K footage with H.264, H.265 and AppleProRes codec. Maybe the AMD card can handle those codecs better, but I don't know enough about codecs to make a good statement. So I'm just in the happy position that I have an insane performance at home and also on the road :))
Can anyone tell me if they're get these annoying little pop up ads at the bottom of every TH-cam video on their MacBook?.. Not sure if its normal or not and they're really irritating me! I don't mean the normal TH-cam ads you get when monetising your video.. These ads kind of just pop up throughout the video playing at he bottom of the video in the middle and im not sure if it's a virus or not. Any info would be much appreciated.
This was great Matti! At first I thought you were telling us which one we should buy and like you said it’s so subjective. I’m blown away that the 14” vs 16” price point is so close, it’s as if Apple doesn’t care which one you get just buy one. I grabbed the 14” and I’m loving it. I’d seen the trackpad of the two at Best Buy while waiting a month for mine to be delivered. I was worried I’d made the wrong choice but it’s the perfect size for me. At home I have a 34” Samsung monitor which is nice for editing. Thanks again for your thoughts.
I wish I was at a point in my life where I could just buy both of these machines for the subtle comfort of going between the two when I feel it 😂 very jealous and envious of you! 👏👏
@eddhorsky I returned the 16 inch because a got an insanely good deal for an M1 MacBook Pro. Because all the work I do right now can also be done with the M1. I didn't realise it until now (M1Pro/Max Hype Train) but saving over 2000€ gives you headspace for a fast external SSD to edit all Videos on and plenty money to invest in new gear(lights/camera/lenses). My biggest problem is that I am afraid that my work is not good enough for any client work. So I make content mostly for myself to get better at it. 🙈
As I got mine yesterday, I realized they don't have hardware acceleration when using h.264, I'm guessing that's because it only decodes? Anyone know why?
My biggest struggle! Lack of equipment. I know that "gear doesn't matter", but it kinda does. My camera screen is not working and i have overgrown my gear. Would really like to own something better. Thanks for asking 🥰. By the way i got an m1 mac mini and it literally changed my life.
Not all of us can afford apple or high end Expensive Mac...you should have made a video on some windows laptop or atleast one apple and one windows..that would have made more sense.
I looked up the dimensions of the first 15” PowerBook G4 I bought in 2004, and the form factor of the current 16” is only .25” wider and deeper, but when closed, is thinner than the powerbook was by about .4-.5”. Crazy! 1.2” larger screen but minimally larger than a laptop that 17 years ago I had no problem toting around. I’ve just gotten so used to my 2018 13.3” MBP so moving back to that larger form seems bulky… I’m sure we’d get used to it though if someone really wants that display.
Thanks Ryan for this insight! I literally was saying the old 15" was my sweet spot but I hadnt looked up the dimensions! I checked out the 16" the other day at the store and it is a BEAST in every way ! I guess go big or go home?
@@mattyjmogul It's tough- we've been so fortunate to have such great machines in small form factors- macbook air, 13 and 14" MBP... but I was surprised to find the new 16" with the smaller bezels compared to generation past Powerbook/MBP at 15", but larger bezels, really aren't TOO much different.. I have 15" laptops until they did away with them and went to 13". But its like the iphone vs Max... the Max FEELs huge, but most people (not all) I talk to that went with them got used them and appreciate the larger size. Ultimately each person needs to decide priority, but I was, again, surprised to find the size different not much different and more than likely someone who really likes that larger screen would get used to carrying it around in their bag.
i have a daily workload that runs the cpu at 75% and the gpu at 99% on an max 32 core gpu chip and have both a 14" and 16" specced this way and with manual fan control with TG pro i have to run the 14" fans on max and sit at 85c during this workload. Same workload on the 16" it sits at 65c with max fans or i can run variable custom curve and sit about 2500rpm (30-50% fan speed) to hover around 75c. Is the 16" way way better? Yes it is but the 14" isnt bad for such a load when it COULD hit and sustain 100-105c workload once in a blue moon yet it never happens and be fine. Its all about your workload and i believe 99.9999% of people dont use them anywhere near this peak. Even if they do, i can do the same on a windows machine with a gaming laptop 12th gen intel chip or 6000 series ryzen i also have on hand and end up hitting 95c and 90c sustained in a 14" and 16" respectively with wildly throttled voltages and absolute maxxed out fans triple the sound and annoyance. These macs are absolutely amazing.
If you one of the few that actually NEED the MAX, skip the 14". The 16' handles heat better and will give you the battery life when you're pushing your machine. That said I've used the following configurations: 16" Max/2TB/64RAM, 16" Pro/1TB/16RAM, 16" Pro/512GB/16RAM, 14" Pro/1TB/16RAM, 14" Pro/512GB/16RAM

I usually bring my laptop between work and home but for laptop use I mostly use it for smaller tasks and sometimes just to watch films and videos. But when I concentrate on work for hours I always use a monitor and keyboard. So the right choice for me is the 14" then? I'm use to my 15" Macbook pro (2015) screen size. So a 14" feels like a downgrade

Thanks for the great vid Matti! I’m still SO TORN 🤣 I want the biggest and best because I’m editing 24/7, but I’m also traveling 24/7….would I get tired of the massive size?! 🤦🏻♀️
I have the 16 and I travel with it -- full time content creator -- for me the screen size is KEY for editing while out there in the world... the screen feels even that much better then last years model with the thicker bezels, in premiere I don't feel like I'm struggling toooo bad with balancing the vertical layers in my timeline vs how big the monitor panel is. I bet the 14 would feel sexy tho. But for me...being full time on the comp.... plus the extra battery time... I carry some extra ch0nk. A little less sexy but I think better working experience for deep work. Battery time bump also. and better sounding speakers. btw got the silver and it looks sexy af
Hey guys, love your vlogs!!! I travel with the 16" M1MAX(is the haviest macbook) and I don't feel that is heavy at all. I love having all the power with me at all time.
I'm not using Macs, but my two Windows laptops are 17" and 14". Traveling, the larger size maxes out the space in most laptop compartments in my bags (but still fits). However, the larger screen is absolutely worth it for video. Editing photos on both feels about the same but editing in Premiere, I use all the space.
I got the 14 for the reasons you described. The fact you can spec out the 14 the same as the 16 is the big upgrade over previous generations. I had the 2019 15 and back in the day the old 17 model. The 14 really hits the sweet spot for travel without sacrificing performance.
Well the 16 inch m1 is physically SMALLER than the 15inch Intel from 2012 and I own the latter. And it is pretty mobile to me. So I don’t understand the size complaints. You will carry a backpack anyway when carrying these laptops, so what’s the deal? It even fits in a decent business leather bag…
I'm thinking the same thing. I had a 2013 Macbook Pro Retina 15 and the physical size of the new 16" would be about the same.....so it seems if I got the 14.....it would see, small to me?
Damn. While watching your video I went back and looked at the Apple store and realized it's a bit misleading: When you look at the 14" models it looks like you can only get it with the M1 Pro, but if you select one of them you can then select the M1 Max on the next page where you customize it. If I knew this before I would have gone with the 14" instead of the 16".
So i already have an iPad Pro for traveling etc... so if I am replacing my PC setup and using the MBP as my daily driver with no external display, would you still recommend the 14" or go with the 16" which has bigger screen, bigger speakers and bigger battery?
You can think of it two ways. You already have an iPad Pro for portability so you can get the 14 inch as well and use the iPad for the additional screen real estate using sidecar. Or you can look at it from the angle of already having a portable device therefore you would get the 16 inch which would serve its purpose elsewhere or pick up the slack from your iPad Pro. In the end it's kind of dealers choice I prefer 14 inch +12.9 inch iPad Pro but then again I've also had the 16 inch M1 and M2 and then you pretty much don't need sidecar at all though it's much bulkier. Then you also have to consider if you have an external monitor at home or office then the 14 inch is a no brainer but if you don't the 16 makes it so you don't have to buy an extra monitor and still have plenty of screen real estate.
@@BuiltInception thanks for the advice. The 16” would definitely replace the the 2 27” dual monitor setup i had as far as a bigger screen but the the 14” is better for pairing with external monitor. Apple Studio display would be ideal but costs as fortune. I like your idea of sidecar the iPad Pro with either the 16” or 14” and run it like that.
@@Pocket_Surfer Thats pretty much my daily setup is I pack a bag with my iPad Pro 12.9 and 14" MacBook Pro. At my office I have a Pro Display XDR (lol) I can plug in to otherwise using the iPad with 14 on the road is perfect. I use the iPad for sidecar and it works really well once you decide where your doing what (for example I like working with spreadsheets on the iPad as the aspect ratio provides more lines to see or I can zoom out and bring it closer to my face if needed and it works really well. At home I also have a monitor to use but tend not to as I dont like sitting at a desk all day and night if I dont have to which makes moving around with the 14 even more of a delight. I thought the 16 couldnt be beat for a long while but in the end the 14 just provides that much better of an experience for me. Any shortcomings it brings to the table can be negated when you dive into it.
@@BuiltInception 💯 agreed. I like the flex 💪🏻 on the Pro XDR monitor 😁Must be unreal watching content on it. I bet it would give our 65” Sony OLED a run for its money. The more I think about it the more I am realizing the 14 inch would offer the best of both worlds by portability plus excellent screen and picture quality and sound quality and works perfectly in conjunction with my iPad using Sidecar or if you’re on the road and decide to get a display. the only thing that I’m having concerns about is the reports that Apple is going to be putting out a new 15.3 inch MacBook Air and October at least according to Mark Germann at Blumberg and that that new 15.3 inch MacBook Air is going to have the same mini LED screen as the 14 inch MacBook Pro and it will be running the M3 chip.
@@Pocket_Surfer haha yea it's a luxury for sure. If I didnt have the ability to use external monitors though I would most defiantly have kept the 16". In fact I get trolled here and there about having the ladies version of the MacBook (due to smaller 14" size) because im a big guy haha. Jokes aside though it's really the great debate and for sure if there was a good solid 15" that would be the absolute perfect as 16" is. a hair too large and 14" a hair too small. Wasent a fan of the m2 air 15 but who knows what the future may hold.
my 2nd tier 14 inch m1 pro is faster than my 16 inch intel i9. Its crazy. Davinci, Final Cut are crazy fast. My music production programs work under rosetta pretty well. Happy AF with my choice

The other thing worth noting is that the 16" M1 Pro is going to offer the absolute best battery life. So if you don't need Max performance (and most of us honestly don't), that could be a good consideration
Yes but I like to know it’s there, and to pay for it, and never use the power 🤷♂️

I’m the context of video editing, would you go for 10core cpu, 16 core gpu, 512 gb ssd 16 inch mbp or a 14 inch same specs but 1tb ssd?
@@alexv8203 well, since your question is a year old sorry that folks here did not respond sooner. For those who are looking at the end of 2024 the answer is so obvious, based upon lots of experience---1 tb is the absolute minimum in ssd storage for photo storage/editing, and especially, video editing.
I just got the 16" M1 Max almost fully specced out after 2 months of waiting. This is an insanely great machine! So happy with the purchase.
You have no issues with the portability?
I just ordered the 16" top spec. An investment for years to come. Gonna be using it for my photography/videography and editing suite for my wife's youtube channel.
This whole video could be summed up in 30 seconds.
16" if you need the screen size and it's your only computer/monitor
14" if you want to actually use it a lot on the go because the 16" is a little on the big size
The 16" is in no way huge. Absolutely not huge. I've been using a 17" Asus ROG machine for 3 years. the 16" MBP in comparison is so sleek.
Lol finally someone who doesn't have noodles for arms!! Haha I've been reading the comments in all videos and was amazed seen how physically challenged most Apple users are when it comes to 1.2lbs of extra weight lol. Pitiful to whine about 1.2 weight. I’ve got the 16” version and have to admit it’s a pretty hefty bit of kit.

@Matti Haapoja is this a fake account 🙄
that's a downside? LOL wow you are so uninformed and so lacking in knowledge
I might say the opposite - if you travel maybe better to take the 16 for the screen real estate for editing : )

@@sierrafrancesca5578how is the decision now
I ended up bailing on the 16” when I became aware of the size difference over my 2016 MBP.
Awful!!!

whats your feedback on it compared to 14, i travel a lot and my current 13inch is absolutely small for video editing , Is the 16inch heavy to cause problems or is it not that big of a deal , because the additional screen real estate is absolutely amazing
Color grading is my biggest concern as creator! One hour with you would be great.

I suspect that the SSD storage and especially the graphics card make the main difference.

Using the M1 Max MacBook Pro for a while now and I love it. There is nothing that this machine is not capable of doing.

Would love to pick your brains about strategy and structure. Iam having a hard time with the start
i have a daily workload that runs the cpu at 75% and the gpu at 99% on an max 32 core gpu chip and have both a 14" and 16" specced this way and with manual fan control with TG pro i have to run the 14" fans on max and sit at 85c during this workload.
Im still rocking my I7 2015 Mac lol..... btw im struggling to create more vids regularly, how do you organise the time?
Does anyone know how these laptops perform when editing 4k footage in premiere pro? I have to for work so I’m curious!
More than enough. It’s rather Premiere that tends to crash as it’s a buggy software compared to Avid or DaVinci Resolve.

You are wrong, the 16-inch MacBook is the same size as the 15-inch models (2020 and earlier).
@@zoltanzana yes I had the 15 model it replaced. I was not speaking about the physical size but the performance.

How the hell can you guys edit only using the touchpad? I would love to see an how to video to improve my skills

Yessss me too!!
When you say both of those measurements I (an American) am like "oh...less than one inch!"
