    Tempest and Urza's were the best editions, joined with VI edition. Oh, good times.
    Now you can play a 5/4 on turn four and a 12/12 on turn 3...

    Tempest was the expansion set I stopped collecting MTG... to this day, Tempest is still in my opinion one of the best expansions I ever played/collected. After Fifth Edition, the stuff that came out of Tempest absolutely blew my mind. None of my friends at the time was into MTG as much as I was but still played, yet only had cards prior to Tempest. The spells, and creatures (slivers, especially) took them to pound town and I've loved Tempest ever since.
    I know MTG's come a long way, but I honestly feel like it will never be as exciting as it was circa Tempest era.

      I'm feeling you man:) Also played a lot in the Ice/Age/4th/5th/Tempest/Weaterlight/Mirage and I loved Tempest so much. Also what you're saying.. these cards back in the day have more atmosphere and story to tell than the new cards today(But also there are some cards today which has this old, deep Magic feeling, but not so much cards than back in the days).

    The 12 starter decks are not quite equivalent to 36 boosters. The number of rares and uncommons is the same, but you get 396 common in the booster box, while in the starter box you get 312 commons + a bunch of basic lands. There's actually more total cards, but fewer commons. And since the commons have quite a bit of money value now, the booster box is the slightly better deal.

    Rudy, do you think there is a correlation between the downgrade cardstock quality and the increase of products Wizards release now? Can they fix the quality while maintaining this fast pace? Long time you have not talk about wallet fatigue... did you realize that in the last two weeks we've been promoted with M25, Dominaria, Jace Spellbook, Elves Vs Inventors, etc. Add to that the fact that Arena get more attention as it can be stream. We even get a glimpse on Heroes of Dominaria. And Wizards even promote between all that their Brawl format. Is it me or is it too much? How with all these products promotion I could get intesrested in them when my attention is spread everywhere? Even if M25 would have been good it would heve been already an historic thing. Would like you talk more about this buisness model and if you think its is good for Wizard on the long term.

    • @n0isyturtle
      @n0isyturtle 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      There absolutely is a correlation. Just look at the set/block release dates. The exact time they started doubling down on annual sets is the exact time the quality dropped dramatically.

    • @Backiinthegame
      @Backiinthegame 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      They are simply trying to stop the bleeding with quantity over quality, they realize that they're out of touch with the people and don't know what will make them happy so they're trying to take shots in the dark hoping the people will by chance like one of them.

    • @codedthreat5981
      @codedthreat5981 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Well they have to know there is a problem, but I believe we might be getting the pitchforks for the wrong people. I think 3 years ago Mark Rosewater did panel at comic con talking about the shift from Core Sets and 3 blocks in a set to the new 2 block system, but in there he also said that they are working 2 years ahead. By "they" he was referring to himself and the people at WoTC. So R&D and design and testing, not to mention the artists are all working towards putting out a good set far in advance of anything else that happens. That also means their plate is full.
      I think Hasbro (and their marketing teams and "Market Research") is the one pushing all this extra product and putting a strain on the production side, demanding costs be cut while pushing out all this extra stuff, and that is causing the issues. Pushing out 10+ different products in a 2-3 month period isn't something they ever did until Hasbro go their hands in there. And it isn't like Hasbro doesn't have a track record for doing this with their properties. So I am weary of calling out WoTC all the time because they could very well be working to fix things, but they move slow and might not be entirely in control anymore.

    • @ThisNameIsBanned
      @ThisNameIsBanned 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They SIMPLY need to get a proper factory to produce cards.
      European cards are totally fine, but all the cards they produce in the US are literally toilet paper.
      So there is your reason, MADE IN US is really not a quality you want ... (at least not in that shit-factory)

    • @codedthreat5981
      @codedthreat5981 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      They have been producing cards for over 20 years. And that same "shit" US factory also put out product that was totally fine in the same time frame.

      Edwin the Magic Engineer
      1. He did get a propaganda.
      2. It isn’t entirely out of the realm to get no petals because there’s gotta be at least 100 commons in this set.
      3. Scroll racks are like 30, and that itself is the value of a bit more than one earthcraft. The third scroll racks makes up for no time warp.
      4. The bigger deal is no wasteland :/

    Back in the day, Tempest was among my favorite sets. Though, this box opening felt like a kick in the nuts. Scroll Rack was a 4-6 $ card in 1997/98 but Cursed Scroll was definitely the top card, at one point being worth well over 20 $. I remember Kai Budde using a play-set in his 1999 world championship winning red artifact deck - in fact I believe Cursed Scroll was part of the top four decklists. Kai's deck was really something else. It featured a lot of cards from the Urza block but also Ancient Tomb and Boil from Tempest, or City of Traitors from Exodus. Great times ...

      I loved Urza Block. I remember going 9-0-1 at a PTQ with a deck NO ONE had thought to bring
      Lackey Sligh. First turn Goblin Lackey, 2nd turn Goblin Mutant 5/3 lol
      It was so fast, it crushed the slower combo deck 80% of the people were playing at the time, squirrel prison.
      Too bad I lost in the top 4, cus 2 spots qualified for Pro Tour ...
      I had so much potential at age 16....WHAT THE FUCK HAPPENED hahaha

    I love ya Rudy but you got you're off a bit on your value assumptions and why boosters were worth more than starters. Boosters have 11 commons per pack, for a total of 396 in a box. The starters only have 26, for a total of 312. With 110 commons in the set, those 84 extra chances for a Lotus Petal average out to about an extra Petal per box. Not a lot, but it was worth a few bucks with them being sought after right from the set release.
    Thank you for this trip down memory lane. I love Tempest as this was the first new set to come out when I started Magic, but with 110 rares there was a ton of variation from box to box. I bought several six box cases working on full playsets for my wife & me. On the average I only expected to get two of a rare per case of six boxes (216 rares / 110 = 1.96 per case)…I never saw anything like three Scroll Racks in a single box. New sets just don't have ratios like this anymore...for example, Ixalan was only 82 (Rares & Mythics) to 105 Commons.

    Of course booster packs are more random than starter decks. As of this point in the game, WotC did not allow repeats of the same card within the same individual pack. That means that you are more likely to get duplicates in a random assortment of booster packs than a random assortment of starter decks.

    What memories...I remember people throwing away ancient tombs. It used to be thought of as such a garbage card. Funny how magic evolves.

    Yeah cursed scroll is banned in its block. Used to always like a multiplayer deck I had with nature's revolt, spidersilk armor, and evincar's justice. All lands are 2/2s, except mine which are 2/3s and they all take 2 damage.

    Rudy, I hate the fact that you struggled with the inner pull line when there was a clean point where it starts :( e.g. in 15:40 you accidentally hit the right spot but still struggle with the wrong point :(
