God this shit brought me back. Great memories of being in 8th grade and ripping open packs of Masques down at the card shop. I have so many of these cards, the entire cycle of (Part) of Ramos artifacts, and loads of other worthless cards. I never cracked a Rishadan Port, but i do have an entire deck where every basic land is a Masques foil. I'd rather have a Port. This set was pretty hated, but I enjoyed it. The limited environment was pretty fun, and I personally LOVED the flavor of the set. I hate the new card frames, and miss the way cards used to look. Thanks for ripping open this box of nostalgia Rudy!
i think it felt like a step back to the vibe, and power level, of the pre tempest sets. a lot of the new mechanics, like spellshapers, were not as effective in practice as in theory. rebels were a highlight, and we had the tutoring for more creatures mechanic brought later with cards like Yisan the Wanderer Bard.
I built a complete set of mercadian marques from boosters and penny sleeved them when this was new! This is the set I came back to after I stoped playing during ice age. Fun stuff!! :)
I started playing when Urza's Saga was released and I was at what would be the absolute height of my MTG love by the time this set came out... good times.
I've been buying these for the past 3 weeks. My store gad a box and I've been buying them for $40 Canadian each. When my store saw your video they upped the price to 60. Fml.
Those basics are pretty sweet. As for foils warping, doesn't happen if you keep them compressed. Every foil I've ever gotten has gone right into a binder and even the couple Urza's Legacy foils I have aren't warped. Conversely, a friend gave me his box of basics years ago, which included a bunch of foils and every single one of those foils was warped.
Hey Rudy. Foils up to, I wanna say, Mirrodin were slotted in the pack rather than replacing a common and put to the back. So the machines would drop in a foil in position 1-15 every x cards. It was completely possible full packs of foil. My record was 2 out of a pack of Urza's Destiny.
I've just found 3 Mercadian Masques tourny packs in an old box I lost when moving house... A few nice cards recovered, but nothing expensive (I play commander now so, YAY!) - Food Chain, Magistrate's Scepter (foil), Heart of Ramos (foil), 6x Gush(!), etc... and, obviously; lots of foil lands :)
There were super rare MM packs (just normal packs from my understanding) that was 100% foils opened one during draft back in the day nothing great in it but amazing moment.
Ahhh yes this came out shortly after I began playing -- looking back on it now the flavor reminds me of Total Recall / Bladerunner meets Pirates of the Carribean... I love it.
Yea, they introduced those Premium Packs way too early and with content which could be bought easily at that time. If they made those same packs now with, let's say, original Ravnica or Mirrodin I think people would buy them a lot. Heck, do those for the Timespiral block and everyone tries to get a foil Tarmy with a wierd border.
Also, since that box had a mix of two different celephane seals it might have been repacked with decks from two different boxes. Check the deck boxes. If some say made in Belgium and others made in USA, you know you too the bus to hosetown.
The only foil card I got that stands out to me is my Slow Motion from Urza's legacy. The card is a low value common card, but it was my first ever foil card and as such it got a special spot. Never played with the card itself, but later made a deck with 4 regular Slow motions. Was interesting to see the openings here and nice to see how the foils were done.
At about 9:40 or so you mentioned you thought all starters had foils; I seem to remember that being the case, as well. Maybe it started a bit later, but it was definitely true in Kamigawa and later.
Masques had boxes where every card in the booster was rare and half the pack or so would be foils, the God boxes as they were called were some kind of error, I was fortunate enough to stumble across some loose packs from a person I bought out and had 3... no foil port though

I once got a God box of Mercadian Masques, with a foil rare in every pack, and all the other cards in the packs were rare. Amazing box, and 3 of the 6 in the case were that way.
16:30 I think I noticed a common that was missed & we never got to see it. It was a common stuck to the back of one of those extra inserts when rudy chucked the insert aside. It probably wasn't a foil common brainstorm or anything...right?

This block is tied for my second favourite block. Foil Masque lands are the best lands. I've been collecting them for a couple years now, and watching Rudy misopen all those starter packs hurts, the pull tab for the inner pack is above the halfway point ;)
Nostalgia! Masques was my first mtg set when my mom accidentally bought mtg instead of Pokemon cards for my brother and I. We didn't know what the cards did but the art was so much cooler than Pokemon art. (We loved Maggot Therapy)

I did. It was another Mercadian Masques tournament pack. My guess is since it was the first tournament packs after foils, instead of a guaranteed foil you had the same chance as a booster pack for foils. All 3 of your "boosters" in the tournament pack could get you a foil.
I've never played or collected Magic, but I enjoy trading cards in general. That being said, of all the artwork on cards that I've seen in Magic, this artwork may be my favorite.

The print rates were slower and the pigments / binders were unrestricted at that time. Now they run 200 ft a minute using less forgiving materials.
The foiling back then was incredible. Wish wizards would put that much effort into foils these days.
I will always love this set because it is the set that got me into Magic along with Prophecy. So many memories.

The lands in this set are amazing, the swamps in particular. I always use the swamps just because of the sand theme they bring.

Old design foils are the best foils. I have a foil "Cephalid Constable" from Judgment and, man, it's gorgeous.

Back before Invasion, I had actually gotten 15 card boosters that had two foils in them. Foil placement really was random in those early days.
Apparently you could get 1 foil Rare, 1 foil Uncommon and 1 foil Common in the early foil sets. Would be awesome if they brought that back!
