Between Bono's distinctive voice and The Edge's distinctive guitar playing, you can usually tell a U2 song within a couple of seconds after it begins playing. From the mid-80s through the 90s, they were basically the biggest band in the world. They are still recording and touring today. Sunday Bloody Sunday, Where The Streets Have No Name and I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For are three more U2 classics.

They're story is great too. They were teenagers when they did their first album. Larry Mullins, the drummer was only 17. The lead singer had the nickname Bono Vox (latin for Good Voice) from when he was young. They didn't really know how to play songs -- so they just wrote their own! And they have been together, with the same line up since 1979.

Their performance of 'Bad' at Live Aid put them on the map and set them up to become legends. Their performance at Live Aid was second only to Queen's. That should tell you everything you need to know.
My favourite song of theirs, though, has to be Where the Streets Have No Name.

I had the great luck to see U2 live in concert when they were first breaking through in the US [they're an Irish band]. Nobody really knew much about them except for maybe 2 or 3 songs. Saw them in a really small club. A couple drunks actually tried throwing beer bottles at Bono when he started singing... it was insane. Amazing show & the crowd was won over after about 5 minutes. Oh those crazy 80s.

U2 has been my favorite band since 1983. With or Without You is without a doubt one of their best songs. The Joshua Tree is incandescent from start to finish. The Unforgettable Fire and War are their best albums, IMHO. Their album All That You Can’t Leave Behind literally saved my life. I was diagnosed with cancer about 6 months after it came out in 2001. I listened to it every time I had chemo. One of their best live performances is their half-time show for the 2002 Super Bowl. They did one of the most cathartic memorials to those lost on 9/11.

U2 - Where do I begin? This is one great band. One piece of advice: Their early stuff is better than their later stuff. This song was off of their 1987 album “Joshua Tree”. A masterful piece of work.
Here are 3 initial suggestions- “Pride - In the Name of Love” which is dedicated to Martin Luther King, Jr., then the wildly acclaimed “Where the Streets Have No Name” - watch the official video atop a warehouse in downtown LA, then “Bad”. Bono’s vocals on this song will blow you away. Great band!

Bono has a wonderful voice and his emotions come through so well, its what makes the song so moving as well as the wonderful accompaniment of the rest of the band. I don't have a clue how many songs from the past you have listened to but your openness to the different types of music is wonderful sweetheart. I have a problem with headaches so I listen to a few songs sadly not all you post but I so enjoy your reactions to those I know. God bless you all, love hugs and peace to everyone Mary-Ellen UK

Hi Jayvee, you really express your feelings well listening to music. I think all of us who react to your reaction feel through you, we hear & feel songs for the first time again, as you hear for the your first time. Pride/In the Name of Love was one of my favourites from when I purchased the vinyl album back as a 19 year old in 1984. Enjoyed that, thanks very much, Tony

This was my high school boyfriend and my song. He was a good guy, treated me better than any man since. He wanted to get married and I turned him down. He kept waiting for me through two awful boyfriends and I finally told him to move on, he was so sad. He did and married and has three kids now. My mother still says I wished you had married Bo, "He had his heart in the right place" and he did. I can barely stand to listen without crying. But for some reason, those were the separate ways we were supposed to go.

"Joshua Tree" is THE soundtrack of the summer of '87. Every song on it is terrific. But you must listen to "War" from earlier in the decade. "New Years Day" and "Sunday Bloody Sunday." Saw them in concert with the War tour...8 rows from the stage in a funky old theater...one of the best shows if my life. Have never paid to see them since; by the time they toured here again the halls were way bigger and so were the tickets. (Yeah. I paid $14 to see them. Come on now.) But it wasn't the money. I just knew no stadium show would match that first intimate experience.

I can’t imagine what it must be like to hear that for the first time. It’s such an amazing tune, and definitely a classic! I live about a mile away from the drummer, and used to serve him and his mom every Sunday in a local hotel. This is U2 at their best, but they were amazing for a very long time. Check out ‘Boy’, ‘New Years day and the Unforgettable Flre too. They had their studio, Windmill Lane, in Dublin’s docklands and in the 80s and 90s , people from all over the world would visit, and some would cry when they saw it.

At the "Live Aid" concert U2 performed. They weren't a really well-known band, universally. However, during the performance, Bono looked down and saw a young woman who was being pushed up against the stage by the crowd. Afraid she would be harmed, Bono gave notice to the other band members, who continued to play the music. Bono jumped down, alerted security and then pulled the woman up out of the crowd. He made sure she was okay, then put his arms around her and they started dancing. When she assured him she was okay, he got back up on stage and continued their performance.

I’ve loved U2 since I first heard them sing “New Year’s Day“ from like 1981. It was the first we’d heard of this band called U2 and they had this cool video of them playing and singing in the deep snow and horses. Beautiful. Will never forget my first impression of them and could wait to hear more. One of the most enduring and productive rock bands from the 80s. Haunting is right. Mesmerizing. Also try “Sunday Bloody Sunday,” “Gloria” and why not the whole live album “Under a Blood Red Sky”.

Really enjoyed your reaction. Welcome aboard the U2 train...always room for more. Been a passenger since 1980. Some of their earlier work is outstanding like New Year's Day, Pride, Bad (check out the live performance at Live-Aid). Stuff from The Joshua Tree album is essential, like I still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For, and Where the Streets Have No Name. Later works include the live version of Kite in Sydney Australia...beautiful guitar solo from The Edge on that one. I really like the live version of All I Want is You / Where the Streets Have No Name at Slane Castle in Dublin...Bono's father passed away a few days before this concert, and he buried his father that very morning...Bono's performance was incredible. Anyways, rambled on long enough... liked and subscribed, and thanks for posting!

I have listened to U2 since I was 12 and they were the new band from Ireland on college radio before regular mainstream played them. I used to beg to stay out of Church Sunday nights to hear them. I drove 8 hours from Nashville to Chi Town to see them lol. If you want to start from the beginning, do "New Year's Day", "Seconds" or "Sunday Bloody Sunday". 11 O'Clock Tick Tock is another from that early 80s new wave period. "Sometimes You Can't Make It On Your Own" is gorgeous and was written for his Dad. There is a huge amount of U2 to delve into. They're great artists.
