Hi all welcome back to another video Dereck Reacts back at it again! This time around we take a look at another U2 reaction with U2's 1987 song "With Or Without You." Frontman Bono really hits you with his soaring vocals and catchy but mesmerizing melody. The atmospheric sounds coming from all the instrumentation, is something else!

Hi Dereck! Thanks for your react on U2. This song was released on March 21, 1987 as the lead single from their fifth album "The Joshua Tree" and ranked no.10 in TOP 50 in France.
It marked the international consecration of the group because placed N°1 in more than 23 countries. The song became their first to top the "Billboard Hot 100" for three weeks and the "RPM" chart for one week in the United States and Canada.
It's a love song with a deep and ambiguous text dealing with the opposite feelings related to love. The song's lyrics were inspired by Bono's conflicted feelings between the lives of a musician and the married man he leads without one encroaching on the other. This title made him realize that he didn't fully recognize himself in these two aspects of his life but rather in their opposition therefore finding pleasure in the tension between the two.
Since then the song has become a CLASSIC of the group because it is played very often during concerts and is present on many compilations and in concert videos.
I recommend you in this album, the song "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For" the second single or the "follow up" as you'd say😉 and also my fav "Where The Streets Have No Name" cuz I believe that the videoclip was shot in the streets of Los Angeles but also on the roof of a building or a store. It hit me when I was a kid back then.I remember it very well too because it came out in the summer almost towards the end of August if I'm not mistaken.
Moreover it was a very commercial title according to the critics (one of the most popular songs of the group) and the music video was also rewarded.
Thanks for your amazing work our American crony. 👌🇫🇷

Love this song. It was such a surprise from them at the time; we were used to seeing them as 4 moody post-punk politically fiery Irishman. Suddenly we're hearing a relationship song from them and not yet another power ballad which was so popular in the 80s... but a real, mature song which was moody, tense, restrained and had a feverish heat to it. It still smolders today and stands among their best work.

1987 : The whole Joshua Tree album is IGNICENT, it totally blew the mind of an entire generation of teenagers (me first :)) .
2017 : The Joshua Tree Tour blew on the still red ashes and lit the fire again.
You should have a glimpse to "where the streets have no name" live from the Tour.
Behind the band, a huge widescreen shows footage of the desert from a moving car. Mesmerizing.

Dude. Everything you said about this song is exactly how I felt the first time I saw it on MTV in 1987. This is such a timeless piece, the musicality and the sheer emotion in this song is incredible. The crazy things about is that while it is layered and builds little by little it really isn't that complicated a song, based around those four main chords the Bass comes in with. Yet it is absolutely a masterpiece of musical art. Great reaction. Oh and Dude, talking about the hate mail you said you get because you don't know the music of those times or people saying you should? Just ignore it man. Reactors like you give us the joy of experiencing the song again almost like we did the first time. That's priceless stuuf man, so thanks and best to ya.

A stunning band that are so phenomenal as a lot be act too !!! I’ve seen them a few times and each time was an amazing day and you felt so euphoric with the sound of their tracks still lingering with you on the road home too ….. One of the best times was when they played at Murayfield Stadium in Edinburgh on the Pop Mart tour. The venue held about 60,000 between seated and standing. I was working for a security firm at the time that did the security for most of the venues in Edinburgh and Glasgow that held larger concert numbers. I was stationed in the mid section at the back of the stadium furthest from the stage. I got a spare pair of tickets and gave one to my boyfriend and it was such a well behaved section that all I had to do was to walk up and down the steps checking no one was needing help. I spent the rest of the show just standing there watching the show and it was such a special night …. It’s one of the best shows I’ve seen and made so special that I had Stewart with me xxxxx Amazing !!!

My first U2 song was Two Hearts Beat as One and it took about a month before I found out the name of the band. In the past, when listening to the FM radio you'd wait till the end of the song to find out the song name and the band name. But so often a commercial break came on and you'd have to wait to hear it again and hope you'd get it. Some songs from other bands took a few years to find out who they were. I'm sure this happened to a lot of people that grew up in the 70's and 80's.
I've been a fan of U2 since then.

The Joshua Tree was written lyrically by Bono specifically for & about America. Bono was so adept & brilliant lyrically, that he he could write songs with a surface meaning & a deeper more macro meaning as well. While this song is written in a person to person context, it is also a song written by the world to America. Bono is a outright genius & Poet Laureate for a generation.

From liking much of U2 songs over many albums, I found out about Daniel Lanois, French Canadian pronounced like Lan-Wah, who produced a lot of their music, a lot of other great music like some of Peter Gabriel's, also the sound track to the game Red Dead Redemption 2. Daniel is truly a musical genius. After listening to Daniels own music I could hear his influence in their sound. "Still Water", "Jolie Louise" "The Maker" are just a few I recommend.

Brilliant song from one and if not the best albums by the band The Joshua tree, you should react to this song live especially from the 360 tour. Another song you should react to is All I Want is You from the next album Rattle and Hum, which is my favourite song by the band

It's probably best to listen to U2 in their middle period here with The Joshua Tree. Work your way up to Achtung Baby then go in reverse to the very beginning - 'Boy'. They get progressively better with each one. Joshua Tree is the all time classic for me.

This is absolutely my favorite U2 song. If you want to hear a great cover of this, check out the version Luke Evans did a couple of years ago. I like his version almost as much as the original.

    Hello Dereck,
I remember listen to U2 in 83, it was my first work and we had the radio in the hot foil workshop (printing) with the noise of the machines. The friend who had me hired in his company left us very young; he wasn't even thirty years old. And I can't separate U2 from his face anymore. So they are now irretrievably linked in my mind.
So thank you Dereck for this very short lil' trip to the land of yesteryear.
Next (I've seen there are Balavoine & Orelsan, I can wait!) ... 😋😅
