This was such a historical day for both Chuck Yeager and America 🇺🇸. I’m still amazed at how Chuck managed to break the sound barrier having 3 broken ribs at the time of the flight.

When he said the Mach meter was broken, that was code. He was telling them he broke the sound barrier. It was in case the Russians were listening. There was nothing wrong with the meter. No one was watching and waiting on the ground except the engineers and the people involved in the test. Only they knew about it. He did in fact have broken ribs.
This is so awesome. I remember hearing sonic booms from concords leaving Nashville airport when I was in Elementary School. It was the coolest thing.

yeah they had bullets that went well past the sound barrier too, they mainly wanted to get a plane going that fast
Yeager and his first and the worlds 3rd Mach 1 flight. Yeah go to wiki or the Smithsonian. Both cowards and won't admit they've been wrong all along. Notice they now credit Yeager with being the first to break the sound barrier IN LEVEL flight. This is known as moving the goalpost.
You see North American test pilot George Welch did it in a dive in the XF-86, twice before Yeager. All by himself I might add just went up to 40,000 ft., pushed the nose over and down he went and should be into aviation history.
I'm all for giving credit, where credit is do and the fact that everyone got it wrong is no excuse to stiff George Welch. He did it, he was first and he should wear the crown.
Messerschmitt Me-262 pilot Hans Mutke was the first to fly supersonic in a dive and live to tell the tale.

Yeager knew the flight would change his life - if he succeeded.
At 1.39 you can see a swept wing chase plane. I didn't know there were any swept wing fighters in 1947 in USA. Looks a bit like an F-86 - Maybe prototype?
