I watched General Yeager fly an F-4 back in the early 1990's at an airshow at Edwards AFB. He came out and spoke a few words and that was it. As a pilot myself, I have always looked up to Yeager and have nothing but respect for him. The reality is that he is INCREDIBLY modest and was one HELL of a good pilot, if not the greatest in history.
We need more Chuck Yeagers today. We need them more than ever. He sums up everything about being American. Not afraid to take a chance and risk to become exceptional!!!

I read his autobiography many decades ago and was absolutely intrigued by it. What a fascinating life he had and he just took it in stride. Always saddens me when someone leaves us, however I think 97 years on this earth he lived his time wisely. Thank you Sir for your contributions!
I have read his autobiography as well. I was honored to know that I was related to him and get to read about his exploits in WW2 and in the years afterwards. I got to learn a few things about him from family related to him long before the book came out too. But some of the other things I didn't know about either.
There was good reason to have a degree as a requirement. All of the early astronauts worked hand in hand with the contractors that designed and built the spacecraft they flew in. A lot were trained engineers.
Uncle "Chuck" Yeager is my great uncle. And I am so proud to say that. Wish I had met him before he died this past December 7th. But my dad who was his nephew, had met him as a kid in West Virginia.
I knew the General personally, he was an amazing man and I will forever remember our conversations early in the morning while we are fresh fruit together from a fruit stand he used to stop by on his way from his home to my place of work. He was down to earth and a regular guy. I miss him
Gen Yeager came up the hard way, he was an aircraft mechanic that went to flight school in WWII and had that naturally flying ability that made him an ace over Europe. He was shot down over France and smuggled back to England where he pleaded not to be sent back home with Gen Eisenhower as was customary until the war ended. He made General because he was an inspiration to everyone including politicians.
Seen the movie. Liked it a lot. Lived through some of those times and I recall that you'd see or hear on the radio or TV snippets of these doings. It's likely hard to understand for the newer generations that the math that made all of this possible was done with, more or less, with a sheet of paper a pencil, and a pocket slide rule. Them were the days indeed.
I was never interested in it until last year. After watching it online i had to buy the best copy i could. A beautiful blu ray with a book fitted it perfectly. I’m actually going to watch it in about half an hour. It’s one of the greatest true movies ever made.. by a mile
“You don’t have to be good to be a legend, you just gotta live.” That may be so but being good goes a long way towards keeping you alive! After 97 years I would say Chuck was REAL good!
Chuck Yeager was a true American hero. First human to fly at supersonic speed way back in 1947. 73 years ago. In my opinion, he was the first pioneer astronaut though he never got to fly in space. It would’ve been nice if NASA had given him a chance later in life to fly on the space shuttle like they did John Glenn.
@@kbanghart Well there is nothing documented that saying that they did. He was not one of the original seven mercury astronauts. Or Gemini. Or Apollo. It is possible that may be all he wanted to do was fly fast jets. And there certainly is nothing wrong with that. Pushing the envelope is one of the definitions of progress.
Chuck Yeager was on the US government committee to select the first astronauts in the 1950s .He was part of the group that setup NASA back then it was called NACA. People also dont know that he was a fighter pilot in WW 2 and was shot down over France and escaped by crossing over the Pyraness mountains into Spain pretending to be a French citizen then took a ship back to England and rejoined his fighter squadron and continued flying in the war.
I had the privilege to fly with Mr. Yeager. None of these fictionalizations come close to what a Lion he was. He is the antithesis of "never meet your hero". He was a legend among men to a 14 year old boy. He treated me like an equal (of course I was not). He will always be legend in my history.
Thank you general for making sure it was told the way it should be my childhood favorite movie and what got me into aviation. The right stuff is a must watch for anyone wanting to know what the right stuff really is and spoilers but the show you in the beginning of the movie
There a good interview from the SR71C Pilot Who was with him in the trainer SR for new pilots? Gen Yeager was flying the aircraft in the front and out of the blue ask the instructor in the back to take over the aircraft for a second then Yeager tell the other pilot the view is spectacular then adds in the test pilot world you never really do get to enjoy the view your tied up in the aircraft you,are flying

Man that scene with Gus grissom just makes me sad. If it wasn't for Apollo 1 he would have been the first man on the Moon. If you don't believe me look it up. they wanted a Mercury astronaut for the Moon.
Unforgivable what Tom wolf did to Gus. If it wasn't for the malfunction of the hatch on his mercury spacecraft the Apollo 1 astronauts would have been able too escape from the fire.

I think he is/was a good pilot. He was a kinetic pilot, he could tell how the jet was maneuvering. He had that ability to stay calm and think what he had to do. Plus... something was watching out for him.
