I think it personally can remove a reason you might be able to use to dismiss a loss. “I lost because of the connection, but the connection was bad because of the *opponent*, not me.”
Doesn’t apply to everyone obviously but I feel like some people take it as a personal attack for some reason. Like saying “your connection is bad” is like saying “you are a bad person” or something like that. I don’t understand that either but that’s just what it seems like to me for some people.

I remember when Sakurai said "we looked into rollback but it had significant side-effects", there we people replying saying "oh wow, how nice and amazing of Sakurai to try and add Rollback into Smash Bros." Like he's the greatest person alive because someone else that worked on the game that might not have even talked with Sakurai tried to add rollback and gave up at the first hurdle.

I really feel like Sakurai hasn't played other fighting games in 20 years so he has no idea of all the QoL improvements made over the years the in genre nor how a game's online infrastructure should be, I don't think Sakurai has time to play any game online let alone fighting games. It's crazy to me that Ultimate not only doesn't have a rematch option but it also DESELECTS your characters when you go back to the character select screen, it's absurd. Meanwhile other fighting game devs don't play smash so they don't know of the few things Smash has done to quality of life that should be in every fighting game ever, like storing control schemes in name tags, let players back out and enter a match in the character selection screen so you don't have to go the main menu to get someone else's controller working, loading the goddamn stage while people are choosing characters and start loading characters as soon as they're picked to make loading faster and an option to frame advance in training mode. There are probably some more I'm forgetting about but these are the ones that first came to my mind.
It blows my mind that they have frame advance in training mode but then the rest of the training mode is shit. It almost feels like one rogue fighting game developer managed to sneak in a good feature when the rest of the devs weren't looking lmao

I stopped playing Smash online because it really did feel like I was in prison and forced to play 4v4s when i didn't want to. I queued up for 1v1 and the game would FORCE me to play 4v4s with laggy wifi warriors. I felt like I was being held hostage and it made me so bitter and angry I just dropped the game. Smash Ultimate has the worst online experience of any game I've ever played and its not even close.
I stopped playing SFV after they patched the fan patch because my wifi only laptop was nothing but trash connections. Set up my desktop with wired and now I can play again. Get those tables caped up people.
This reminds me of when i had to argue with smash players about how they need to display the current input delay when playing online and it was just a huge foriegn concept to them

What you really need to advocate for is a jitter indicator. WiFi isn't inherently the problem, but more often than not high jitter is associated with WiFi. I can play with 6ms of jitter on WiFi with my setup (tested over 10+ minutes of actively playing a game), or I could tether my cell phone to get a "wired" connection and subject people to >500ms of jitter.
On behalf of the smash community I'm sorry. 80% of people only paly at parties and think wave dashing takes a college degree from training mode to do properly.

Ultimate's Quickplay/Elite Smash forces you to pick a character before you start finding a match. So there is no way to see someone's connection before the match starts. HOWEVER, in Smash4's For Glory mode, you went back to the character select after each match, allowing you to see who you're going to face and allowing you to change character.

The inability to refuse matches is especially annoying when you get put in a free for all and you see that a third person has entered but you can't quit (you can disconnect but that makes you get timed out for ten minutes) so you have to sit through playing a free for all.
Since Strive came out on PC I've been fiending to play. Unfortunately I can only play on WiFi and I feel so bad when playing online whilst on WiFi. Rollback is good but it's not good enough to fix WiFi.

This is 100% accurate. As a WiFi player myself, I want to get a more stable connection (my plan is powerline adaptors). I can absolutely understand that not everyone has a choice, but that doesn't mean WiFi is suddenly ok. And if you do have the option, you should absolutely take it.

I am sadly a wifi warrior. Had to stop playing project m because I could no longer have a stable connection. My wifi isn't bad but the jitters just ruin everything and it made the game unplayable for all involved. Slippi seems to be the savior it feels perfect to me and most of the time I get 1 & done it's because I am getting bodied to hard. Hopefully I can back on ethernet soon
I actually had a wifi-player (MK 11, indicator but no decline system) turn on his mic at the start of a match and say "hey man, thanks for carrying our connection with your wire." Fucker knew my connection was better than his and fucking thanked me like I wanted to play against his trash connection.
I used to believe that my wifi was serviceable given that I lived alone with my pc, phone, and switch. Eventually my friend talked me into ordering a lan cable and it changed my life.
Casual Nintendo fans are the worst, brand loyalty is literally brain poison. I've followed the homebrew/console modding scene for 10+ years and they've always been obnoxious about being wrong and like, uncomfortably apologetic towards billion dollar companies that don't have their best interests in mind.
The ONLY issue I have with players who dislike WiFi, is the condescending comments that only serve to further their purpose from a solution. “Just get an Ethernet cable, it’s not hard”. As Sajam mentions, sometimes in life you have to deal with it(landlord for me), and if you don’t want to play with WiFi players that’s your right and I don’t have an issue with that. But I hear so much shit on R/Fighters or really any fighting game forum that just tell WiFi players to either get a wired connection or just not play online fighting games whenever the topic comes up. Don’t be mad at the player base for reasonable life restrictions, be angry at the developers of your favorite game for not having Rollback.
I've was on Wi-fi for all my FG time and agree that it was inferior but I only just recently had the opportunity to get a wired connection. I just gotta say, if you don't have a good excuse as to why then you're just being a baby about it because it'll be better for everyone involved if you're wired.

To be fair, you can play with up to 4 players on smash online. If one was able to decline a match based on an opponent's connection, they will have to be able to do so for each of the other 3 players, rather than just one. This certainly isn't as simple, witch is what I believe to be part of the reason as to why implementing a refusal system could be an issue.
The wifi vs. cable debate shouldn't be directed at the players. It should be directed at the developers. There's a reason the "sweatlords" comments come into this conversation and that is because some people just want to play some Smash or whatever online without feeling they're just walking into a hugely competitive environment. Devs should do a better job of separating the fun online play from the competitive. Maybe make wired connections a requirement for competitive modes. Games are clearly broad platforms that attract different types of people. It's not segregation if everyone can get their game on the way they prefer.

The parry window in Smash Ultimate is 5 frames. The delay in a perfect ethernet match is 5 frames. Do the math.
Now imagine throwing Wi-fi in the mix.

What you really need to advocate for is a jitter indicator. WiFi isn't inherently the problem, but more often than not high jitter is associated with WiFi. I can play with 6ms of jitter on WiFi with my setup (tested over 10+ minutes of actively playing a game), or I could tether my cell phone to get a "wired" connection and subject people to >500ms of jitter.

I am a Wi fi warrior, my connection is trash and people should be able to have the option to refuse matches against me. I know my connection is unstable but I'm not trying to go pro.
Admitting that your connection sucks and as a result people should be allowed to decline matches with you, and explaining that you are not trying to wire up because you are not trying to be pro (that is what I think you meant anyway.

Wifi warriors never change. I think the reason Smash Ultimate people are the worst about it is because you have to buy a $30 LAN adapter just to be able to plug an ethernet cord into the Switch. I stopped playing Ultimate months ago solely because playing Fox and Marth in a world where I'm the only person who has a wired connection just isn't worth it.

Making smash players mald is actually so fun
Ultimate's Quickplay/Elite Smash forces you to pick a character before you start finding a match. So there is no way to see someone's connection before the match starts. HOWEVER, in Smash4's For Glory mode, you went back to the character select after each match, allowing you to see who you're going to face and allowing you to change character.

As a “Little Timmy” who has gotten really good, I really wish my parents would let me use an Ethernet cable. I wish I could have a better connection and I fully support showing ping.
The inability to refuse matches is especially annoying when you get put in a free for all and you see that a third person has entered but you can't quit (you can disconnect but that makes you get timed out for ten minutes) so you have to sit through playing a free for all.
If you think that Smash online is bad (UI an QoL wise), try to make up a party with your friends on Splatoon 2...

Since Strive came out on PC I've been fiending to play. Unfortunately I can only play on WiFi and I feel so bad when playing online whilst on WiFi. Rollback is good but it's not good enough to fix WiFi.

This is 100% accurate. As a WiFi player myself, I want to get a more stable connection (my plan is powerline adaptors).
I can absolutely understand that not everyone has a choice, but that doesn't mean WiFi is suddenly ok. And if you do have the option, you should absolutely take it.

I am sadly a wifi warrior. Had to stop playing project m because I could no longer have a stable connection. My wifi isn't bad but the jitters just ruin everything and it made the game unplayable for all involved. Slippi seems to be the savior it feels perfect to me and most of the time I get 1 & done it's because I am getting bodied to hard. Hopefully I can back on ethernet soon

I actually had a wifi-player (MK 11, indicator but no decline system) turn on his mic at the start of a match and say "hey man, thanks for carrying our connection with your wire." Fucker knew my connection was better than his and fucking thanked me like I wanted to play against his trash connection.
I used to believe that my wifi was serviceable given that I lived alone with my pc, phone, and switch. Eventually my friend talked me into ordering a lan cable and it changed my life.

Casual Nintendo fans are the worst, brand loyalty is literally brain poison. I've followed the homebrew/console modding scene for 10+ years and they've always been obnoxious about being wrong and like, uncomfortably apologetic towards billion dollar companies that don't have their best interests in mind.
The ONLY issue I have with players who dislike WiFi, is the condescending comments that only serve to further their purpose from a solution. “Just get an Ethernet cable, it’s not hard”. As Sajam mentions, sometimes in life you have to deal with it(landlord for me), and if you don’t want to play with WiFi players that’s your right and I don’t have an issue with that.
But I hear so much shit on R/Fighters or really any fighting game forum that just tell WiFi players to either get a wired connection or just not play online fighting games whenever the topic comes up. Don’t be mad at the player base for reasonable life restrictions, be angry at the developers of your favorite game for not having Rollback.
All Nintendo has to do is put a ping limit in preferred rules. IT'S ALL THEY HAVE TO DO!

I've was on Wi-fi for all my FG time and agree that it was inferior but I only just recently had the opportunity to get a wired connection. I just gotta say, if you don't have a good excuse as to why then you're just being a baby about it because it'll be better for everyone involved if you're wired.

As someone who plays smash I can assure that most smash players do not realise other fighting games exist
To be fair, you can play with up to 4 players on smash online. If one was able to decline a match based on an opponent's connection, they will have to be able to do so for each of the other 3 players, rather than just one. This certainly isn't as simple, witch is what I believe to be part of the reason as to why implementing a refusal system could be an issue.
The wifi vs. cable debate shouldn't be directed at the players. It should be directed at the developers. There's a reason the "sweatlords" comments come into this conversation and that is because some people just want to play some Smash or whatever online without feeling they're just walking into a hugely competitive environment. Devs should do a better job of separating the fun online play from the competitive. Maybe make wired connections a requirement for competitive modes. Games are clearly broad platforms that attract different types of people. It's not segregation if everyone can get their game on the way they prefer.
