the discussion on commentary also being improved once you know the game and also putting people off when the commentators know significantly less than you is important both for commentators learning the titles they wanna commentate for, as well as TOs hiring people who know their shit in a specific game it'd be sick to see a lot of high tier commentators like you, yipes, rip, steve, etc just go to Any fighting game out there but there's not only the risk of being stuck into a more awkward commentary since you don't clearly know what's happening on screen, there's also the risk of hyping up lame clips, being unresponsive to some really dope interactions, And misinforming the audience depending on what you say unknowingly
You can probably do an entire video on the commentary aspect. I stopped being into the smash scene mainly becuase thry let people commentate that have no idea what is going on. Commentators need to educate aud8ences and correct misconceptions and even cirtique play when necessary. Its a hard job but it still nerfd to be done well. It can impact your community heavily.
I think a "problem" with the "it is very easy to jingle some keys in your face and be like "oh shit" " 18:25 is that actually for 95% minimum of the people watching, the jingling keys in the face kind of commentary would be very effective and cool. It's really that thing that would set apart people that really know their game and the people that don't and I think it's "fine" ish actually. I like shiny things and jingly keys most of the time too like everyone else. Edit: ok I typed that without watching the full video, jingling keys are for caedrel viewers, 100% agree ahah
So your comment about wanting someone who knows what they're talking about commenting the big stage, and that not a lot of people really do it right, is such a bigger problem than just the FGC. I watch a lot of sports, and i think it's safe to say even like the lowest viewership sport you've heard of draws more eyeballs than the hypest hype EVO moments. Some play by play guys make hundreds of thousands of dollars a year calling stuff for like ESPN. And even they rarely seem to know anything about anything. I'm a big NHL guy and the amount of times announcers get the player's names wrong when it's a national broadcast is alarming. I say all of this to say I appreciate your dedication to the actual craft of commentary, Sajam. It's a dying art.
On the commentator thing, yeah that's why in *redacted game* where they pretend hitting a normal is the most hype thing ever. On the mix, I think the problem is we know what is going on, it might not be a mix up per say but we know something is coming their way.
@@Jamik96 by his own (extremely flawed) definition, unnlockables like the one he showed for mei aren't mixups. Again by his definition, whether the setup is visually ambiguous or not is completely irrelevant, and yet he refers back to this category a few times throughout. The definition is flawed because of two main reasons. One of them concerns the dichotomy between descriptivism and prescriptivism as approaches to regulating the use of language, and it doesn't really interest anyone here, I'd assume. The other one, more relevant to the discussion, is that the lived reality of playing fighting games is that defense isn't played perfectly. For this reasons, terms such as "true 50/50" or "true mixup" arise. People use the generic term to describe any situation in which there's some sort of defensive reaction/guess, and then there is further terminology for when the mix-ups is more real, not fuzzy-able, it frametraps, it beats reversals etc. The reason why being so strict with the use of this term makes little sense imo is that pretty much all of fighting games rely on a combination of guessing and reacting (managing mental stack). Cutting many situations out of that "mixup" umbrella serves very little purpose. (And I could go on) That being said, there's a reason why I didn't comment under his original video, I don't really think any of what I say here is really that impactful in this context. There are issues with the use of terminology, and some things are a bit loose, but the purpose of the discussion is clear, and my points don't really affect it. Still, I get triggered when someone tries to "um akschually", because I'm the king of that, and no-one can out-"um akschually" me. Just making that clear yk.
