With a standing army of 75,000 soldiers, the British army would have been unable to fight the battle of Bakhmut, not just because it would have ran out of ammo with weeks (MoD's own admission). War has come to the European theater once more, and only a standing army in the hundreds of thousands like we had in the Cold War, is going to be anything other than a well trained speed bump. But you cannot have that without being prepared to pay for it, and there just seems to be no appetite for it. So just as we were in the 1930's, we'll just have to hope the war in Ukraine, middle east and East Asia do not escalate, because that went so well last time of course...
25% of the army is logistics not included other supporting regiments like the REME, RMP and AGC, we have actually 30-35,000 infantry fighting troops, simply not enough.
Well said. The difference between 1930s and 2020s. GB has no military industrial complex left to fall back on, to mass produce weapons. We now assemble weapons of former enemy countries and think it's enough. Bloody fools!
75,000? Even Govt inflated figures aren't that deluded. There are currently less than 62,000 in what was the Army. It's realistically more like 57,000. The Reserves are a set of figures that are less reliable than the actual dole scroungers and walte mittys it allegedly employs. There are less than 14, 000 infantry. In a near peer conflict the attrition rates are between 3,000 and 4,500 dead each month. Within 2 months the Regular British infantry would be combat in effective.
