I have no idea why your not a superstar on youtube........i have learned things i didnt even want to learn about....im arkansas bread and raised.....you have a fan here son....Git R Dun
You are the only video that explained about true top dead centre and overlap and I looked for days. Your video gave me the knowledge to properly adjust my valves (2004 XR400R). Thanks.
Thanks for the video. I'm trying to get a 1981 xl185s up and running, and the Haynes manual doesn't give a great description of this process. This video really shows what to do.
D-Ray thanks again for the refresher course in 2020. Great video. Keep making them lot of us need it and enjoy your work and efforts. Just wanted you to know from the TH-cam gang.
Great tutorial! My wife just got one this past year and we've been loving it. Also don't forget to check your decompression play as well. Not really a big deal, but just while you are at it.
I just recently acquired an xr 500 and there is a ticking sound coming from it I’m am going to try to adjust the values back to factory to see if it fixes it! Great videos thanks for the help!
Yep, looks like new cam and rockers are in your future man. It would also be a good idea to flush out the crankcase, oil tank, and check the primary strainer screen when you replace your valvetrain parts. Don't want any debris from those worn parts scratching up the new ones. Let me know how your project turns out.
I watched your video, and yep, it's noisy! lol Try adjusting the valves, if it is still noisy, you probably have either a worn out cam chain, or wear on the cam and rocker/sub rocker arms.
Really liked your video and learned something new about rockin the valves to see if it’s on top dead center. Just goes to show you you can learn something new even at 75 years old. I have one question though I have adjusted the valves And now the bike is hard starting any ideas would be appreciated thank you.
Snap on makes a valve lash adjusting tool in 10mm and 12mm sizes..It makes the job go alot easier. I used them when I was a Honda tech. Check with your snap on dealer. Great video by the way..Take care.
Good video with good close up! I would only suggest that you crank the engine counterclockwise to not loosen up the flywheel bolt. The way you re-tighten the lock nut is just how I do it. Do you know if the '85 XL350R also has a 'T' mark? I can't seem to see one. Take care
I actually have the factory Honda version made by kowa-seiki, but since these vids are aimed at the do-it-yourselfer I try to use regular hand tools when possible. Thanks for th' info bro!
i'm thinkin of buying a xr 500 r 1985 that doesn't run...cause well thats what i can afford ..all this stuff is very helpful ..i've done most of this b4 but rebuilding the forks and little things like witch way the oil filter goes in and the clearances on the valves are very helpful....i bought a cr 250 in boxes with a book and a new sleeve put er together and got 2000 out of it ...2nd gear didn't work and power valve and cylinder was worn out..any knowledge is useful thanks for posting
great video and fast to the point. do you know how what the spec is on a 1983 xr 350? and how to take off the cam chain tensioner? so i can time my bike correctly
awesome stuff ! I just got an XL600r same year. Having some backfire issues and its having a hard time running. I've cleaned the carbs tob to bottom, and hoping to check the valves soon. is it recommended to do this with the engine fully cold ?
D-Ray! Great videos! Got a couple questions for you. Thinking of purchasing a non-running 1984 XL600R. Firstly, what would be a fair price for one? Seller wants $1000. Supposed to be in good shape, 24k miles. Engine rebuilt by previous owner. (not sure if that's good, or bad) The seller says it has no spark, so it won't run. Tough to diagnose through a post, but any idea if it's a simple electrical thing (coil, relay, or such), or could it be a nightmare and money pit chasing the problem. You're input would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!
Just watching the xl600r valve timing video. And was wondering once you've found your tdc doyou just adjust the exhaust valves and return the crank to adjust the inlets. Or do you find true tdc and adjust al four valves.
D ray I tried this because the motor is noisy I really tried alot to get the flywheel cover off so I could turn it manually really couldn't so I used the Kickstart to turn it which was a huge pain my 87 xl600r valves look different then your video I tried adjusting the rear valve but didn't seem right so I tried putting it back where it was put the bike back together now it runs like crap. Any advice would be greatly appreciated! I was thinking of getting a manual impact hammer to try and get that cover off so I can turn the flywheel.
Hey, I know this video is old, but it's very helpful. Is there any chance that handy little book of yours tells you the valve spec for a 83 xl250? If it does I'd be really grateful. I've been looking everywhere and cant find it and I dont want to pay $100 for a manual that I'll use the one time. Thanks

This video will never die.
Want to know why? It's a Honda, they keep going with basic maintenance like this 😊👍
I love it, thank you. A nice guy, direct and to the point without a bunch of nasty-assed loud music. Perfect!
You are the only video that explained about true top dead centre and overlap and I looked for days. Your video gave me the knowledge to properly adjust my valves (2004 XR400R). Thanks.
Great job my friend! Unlike most videos where you can't see what the person's doing, the lighting in your video made that possible. Thanks.
Love these XL600 videos. You present the information in a nice timely manner and it is all easy to follow! Thanks for making these. Great job!
Micah Bearden Thanks for watching!
Thanks for the video. I'm trying to get a 1981 xl185s up and running, and the Haynes manual doesn't give a great description of this process. This video really shows what to do.
Perfect camera angle for the close up shots!
You make taking those plugs out look easy. I've spent hours and only got one of em out.
Best bike tune vids on here DRay, the close-ups are key. Your vids are going to save me lots of $ and the joy of the experience of course lol.
D-Ray thanks again for the refresher course in 2020. Great video. Keep making them lot of us need it and enjoy your work and efforts. Just wanted you to know from the TH-cam gang.

i found the the tdc tip really helpful, not that many videos that show you clearly
Thanks D-Ray. With any luck I just might have this bike back together soon. I have been dragging this out for 2 years.
Thanks for the video tip especially about the full rotation off. I was wondering why my feeler gages would not fit. Thanks again.
Great tutorial! My wife just got one this past year and we've been loving it. Also don't forget to check your decompression play as well. Not really a big deal, but just while you are at it.
finally a guy that knows what hes doing. great video.
These are great Videos, keep em coming. You did forget to mention however leave the beer drinking until the valve adjustment is done!
Thanks for the tip and show D. Jobs like this are a lot easier for me when I can see it done by someone else.
I wish you would show the decompressor adjustment too - manual tells me I'm supposed to do it, when adjusting the valves.
Your videos are very informative and on the money for what I'm doin on my 1985 xl600. hope you continue with videos on the xl600.
I just recently acquired an xr 500 and there is a ticking sound coming from it I’m am going to try to adjust the values back to factory to see if it fixes it! Great videos thanks for the help!
Hi D-Ray and thumbs up to and your work! I'm building a scrambler out of an XL600R -83 and your vids have been of great help during the assembly!
Thanks for kind words, I do enjoy makin' these vids.

Thank You Mr. D-Ray Smith :-) You teached me to adjust valves by myself in a very easy explanation.
I watched your video, and yep, it's noisy! lol Try adjusting the valves, if it is still noisy, you probably have either a worn out cam chain, or wear on the cam and rocker/sub rocker arms.

D-Ray, thanks for the videos. I will be doing my valves and fork seals hopefully this weekend with your help and my manual.
Thank you for this video, my Clymer manual was confusing me with too many details.
Thanks for putting these videos out there. Top notch.
