Miss your how to videos buddy. You really were one of the best ones. Revisiting this video again yrs later and got me right where I wanted. Hope your doing well.
Great that you describe the choke circuit difference in the carb bowls. I looked at mine couldn't tell which was which and the manual didn't specify. Thanks!
There are 2 studs that are mounted on the seat base near the rear of the seat. They go thru the frame and rear fender. Look under the rear fender toward the front of it, you will see 2 6mm nuts. You will also need to remove the side covers and the strap that goes over the seat. Hope this helps.
Your XL600R videos are great, DRay. The production quality and information conveyance is as good or better than instructional videos for other bikes I've paid money for. I'm freshening up my original-owner 1983 XL600R and these are way valuable to me. I'd like to see the electrical system work video. Thanks.
Thanks D-Ray Smith Sir, Exactly what I needed to feel confident about buying a 83 XL 600 R from a local guy sitting in his barn for 30 years 8000 miles looks like new but runs rough . A lot of other videos out there that skip over the steps making them just a show and tell version of face book . I guess their cool but no use to me . God bless .
Thank you. Im gonna do this very soon as the one i had wont allow me to have any throttle only choke. It just drowns with air it sounds like when i give it gas. I was happy the video was just 9 minutes, but im sure its gonna take me a hole day.
D-ray,you do a real good job explaining what your doing very easy to follow.kinda like my uncle...ol uncle d-ray sounds pretty good.thanks uncle d-ray .
on the removal of the airbox, three screws on the air box cover, and I found another bolt on the right hand low side holding the airbox as well, making a +1 to your count. That being said you have done the best job so far, other videos presume that saying abracadabra will get the carbs out... but then mine is a 1987
Great, easy to understand videos. I own the 1986 XL600R and take it to the high altitudes of Colorado. I bought it from a person that had it re-jetted for that area and I would like to see a video on how to change the jets in the carbs for 600 feet altitude. I have done this on some other bikes in the past and would like to know the tricks you can pass on for this bike.
Great video, saving it for later... I am thinking about buying this bike, but heard they don't idle too well from factory - i hope this will be the solution
I havent worked on an '83 in a long time but if I remember right the low speed circut should be on the left carb, the right carb has only a main jet. if so, the mixture screw should be on the left side.
D-Ray, big thanks for the video. I have the same bike D-ray is tuning up in this clip. Here is a tip: Follow D-rays advice on loosening up the air box, on a 1986 it will scoot back about an inch. Fully remove the air box manifold pipe clamps . The air box rubber manifolds are quite flexible and without the clamps on can be wedged fully out of the way. Once they are out of the path of the carburetor follow the exit path D-ray uses in this clip and you will slide her right through.
Well the 87 version of this bike has an extra bolt under the battery so the box doesn't slide back unless that comes out. unfortunately that bolt broke lose and is spinning and not coming out so I bailed on pulling the carb cuz the rubber manifolds on the intake side of the carbs were separating from the air box and that's not good:)
Having a hell of a time removing the air box but guess I don't need to fully also don't have a canister thing is that bad? Please don't no if d ray will respond
boulderblake dude tell me about it had a fuck of a time getting off the air box guess i didnt fully need to and that bold underneath it with the wierd nut forget about it lol and i also screwed up my intake thing bummer!! Don't have 1 of those canisters he points at is that important
I got the bolt by the Battery to come off and that provided the amount of room I needed to get the carb off without pulling off the air intake rubber. I cleaned and rejetted the carb and had to seal the rubber air pieces back. All in all it was a pain in the ass because I didnt know there was a third bolt. I looked at the video again and i figured the bolt from D-Rays bike was missing before he got it:)
+boulderblake would you be able to give me any info on were all the hoses go on the carb? the only one I have is from fuel tank to to carb all other hoses are missing do they matter ? there are a lot of little openings on the carbs. any help would be appreciated
Friendly reminder, a set of JIS (Japanese Industrial Standard) screwdrivers will make this job *A LOT* easier. Any screw with a dimple on it IS NOT a phillips, it's JIS.
I learned something new. It seems the 83 duel carbs are different the 86 carbs. I have everything back together and came across this video and thought I would double check my work. In the video I noticed something I don't remember doing which was the "low speed mixture screw". It wasn't even in my manual which covered years from '79-'90. Tore everything back out and discovered that I don't have one. I few more beers and I was ok. Its how you learn. I would love a video on how to install and adj the throttle cables. Its , for some reason , a real bitch for me. haven't gotten it right yet. The carb bowls on the 83 are different also, they are identical. Thanks D-Ray your videos have been a lot of help. 2 years and I almost have it back together.
For anyone that's reading the comment above, the 1983 model didn't have the low speed mixture screw. Anything later then that did, so don't worry if you haven't got one. You shouldn't if you have the stock Keihin PH60 Carburetor.
I have an 83 with a low speed mixture screw. But it’s on the side where the gas goes in instead of on the bottom. I am replacing it with a carb from an 86 though, i’ve heard the design is better
Nice video your very good of explaining how it work's. My 1987 xr600r wont start without pulling it with somthing. Then somtimes it wont start just hit an when I pull choke cable it die's I have no idea what is wrong I have had it to everyone in WV! An spent countless dollar's everything seems to be right plugs etc. an when it runs It runs great but heaven forbid you turn it off. better have a truck or something to pull it with. Any ideas on what I should try?
Great video, very informative and well worth watching as I did this job this afternoon. Just rebuilt my XL600R - hopefully roadtest tomorrow ! Thanks once again.
Hello I love your videos! I have a 85 xl and I need to check my carbs! What's the best solvent to clean the carbs with? Also I notice the carb kits on eBay have so many parts with the kit, should I just change out what you did in your video?
I just want to say D ray that your videos are fantastic, your instructions are really clear and you really know how to edit. I watched a few of the other videos you made just because they're enjoyable to watch. I have an XR650L now and if you did a video on one of those that'd be very cool there's a few things about the bike that my clymer doesn't in depth enough. I think you could make full videos about tear downs as opposed to books like clymer that'd be the greatest thing since valve springs.
I have a 1985 xl250r and some times when I start the bike or have been going past half throttle the idle speed spikes when I'm sitting stopped with the clutch in or in neutral.
Good morning. You video has been very helpful. I just bought my 1986 XL600R and the carbs appear to be different from the ones in your video. I don't have a low mixture screw and i have an orange plastic shroud on one of the pins. The bike runs but sputters so I assumed dirty carbs. I'm trying to purchase a low mixture screw, is it possible it goes by another name?
I have a 1987 xl250 dual carburetor, and I believe it's similar to the xl600...I'm not sure how where the hoses go, and where they connect. Is there a video for that somewhere, because I can't find it. Thanks.
Hey D-Ray, again. Thanks for posting good vids about our thumpers. I just did a carb rehab as you describe here but seem to have too many vacuum tubes. No diagrams anywhere??? I know it's a rookie mistake. Bike has been sitting for years. Can you help?
Thanks for detailed video My xr500r as open throttle its not accelerate as i want its like something clogged. That happened after i overhaulin the carburator. Change seals clean both carbs Any idea whats wrong?? Thank you
Hi D-Ray Smith, I bought my 1984 Honda XL600R some years ago and that I have been running the bike without the breather separator and canister. I noticed these 2 items on the diagram of the various Honda XL600R models. Are these items that important for me to consider buying if still available?
Hey, thanks for the explanation! Unfortunately my two carburatos open right at the same time, there gradual opening between first and second one. Do you know if that's a big issue?
It's runnin pretty good considerin how long it's been sittin and the fact you have only done some basic carb work on it. Well done mate, look forward to the next installment. Cheers n regards
DRay, great video, wish I had looked this up yesterday before I pulled my carb's off the very same bike. Where can I get one of those fuel mixture screws? I broke mine and cant find an OEM replacement!
I need to ask (4:31) are all the years of the XR600R equipped with this carb? I don't have that mixture screw on my carb. Wondering if it's suppose to have it. It does not look threaded. I've been going over every nut bolt wire and cap trying to figure out why my bike does not run. And if it's missing, how do I get another, and other small parts to the assembly?
Im considering buying my friends xr600r 94. Non of us knows anything about bikes/600r, but it has earlier gotten its dekomp system removed, and its now just sitting since my friend cant start it. Should i buy a full dekomp system and put it back original, and where can i get this? I know lawnmotors and 50cc, but this thing and system is above my knowledge right now. Any tips my dear pro’s?
So i have a similar bike. I am all of a sudden having a leak in the carbs with gas. What is the common problem and how would you fix it? I really dont want to pay for it and would rather learn myself! Thanks!
Your vids are awesome. I'm from central arkansas. You work on stuff for the public or just friends and relatives? My 400ex could really use a top end rebuild! Lol I like your thoroughness
Hey D-Ray. I have the exact same 1986 XL600r bike. The carbs i believe were tuned to my home town. I recently moved over the mountains where the elevation was alot higher. D Ray, I am working on a 1986 XL600r. Used this video to help me rebuild the right carb. The left carb is brand new as I had to replace it because the tabs that linked the carb together were broke. Thanks for the informative video. About to tackle the dual carbs set-up on my 87 Xl250r. Lots of helpful info
Awsome... I did this job on my 1985 XL250, you make removing the carb look easy. Even with the aix box backed off it is a real pain.
Thanks D-Ray Smith Sir,

best informed carburetor job i ever seen my hat off to you sir
well informed.should be a teacher
You will need to replace the mixture screw to be able to get the idle mixture right. Thanks for watchin'!

Same here!! 😁😁

Awesome d-ray thanks for helping out with our ol honda thumpers.
Great Video and detail - Sure would like to know if anyone just sells the bowl gaskets as that is the only issue I have on my 87 XL600r.
Thank mate just got myself a xr 600 83 model will need to do this. Thanks for info

The only way to get that little o-ring from Honda is to get a carb gasket set (16010-MG2-305), Suzuki offers that o-ring seperately, (13295-26E00)

great vid. i think i may have bowls on the wrong sides as my choke is no good.
Great video, i think there's loads to explore when it comes to the right adjustment
Thanks for a great video, where did you buy the rubber gaskets for the bowls?. Can see the new you put in got a ring/circle and the old dont. Cheers

Big thanks Mr D Ray! Saved me a bundle hauling this thing to the dealer!
thanks for making this video. you do a great job explaining things. subscribed!
Great video...now I am not afraid to pull those suckers and give them the attention that is needed. Thanks again!
I have a 1985 xl250r and some times when I start the bike or have been going past half throttle the idle speed spikes when I'm sitting stopped with the clutch in or in neutral.

Great video. The boots are hard to find, any tips on where to get them, or repair the cracked ones I have?
where did you buy your rebuild kit because all the ones I can find come with the wrong float bowl gasket, they don't have the circular part.
Hey DRay! Awesome videos. Thanks! Any chance you have a video of how to replace a head gasket for the same bike / an XL 500R?
That would be awesome!
It's runnin pretty good considerin how long it's been sittin and the fact you have only done some basic carb work on it. Well done mate, look forward to the next installment.

The bystarter (choke) wont work. Other than that, it will run just fine
Really helpful video, thanks a bunch for uploading!
Im considering buying my friends xr600r 94. Non of us knows anything about bikes/600r, but it has earlier gotten its dekomp system removed, and its now just sitting since my friend cant start it. So, if I were to lube my throttle cables, I wouldn't need to remove them from my bike?
@D-Ray Smith, how exactly did you clean the carb passages and the rest of the carb? Thanks!
thanks d ray, can you tell me where i can get this exact kit from, I'm in the uk and have problems getting this kind of thing.thanks paul
Crank case ventilation canister don't have 1 is that bad?
So i have a similar bike. I am all of a sudden having a leak in the carbs with gas. What is the common problem and how would you fix it? I really dont want to pay for it and would rather learn myself! Thanks!
Thanks for help.you are great!
Greets from germany!
Good job! I'm surprised you got it running so easily.
Your vids are awesome. I'm from central arkansas. You work on stuff for the public or just friends and relatives? My 400ex could really use a top end rebuild! Lol I like your thoroughness
Awesome work and vid. Very cool carb.
What an awesome video, Thank you!
hi d-ray love the video but my carbs are still leaking from the vent tub on the side of the left carb any ideals what that could cause that thanks
Thanks for watchin', yes I do work for th' public, I am about to officially open for buisness soon. Have a goodun'!
Any Idea's why this bike runs like it is vapor locking when it gets hot outside?? It happens bout the time the second carb kicks in?
Hey D-Ray.
I have the exact same 1986 XL600r bike. The carbs i believe were tuned to my home town. I recently moved over the mountains where the elevation was alot higher. It seems to be okay but the idle is low now. I rode up a fire road that was a aditional 6000 ft. yesterday and the bike stalled and i couldnt start it til i coasted to the bottom. I have never tuned carbs before but i understand how they work. Is it possible to adjust them without taking everything apart?
Thanks- Mat
Hey man got some questions
Sweet maybe you can put my 400ex in your video for "how to do a top end rebuild" that would be awesome. Talk at ya later
Thanks! more to come.....
Hi Ray, nice work! where did you find the new carb joint ? thanks
I sell a oem style replacement fuel joint for 30 bucks It is a direct fit, does not leak, comes with O rings. it is of much better quality than the one Honda no longer produces. www.ebay.com/itm/1985-1987-Honda-XR600R-XL600R-Fuel-joint/253534641306
Wanda says I "live" out there now! lol! Thanks bro.
I have problem with my xl . If engine is cold i must started engine without choke before engine can t start . If i switch on choke when engine is running engine go off . When engine is hot and i choke switch on engine go to high rpm . sry my English is bad .
Did you replace the rubber washer on the low speed mixture screw and if so where did you find it please.
Thanks
Pete
Hey DRay I was cleaning my carbs and pulled out the smaller low speed mixture screw to clean the tip and it was so old it just snap right off,can i just turn it in closer?
D-Ray i need some help. i did what you showed on my 86, it only runs on full choke but idles. dies if i let off and dies if i give it throttle. ive been told that the problem is most likely the pilot jet(s). got any ideas? thanks
THANK you, great run-thru!
Naw, it did'nt smoke a bit, I was a lil suprised myself!
Hello.i have XL 600 1986.settings jet main 0ne carboletor and jet main two carboletor.and jet slow. Adjust
great vid
Sounds like Kenny Powers is working on this carb
D Ray, I am working on a 1986 XL600r. Used this video to help me rebuild the right carb. The left carb is brand new as I had to replace it because the tabs that linked the carb together were broke. Still have a serious problem with the bike hicupping and stalling. Do you have any idea what would cause that?
Thanks again for your videos. They have helped me tremendously on this bike.
Mine does exactly the same Michael, did you ever figure it out?
Thank you sir!
so interesting. Im about to buy one next weekend and im intrigued by the style of this. Do these bikes have decent power ?
so how is the bike?
A good work, I'll keep your tutorial in mind since I have one of those bikes (the LM version) and, someday, I should try to clean those carb.
Just for curiosity, have you sold the bike or are you using it for fun in the fields?
P.s. I appreciate your patience in explaining slowly while filming the procedure, since I'm not very familiar with Arkansas accent: not with any US accent, in fact :)
If you had the bowls backwards what would it do?
Humble, I have the same bike and same problem. Did the carb service fix this problem?
Привет. Какой расход у Вас?
EXCELLENT VIDEO
very nicely done, but a suggestion - especially when showing small parts and 'nooks and crannies' watch out for your hand shadow - good light brings out detail that gets concealed with shadow.
Amazing
Choke is stuck . Know any tricks
Thanks bro!
hey, i have the same bike. how do you remove the seat on this bike? i cant figure it out.
Where can i find the carb rebuild kit
Thank, i found the problem thanks your video
Ok, thank you
thanks mate
