I like old bikes, currently restoring a honda ns250f 2 stroke v twin from japan. Seeing this xl600 reminds me of the era. Keep up the good work ❤.
I owned that exact bike in 1983 (when i was 33) ! It is an impressive wheelie and stoppie bike. I remember sitting at a traffic light, when it turned green i would pull a wheelie in first gear, and then without dropping the front wheel, i would just row through all the gears until i was in 5th. So when i finally dropped the wheel it would screech and smoke just like a plane landing cause it was never spinning the whole time 😁. Excellent review, loved the flip flop starts, the highway acceleration and the c-o-n-f-i-d-e-n-c-e 👍 Ken, on the Hudson River
Did anyone notice that as soon as the kick start was coming up she did the toe kick to fold it backin. She has obviously started this bike many times. She was completely confident that it was going to start.
Thanks for showing us one the best vintage Honda dual sports, I have one just like it.....a 1983 XL600R with 6k miles on it. Bought it last year with 4200 miles.
She’s an absolute beauty! My first motorcycle, my dad bought for me when I was 9 years old, was a 1976 Honda Elsinore MR50, and that’s where it all began. My older brother got the Elsinore 125, the dual sport version. There is nothing like a vintage Honda, especially the dirt oriented ones. I wish I still had every old Honda I ever owned. I would have my own little museum. Lol...
Enjoyed the video, especially the decompression start, how that works. You showcased the bike well, my first few bikes were all Hondas, love the vintage ones too.
Nice retro memory for me, thanks. Bought an '83 new and enjoyed it for a few years before going back to a dirt bike (XR350R). Wish I had kept it, but have chosen to have 1 bike at a time. Rode it to Calico ghost town and hit the sandy trails and camp before heading back to the OC many times
Great Bike! I´m currently traveling from Germany to Japan on mine. Never let me down so far and got me out of some pretty nasty situations. Always starts on the first kick if i ride her everyday. If I dont she gets a bit huffy :D
Great video, love the feel of the RFVC line of motors, the 650 is my favorite ever ! I currently ride a DR650 too, would love to see a video of yours and have your opinion on it
Awesome bike!! Super simple and bullet proof. I'm a Honda guy to the end of my time on this planet. I bought a 1983 Honda XL250R brand new in Feb 1984 and still own it. I love it and ride it often with over 13,000 miles. It struggles on the highway but kicks ass off road with the sprocket combination. I really struggled back then deciding between the 250 and 600 and finally settled on the 250 for the type of riding I did back then, 99.9% offroad. I often wondered if I should have bought the 600. A few years ago I added a 2018 Honda XR650L and it's awesome off road and on. I love the acceleration and the low end torque. I've taken it on a couple backcountry discovery routes which were spectacular. I don't think I'll ever get rid of either one.
Great memories watching your video! Thanks for sharing and keep the content coming. I grew up learning how to ride on a Honda (1974 XL 70) and later in life a CBR 1000. I recently acquired a vintage 1985 XL 350R from my friend that has been sitting in his shop for many years. I brought it back to life and look forward to riding it on the dirt trails and around town this Spring/Summer. Cheers!
If no one mentioned it already, when it floods out, hold the compression lever down(if you have one on the handle bars like mine did), hold the throttle wide open and kick it over about five times (it won't kick back as long as you're holding the compression release). Then start it normally. Mine wasn't near as pretty as yours.
"oh, this is where you put the oil because it is a dry sump" Love that you know that and causally say it like you understand it as well. Fun review of a part of motorcycle history.
It wasn't a motorcycle but I learned how to navigate a manual transmission on a 80's Honda 'Big Red' three wheeler. I'll always have a soft spot for a reliable Honda. Great video!
I have had good performance, 55-60 MPG, with significantly more comfortable riding with a 39 rear sprocket versus the stock 43, while I switch to a 13 front sprocket for dirt riding and use the stock 15 tooth for street. I got my 1983 XL600R in early fall of 1983 and recently finished my 2nd overall of it. Still original piston and crank, but replaced cam, camchain, and various bearings and seals of course. Have a trip planned for this summer to visit a friend in Colorado, which is about 1100 miles east and may make it down to visit friends in Arizona, depending on how it goes. No long trips like this in over 20 years as the bike sat for years needing repair when I was working in Alaska but now am retired from toiling near the tundra. Starting this bike for me is not as easy as it looks for you, but if I kick it over about 5 times with compression release and then choke for 1 kick and IF no start then OFF with choke and kick, it usually starts with 2 real kicks. Yes, it floods easily and so usually only one kick with choke on. Use Shell Rotella 15W40 full synthetic T6 Diesel oil. Aftermarket front fender helps give better cooling to engine and better stability at higher speeds. No top speed test yet since my recent overall, but it will maintain 90 MPH OK for a time and will see at some point its top speed. I used to get some instability at around 80MPG but with better balanced tires and the new front fender that doesn't flop about as the original, it is now stable at 80-90 MPH. Do have a small windshield on it with bags on the side and a locking box on the back. I can go grab a fair amount of groceries with it, and it will haul enough to make for decent camping when traveling. My friends with motorcycles in the past no longer ride, but I will visit with them at times, or those who are still among the living, non-LOL.
Next to my first motorcycle (1970 CT70) my 1983 Honda XL600R was the best! I bought it from San Clemente Honda July 5th 1983 for $2599. I named him Gandalf and had the supertrapp like this one and the /cycle World mod 3- 1" holes in the airbox cover. I got stationed on Oahu in the Coast Guard and Gandalf was shipped over. !n 1987 I rode the XL to the Drag strip whare I entered a 100 mile endurance race. I had to safety wire my front caliber and oil bolts, remove my lights and blinkers and put street tires on it. I finished 4th overall racing against Yamaha FJ's and Suzuki two stroke Gamma's and such. 5th pinned down the drag strip into a chicane down shift to 3rd and back it into a left hairpin turn....I sold him 2007 with 37,0000+ miles for $1800. I did shed a tear as he disappeared around the corner. Never left me stranded.
I had one back in the 90's I bought used and it was such a fun bike, a two wheeled tank. Never had issues starting it, just released the decompression lever mid stroke and it fired right up...never bothered to find the compression part of the stroke just released mid stroke.
Yup I had a 1983 XL600R. Miss Piggy was her name. You had to know how to start it. I still have a 1985 XL250R with dual carbs. I fired it up last weekend after sitting over the winter. 2 kicks. It ran great all weekend besides the hot soak when we took a rest. I ride kick starts. Main bike is a 2003 XR400R.
1983 Was the one and only year Sweden imported that very model, myself owned a 500 xl 1982, but the electricity was only 6V and it was kind of tricky business to ride it in the dark. Nice Bike😀
I remember looking at a new 86 tricolour with gold rims at my Honda dealer. I was only 17 at a time but I thought it looks so cool. I ended up with a CR 125. I always wanted that 600! Cheers from Canada 🇨🇦

Awesome to see, I grew up in the eighty's on on big Stations (farms) in New Zealand and had access to XL XR's 250's Had to get the Sheppard's to start them for me and it was a long walk if i came off. Had a RM 80 but loved to ride the big four strokes. Love my DRZ now, still look down at my console 🤣 and remember those grunt monsters. Bike looks very clean for a bike as old as me and yup she looks better than me.
I have this exact bike (1984 model) and Love riding it. Mine likes the choke when first starting unless it's really hot outside. I don't use the decompression lever either, just find TDC and kick it like you mean it.
Great bike! I used to have an XR500R which is very similar, but offroad only. Always wanted a dual sport version. I ended up with a DR650, which is also a great bike. My XR definitely had some starting idiosyncrasies but not bad once I got used to it. I liked that it had a much lower first gear than my DR.
@@AnandaNineOne Does your XL have a much lower 1st gear than your DR? I loved that about my XR, but my friends couldn't ride it without dumping it on takeoff! Btw my DR is also a '23. I added an Acerbis tank, skidplate and a lot of other goodies, and eliminated some stuff it didn't need.
It’s a bit lower on the XL, but I can’t imagine it being as low as your XR, since the XL was mainly focused on streets and the XR on off road! They are very similar, my XL and the DR! I love both, but the DR is MUCH smoother 🤣

Cool vid! Lovely Honda! I have a ’83 XL500R since ’92 in Paris Dakar version. Absolutely love it. My daily driver for in town is a red ’84 XL125R, since doing constant wheelies (can’t resist it really) with the 500 will cost me my driver license over here nowadays. I recommend looking at the ’84 XL200R too. It’s light and nimble and drives much better than the XL185S, especially if you are taller. Keep making cool vid’s about these bikes 😊
So cool, and love your helmet. Just bought its little sister, a red XLR 125 😅 To company my 500 XT and my 600 Tenere. To argue a little bit, old chaps will say it’s not a thumper, because the stroke is shorter than the bore. Never mind, who cares ! 😂 Ride safe, cheers from France.
I've owned multiple large-bore XRs, beginning with the first 4-valve 500 (1979). They are great bikes but can be finicky to start when hot (especially if they are modified). I now have an XR650L. I love electric starts! BTW; The RFVC acronym stands for Radial Four Valve Combustion. These have true Hemispherical (HEMI) heads. The valves are splayed (angled) radially in the combustion chamber. I guess one could also say that RFVC stands for,,, Real Funny Valve Cover. CHEERS!
My name is Gunnar, and i like trouble as well. I had your bikes babybrother in 1991, a Honda MT5. It always flooded. I laughed so hard of your video on Facebook, to understand that joke fully you'll need to have had a Honda bike that floods.🙂
@@AnandaNineOne 😂😂 I understand the struggle, that carburator needs a lot of cleaning. I tried a filter, but it's no fuelpump, so it didnt get fuel to the carb. Your welcome, Ananda.🙂 Full throttle is the only way.😉
That’s a great old bike but so is the XL185. I would probably keep the DR650 and trade the 600 for a 185 as well. I have a KLR650 and a DR250. A DR650 would fit right in the middle, weight and size not power or cc’s. I’m tempted to buy one, but it would need to replace the KLR and I can’t let that go yet. Maybe when I have a bigger garage 😂
@@AnandaNineOne I agree with that 100% but it’s so comfortable and is setup for a lot of secure storage, which makes even heavier and more difficult to use off-road. I’m also holding on to it for longer highway trips but as I get more minimalist with my luggage options I think more about trading for a DR650.
N/B If ever a bike needed an electric start this is it, you can fit the electric start from other XLs & XRs but it is a hassle, battery trays, new stater plates, coils, switch gear etc etc, A firm in Czechoslovakia used to make a kit but they've stopped making them,
I'm actually looking at one now to possibly buy. I started in 82 with an XL250R then moved to steet bikes. Does the front end get light at high speed? The 250 seemed to if I remember right. The older XL500 was a wheelie machine too.
Keep the 600 Get the 185 GREAT VIDEO GREAT VIDEO You seem to have the 600 well in hand, you ride it very well, I’ve seen women riding the XL600R, and most of them put a man to Shame.
The 185 is great, too. Or swap an XL185 or XR200 motor into an SL100. That makes a fun bike. Do you have a windjammer sleeve for your mic? Great video, thanks!
I had a Norton 750 that nobody could start. They asked to ride so I said if you can start it . Nobody ever started it. But my Honda 600 XL was so hard to start, sometimes even I couldn't ride it.
Cool! I think your choice of 185 is good. I don’t like new ones because they run too lean and overheat as a result of stupid emissions laws. BTW, where are you originally from? I’m guessing from your accent.

Guide times! All things being equal your motorcycle is definitely worth more, because it is more expensive to begin with. However, value and trade are subjective.
@AnandaNineOne Honda CB330F is a good city motorcycle to checkout. Good deals to be had, too. I think the riding experience and geometry give it a sum greater than its parts. Thank you for the video. Be safe with all the nutters out.
If you trade that 600 go with the 250 over the 185.. I grew up with these bikes here in the US.. although the 185 is a good bike the 250 is so much better and easier to find parts for.. that's my 2 cents
Thank you for the input, man! You are right. I went to look at the 185 yesterday, and it’s not as clean as I thought it would be. Also, the speedo was changed and the actual mileage is unknown. I would have to spend some money on it for sure… so I’ll just keep mine for now, since it runs so strongly!

I have an '82 xl185s. Can't beat the styling!
Hi. I got a 82 500R. I love and enjoy riding her. Not very fast but I'm fine with it. Got enough power. Thankx for a review
I had an '87 in the red, white and blue colors. Loved it. Trying to buy an '83 right now.
Just bought an ‘85 with a supertrapp as well! Super super fun bike!
It really is!
Nice, i had a 1985 xt600 Tenere in NYC, Urban DS!
Lol "Again For The Ones In The Back".
I like this Chick shes a no nonsense speaker. I'd ride with her anyday. And she knows her bikes. Great vid.
Me encanta, qué buen video, tengo una azul del 87, y al principio sufría para arrancarla. Gracias.
Adorei o capacete e a musica! Grende moto tambem!!
CHEERS!
my father used to own one of that mc! its a beautiful machine!
She’s beautiful indeed. Very reliable and solid!
Super cool supertrapp 🔥 Such a rad bike, worthy of a rad rider!
Oh Hi my love! I love you ❤️
I love watching you kickstarting 🙏🙏🙏
I have an 82 250 r , it is a blast scooting around town.
Love this!! Keep it up!!
run xt600's here, similar in a lot of ways, mine have leccy start though
My name is Gunnar, and i like trouble as well.
I had your bikes babybrother in 1991, a Honda MT5.
It always flooded. I laughed so hard of your video on Facebook, to understand that joke fully you'll need to have had a Honda bike that floods.🙂
🤣🤣
I’m glad you understand the struggle, Gunnar! Thank you for your comment!
@@AnandaNineOne 😂😂
I understand the struggle, that carburator needs a lot of cleaning. I tried a filter, but it's no fuelpump, so it didnt get fuel to the carb.
Your welcome, Ananda.🙂 Full throttle is the only way.😉
Very clean bike what tires are on the bike?
I like the bike, your presentation and your style.
I think I will make the same video ahah each experience on this motorbike is a nice to have ! 😅
For sure she is looking better them me! hahaha
PS: Adorei o seu capacete!
Muito obrigada 😁
I still have an '83. Great bike with a few upgrades.
My 1992 XR250L would look great next to that!
I love the KLR, but it’s a little too heavy for my taste! 😂
Lovely video ananda, i have a 1984 xl 600, love it
Cool bike and rider suits you great description for starting her too
Great urban bike enough torque to get you of any situation, and very nimble to filter in traffic
I have one of those as my daily driver. 😊❤
That's awesome!!
"Again for the ones in the back......." haha, love it.
🤣🤣
N/B If ever a bike needed an electric start this is it, you can fit the electric start from other XLs & XRs but it is a hassle, battery trays, new stater plates, coils, switch gear etc etc,
A firm in Czechoslovakia used to make a kit but they've stopped making them,
Grande moto e belo vídeo! O ronco dela é bom demais!
I'm actually looking at one now to possibly buy. I started in 82 with an XL250R then moved to steet bikes. Does the front end get light at high speed? The 250 seemed to if I remember right. The older XL500 was a wheelie machine too.
Def a very peppy machine!
Great frank review - thanks 🙏🏻
beautiful combo
Great bike, pretty cool!
Are you brz?
Keep the 600
Get the 185
GREAT VIDEO GREAT VIDEO
You seem to have the 600 well in hand, you ride it very well, I’ve seen women riding the XL600R, and most of them put a man to Shame.
The 185 is great, too. Or swap an XL185 or XR200 motor into an SL100. That makes a fun bike.
Do you have a windjammer sleeve for your mic? Great video, thanks!
Just got the sleeve! 🖤
Love the vintage bikes, maybe some 2 strokes coming up?
My two stroke is a 2005 RM250 😅
@@AnandaNineOne now we're cooking, sweet.
I had a Norton 750 that nobody could start. They asked to ride so I said if you can start it . Nobody ever started it. But my Honda 600 XL was so hard to start, sometimes even I couldn't ride it.
RFVC Radial 4 valve combustion….same as my XL 250 and my bros XL 600 a year older than yours. Great machines.
Great machine and video, saludos desde 🇦🇷
Cool! I think your choice of 185 is good. I don’t like new ones because they run too lean and overheat as a result of stupid emissions laws.
BTW, where are you originally from? I’m guessing from your accent.
Omg. I’ve been searching for a senna helmet for ages. 😜
Was that custom made?
Greetings from Australia
Go on Instagram and find a company called “@racehelmet”
They are trustworthy!
Con qué grabas que se ve tan perfecta la calidad de video?
G'day Ananda 😝 Cool video 👍 im new to bike riding & checking out many video's & learning from some good instructors here & there & Came across you just now & now watching your vids ! Anyway i think its great to see you riding & enjoying the bike lifestyle & having fun , steve from Bundaberg Australia 🇦🇺🕺🥤
Aw thank you so much for your kind words, Steve! They are much appreciated! I’m new to TH-cam, but I’m gonna try to keep some consistency! Thank you for the support!
Perfect
ihave a 1984 model same.21 years owner now.
Nice! How do you like it?
its great ive had it so long its a part of the family.i have pics if you need one or two?@@AnandaNineOne
@@AnandaNineOne had it for 21 years so its a keeper.and a part of the family too. had 3 camchains and 4 stators in this time.never uses oil either.done near enough 100000 miles.
Awesome bike
❤
Guide times! All things being equal your motorcycle is definitely worth more, because it is more expensive to begin with. However, value and trade are subjective.
I agree with you! The 185 wasn’t that great, I went to take a look!
@AnandaNineOne Honda CB330F is a good city motorcycle to checkout. Good deals to be had, too. I think the riding experience and geometry give it a sum greater than its parts. Thank you for the video. Be safe with all the nutters out.
Still riding mine, "I like trouble" hahaha.
😂😂
That's the year with duel carbs on it right ?
I like how you call it She... I do the same ;)
If you trade that 600 go with the 250 over the 185..
@@AnandaNineOne my father bought me a yamaha xt200 bran new in 1983..I wanted the Honda xl250r but he thought it was too tall and had more power than I needed.. I was 12 at the time
Lucky kid!
@@AnandaNineOne yes I was blessed.. now I have a yamaha wr250r and a suzuki v strom 800de adventure.. I have a good friend that a mint condition 84 xl250r that just sits and he don't ride it but he won't sell to me either
I have a 2017 Triumph Street Twin, a 2005 Suzuki RM250 two stroke, this honda and a 2023 Suzuki DR650. I have to sell two of them 🤣
Rock and roll!
