He is top 3 or top 4 all time, but people shouldn't ignore circumstances of success. Kareem had 2 years in his career where he didn't play with Oscar Robertson or Magic Johnson.
Imagine if Kobe had played 18 years with Shaq. Or if LeBron 15 years with D-Wade or AD. Or if KD had Steph for 10 years.
You can argue Pau Gasol, Kyrie Irving and especially Russ are great players as well, but it's about 2 all time greats on 1 team. And the Big O and Magic are historically on another level than Gasol, Kyrie or Russ.
If u regard these things, the number of chips gets harder to compare. Even MJ had one of the best small forwards of all time next to him on all six chips. From that perspective, the only thing separating MJ is 6 Finals MVP and his teams never losing in the Finals. And the biggest winner of all time, Bill Russell, had 6 hall of famers on his team.
All in all it feels like MJ is the real g.o.a.t., but as the NBA is 5-on-5 instead of 1-on-1 it's hard to really prove.

Kareem has always been very intelligent, and very cool. He's an intellectual, and he cares. People sometimes forget when Kareem was young. He was unstoppable. The great author David Halberstam called him unbelievably athletic, and 7' 4". Also, remember when Kareem did a Bruce Lee versus Kent Benson? It was short.

I'm a retired peace officer for the US State Department. My post was the Passport Agency in Los Angeles on Wilshire, near UCLA.
Kareem came in that day to renew his passport. When he came back to pick up his passport later that day, I was assigned to accompany him to our VIP waiting area because his passport wasn't ready.
I'll never forget those 45 minutes. I had to ask him what it was like watching Bruce Lee sparring.
He said, "Watching Bruce move was like seeing an alien that wasn't affected by Earths gravity or the laws of physics. He was literally so fast that sometimes your brain couldn't process what it SHOULD have been able to see but DIDN'T ."
I could see him reliving the moments he talked about. It was obvious that Bruce Lee really made an impression on him. He said several times as he had that look of remembering...."I really miss my friend".

The Lee - Jabbar fight is my favorite of all time. It was the best example of how no matter what his opponent’s advantages were, Lee was able to identify and exploit their weaknesses. In this fight, despite Kareem’s height and strength advantage Lee was able to slowly take him down by staying in close and not letting Kareem extend his arms and legs to use his full power.

Kareem is the G.O.A.T for basketball...look at the whole picture when judging who the greatest is/was. Rules changes, length of career,MVP's, scoring record, greatest weapon in sports history (sky hook). Bruce Lee would've been my fathers age (80) & I feel that he was unfortunately 10-20 years before his time...it's unfortunate because also medical science could've diagnosed what killed him better later also & he would be with us today possibly.
