The movie's semantic is not for literally true, but figurative real instead. Every thing happens to real people wasn't historically accurate, whereas every representative of certain people was in the way it was. That's why the movie's name and why it is in an artistic fashion. Because it is a movie about a tragic history and it has to be performed in a Quentin's entertaining way. Therefore when Bruce Lee meets a stuntman played by Brad Pit, Bruce Lee has to lose because it is not historically accurate and Brad's stuntman win because stuntmen are always the true badass. Quentin respects his own movie language, therefore the scene has to go that way, and he did.
Tarantino is a XENOPHOBE with an American superiority complex mixed in, from my brief analysis, that is what's going on.
Him saying Bruce Lee said this and that about the "American" stuntmen when coupled together with his campaign to get rid of non-American actors pretty much exposes what's going on in his head, The dude can't take a foreigner like Bruce Lee (he was born in California but raised in Hong Kong) outshining real 'MERICANS and looked to destroy his image.
This mirrors the struggle of Bruce Lee when he came to America, dealing with American nativist like Tarantino and seemingly, Samuel L.
It just so happens that Tarantino's favorite black person, Sam L, seems to share this Xenophobia with Tarantino, remember when Sam L was going after them black British actors a lil while back. This might be why Sam L and Tarantino are such buddies, Sam L was either always this way or Samuel L adopted it from Tarantino. lol
We ALL Know those masters aren't worth anything they claim to be, too many videos of them getting embarrassed right here on TH-cam. 99.999999% of the so-called masters cannot fight. Too many videos PROVE that.

It's weird tarantino never complained about the money he made using bruce lee's imagery for kill bill, the crazy 87 use masks identical to that of kato, he used the green hornet's soundtrack, uma thurman wore the yellow jumpsuit from game of death, the main characters use the 1 inch punch and on and on, also he never mentioned lee in all of these obvious references he simply stole his imagery to make money.
using inspiration from other icons isnt stealing, its showing respect to what they have given the world. dont think youll be willing to see it that way but go ahead and act like people are just stealing from each other. One inch punch was POPULARIZED by bruce.

I'm just a white guy from the UK who only knows about Bruce from books, magazine's,, watching interviews and documentaries. However, what keeps coming across is what a great person he was who thought a great deal about other people and who wanted to make us better people.

Reading watching interviews and documentaries shows you're FOCUSED and not likely prone to misinformation. Example: One comment said, " Bruce never taught martial arts as an adult" I replied, watch a documentary or read up! Anyway as far as race, I'm Filipino and do Kali. It was the "white guys" that sat me down and went over the drills. The others were more into favoritism and Social Issues. I too had to read and watch interviews.
That is precisely why he is no longer with us. When you don't go along in Hollywood you're out. If they think you'll talk...... You do the math.

I'm a 74 year old Black woman from Chicago. I remember the impact Bruce had on the world of every color. It was amazing just how fast we fell in love with not just the martial artist but the man himself. Tarantino 's movie disrespected Bruce and should be addressed. It's even simpler than that; Tarantino's entire filmography is to shock people with the unexpected and outlandish; it's what made him famous; it's his signature. He just found out the hard way you don't disparage Bruce Lee.
In my opinion, Quentin Tarantino is a great filmmaker, but Quentin is no martial artist, has never met or sparred with Bruce Lee, and should not comment on Bruce's abilities with no qualifications to judge.

It makes me wonder if that was Mr. Tarantino's agenda? Perhaps he portrayed Bruce Lee like that to get a rise to promote his film. Anyone who's did even a little reading on the life of Bruce Lee knows. Still, honestly I didn't like his portrayal. It was disappointing to see my hero portrayed the way he was in that film. I was looking forward to his part in the film since I read that Bruce was a good friend of the actress and showed regret that he couldn't be there to protect her. In any case, Tarantino is a great film maker but this one isn't one I'd watch again.

I was in high school in the 1990s I never got teased for being Chinese at that time I was bullied and regularly physically assaulted over my physical disability my leg was amputated when I was eight due to cancer. I remember watching karate movies with my little brother on the weekends and discovering Bruce Lee. We didn’t know how famous he was. We didn’t know about his popularity. We just fell in love with them. We watched those karate movies thinking Bruce Lee was alive. We didn’t know he had died 10 years prior. When I discovered it, I cried like a baby.
If you don’t think Bruce encountered bias and racism at that time, you’re nuts. To take his memory and his image, and humiliate him at the hands of, what could be, some of the people he suffered those bias from, and some of those struggles. This hurts as a fan.

I remember my ex army dad used to wake me up in the morning to join him for a run and exercise n I’d hate every second of it. After I watched the way of the dragon, my father didn’t have to tell me to wake up early or exercise it became a natural part of life. And this is true to many of the living martial arts legends today. He inspired so many of them like this from the childhood. His best contribution to the world is that he made physical exercise n martial arts look so cool that people would engage in them despite the discipline n labour it requires. Imagine the world of martial arts today without this phenomenon named Bruce Lee! 🎉🤘❤️❤️

Quentin said "Bruce didn't respect American stunt men and was always hitting them to make the fights look real". Half true. Here is the truth. Bruce had no problem with the American stunt men. People get tagged or hit during scenes. Not out of disrespect but to make the hits look real. They were not full force hits. It was the way they filmed in Hong Kong. I saw in interview with Cynthia Rothrock, and she spoke about the differences between American and Hong Kong stunt work.
It really came down to different styles of stunt work. Nothing to do with not respecting American stunt men.

Jackie Chan also said that in Hong Kong they just used to actually hit the stunt men, it happened to Jackie, it happened to Bruce, and it was just a part of the Hong Kong martial arts culture.
Jackie even spoke about how he had to train his own US stuntmen again to bring them up to standard
I am far from a Bruce Lee fanboy but I have seen ple ty of interviews with him and read stuff he said. For what a huge figure he was he never comes off arrogant. He had a lot of ideas and was happy to talk about them when everybody, or a lot of people, wanted to listen. But that is a very natural reaction to suddenly being famous as a young person

All I have to say regarding Quentin Tarantino's ridiculous, untrue and very disrespectful portrayal of Bruce Lee in his film "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood" is that people will never forget Bruce Lee, even after the best of Quentin Tarantino's films are long forgotten. Although Quentin Tarantino has his own unique and remarkable style of filmmaking (and has marked Cinematic History in his own right), he would never have been able to make Kill Bill 1+2 without the strong influence of Hong Kong and Japanese Cinema to Western audiences, of which Bruce Lee was a major part. So, instead of making a mockery of a martial genius icon like Bruce Lee, perhaps Tarantino should be making a "hommage" to him. Although a Filmmaker should have the right to freely express himself within his work, Shannon Lee is absolutely right in defending Bruce's image, not only as his daughter, but also on behalf of the millions of Bruce Lee fans and martial artists throughout the World. Mr. Tarantino, I certainly hope that your next film is better, and definitely more respectful of other Cinematic icons that are eternal, timeless, and much bigger than yourself.....RESPECT!
I was practicing Tae Kwon Do when Bruce was still alive. This version of him is a grotesque parody. Tarantino just lost whatever small amount of respect I had left for him as a man.

I train in martial arts and also coach kids and women in self defense. Martial arts is very useful but that doesn't mean the martial arts are some sacred religion that is absolved from anecdotes or charicature.

It's not about the martial arts is about the portrayal of an actual person and that wrong portrayal can give a false narrative on how someone is in real life. Unfortunately for many people films are things that become the one way people learn things. WWII happens because Hitler put out mass propaganda that the Jewish people are the reason for all of Germany suffering and losing the war and spreads his ideals that only white men and women with blue eyes are the right race and proceeds to send Germany on a road of world domination and mass genocide of the Jewish people. Media is very important the way people are portrayed in media are very important. Understanding the effects of what is shown and what is not shown is very important.
I think Tarantino really screwed up on his representation of Bruce Lee. I'd wish he was smart enough to realize that and man enough to apologize for it.
My friend who was a car-buff said that car he was thrown against would never crumple like it did, as the sheet-metal was very thick and heavy on the real cars back then. Those doors on the Tarantino car must have been made of tin-foil for the scene.

I didn't get into verifying all the stuff cause that's ridiculous. But if something he developed in his narrative is contradicted in the future I'll be much more wary of carrying this narrative ahead.
The essence of documentaries is trusting the creator to give objective data through a subjective lens to save us all the time of having to do the research ourselves. If I didn't trust documentarians because I couldn't verify 100% of the data it would be a waste of time to even watch.

I am old enough to have read the interview with Lee that contains the Mohammad Ali quote that Tarentino misrepresented. I think it was in Black Belt or one of those mags and Lee NEVER said he could cripple The Champ. In response to a question about Ali, what Lee he said was something like 'Ali's fist is as big as my head. I would have to go for his knees.' Now that's not the exact quotes, it's been 45 years or so, but that's pretty close. It was basically a joke. Lee had nothing but respect for The Champ. He would watch films of Ali's fights over and over to study his movements and technique, some of which he would incorporate into his own fighting style. What Tarentino did was utter disrespect and his response to 'suck my....' shows was a classless douche he really is. But, hey, he's done some great films. If not the Lee scene "Once Upon A Time..." would be a fave.

The whole world knows Bruce. His influence is everywhere. Games, movies, tv shows, books, comics, magazines, toys, you name it. And it goes far beyond things that are directly about Bruce. He changed the way so many things were done. If you've ever played a computer fight game you've probably played a character based on Bruce. If you've ever seen fight scenes in films you've probably seen moves and poses influenced by Bruce. He has become immortal. He will be remembered long after Tarantino is forgotten.
Bruce Lee said that he picked up a lot of grappling technique from Gene LeBell. That sounds like a pretty friendly relationship one has with a colleague.
By the time they met, Bruce had trained with many grapplers, from his time in Seattle (19 or so) to his time in Hollywood. Many judo men were, for example impressed that Bruce even knew the names of the Japanese techniques. Of course, it's well known that much of Lee's training with his students was: "Come at me like a boxer, or a grappler, etc."

See my comment above, where heavyweight Joey Orbillo opines that Ali would lose to Lee in a real fight. I always wonder about that Robert Clouse book ... people on the set said Clouse disrespected the martial artists. Robert Wall said he went to Clouse's hotel room and slapped him. Look at Pat Burleson's interviews. At 230 lbs. he said Bruce threw him around with one arm. Look at just for play Joe Lewis grappled Ali to the ground. Or Ali's '[match' with the Japanese wrestler ... Ali's legs were so injured by kicks, he had to spend time in the hospital. If Ali couldn't avoid these 'sport' kicks, how could he avoid a real Bruce Lee kick? As Bruce said to Kareem Abdul Jabbar, "I could break your leg, and there's nothing you can do about it." (Kareem grabbed Bruce in a hug, "I was only joking, Bruce!"

I am old enough and have followed the career of Bruce Lee that he struck me as a humble guy, the way typical martial artists are. I mean if you know you can take life with just your bare hands and you are a human being, it humbles you. I know because my karate teacher also taught the secret service and was a pastor and was very humble. I have never liked Quentin Tarantino movies, they are incoherent. On the positive side of things, I am excited to know that Shannon Lee exists and is out there. It would be an honor to meet a descendant of Bruce Lee.

5:04 Gene Lebell did an interview after that movie came out, trying to shed some light on the truth. Gene said that he unexpectedly put Bruce into a firemans carry or something like that, just playing around, but afterwards, Gene and Bruce ended up training together to work on Bruce's grappling skills because Gene knew Bruce was lacking in that. So, according to Gene LeBell, that scene was very loosely based on the real, playful encounter between Gene and Bruce.

There have been friends of Gene who said he told a lot of untrue stories. For example, Gene said that "Bruce's school in Chinatown had tatami mats and smelled of incense." The real students there said there were no such mats or incense. Also, that Gene and Bruce didn't meet until many episodes after the first Green Hornet, and by that timeline, Gene couldn't have been called in to "teach the new kid some manners." Anyway, please see my comment above on Hayward Nishioka. He was younger than Bruce, and therefore much younger than LaBell ... likely Nishioka was better than Gene in sparring. Numerous close friends, including celebrities described Lee as a fierce and confident person, but also a humble and kind person who treated everyone fairly. This has really profoundly changed my view on Tarantino, not only as a person but also as an artist. Most people I’m sure are aware that the most used adjective when referring to him as a film director, as a praise is always that what sets him apart is his immense knowledge and love of films. Now what most people don’t know is that a lot of what makes his films great, meaning popular and also critically acclaimed, is that he’s used heavily influenced (which is a nice way of saying he has copied the work of giants and pioneers from the European and Asian films industry) by other directors that truly broke molds and introduced new styles, such as French new wave, Italian Neo-realism, as well as their counterparts from Japan and Hong-Kong. Now I truly love his films, and til now, even though I’d been shown these peculiarities about his work, I was the first to defend him, but this is not the first hand account I’ve heard lately of people who’ve met this arrogant and self-centered and grandiose side of him, and coupled with the facts I’d been shown before, does throw and changes my perspective when it comes to his work. Life has a funny and transcendental way of humbling people who act like so, and in his case I can’t help but to remember him at the Oscar’s, when this particular film was nominated, and an Asian film (South Korea’s brilliant “Parasite”)pretty much beat him on almost every single category, and though not explicitly, or even vocally, but I remember the TV cameras would occasionally zoom in on him and I’d get this pissy and petulant vibe every time that’d be so. Now this last thing I can’t be sure of, but pretty much everything else I’ve gone over is factual, so you come to your own conclusion.

I've never taken anything Tarantino has done seriously including the scene in question. To me it's just part of the fairytale that he's weaving and not to be taken literally since none of it is claimed to be historical or biographical. Let’s not forget that Tarantino loves writing the n-word into his movies and often gives himself a reason to say it. Dude’s got some latent racist tendencies, but they’re the kind generally overlooked as reserved for “people from a certain era.” Thing is, though: he isn’t. I think dude’s just got some grievances he gets to air out because he makes interesting movies. He gets a pass, but should he really?
I think this scene is messed up because it tarnishes the image of a dead man, a legend that impacted the world of martial arts, helped gave birth to MMA and combat sport as we know it and had a huge influence on the movie industry as well.
But Tarantino is definitely not a racist.
He used the n-word in Pulp Fiction when he talked to Jules Winnfield’s friend Jimmie Dimmick, a caricature of a character.
Then in Django which quiet literally takes place during black slavery.
It is a bit silly to try to use that to label Tarantino as a “racist”.
He has been casting black actors since the beginning of his career and maintains close friendships with all his cast members.

It's been mentioned more than once that Bruce struggled pulling his punches and kicks during enter the dragon because he was so used to full contact work with the Chinese stuntmen he had worked with in his earlier movies
To this day stunt performers will tell the hero actor to actually hit them when they're rolling cameras. They are tough folks and they want it to look good. They don't make a big deal out of it, it's why they get up in the morning.
And that is the thing right there. It would make sense that in the early beginnings of Bruce working with American stuntmen that they would be hit. And with him being so fast...someone was going to be hit. That in no way means/equates to Bruce Lee having no respect for them.
It's still the same way today that in China and it's safe to say in general in Asian martial arts films that they are done full contact. Jackie Chan's style of film fighting is similar, but to give the appearance of full contact and it can be difficult for Western stuntmen to adapt to that kind of fighting.
It can be said that at least in his Chinese movies, Bruce was very good to his stuntmen. He insisted on having meals with them, and that he not be given special treatment. When he was in Hollywood, Stirling Silliphant hired him as fight coordinator for one of his films in the South (I think Tennessee)... and Bruce "proved" himself to the "two, tough big Caucasian cats" (Silliphant) "after Bruce kicked them into the pool, they came up Christians, and from that time on, they would've killed for him." @@ghost7524

The fact that so many people are upset by the scene just goes to show how loved Bruce Lee was, and is. if I were Quentin Tarantino, I would cut the movie and reshoot that scene giving Bruce Lee the respect and deference worthy of the man.
Tarantino would never reshoot that scene; it was never about entertainment or art or even making money. He's fulfilling a role as one of the media elites, and that is build the people up that they want (that don't look like Bruce) and tear down the people they don't want (that look like Bruce).

Great video! There's a fine line between arrogance and confidence. Bruce Lee was very confident and for good reason - he was the BEST! The way I see it, in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, Cliff Booth is remembering something that DIDN'T really happen. In the beginning of the scene, there's a bunch of people watching the fight. At the end of that scene everyone is gone, meaning there aren't any witnesses to the fight. Cliff is an unreliable narrator and he is looking back on a memory that didn't happen. The reality is that Cliff Booth is not a good guy even though we are rooting for him.
Yeah. Someone can either say they will do better or they'll say that everyone else is just being a whiner. Obviously he's free to do either, but I think less of him for choosing to just be disrespectful. And it kind of shows he was being disrespectful all along to Bruce Lee.

Admittedly, I was one of the few that said it was a dream sequence, because that's what it had appeared to be. In context of his interview with Joe Rogan and the book though, it seems intentional to create some controversey to get people to buy into what essentially was hear-say. The fight isn't what I thought silly though, it was the dialogue prior to it. Respect for bringing clarity to this debate. It's pretty conclusive that Tarantino was looking to knock him down a peg for who knows what reason. Jealousy? Envy? Hate for his ongoing celebrated status? Or to make money? Only he knows the truth.

My personal opinion is that quentin is a deeply disturbed individual. He has made some good movies, but he has made some bad decisions while making his movies as well. Decisions that have detracted from the final product more than once. Jim Brown was supposed to be the actor Cliff fought then he switched it to Bruce Lee. So he wanted to have one of the icons beat up. He knows that if he had used an icon like John Wayne he would have had a problem. If you pay attention to the movie he slid in a lot. He definitely has a problem.
Quentin Tarantino showed how jealousy, in the hands of a millionaire filmmaker, can bend the truth anyway he pleases. But at the end of the day,
Bruce Lee will always be a legend and will be remembered as such, long after Tarantino has kicked the bucket.

Hey buddy, I love your channel. Thanks for putting this out there. I stand by Shannon 100% on this. He was extremely disrespectful in any way and he totally knocked. Bruce purposely for his own strange reasons. Whatever they are I don't know and why anyone would go out of their way to do that is beyond me. But I love Shannon's response to it. It's just like could you either apologize or just stop talking about it and he just can't seem to understand that . I got to hang out with Jim Kelly when he was still alive and I asked him what was Bruce really like fighting wise and Jim Kelly told me this when we did enter the dragon he was phenomenal but when I was just training walking with him learning his philosophy and watching him fight and do different techniques he was like he was untouchable. He was that good. He was the most amazing martial artist and fighter I had ever seen in my life. Fred Williamson said the same thing and these were people that actually trained and knew Bruce. And I know some people are going to be like. Are you saying he's super human nobody's super human but the thing about it is this. Bruce worked very hard. He gave time to martial arts and fighting day in day out when most people are not that disciplined to do that. Bruce was working hard. Three 2:00 in the morning training training training improving, improving, improving improving. That's really the secret. He constantly kept improving like somebody that's really determined to get a PhD and they study all night and study all day. That was Bruce and a lot of people don't have discipline like that so and I can relate. I was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis a year to half ago. I'm still recovering from chemotherapy from a special experiment. They wanted to try on me to improve some things and I'm a martial artist but due to this whole condition and it really messing with my body I have to do things differently. I'm in a lot of pain, but I'm still up training every day 6 to 7 days a week without fail and I'm just determined very much like Bruce Lee just would have been determined no matter his circumstances or situations. And I think that that's what Quentin Tarantino has to understand about people like Bruce or people like myself. Anyway, keep doing what you do. Why are people so upset about a film full of false things, not only the Bruce Lee bit? QT has done this for years.
I was a kid in the 70s and all the kids in my neighborhood loved Bruce Lee and martial arts. I saw the film and I NEVER got offended. You know why? Because it was chock full of revisionist ideas. The Manson family gets killed by a washed up Hollywood actor for Pete’s sake.
So he can do that, but his little fake Bruce Lee bit has to show fake Bruce Lee in a good light?
Like I said, I am a Bruce Lee fan and I was not offended, because I knew the whole thing was revisionist history.

Bruce Lee worked his @ss of to get to the height he achieved both as a martial artist and a film maker/movie star. For someone to come along and totally trash his character, his brilliance is to not appreciate the impact he made.

Quentin is good at making the bad and low down people look cool. The good and kind he spits on them with artistic strokes to make them look like uninteresting geeks. He strips out the very essence of love and respect from life and replaces it with degradation humiliation and perversion but does it in a way which one thinks that to dislike it would be close minded. It’s all part of the program to dumb us up and keep us asleep.
Idolizing is akin to sleeping. Look at how many do this today with celebrity politicians world wide. There are many incredible people who's achievements will be forgotten in time by the masses, yet I cannot think of one great achievement from Bruce Lee. His ego was on full display in the Ip Man films and that's coming from Chinese directors. He fit in well with Hollywood as someone that was arrogant--not at all a bad person but full of himself. As someone else pointed out Muhammad Ali was similarly a big talker but he at least proved himself, until he got put in his place by Frazier anyway.
