I love how you think actual fights are "competition". more like someone trying to take a few swings at a moviestar. it's not like people had smart phones back then to video an altercation.
The fact that you would say that means you simply don’t understand what you see. Remember be like water. So for a movie Bruce did what was necessary to sell the scene. The same applies on “the street” as you say. Bruce would do what necessary on the street. You need to open your eyes and mind my friend .
I would travel to train with Guro Dan Inosanto on occasion while attending various workshops around the country. The volumes of martial arts knowledge stored in that man’s mind is enough to fill a public library! His seamless, smooth movements throughout his demonstration of techniques left me utterly stunned! At his age, he can still outwork the vast majority of people. 🔥🔥🔥
I've been training in JKD for 15 years, and I think it's interesting that ignorant individuals always talk about MMA and how JKD doesn't compare, yet just recently Anderson Silva started training with Dan Inosanto........if you've never fought, trained just shut the hell up.
well said!! !!! I think the ignorance is not limited to this subject either there are alot of haters, trolls, and people who like to bash what they just don't seem to understand (or are jealous of) especially on TH-cam and internet. Bruce Lee's whole aim in his training was to develop as a complete fighter! his philosophy and teaching threatened the traditionalist and angered those who did not wish to break outside of the box. Lee was a fitness fanatic. a training fanatic. A total pioneer and genius of personal growth and development. Thing is that he was an actor and pretty damn exceptional. why? The same reason he is a Legend of the arts. because he was always about being the best at whatever he did. He was a master over his own physical abilities. .. his experience, knowledge, wisdom, will, energy, and strength as a person is nothing but admirable. if MMA was around back then and he wanted to join he would train, adjust to the rules and do what it takes to be on top...period.
Ya bro! I just was at a vid with Chuck Norris hitting "Bob" and talking about Bruce and himself how they would do in MMA and tough guy's were posting tough guy nonsense and saying Bruce would get his ass kicked becuse he wasn't a real fighter and his methods were out dated, bla bla. Funny how people talk shit about the master now that he's dead. Big tough guys, smh.
I just started to train in JKD and this is what I have been learning that was shown in the video, I just want to ask somebody that has been in JKD for a long time if this is how Spike fights. And by Spike I'm referring to Cowboy Bebop I don't know if you have seen that show or not but that is the whole reason why I chose JKD and also the philosophy I agree with the teachings. So if you don't know who Spike is that's okay I just wanted to know if I am really learning how Spike fights because everyone says that Spikes style is JKD. Thanks
Bruce Lee was an innovator, a pioneer, and most of all a warrior. He was so ahead of his time, and although he died young. He left a blueprint for the few of us who wish to expand ourselves through the martial arts.
This video is gold, Dan Inosanto is as humble as they come, I met he and Taky Kimura after signing the Bruce Lee visitors book in Seattle after paying my respects and laying flowers at Bruce's grave. The comment of Bruce and kicks that Inosanto said he seldom used in any of his confrontations unless he was just playing around with the man goes to say Bruce was that good with his hands that he didn't need kicks, his comment also validates that Bruce fought in actual conflicts where people continuously say he never did. Thank you for sharing this wonderful clip.
Bruce Lee started his film career at 10 years old. He wasn't from Los Angeles, but Oakland. He was considered a Master while he was still in Hong Kong. Where he signed with Golden Harvest for lead roles as the sole star in Kung Fu.
Ovo je jedan od videa koji sam imao u svom telefonu godinama pre nego sto sam imao neki koji moze da pristipi TH-cam. Sad ga saljem ljudima u inostranstvu. Ljudima koji su zaljubljenici u borilacku umetnost.
Inosanto is Filipino Kali Master, a close friend of Bruce Lee, they learned each other by sharing their skill.. Kali(Filipino martiam art) +kungfu(Chinese Martial art)..
Reading the comments on this videos makes me happy. People call him "Guro Inosanto" It's the first time that I have seen the word Guro out of my country. I'm sure those people who uses this term, knows what it means, but for those who don't, it mean's teacher in Filipino.
I dont understand what part of it was bulls**t. Inosanto explained it at the beginning. Bruce Lee was looking for practicality not just forms. This would have been early MMA. It NEARLY applies the same logic. I know kungfu is bullsh** btw.
@@executor2056 bruce lee that time is ahead of his time.. imagine having early mma.. what if bruce lee didn't die until this day.. maybe there maybe more advance than mma. I guess mma has its own style while they influence bruce lee jet kune do, come think of it there are mma fighters to day with different main style mix with mma like muay thai to mma.. etc. Just like bruce lee's jet kune do philosophy on that poster "absorb what is useful, reject what is useless etc"
It was very interesting. I loved his explanation on Bruce Lee's mentality on fights for real and for movies. He did say a few things in a rare interview but we have very little left of Bruce Lee talking about his philosophy of fighting in both situations. But, from this video I can see that Dan Inosanto presented the same ideas Bruce Lee said in that one interview, which I saw a couple of times.
Lawrence Lee International (Sydney Australia). Lawrence started Tong Kune Do alias Total Control Systems. His system, his concepts were light years ahead of any fighting art out there. His was truly a legacy. His motto was, "If in trouble learn self defence. If in real trouble learn from Lawrence Lee."
Bruce is still very much living in the life of Inosanto! When he said if you're secure in your knowledge, why hide it...I sware with all of my soul I heard Bruce's voice pierce his vocal chords!
Forgive my ignorance, but as this guy was describing how Bruce developed the system based on various tried and true martial arts and western arts, would JKD be described as the first form of MMA???
I started learning Silat and Escrima in 1993 when I was 16 YO. I had a real all day long practice when I turned 17 I remember. In 2008 I started practicing Taiji, Bagua and Xingyi. I am considering moving back to Los Angeles to learn BJJ and Judo. Right now I am up near Seattle. Bruce and Dan were very helpful. Bruce was my favorite martial artist before Jackie Chan was for me, yo!
Agreed. Every art has something to offer. That was what Bruce realized very quickly. That is why he explored out of Wing Chun and boxing into other arts. Once someone does that they start to see more than the differences in systems but the similarities. That is why it is easy to mistake techniques in the video for only WC and boxing. Dan even adds some Kali at the end which is extremely similar to Wing Tsun.
This is an excerpt from the BBC series "The Way of the Warrior" dating from circa 1982. Great stuff. Great series. I have to say, having taken The Way for some small time, I am so impressed with Guro Dan. An Ambassador.
...is their own preference for their own goals and reasons. Sorry to sound like I am trying to lecture to everyone but I thought I would share my opinion since everyone else is. Some of the best knowledge is gained through listening to some one like Dan Inosanto speak about the arts. A clearly intelligent person with more yrs of martial arts experience than most people have lived. Thank you Guru for passing so many years of knowledge on to so many people.
I studied Judo and Aikido for many years and can say that all the martial arts have their place. Bruce Lee's skills were extremely well-developed and he was an amazing athletic and intellectual talent, difficult to cope with by any system... he just had overwhelming skills. His base was Wing Chun, which is a powerful and capable system, but he used many other skills including western boxing. Judo is very powerful and if a Judoka gets a hold of you may be finished... but same for good wrestler
And Bruce Lee was the technical editor for James Yim Lee's book "Wing Chun Chinese Art Of Self-Defense" in which James Lee demonstrates Wing Chun's Sil Lum Tao form.
I am not doubting Bruce but everyone has their way of practising their martial art. Bruce is a great martial artist focusing great deal on speed, strength and agility. However, his demonstrations and movies could only show so much application and combination. The fact that he learnt Wingchun in the kungfu discipline and not studying other style long enough may account for that. His openmind view for all types of martial arts is what I greatly appreciate tho.
Dan Inosanto, is true filpino legend who is open minded in any kind of martial arts that him and Bruce Lee shared. Dan Inosanto, is better than other conventional martial artist in the world. Pinoy Pride!
The traditional method of forms is necessary for solo practice. Especially when training alone for long periods where there wasn't a friendly gym close by. Don't mock the forms just because the times have changed.
How many more traditional "masters" need to be demolished by amateur MMA fighters for you to get the idea? The problem with training with forms, is that you are training yourself to fight someone who also fight with the exact same form as you. JKD is not a set of moves you have to learn. It is rather an ideal. A constant, ongoing progress you work on your entire life. Like an artist learning art not in terms of charcoal pencil and white paper.
MASTER , DAN INOSANTOS .HAS BEEN A PERSONAL , FAITHFUL FRIEND OF BRUCE LEE , YEARS .!!!. & TRAING WITH HIM TOO.!!!. ANYTHING HE SAYS IS IMPORTANT.!!. 😎💝👍...
Right about needing to know what the forms are for. Here are some other benefits of forms, 1) Building Memory 2) Making the techniques part of your muscle memory 3) Staying limber 4) Forms are a good way to practice alone. Yes I study the Kyusho applications, but I just like collecting forms.
Bruce was only in early 30's when he died too early. His best friend an principal student had by far exceeded bruce lee in ability an teaching plus he has been learning martial arts for 50 plus years! The man took jeet kune do where it needed to go an as bruce was also about evolving as a hunan an martial artist he has become a Genuine Grandmaster in his own very long time as a martial arts instructor.R.I.P Bruce Lee an all the 👻 of historical martial art founders!
This world today is fucked up and sick ! It's so sad to see those Genious People die so young..People who lived in the '70 and '80 know what i mean.. R.I:P Bruce !
Forms set up imaginary scenarios that you almost will never find yourself in so it gives you a false sense of knowledge. It makes defense and offense predictable and rigid in turn making response unrealistic.
@@toxsin2207 I'm afraid I have to disagree. Forms are extremely important. EVERY movement contained in the 3 forms of WIng Chun have a purpose. Just because Bruce didn't want to teach them doesn't make it not so. And if you didn't already know.. 99.9% of this video is Wing Chun! Most of the action in Bruce's movies is Wing Chun. With the utmost respect toward Dan Inosanto and of course Bruce Lee and the reasoning behind JKD, the moves should have been explained. Even though most of them may never be necessary in an average street fight against 1 person.
@@matthewberner9732 Right! Here they're explained.. I was referring to a previous poster's claim that Bruce complained that forms weren't important because they were not explained.
@@Drivethebeat Forms fail. In the real world, you meet people with whole sets of different styles. Your only bet is to practice on adaptability. My father was a black belt in TKD and Karate, but when he teached self defence, he NEVER teached people to strike from a traditional stance. Never. He trained reflex and fighting IQ, rather than muscle memory alone. He reasoned that in street fights, you‘ll fight in an elevator, probably on a steep hill, on a stair, against people with knives, etc. I guarantee you, having trained in boxing, when dude started teeping me I froze. I have never trained to react from that. Believe me, there is a reason why MMA rules. When adrenaline kicks in, your heart rate jumps. You loose focus. You‘ll act out your memorized steps like an idiot. But JKD teaches you to have the mindset of a hunter. You went in not to fight, but to hunt. Have you ever hunted? You‘ll get close to jaguars, tigers, but you don‘t have the "idea" of fighting them. You went in silence and act with speed. Try differentiating tigers fighting opponents off, versus tigers hunting they prey. They act differently. TLDR; there is a reason why grapplers train, and only fight on soft mats. Guarded by rules where you can‘t bite, eye gouge, etc. Usefull, yes. For entertainment, not real life. Boxers trained their whole life not reacting to kicks. TKD guys always look like idiots fighting Muay Thais. I could go on and on. Bruce teached self defence. Not entertainment. He teached how to attack vital points like eyes, throat, sternum, in different possible situations in the fastest way possible. For that, he had to get rid of forms. If you want to be able to effectively defend yourself, learn JKD. If you want to entertain, remember the dance steps and memorize the rules! Just hope that criminals respect them.
Wat a dream it would be to hang out with all these guyz that knew bruce, just for one day.i would be lik a sponge and absorb so much knowledge, from them.i idolize ,bruce growing up, back in the 80's.
Lee began teaching martial arts in the United States in 1959. He called what he taught Jun Fan Gung Fu (literally Bruce Lee's Kung Fu). It was basically his approach to Wing Chun. In Oakland's Chinatown in 1964, Lee had a controversial private match with Wong Jack Man, a direct student of Ma Kin Fung, known for his mastery of Xingyiquan, Northern Shaolin, and T'ai chi ch'uan. According to Lee, the Chinese community issued an ultimatum to him to stop teaching non-Chinese people. When he refused to comply, he was challenged to a combat match with Wong. The arrangement was that if Lee lost, he would have to shut down his school, while if he won, he would be free to teach white people, or anyone else.
Bruce Lee loves to share. He wants to share the beauty of the art where he began to learn martial arts along with the art of the style he have created not also for himself and given it to anyone willing to learn.
While Most Only See Ethnicity & Teaching Their Own..He (Which I Also Agree With) Only Seen Being Human & Teaching The World! #Kudos #WellDone #MrLee & All Human Beings Alike!!!

I love how you think actual fights are "competition". more like someone trying to take a few swings at a moviestar. it's not like people had smart phones back then to video an altercation.
Nobody had smart phones in the 60s and 70s dumbass. What the hell are you smoking? Ignorant dumbass.
I said it's not like they had cell phones... Altho i misread what the OP was saying and thought he was being sarcastic about Insanto validating Lee.
Fade2Dark *Why don't you ask Dan Inosanto for a match. Tell him to use JKD. Then you'll know if you're right or wrong.*
*Ask for a street fight.*
Man...i didnt want him to stop talking or this video to end.
😎
@M we dont care .-.
@SJ So
...at all! Lol
What is spectacular for a movie isn't always practical in the streets. That's just so poetic.
Bruce adjusted his fighting for the movies and for the streets. No two situations are rarely if ever the same.
That's real talk.. heheh
He couldnt of said it any better.
Yika - yup
Bruce on the street with NO RULES would kill any MMA fighter if he had to, fact.
It doesn't look cool? Just watch Spike Spiegel
Thanks
The bad thing about this video is it had to end 😭 great video 👍🏼
What a legend!! God bless Dan that you are still alive and sharing this!!
Truthful words (the formless) are not beautiful.
Beautiful words (forms) are not truthful.

Well said and true
TAO 2811 That's right!
Its always a good day when your going down the rabbit hole of Bruce lee video's there's nothing more satisfying.
Brings back old times. I was a student at the Kali Academy. Dan Inosanto and Richard Bustillo opened my eyes to the truth of martial arts.
Reading the comments on this videos makes me happy. People call him "Guro Inosanto" It's the first time that I have seen the word Guro out of my country. I'm sure those people who uses this term, knows what it means, but for those who don't, it mean's teacher in Filipino.
mma before mma
bull
Well, MMA is a sport. Not a street fight which has no rules, no referee, no TV cameras etc.
@@harryhirsch8527 not bull, but real MMA,I was there..and our conditioning was better than UFC...
Dan is awesome. I just started JKD and my Sifu was taught directly by Dan himself. Makes me more confident in my own training.
Amazingly well said. Thank you for posting this.
You Welcome!
The way they show Jeet Kune Do and explain things... It really gets me fired up! :D I wish I could learn these.
Bruce is still very much living in the life of Inosanto! When he said if you're secure in your knowledge, why hide it...I sware with all of my soul I heard Bruce's voice pierce his vocal chords!
after probably watching thousands of martial art videos on youtube, I can say that this is probably one of the best ones out there.
Forgive my ignorance, but as this guy was describing how Bruce developed the system based on various tried and true martial arts and western arts, would JKD be described as the first form of MMA???
Absolutely without a doubt. It is MMA in it's true form.
Steve T Yep. Even also Bruce Lee has the title of “The Father of Mixed Martial Arts” by Dana White.
That’s why mma fighters say he’s the found father of mma
YES!
Yes. that's exactly right.
Quite simply. A synthesis that emphasizes the skills, abilities and talents that a person possesses. True genius.
Amazing how young they all are there, Dan, Chris, et al.... Those were the days it all seemed so magical back then... Still does to some extent....
Possibly the best Bruce Lee vid on the net, because Guru Dan breaks it all down so clearly.
Dan Inosanto is like the professor of martial arts.
Absolutely facinating video. Dan is a national treasure.
Bruce : Do you speak English?
Dan : Oh hell i speak great english!!!
Bruce had so much to teach us all and Thanks to Mr Inosanto for continuing his knowledge.
Wow! This video is impressive! Now I know what the forms are for. Thank you for posting this video.
WOW! Absorb what is useful! Thanx master Bruce & guro Dan!
I learn so much just from this. Thank you
“What is spectacular for a movie is not practical for the street. What is practical for the street is very dull for a demonstration.”

2020 and i'm still watching this
Thank you so much for sharing this footage! I named my son after Dan Inosantos.
wow, did not expect him to go into that chain punch that quickly @5:34 impressive.
Agreed. Every art has something to offer. That was what Bruce realized very quickly. That is why he explored out of Wing Chun and boxing into other arts. Once someone does that they start to see more than the differences in systems but the similarities. That is why it is easy to mistake techniques in the video for only WC and boxing. Dan even adds some Kali at the end which is extremely similar to Wing Tsun.
my father always told me "it is not about the form, it's about practicality" "the form is just to entice students into joining because it looks cool"
This is an excerpt from the BBC series "The Way of the Warrior" dating from circa 1982. Great stuff. Great series. I have to say, having taken The Way for some small time, I am so impressed with Guro Dan. An Ambassador.
1: 19 " quick thinking, openess, and a flexibilty of mind" -sounds like laying the basic foundation for MMA.
bruce Lee and dan inosanto, the best.
XD.....lol
best of theoretical fights...
@@harryhirsch8527 I dont think so. You dont go from China to America and spreading theory. Bruce was in practise!
@@harryhirsch8527 That makes no sense whatsoever as even your keyboard warrior beloved MMA and BJJ use theoretical scenarios/situations for training.
This is really good technique. I have always admired Filipino martial arts
...is their own preference for their own goals and reasons.
Just beautiful absolutely wonderful’ thank you Master Dan I. ❤
Thank GOD for Sifu Dan Inosanto...
And Bruce Lee was the technical editor for James Yim Lee's book "Wing Chun Chinese Art Of Self-Defense" in which James Lee demonstrates Wing Chun's Sil Lum Tao form.
This video should be archived as a historic monument to martial arts everywhere.
He's very honest of the reality and difference between movie and practical moves
@67 Hannibal he is wrong.and you will lose the fight.
They are not mocking.
Don't be so angry
To me forms are like a encyclopaedia of techniques. How else do you pass down so many fighting techniques.
Brilliant and the most honest and helpful little explanation ever of Lees style
Dan is real example for all generation... Cool.
this man whom Bruce lee was loved, is his very close friend Dan inosanto
Dan is one of the Filipino Martial artist expert in weapon Arnis,, which means fighting stick, bolo and Knife combat. He teach Bruce lee in Arnis .
Yes, its true. Many people dont know that! Do you train JKD?
All martial arts have forms. Boxing is an example.
Bruce Lee was unique, unequalled, and way before his time. RIP Grand Master. Never to be forgotten.
Sifu Inosanto is such a badass. Just shows how of a knowledgble guy Bruce Lee is.
This is global treasure of the ages
Look at that, Jeff Imada, lead fight choreographer for all Bourne Series. Awesome to watch this golden treasure.
I think forms are important. Just explain the reason behind the moves that's all.
Drivethebeat Ah... but they were explained-
@@matthewberner9732 Right!
The 2 students have crazy fast hands, Dan has taught them well.
Bruce Lee uma lenda entre as artes marciais!
I met Dan Inosanto when I was Long Beach at Khmer Kicboxing Gym ! Nice Guy !
A very helpful lesson!
Bruce Lee loves to share. He wants to share the beauty of the art where he began to learn martial arts along with the art of the style he have created not also for himself and given it to anyone willing to learn.
Bruce Lee, was the epitome of martial arts!
While Most Only See Ethnicity & Teaching Their Own..He (Which I Also Agree With) Only Seen Being Human & Teaching The World! #Kudos #WellDone #MrLee & All Human Beings Alike!!!
Bruce was ahead of its time, and no mobile phones than, no internet and ony reality check. Am I right?
Agree also you can ask jim Kelly rip
Right. Glad that worked for him 30 years ago. We see how successful JKD is in modern martial arts. Thanks for educating me though :)
Wow, I have this documentary as a special feature on one of my Bruce Li DVDs.
I love too know the name of that dvd if you dont mind.
