      @Zeek Banistor Write to Chuck Norris, he's one of the few people who was able to know Bruce Lee as both a fighter & an actor, remember that in that era, Chuck Norris was a Karate Champ 1st & an actor 2nd, so I'd say he had the skill to accurately gauge a fellow actor he's sparring & working out with on set. From what I've been lead to understand, Mr. Norris is even one of those actors that answers some fan mail.

      Bruce Lee didn’t like the idea of sport fighting where their was regulations and rules. He was interested in real fighting as in REAL LIFE fighting. No rules, no regulations, no referee…….as long as he’s standing and you’re not that means he won. He’s absolutely correct a lot of sports fighters have never been in a real fight. Use some logic: we always get better at what we do on a regular basis. For you to even imply that the martial arts actor Bruce Lee would defeat most any full contact fighter is ludicrous. If there was a full on fight, no rules, to the death, maybe he would've participated. If you've seen his demonstrations, you'd know it shows how powerful he can be. Zeek Banistor if you are going to assess someone’s fighting career on what is written in a book, then there has never been a fight in high school because they aren’t published either.
      Don’t expect to find everything documented in someone’s life. Especially if it’s about times they would not have been proud for others to recognize.
      Reading what others wrote about someone is not the golden key to unlock their entire life and everything they did. That’s hubris.

      Not sure if your quotes are accurate, but I think the issue people have is that legend of Bruce Lee is almost certainly far greater than his actual ability. Bruce Lee was an innovator and a savant and an artist and an amazing athlete. However, we really don't know how he'd stack up in a fight against the best today.
      All there was when he was on the scene was boxing, at least from a true professional standpoint. There was kick boxing and muay thai and other martial arts in pockets, but the best fighters and athletes were boxing. There weren't many people trained in any martial arts. Fast forward to today, with MMA, its a different story.
      I mean, Chuck Norris's quote is laughable. The odds that Chuck Norris would be competitive in todays MMA world is ridiculous. There is no basis to believe that. That is just the bluster of an old guy about kids these days, when in fact, in almost every instance, athletes today are superior in training and performance and the numbers of people competing in all of these sports is magnitudes greater than were competing in the 60's and 70's.
      Finally, there is a theoretical maximum that someone who is 5'8" 140lbs can hit. Even if Bruce Lee was at that theoretical limit, he would not be able to compete with people too much larger than himself. Especially, when the height difference became too great.
      So, Bruce Lee was great and deserving of being a legend, but, just like the legends of 600ft homeruns and guys that could jump 60" in the past, the magnitude of the legend is greater than the truth of the act.

      Yes, there will never be but as good as he was, he knew his limitations in regards to his fighting ability. He was very fortunate to have found and trained in Wing Chun, a style that utilizes scientific geometry to the fullest. It's unfortunate that his ADD restricted him to only learning about 20% of WC while in China. The fact is, because of Politics, he could never learn the rest of the style through his Master Ip Man. Luckily, although Ip had hundreds of students, he also had 5 disciples, and only these know the entire system. Bruce knew two. One was his senior teacher, WSL.. and the other was his childhood friend Duncan Leung. Both are disciples and whenever Bruce needed to know more he would discreetly contact one or the other. It went without saying that Bruce knew better than screw with either one. Sadly, Wong Shun Leung [WSL] died a few years ago but he was working with Bruce on his last movie Game of Death, and in the original script, WSL was on the top floor of the pagoda, and at the end he killed Bruce. That would have been the 1st and ONLY movie that showed TRUE Wing Chun fighting style and this was something Bruce was excited about. WSL can be seen in many of the still pics of the movie set. Gary Lam represents WSL today. Duncans lineage, which is smallish and very secretive, has four differing sets of kicking jongs as well as a reactive knife jong, and may be represented by his son Darren. Both can be seen on YT.

If Wing Chun is so effective, why is it that every video that I see of MMA vs Wing Chun ends up in a MMA guy victory? Bruce Lee certainly found some of Wing Chun effective but not the entire system.
      Bruce Lee sought to abolish the concept of one being a slave to a particular style.
      My advice is to expand your horizons my friend, and do not be locked into a restrictive system. Me for instance, I like taekwondo kicks, Western boxing as well as taekwondo hand strikes, Muay Thai knees and elbows, and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu grappling.

Then we sat down and negotiated how long we'd fight before quitting and go to score cards to determine the winner. Finally, we agreed on whether to wear 10, 12, or 16 ounce gloves, and hired a referee to make sure we didn't hit each other low or behind the head, etc.

      People believe wat they wanna believe. Just cause they were no recordings doesnt mean hes fake. Thats like telling a retired marine sniper that hes fake even when he has already proven it. Bruce lee figured out how to get enormous speed with *techniques* he was not superhuman but 99.9% of people today are too stupid to realise that. Plus he was only about 130 pounds. Jkd was developed to end a fight in seconds. Even masters of martial arts will never be able to defeat bruce. Why? Bruce knows how to end a fight quickly by targeting the body's weaknesses. "I fear not the man who has practiced 1000 kicks one time, i fear the man who has practiced 1 kick 1000 times" or somethin like dat. Bruce practiced jkd everyday for years. Each move he easily could have done ove 2000 times. Tell me how do u beat someone that crazy in a street fight? Obviously he wouldnt have gotten popular if he wasnt this good. So if he was fake how did he create jkd? And what about his original students? It takes enormous amounts of stupidity to say he is fake or ufc fighters today can beat him. With all that training i can bet that he can take out a lion with dual nunchuks. Have ever seen his side kick? HE FUCKING LEAPS SO FAR xD. That amount of moment will definitely do some damage to a lion. Am just saying he might, but idk i cant change ur beliefs.

      It does when the hong kong police are after you for it. He was a child actor who had been training in martial arts his entire life, not in some twice a week class at the YMCA but in CHINA where that shit is no joke, where training is pretty much BEATEN into you. Understand that most actors doing those kung fu movies, they would slow down the camera to make action look faster, but when they filmed him doing his moves he actually had to slow down his moves because the camera couldn't catch him clearly - at regular speed, all you could see was a blur. Someone with that much speed and training is nobody you want to pick on, spoiled rich kid or not. That kid could kick some ass. .
      There is a reason the guy is a legend and it isn't because he was an ACTOR. He had a gift and a passion. He CREATED a martial art, FFS, and an effective one at that. THAT means quite a bit more than "kids fighting".

      UpRoaryus...you really need to do some simple research and common sense. Bruce was a famous child actor, he was not a ghetto rat living in the alley. He created Jeet Kune Do because he felt it was lacking after the single known fight that he had, its not really an art since there is no set curriculum. If he had really been fighting with Martial Artists and not kids when he was in HK he would have discovered the issues with Wing Chun years before. Kids fighting other kids means nothing...this was proven by Bruce Lee himself.

    • @UpRoaryus
      @UpRoaryus 6 ปีที่แล้ว +38

      Nowhere did I say he was a ghetto rat, and never denied he was an actor as a child, but my point was that he was wanted by the Hong Kong police , and his neither acting nor his schooling has anything to do with the fact that he also ran with a gang and fought for his LIFE not with just preppy kids on the schoolyard at recess . You think that his being from affluence or an actor prevents him from being a great fighter too? THAT isn't good common sense at all.
      How about YOU do some simple research? The facts of his life are readily available about the man and they are simple to prove. He couldn't study Wing Chun in the states because there was no TEACHER good enough to learn from here. He had to wait until he could return to China to study under the masters.
      Jackie Chan has talent and charisma too, famous actor. Not even the same league as Bruce Lee in terms of legend because he is not the same kind of fighter that Lee was. Good stuntman, good actor, and tons of popular movies, but nowhere near the same status as Lee.
      Jeez. The ignorance displayed by people who don't ever pick up a book is incredible...

    • @cuzz63
      @cuzz63 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Lee was a known taker of pain killers and is believed to have died from heat stroke. He had his sweat glands removed because he didn't like the look of sweat on his shirts. People talk down on Bruce like he was just an actor but don't want to acknowledge him as a true master of martial arts because they're being biased. I'm polynesian and were like one of the strongest people on this planet but growing up a huge fan of Bruce Lee's movie's and his martial arts abilities. I can tell u right now that in my honest opinion. He was way before his time even in today's standards its 2021 Bruce Lee was still ahead of the game. No one to this day with his weight class is stronger or faster than him. I'm not talking about a race or bench press, just in speed and strength alone in natural ability of what the human body is capable of. He was able maximize every part of his body where he was lethal in every possible way from a physical and speed standpoint and had endurance to add on top of all that. Arnold Schwarzenegger said, it himself that he was amazed at Bruce Lee's body not only for his looks but the strength and agility and speed behind it for a small man.

      I thought the story my mum told me was inflated, until my Grandfather confirmed it as he then taught my father building construction to repair the wall. My farther never talks about his skill set or about these feats of what’s, well impossible in what is perceived to be normal, as old as he is now, as frail as he is perceived, I’m always mindful he still has it. How did you confuse "Bruce Lee was
      not a fighter"
      for
      "Bruce Lee
      couldn't fight" ? Hmm ?
      Because that's what you
      are saying.
      That was your interpretation,
      not Joe Lewis'.
      Could Lewis not have meant that it was NOT Lee's PROFESSION to take part in tournaments, but that his PROFESSION was acting and teaching?
      Otherwise, why mention acting ?
      Acting and teaching were his bread and butter.
      Ain't nothing wrong with that.
      But what
      a 'fighter' means to Joe
      was one who
      who professionally takes
      part in tournaments
      as a profession,
      to make a living.
      It's the fight GAME,
      with trophies.
      Like the
      bodybuilding circuit.
      Not martial arts.
      And Lee only wanted to spar with winners, like Joe. So ? Is that wrong ?
      Of course he was learning from everyone !
      That's what made him
      a creative, adaptive martial artist that he was,
      and we should all aspire to be !

      DW Forum - You have said on numerous occassions that Bruce was not a fighter, but at the same time you say that Bruce was the first Ph.D in martial arts fighting? And you have also written about how when you first met Bruce you were really prejudice in those days, especially of little guys as fighters, what changed your mind? You also write that in those days you didn't care much for talkers, you say, "don't tell me how to fight if you never fought", you go on to say "I was a doer in those days, and I didn't care much for talkers. In other words, don't tell me how great you are, how great your style is, or weather your stuff works or not. Let's simply get in the ring and I'll find out within a matter of seconds". What was it that changed your mind and become one of Bruce's students? Why were your classes private, and were Chuck Norris, or Mike Stone taught privatly also?
      Joe Lewis - Bruce told me he did not care about competing. He had no interest in it, and he said he felt there was nothing to gain by him doing so. Little guys, in my opinion, have always been the best trainers. This is because tactically very early in their careers they figure out how to conquer larger opponents. Mike Stone, who I respect, convinced me to study with Bruce. Martial arts does not have a long history as does boxing. Bruce Lee was a wealth of knowledge. No one knew what he had. Bruce Lee was proud to be the instructor of three world champions, Norris, Stone, and myself. With private lessons, he could customize each lesson to fit and compliment the attributes of the individual. I teach this way also.

      Mário de Azevedo I’m alway fascinated with people who say Chuck said this about Bruce, which is not true.I can actually provide video evidence of what he actually said about Bruce when asked. Can you provide any proof of Chuck saying he beat Bruce? There is an interview on TH-cam when asked about Bruce and if he could beat him and Chuck paused and said “ I’m was a professional fighter “ but then he brushed it off and said Bruce is really good and neither of them want to go there with each other. In other words they never competed with each other or felt the need to. He says they worked out together a few times. Do you have proof of all of the people who were saying things about Bruce? Even if these fighters believe that they could beat him they would never see it because it’s a bad PR move. If you want to get along and go along there is a social pressure to say nothing but good things about Bruce. Also it’s a sign of respect. When Donnie Yen was asked about Bruce Lee and if he can beat him he says that Bruce was his elder and he respected him which is also an interview on TH-cam. He never say that he couldn’t bear Bruce. That was a smart political answer. You are right Bruce has reached a level that most won’t and he was way ahead of his time as far as his ideologies of training and fighting. I can never put Bruce Lee as top fighter because he didn’t fight. It’s easy to talk about what he can do to someone but eventually everyone gets hits and Bruce’s his chin is an unknown variable. He may have a glass jaw for all we know. People blindly believe things without thinking about all of the variables.

    I've never fought professionally myself, but I immersed my myself in MA during a time in my life and met many fighters and teachers in chicago-those who had connections to Dan Innosanto and other Bruce Lee students. I say with 100% certainty that anyone who's fought (street or sport) or knows those who have, KNOW how big fighters, boxers, and martial srtists egos are. They are HARD to impress because they're used to beating up and getting beaten up by others, and know they have to train like hell to win.
    That said, THINK FOR A SECOND: back then, fighting and MA here in the US was mainly all about the black and white fighters and boxers and martial artists. The climate against Asians and Asian males did not encourage or facilitate respect in any way. Add to that, you have credible, legitimate fighters and champions like Joe Lewis, chuck Norris, Jim Kelly, etc... GOING TO HIM FOR TRAINING, saying from their own mouths they witnessed his inhuman speed and strike force. Do you think they'd have EVER done that or still talk about Bruce with that kind if awe and respect if it weren't true? Moreover, these guys had nothing to gain by talking up the skills of a Chinese martial artist who was so much smaller than them. Their own pride wouldn't and integrity as fighters would be forfeit if they lied or misrepresented his skill or theirs. And THINK, WOULD ANY OF THESE GUYS, OR ANY FIGHTER WORTH HIS SALT, TRAINED WITH SOMEONE THEY HAD NEVER SPARRED WITH, OR COULD BEAT? You train with those who are better than you, and at the Champion level, you don't make room to train with anyone else you see as beneath you, or can best and learn nothing from. You certainly don't talk with awe and respect of a guy unless it's true.
    Remember, Bruce Lee the "myth" didn't really hapoen till AFTER he died, so while he was alive, he didn't get a built in, unchallenged rep. Moreover, if he had been an "just an actor" or "not a real fighter or martial artists" the way I've read skeptics claim, his way of fighting wouldn't have proliferated, his first school would've lost students and closed after he lost fights, and proven, champion fighters wouldn't have sought him out. He literally would've been a forgotten joke that fighters would've scoffed at instead of speak with reverence of as they still do today. Bruce Lee could never have attained the legend status he has.
    Tell me one serious, credible fighter, boxer, or MA who'd go to someone to train with, who they never sparred with, they could beat, or "wasn't a real fighter"? Seriously people, THINK. They'd have had Bruce prove to them he could beat them or at least matched up to them before working with him or acknowledging respect of him, and these guys MOST CERTAINLY would've sparred with him to determine that yeah, he impressed them at least enough to want to learn what he could teach them. Again, seasoned fighters and champions confirmed Bruce's abilities and feats, not aknow nothing 10 year olds.
    Add to all the above the fact that ALL honest fighters will confirm that their punches and kicks will never be as fast or powerful when they're NOT trying to hurt someone as when it's no holds. It's bc your body is literally trying to fight against actually hurting someone, so you're no generating the kind of kinetic energy you otherwise would. There are those who say how there's so little actual footage of Bruce in "real" fights (tournaments). Yet, al you have to go is look at footage from his films, his green hornet audition, and talk with fighters who knew him to understand that, you can't fake technique and skill on camera with the speed and ease he had. Plus, as fast as he seemed to be on film, he actually had to SLOW DOWN so the cameras could capture his moves and ways he did things. As fast as Bruce was on film, he was still pulling his kicks and punches, meaning he wouldn't have generated the speed and kinetic force he'd have if he was going full out.
    That's why, when I heard about that ignorant scrub, Michael jai white, say he could beat Bruce Lee, and issue a half assed apology that still tried to defend his first statement, I rolled my eyes. First, me having 7-8 black belts in multiple disciplines doesn't necessarily mean what you think. Not all black belts or those who wear them are created equal. Meaning, who taught you? How much did you learn from where and fought who before getting It? What degree of belt is it? Most important, who rid you fight against and win who was better than you? How fast was mjw's speed in kicks and punches? Mass and speed are what equal to force. Also, if someone is faster, they wouldn't stand around for you to hit them, they'd be evading while seeking an opening.
    Based on the words of actual champion fighters who knew Lee, his fasted punch from 3ft away was .05 secs. That's impossibly fast for most people, no matter how elite. But science had Einstein and hawking, music had Mozart, so for ANYONE to flat out disbelieve or deny the possibility of Lee's Spode and sill is to deny the possibility of Mozart or Michael Jordan. There are simply RARE human beings who are genetically blessed with the physical equivalent of genius.
    As others have pointed out, a bullet is tiny, but when expelled from a gun at the speed it is, it's deadly. mjw's can go on all he wants about size and strength, but if guys like Joe Lewis say Lee was THAT fast and could hit that hard (heavyweight level force) despite his ht/wt ratio, white would never have touched him. Look at Lee's physique, and any dolt who says he wasn't a martial artist or "just an actor" can't tell the difference between muscles that come from brutally extensive training, vs ones that are "sculpted" for show, and I assure you, there is a difference.
    Training: whatever white training regimen was, even if it was up to 8 hrs a day, it didn't compare to Lees, who literally lived to train and perfect Jeet June do when he wasn't sleeping. I'd bet my soul that mjw's speed or training was nowhere nears as fast or rigorous as lees, and even with the smaller surface area of Lees punches or kicks, at that speed, white could never have made contact and yes, would have been knocked out.
    We live in a day and age where tech can do some amazing things. What I'D LOVE TO SEE: I'd love to have some MIT, Hollywood, and martial artists come together to create a hollagram of Bruce Lee programmed to hit at his recorded speed (.05 secs from 3 ft), then outfit white or a similar doubter fighter who thinks he can take on led in a special virtual reality skin suit that's fitted with special contact nodes that could replicate the force that would be generated when the programmed hollagram made contact. THAT, if someone out there with the tech and money would oblige, is a way we could see at least a semblance of Bruce Lee fighting today. Though, I'm sure people who knew him would be creeped out and might find it disrespectful, and of course, a programmed hologram still wouldn't be Lee, even though it could be programmed to look like home with the speed if his reflexes.

      t ZG thank you for your work in this detailed entry. Very very interesting stuff and enjoyable read. When I think Bruce Lee, I’m thinking forget about his overtly elite hand speed, forget about his amazing balance and foot work and forget about his ability to kick an assailant anywhere on their body with pin point accuracy and lightning speed. What I think about is his superb and ultra elite fitness and his body’s ability to deal with a violent onslaught for genuinely extended periods. This man was absolutely beyond an elite level in fitness and conditioning. It would take a very brave, egotistical or foolhardy person that hyperthetically matches themselves with him in competition.

The devestating power he had was incredible speed and power. punched like Tyson and his weight was 80 lbs less than him. He also fought a pro fighter i which he beat him in a min. Dissapointed he couldnt beat him less than that. One inch punch try it if you can. The things he taught to others which they became better fighters. You know what else he did. Kato Lee i agree about the spartans( spartan myself father side) however Bruce Lee was very tough. He might no able to fight 20 people in movies but agsinst 3-4 attackers he can survive. My uncle beat up 3 guys. He leaned himself against a wall and 2 guys he damaged, the third one escaped. They jumped him to rob him. All he did for training he punched a heavybag for years. You can read all u want but at the end of the day its all theory. And the analogy that Bruce isnt tough is theoretical as well.

      @@JJ-zr6fu That's true, but if you practice hard enough and spar enough. A real fight wouldn't be that different it's just that a real fight, your opponent won't hold back and might even wrestle you to the ground. Bruce is a smart guy, he's also been in real fights before. He understands, it's killed or be killed. He understands how a real fight will go down. He understands how humans think, fight, behave, etc. Why do you think he practice so hard on speed and strength training as well. And finger jabbing to the eyes and everything else. Bruce pushed himself onto another level, both physically and mentally. If he doesn't out do an opponent physically, he will out do him mentality. He will out think , out smart him. He's not stupid, he will avoid and never fight someone 7 feet tall 280 pounds. He knows himself well and his capability. I can see into Bruce's mind and soul what he's about, that's why I'm able to tell you all this. The human mind can do wondrous and amazing things if enough focus is put into it.

    Yeah, the times they talked about Bruce Lee, they could say his focus was in how to fight. A thing people doesn't seem to notice about Bruce Lee, when they say modern MMA fighters could've beaten him, it's that Bruce Lee wasn't really attached to any style, he just constantly adapted, so if he had seen something was obsolete, he had removed those perspectives and keep on advancing.

      I am lucky to be one of the few to own one of Sijo DeMile's booklet on the 1 and 3 inch punch (technically, the 1 inch isn't really from one inch, but it's still a real punch)... and amazing how three guys in a line can be knocked thru the air with one of these short punches. In Matt Polly's new bio, he recounts when a weightlifter said he didn't think such a short punch could do anything. And then he was flying eight feet thru the air, a 'terrified look on his face.'

  • @spookyx9623
    @spookyx9623 7 ปีที่แล้ว +51

    There will always be haters. Bruce is a perfectionist and you can see it in everything he does. He was cha cha champion in Hong Kong because he developed new steps and made it better. All the people doing 2 or 1 finger push ups now do it because they saw Lee do it. He pushed his body to the limit and I'm sure he pushed his art to the limit and kept pushing the envelope. If others could do what he did then or could match him why didn't they do exhibitions like him to prove this only to come out many years later to say rubbish. He was always about looking for the fastest way to end a fight. He portrayed his philosophies in his movies and I believe he would use his teeth in a fight without thinking twice about it because it's about having the upper hand, however he did say in Longstreet that you don't go into a fight to use your teeth because that's the best way to lose them. If he was not so good why were all the world champions looking to train with him. He wasn't rich before he started making films in Hong Kong so you can't say it was because he was rich. You hear people in the training videos say things like them feeling the kick through the air shield. Also, if he didn't sparr for real why did they come up with so many protective gears for training. What most people don't understand is that in all the clips you see he is pulling his punches and kicks or not landing them purposely so as not to hurt anyone. He once said that every defence must be used to disable your opponent, every attack should be at places that will do maximum damage. If Bruce was fighting a no holds barred fight he would goured your eyes instead of punching you in the face because that will disorientate you the more. We might be hyping him more than he really was but one thing is certain, he is arguably the greatest martial artist that we ever saw, if others existed we never saw them, simple. Bruce is like those shaolin monks we watch in movies that develop fighting styles from watching animals fight, he was that intelligent.

      @spookyx9623 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Brick Shithouse what is not true? This is the type of comment that lacks any sense whatsoever. Is it the fact that he was chacha champion (because that is a verified fact) or the fact he pushed his body and art to the limits (because we can see it in him)? You need to tell me what is not true.
