I've owned an Evo IX for 6 years, and despite driving cars like the M3, GTR, 458, 911 turbo, Viper GTS, Panamera turbo, 5.0 POS mustang etc, I have never found a better car where you can feel the road through your arse and the drivers wheel and drive it on the limit with as much pleasure as the Evo. The only thing comparable to a crisp 4cyl, spooling turbo, and blow off valve (in my opinion) was the 458 with the symphony behind your head. Yes the interior is plastic, yes i've spent an ungodly amount of money on mods, yes the turbo takes the better part of a decade to reach full load if you're at low rev, but walking out to it as a daily driver makes you smile every time you let off the pedal and let the BOV flutter. I cycle through cars faster than my grandma uses colostemy bags, but this car is the shit, and its the only car I can confidently say I will never sell.
@ 1:10 you really sounded liike you dont know what youre talking about... A 2.0 Liter Evo makes hp more easily because its a 2.0 liter vs the 2.5 liter on the STi? Wrong! Evo's make more hp easily because there are FAR LESS limitations to the engine design vs the boxer engine. Boxers dont like to spin very high rpms, and their unequal length manifold restricts the power potential. Also the Boxer is an open deck engine, it needs to be a closed deck to make over 500-600hp without causing the head to come off the block. Given all of that, i'd still take an STi if I were looking for no more than 450whp and 100% streetable. They make tons more torque at lower rpm, its high rpm flow where the boxers run out of steam. If I wanted a track car that could be driven on the street, Evo allll day.
+cxbra Absolutely, the boxer design is the reason for not making huge power easily. Also the Japanese STI's are 2.0l and spin to much higher rpm than the 2.5 motors. The flat engine is also the reason why the STI is a more comfortable for daily driving because flat engine = lower center of mass = lower bodyroll in courners = softer springs does equaly great = more comfort.
The people that have things wrong with their Evo's are the people that are too stupid to realize what they are doing or try to cut corners. After owning 3 Evo's I can confidently say its people that are the problem not the car.
Nathan Ziegmann I had 2 STI's, no problem. I know how to maintain a car. If subies were so bad, why do they sell so well? Why are they one of the best cars built, why?
Shawn Moses I never said they were bad cars I just said they have horrible motors if you are a racer. There's a reason you don't really see high HP Subies compared to Evos....it's the horrible open deck motor that gives/blows up if you push anything past 500hp. Sleeved or not, built or not.( So technically they aren't the best built cars) Not saying there isn't any high HP subies I'm just saying that it costs a lot more to keep one running and new parts than an Evo of the same power. My opinion is off the fact that I build high HP cars and sell them for other projects. If I just wanted a stock car then between an Evo and a Subaru it's a tie. But if we are just going off the motor alone then the Evo is light years ahead of Subaru js.

I've owned an Evo8 GSR & Evo9 MR and currently own a 13 STI. The build quality of the Subaru is a lot better. But when it comes to pure power the 4G63 platform is on a whole different level when it comes to big horsepower.
pretty reliable. i have an evo 7 and i love it so far. can't wait to get on an evo 9 rear bumper! and this one in the video is such a clean example of evo 9s. great Video TJ.
Not sure why people are saying the Evo is a bad daily. I've been daily driving one for 5 years now at ~330whp on the stock turbo with no issues at all. It's not as comfortable as my WRX was, but it feels more like a drivers car than any Subaru. I think the engine reliability issue is stemming from the 4g63's reputation in the old GSM models. They addressed those issues and fixed them for the Evos if memory serves me correctly. Either way, 100k miles on mine so far so good.
I'm the original owner of my IX. This is a good review; it points to the essence of the platform. Arguably the best Evolution review I've seen here. It's also rather refreshing to see a decent Evo on TH-cam, rather than the usual riced out atrocities with a big HP number in the thumbnail. All this ricing was totally predictable 11-14 years ago, when some of us bought our cars, just as it's completely predictable that most of the YT Evo rice will be off the roads in the next 5 years. Then the rest of us [Evolution owners] can get back to just being high-performance car guys.
@@mrhighboost8474 it is because when the evo x came out, they blame Mitsubishi because of the 4b11t can't get higher horsepower than the ix's 4g63 there, amd the x is heavier but it is more comfort than any of the evo and the handling is much, much better than all of the evo but the people doesn't know that until Mitsubishi UK came out with the FQ-400 and the FQ-440 with 0-62mph in 3.8 seconds but there only 50 units of them, and later then, Mitsubishi stopped the x's production with the final edition.
+Tj Hunt Regarding the comment on the amount of steering input that is required, sounds like that particular car may be an outlier. Evos are well known for their ultra quick steering. I've never driven an evo 9 I hope one day I will. I will say however that my evo X is just about as bad a daily driver as one could think. Don't get me wrong I love the thing precisely because of that but its just not a good daily. Its rigid as hell, suspension/tires are pretty harsh over road imperfections. Those awesome evo seats that hold you in the canyons are a burden for getting in and out. The interior is loud... the aluminum roof I am sure doesn't help matters. The steering ratio is super quick so cruising down the highway requires a bit more focus. Clutch as mentioned is on the heavier side. If that sounds like a good daily... get one lol. I've driven a previous generation STI and I immediately felt it was a better daily but a worse race car. The Evo X on a windy road though.... is magical and makes you remember why you still haven't traded it in lol.
love the look of the evo but.. 1:39 is so true. so many piddly little problems with these things. my buddy owns an import shop and these cars have been lining his pockets for a years. fix one thing and not two weeks later something else breaks. when i visit him i say, " you still working on that evo?! " and he says, " no its back again something else broken.. "
I like the STi comparo. You're right, my old 07 just slaps boost at 4000, which is fun and feels much faster than it is, but not the best on track. Always wanted to test drive an Evo... even more so now
I've owned 2 x Evo8 MR FQ320's and an Evo X 300 SST. Miss the Evo 8 loads, brought a smile to my face every time I drove it. Think my next car will be a 9MR FQ360 but the prices in the UK are shooting up
Either way it comes down to preference. I have an eco my friends have Subarus I heard horror stories too. But at the end of the day it's what you're willing to put up with. I can't imagine a world with the sti's the evo wouldn't be what it is, and vice versa.
I daily'd my used 1g DSM (4g63) for 6 years before getting rid of it. The only problem I had came from replacing the timing belt tensioner with a bad unit and had to replace it. I then daily'd my 2g turbo DSM (4g63) for 9 years before the turbo shaft went out at 135k miles. That's a hell of a run for a stock turbo with minor upgrades. The only issue I had with it up to that point was the harmonic balancer pulley, which even new, would come apart under boost. I replaced it the 2nd time with a billet aluminum one and had no more issues. I'm now in a Evo X (4b11) and daily that. Yeah, they're detuned from the factory for longevity, so it's really easy to make a ton of power with them, but they're detuned for a reason, longevity. Increase the output, shorten the lifespan. Do crappy work, and you're gonna break something. That's true of anything mechanical.
are we going to make it, lmao. My STI is the same, hard to make u-turns. I have about 20 over stock also and like you said, the STI just boost all of a sudden and stays. I love STI and EVo, they are brothers in my eyes. STI seats are great. I am 185 pounds at 6 foot. When I was 177 pounds, my shoulders could not fit comfortably in the EVO. This is the reason zi chose Mazdaspeed Protege over srt4 in 2003.
In reference to ~1:20, your conclusion is incorrect. Smaller motor does mean it relies on the turbo more for power, especially in mid-top end RPM range, but the ease of making power with a turbo is more reliant on dimensions of the turbo and its cooling system (assuming its air cooled), and in fact the smaller motor displacement would make for longer turbo spooling times. Bigger, longer turbos/intercoolers and piping = more volume to pressurize = more air needed = longer time to spool. Smaller motor displacement = less air being moved at once = longer time to spool. I'm not sure on all the specifics of each car but I do know that the top mount intercooler on subarus, other than being rally inspired, also makes for less volume in the turbo system and shorter spooling times. Plus, because of the configuration of the horizontal 4 cylinders, going with a front mount intercooler system would be extra inefficient in comparison to an inline 4 with a front mount set up. There are quite a few factors to consider here. The displacement of the motor on the EVO is not why the evo makes "easy power". If I had to guess I'd say the power comes in quickly mostly because of relatively small but good turbo that builds pressure quickly and intercooler piping plus good back pressure from the exhaust which would all compliment a smaller motor well.
Letsss goo. ;D One of my fav cars in the world. Fav JDM car that's for sure. Love the Evo 9. I love how that thing looks, just something about it is so perfect. Glad you got to review it. Haven't been seeing too many of them on the road recently. But I would lovee to find one to purchase in the future. His looks clean too, very lucky man he is. I hope the owner drives that thing like a beast. Nice review! :)
I think you feel like the boost is gradual because of an electronic boost controller. Cause before i had that in my wrx the boost would just smack you at 4k
Can definitely sense some Casey Neistat influence in your videos, I love it, taking his style and applying it to the car side of TH-cam, that's dope Tj. Huge fan, sick evo, and keep up the good work, cuz the grind don't stop boiiii!!!!
I'm not sure I understand why having less displacement means the car would generally be easier to get power out of? Is that what you meant? Anyway, comparing 4g63s and FJ20ets the 4g was usually easier to get bigger power out of. A bigger displacement (EJ25) would make boost lower in the rev range with a similar size turbo...
2.0 has a square bore/stroke = more rpms = more power. yes a bigger engine can make more power but smaller easier to rev engine will ultimately make more...ie indy cars, ferraris, lambos etc
This evo look gorgeous. Nice ride height and the stock rims look sick. sounds awesomr, very clean. Do more reviews Mr Teej. Fan from Trinidad & Tobago :)
Is that a Tial Q BOV? I used to have a Turbo XS type-H that sounded just like that... until it started leaking. Now running a Cobb XLE (2007 STi, though). @Tj Hunt, does this car have a parts list?
My love affair with my Evo VIII has never wanted since I bought it new. It's my daily and I've racked some serious miles, but it's still as strong and healthy as ever even with it's WORKS package, with it's P2 flash, short shifter, ceramic down pipe, and exhaust
People need to say 4G63T when referring to the Evo engine, my brother has a Galant with a 4G63 which means it's the N/A version of the engine. T unsurprisingly means it's Turbocharged.
I was considering an Evo as I've always been a fan, however I wouldn't say it's the perfect daily driver. I currently own an MK7 and it'll blow the Evo away in many categories including comfort, MPG, and with a tune in performance as well. It's more refined, has far more options, better ride quality. And if you want the AWD version you go to a Golf R which with a tune will destroy an Evo and still get far better MPG. For track the Evo is a monster, however definitely not the perfect daily driver :)
Here's a secret. Before I was into Subaru, I was a die hard Evo fanboy! Lol. Evo 9MR was my dream car. & Charcoal gray with CF accents. OMG. Why did I ultimately buy an STi? Because Iowned an Eclipse & had enough of the DSM life. Lol. Still love Evo's tho! 👌🏻
EVO IX is the Best Model. Only problem (that i know that has happened to a ton of people) is with the MR version; the trans breaks down, primarily with the 6th-gear.
Mine has been in the shop for like 2 weeks :.( I can't wait to get her back. No car I would rather drive. Great review! You should find someone with an 8 also so you can compare ;)
Love my Evo, but FBO IX (Intake, Exhaust, FMIC and piping,) should be making like 350whp which would be like 100whp over stock. My evo VIII with FBO and cams made 350whp.
looks like you guys didn't get the models that went to the uk. not sure why. that model was sold at 400 bhp over here - they finished it with the ten at 440 bhp - some tuned to 540 bhp.
Idk what STi's you've driven but mine stock spooled at 3000 rpms all day. And 06 STi's ran the VF37 which was even smaller than my VF48. Good review tho I know a girl who has the same exact car but the MR edition, so sessy ;)
I love my Evo 8 as a daily except for Hondas always trying to race me.
lol
+luis velasquez Are the Hondas boosted? I hope so. Would be stupid to try to race a turbo car without a turbo yourself.

are we going to make it, lmao.
Driving on Sabre Springs Parkway....nice. Saw my house in the background!
I want your hat. That hat fits so perfect. It doesn't have the big top like a lot of hats have. I like it, I want it.
I have a X, but gah damn I love the way that the previous generations look
That's an excellent mic you have there. Even though the window is open, you can still hear your voice clearly.
+Leois12 Dose of Fousey :)
More reviews, nice!! Tj any hints on the next review? im loving the reviews on these 4 wheel drive beasts.
I miss your car reviews like this! :/ you should do more stuff like this sometime :)
As soon as the video started I hit that thumbs up button!!!
Tj! This evo is sick! You should try to get a review or the 2004 Volkswagen r32. It's one of my favorites and its a fun little rig
Lol he doesn't know shit about the car he is reviewing
This evo look gorgeous. Nice ride height and the stock rims look sick. sounds awesomr, very clean. Do more reviews Mr Teej. Fan from Trinidad & Tobago :)
Im just now seeing this and you have changed so much tj its crazy😂😂
Love the sound of this car. Love the vids man! Keep doing what ya doing! And boost the BRZ lol
you guts are driving in Temecula right? Noticed the scenery.....
Is that a Tial Q BOV? I used to have a Turbo XS type-H that sounded just like that... until it started leaking. Now running a Cobb XLE (2007 STi, though). @Tj Hunt, does this car have a parts list?
Evo 9 Mr fq360 by HKS are around 25k+ in the uk and are only rising in value ever year. Will reach the e30 M3 level very fast
My love affair with my Evo VIII has never wanted since I bought it new. It's my daily and I've racked some serious miles, but it's still as strong and healthy as ever even with it's WORKS package, with it's P2 flash, short shifter, ceramic down pipe, and exhaust
Im getting one thanks for this review tj you made my day easy i was doing research all day until i realize you made a review bro
People need to say 4G63T when referring to the Evo engine, my brother has a Galant with a 4G63 which means it's the N/A version of the engine.
T unsurprisingly means it's Turbocharged.
I love my subie but I definitely respect this gen evo!
Yeah but a golf shifts for you and looks like a grannys car
Dude, you're in Poway?!!
We're practically neighbors! Love your stuff - I'll keep my eyes out for you on the road.
Cheers!
Evo 9 is my dream car. Maybe now I'm just a high school student who drives dad's old Mercedes but I will someday...
Mine has been in the shop for like 2 weeks :.( I can't wait to get her back. No car I would rather drive. Great review! You should find someone with an 8 also so you can compare ;)
That Evo 9 is always at my. Block and I'm gonna steal it one day
should have put some volks te37 or rota grids
Gunmetal RPF1s would be cash too
+Allen Thor Why would you say te37 or the replica version lol wat
Or RPF1s😎
+Jourdan Johnson Too common ;P
Love my Evo, but FBO IX (Intake, Exhaust, FMIC and piping,) should be making like 350whp which would be like 100whp over stock. My evo VIII with FBO and cams made 350whp.
I've been driving an Evo 8 for about 10 years now. It's a great car but not for everyone. Yes the Recaros are nice but not for long trips.
looks like you guys didn't get the models that went to the uk. not sure why. that model was sold at 400 bhp over here - they finished it with the ten at 440 bhp - some tuned to 540 bhp.
"I almost like these more than the brz seats" LOL almost 😂😂
Tj where do you get your music from !!?? Or what type is it ?
casey neistat
I'd like to see you review a focus RS.
nice Evo... The plates are familiar, i believe i seen this car a few times on the highway.
Evo LOVE!!!
I'm on my 2nd. Had to sell the first.
I'll eat grass before I sell my current one!
Idk what STi's you've driven but mine stock spooled at 3000 rpms all day. And 06 STi's ran the VF37 which was even smaller than my VF48. Good review tho I know a girl who has the same exact car but the MR edition, so sessy ;)
I would give an arm and a leg for an evo IX . man, I got the money but its impossible to find ones in good conditions in south Florida
Hay what's that little box on the steering collum
Awesome review Tj. I actually love both cars. I just barely lean toward the sti, but I still love the evo's.
I wish I could own one of these along with my STi. So good looking!
tj you should turbo your car that would be awesome looks really dope right now how you have it set up
forgive my dumb question but i thout evo ix weren't sold in the us? did your friend buy it intnl
boy do i miss these vids
I miss this tj
