Roughly 18 years ago, I bought my Son his hunting rifle, a 300 WSM. And my love affair started for this cartridge started off. Now have 4 WSM's one for 130gr, 150gr, 180gr (my fav) and 200gr. All shoot lights out, and just something about it just works.
Been hunting with the .300wsm for 19 seasons, Ive learned a lot about this cartridge. I use it for everything from rock chucks and yotes to mule deer and moose. Its so accurate it sometimes makes me think my M70 is a target gun. I toiled with this caliber for about a year before I descovered the screws in my bace were too long. The next day I shot a 5 shot group @ 100yrds with 168gr pills that my pinky finger covered. Been hooked ever since...... all I will ever need from 125gr to 180gr it covers all my North American game.
Having hunted for about 60 years now and owning hundreds of guns because I am always searching for the perfect caliber and rifle I have found the 300wsm is just about as close as you can get for big game to perfect and the 7 rem mag is second and I say this after owning almost every single caliber and bolt action combo that is on the market!
One very important thing to note is ammunition is basically nonexistent for 6.5 prc right now but 300 wsm is actually easy to find and has more options.
The one to pick is the one you can do a ethical kill shot with I have a a 6.5 prc & creedmoor and a 300wm & wsm where I live the terrain can change very quickly so obviously that's when you need to figure out which caliber will benefit the best the 6.5 prc has a place where my 300wsm doesn't and depends on what I'm hunting
300 wsm is better for hunting hands down. Never cared about recoil when shooting game. Plus I feel a little less on the shoulder than a 300 win mag so it's not that bad.
I switched from the 30 win mag about 10 years ago to the 300 wsm too after hunting with the 300 win mag for about 40 years and glad I did at least for hunting
Not really a fair comparison with such a large mass deviation between the two rounds. Get the closest sized projectiles that are available. A 200 grain bullet takes a lot off the velocity. I shoot a 300wsm with 165 grain bullets at 3200 fps at the muzzle. If you consider that Kinetic energy is 1\2mV^2 you will likely notice that the V component will yield a large output with a small change of V as it is a squared function. I haven't run any calcs so please don't crucify me to harshly but I believe that if you had the bullets very close in mass it would showcase how a round that can propel the more massive projectile, faster will always out perform and for hunting purposes, you want to deliver as much energy on target as you can (within reason, no M-203s allowed on public hunting land lol) so the 300 wsm is the superior round in that regard.
Enjoyed the video and shared with a buddy that is considering a 6.5 prc. We hunt out West and shots out there are 400-500+ on average, so 300wsm is essential. The 6.5 can be used back home for whitetail with lighter recoil, yet if out West...one needs more end point energy. Terrific video/explanation. Look forward to more.

6.5 PRC is underrated. Both are good I prefer the 6.5 PRC muzzle break 143 Berger bullets. 300 WSM is equal I get better BC long range with the PRC. 600-1000 yards
Have seen custom 300 wsm shooting the 220gn berger bullets at 2850 to 2900 f/s with a. 717bc and the 300wsm have a far longer barrel life than the 6.5 prc. Both great cartrdges
My 6.5 prc is shooting a Berger 153.5 hybrid target at muzzle velocity of 3015 , at a 1000 yrds the velocity is still 1856 f/s and foot lbs of 1175 , out pacing the 300wsm 😁
The 6.5 PRC should have been 7mm PRC. Heavier bullets with better BC’s than the 6.5s would have taken better advantage of the powder capacity. The best thing going right now in this range is the 6.8 western. Good weight bullets with high BC. That being said, I’m getting 3150 FPS with a Barnes LRX out of my 300 wsm. I just converted to a long action bolt stop on my tikka to seat out my bullets further so my new loads will be even faster. I’m going to see if I can get the 190 LRX’s over 3000. But alas all the 190s are out of stock everywhere.
Actually from reports I hear they are very close in barrel life around 1500 to 1600 rounds for good accuracy. Its kind of subjective on how hot and quickly ppl shoot them.
They are close when you compare the two when using regular carbon steel but if you go stainless it really help with barrel life where I have gotten well over 2,000 rounds from both of these calibers!
I like a lot of your content but the bullets used in the comparison are really apples to oranges. If you used a lighter bullet with a higher BC like a bondsrike 180 gr with a BC of .615 or higher the wsm will annihilate the prc in every category but felt recoil. However, suppress the wsm or get a good muzzle device and that is basically a non issue. Oh, you can also find WSM almost anywhere, and the bullet selections are vastly superior to the 6.5. IMHO.
Disagree about better wind drift capabilities of 6.5 PRC in relation to 300 WSM. Anyway, in the end, we are comparing apple to bananas because the bullet weights are so different. Great video !
He is correct about wind drift but at normal ethical hunting ranges wind drift doesn’t come into play when comparing a magnum caliber to another magnum caliber when hunting! Just my 60 years of hunting and reloading experience!
I just bought a prc and in my hunting area in kansas on whitetail deer the max I'm going to shoot a deer would be around 300 yards. The rifle is capable of more but ethics haunts me so I don't try to extend the live animal shots...but at our local shooting range I can shoot the 750 yard targets without much sweat and I absolutely love this cartridge because of the low recoil..I have been shooting a 7mm mag for years and if I go elk or moose hunting that's the rifle I'm going with.
1st time hunting with the 6.5PRC this year, love it as I'm recoil sensitive. Devastating on mule deer, bang flop with the 143gr ELD-X bullet. I used 6.5x55 previous which I still love.

Since the wsm has a low twist rate they both can stabalize 150-160 grain bullets just fine and optimally. The heavy .308" bullets dont like the slow twist
If I’m hunting elk out west then I would use the 300 WSM but if I’m hunting white tails, hogs, or anything else like that then I’m rocking with the 6.5 PRC all day long. 6.5 PRC is just a more accurate caliber. I understand ammo isn’t as widely available as 300 WSM but I order mine online anyways and haven’t had a problem.
This is also a one gun for everything in every field presentation vs. Caliber specific to field specific or multiple guns suited to game size. I don't hunt in grizzly bear country so having a Caliber large enough for a dangerous encounter is not necessary. I also do not shoot beyond 400 yards. The 6.5 prc would work for me in all my applications. However the ammo availability and cost are prohibitive , which is why I have a 7 rem mag. I can find ammo anywhere at all grain weights and manufacturers at reasonable prices.

Barrel life on my old Ruger M77 was extremely good. I used it for thirty some years. I never let the barrel get really hot. If you can’t rest your bare hand on the barrel it is too hot and will start washing out the throat. I put at least two thousand rds throught it and still accurate. She can take 76 gr of 4831 no problem lol 😂 well broke in. She’a .300 win mag. If you can shoot it good that’s the one to use. Takes a bit of getting used to. This rifle puts them down on the spot. No suffering.🇨🇦🤠

Hello, why is the 6.5 prc being compared here? The parent cartridge of the 6.5 is a .30 cal., the .300 RCM. It is the ballistic twin of the .300 wsm. I own the .300 RCM and it is a nice set up in the Ruger Guide Gun.
But then you are comparing a long action cartridge to a short action. The whole reason Winchester improved their 300 win mag and made the 300 wsm in the first place.
You are thinking of the .300 pcr. The .300 rcm is a short mag. rcm stands for (ruger compact magum) the .300 rcm and .300 wsm are ballistic twins and at a glance you could never tell the difference visually. Sorry for the late correction. @bryanhersman4037
Good review and you keep it in a good perspective for the real world. It is true the 6.5 has a good sectional density for the 143gr ELDX at .293 and the .308 200gr ELDX is at .301 so it is a fair real world comparison as far as a hunting cartridge/bullet combo and I liked that you compared the downrange energy reality.
@@Bullets4Bucks Since you're comparing the new 6.5 PRC, you might want to compare against the 6.8 Western instead of the 270 wsm. The 6.8 Western and 270 wsm are virtually identical.
You know what's crazy is that if you cut the 300 wsm down to 18" you still have a 500 yard elk and 800 yard deer gun. Run the ballistics on a 168 MKZ going 2900 fps. That is my setup for deer and elk.
I actually got an 18" barrel built for my Tikka and it shoots the Norma 180gr Bondstrike at 2940 fps and that's a .615 BC bullet. The WSM easily beats the PRC for Energy on target.
The 6.5 PRC is awesome for long range deer and antelope and targets. I've had a lot of success with mine over the past two seasons. Hunting the Montana prairie the wind is bad and the shots can be long. Especially for antelope. But the round is low recoil so it's fun to shoot in the off season. High BC bucks the wind really well. But I'm thinking about a 300 wsm barrel for elk. But I'm pretty sure the PRC would work if the shot wasn't too far. But what's wrong with having another caliber option😂
270wsm is a closer matchup and actually beats the prc and western for flat shooting and wind drift. Nobody is talking about these longer bullets tumbling on impact

I have a question pertaining to barrel life and accuracy. It was mentioned in a comment that both the 300 WSM and the 6.5PRC both get around 1500-1600 rounds out of they barrel, before you start to see a change in accuracy. At that point what is the accuracy like? How much did the groups open up from there?
Good question. I'm thinking at that 15-1600 mark it varies depending on how the rifle was used and cared for. If it was pushed hard you will likely see a greater degradation then one cared for cooled and cleaned properly and a more gradual decline.
In my experience, you lose velocity and the accuracy becomes inconsistent and annoying. You start missing, clean it real good, check the bore with a borescope, and then cry and smash your piggy bank for a new barrel. When you're 1600 rounds into a rifle, you're not shooting 100 yard groups to check how bad the MOA change is. You just start missing and hate it. It can get as bad as 2-3 MOA, though. It depends how long it takes you to be annoyed by the accuracy loss.
I have found in the hundreds of rifles I have owned over 60 years is that a stainless barrel and a carbon fiber stainless barrel will last a lot longer and is even more important in the magnums for barrel life !
Idk about most of the stats your giving but I do know this at 930 yards in 7-8 mph winds I needed about .5 to .75 moa wind correction out of a 200 gr eldx but I use custom hand loads to so...... maybe the results I get are idk maybe I guess unfair ?
The recoil on the 300 wsm feels like slightly more. Neither one has terrible recoil in my experience although much about felt recoil cones down to the rifle not the chambering.
The 300wsm has just a little more recoil but it depends on the rifle comb and weight if the rifle and in some of my rifles the are about the same in felt recoil
You mentioned target shooting...If that includes competition shooting, the 300 WSM is way chosen more often for 1000 yards bench and F-Open for a variety of reasons. Much better throat life with the 300 WSM, which is another reason it is used in fixed position bench and prone comps over the larger 6.5 cartridges, including the smaller 6.5-284.
You are correct about the 300 wsm used for for F class but have noticed the 284 caliber is starting to give it a run for it’s money in the popularity race lately
Sectional density only matters with bullets that do not blow to pieces . The eldx blows to pieces on game . 300wsm all day . Mine liked the accubond long range (190 grain ) and the federal terminal ascent in a 200 grain. The 300wsm is a far superior large game hunting cartridge . The 6.5 prc is neck and neck with a 270 win loaded with 150s
Most newbs are NOT going to take a 500 yard shot! The newbs are recommended to take kill shots at up to 350 yards! If you like to walk then you can close the distance to 300 yards!
What does 2.5" do to the 300WSM? I have one with a 26.5" barrel and, it's moving the 200 into the 2900s and the factory 180 Norma bondstrike is above 3k... It would be nice to know if the 6.5 or 300WSM have a benefit to extra length...
You only get about 50 - 100 ft per second for every two inches you add on average so you have to ask to you really need that extra 2 inch of length out hunting?

300 WSM all day long for taking big game . 165g or 180g Partition or 200g Edge TLR would be my choice for bullets . IMO Edge TLR is superior to ELDX. If I was going for Long Range Bolt Gun and being used for Hunting the PRC is the obvious choice .

That's really not much of a difference in ft lbs of energy, only 400 ft lbs. Berger has great ammo. A 156gr going 2960 making around 1800 ft lbs at that distance. Lot less recoil, cheaper to shoot, and better when adjusting for wind. Within the first couple hundred yards the 300wsm owns it in energy.
I'm gonna call BS. I think the superior hunting cartridge is the one you can shoot more accurately. Which as you said is the 6.5. Shot placement is everything when hunting especially at long range. Which brings up my next point, 1000 yard hunting shot is very very rare, I've actually never met anyone who has ever shot anything other than a target at those ranges. So comparing ballistics out to that is ridiculous. 600 yards i feel is a more realistic extreme. Even then your going to have a hard time seeing through a spotting scope or whatever your using to truly identify why you want to shoot that animal. I'm not disagreeing with you that the 300 wsm is a powerful round built especially for big game and can be accurate. Hell Chris Kyle's favorite round was the 300 wsm. But unless you are hunting bear or moose or in Africa hunting some other big game I think the 6.5 prc will get the job done even with Elk and Moose.
Based on 4DOF and using factory load data - If you use 147 ELDM as a comparison - this brings things surprising closer at 1000 than 143EDLX. at 900 - 1000 they are neck and neck. Agreed, 300 WSM when it hits carries more energy, but energy ain't nothing if it isn't in a place that matters. However, if you include wind and spin and drop. PRC is much easier to get on target. If you add in increased shooter error, due to increased recoil, this magnifies. Nonsense. Look at f class. WSM is an outstanding long range cartridge and a much better choice for long range if you can manage recoil. Long range shooting and PRC comps are not the same thing.
The 300 WSM is cool because if you load max OAL, it's short action. The cool thing about the 6.5 PRC is it's half an inch longer, the definition of long action, and people call it short. The 300 WSM is cool in that I can get 350fps more out of my heavy bullets than running 308. The 6.5 PRC is cool in that I can get 100fps more than my 6.5 Lapua, but probably 50fps more than Creedmoor. I don't get 6.5 PRC. It is lacking balls and is long action. The box says 2900fps out of a 28" barrel, but Creedmoor gets 2850 out of a 24" barrel. Sooooooo... wtf?

I actually have an 18" WSM and it shoots the 180 Bondstrike at 2940 fps. Which is amazing, given the short barrel.

How's the price and availability of that 6.5 PRC compared to others. I can tell you it's substantially more expensive and much harder to find.

Since the wsm has a low twist rate they both can stabalize 150-160 grain bullets just fine and optimally. The heavy .308" bullets dont like the slow twist
If I’m hunting elk out west then I would use the 300 WSM but if I’m hunting white tails, hogs, or anything else like that then I’m rocking with the 6.5 PRC all day long. 6.5 PRC is just a more accurate caliber. I understand ammo isn’t as widely available as 300 WSM but I order mine online anyways and haven’t had a problem.
This is also a one gun for everything in every field presentation vs. Caliber specific to field specific or multiple guns suited to game size. I don't hunt in grizzly bear country so having a Caliber large enough for a dangerous encounter is not necessary. I also do not shoot beyond 400 yards. The 6.5 prc would work for me in all my applications. However the ammo availability and cost are prohibitive , which is why I have a 7 rem mag. I can find ammo anywhere at all grain weights and manufacturers at reasonable prices.
I have had both not only easier to get ammo but better knock down power on elk size game and that is why the 7 rem mag is so popular 50 plus years

Barrel life on my old Ruger M77 was extremely good. I used it for thirty some years. I never let the barrel get really hot. If you can’t rest your bare hand on the barrel it is too hot and will start washing out the throat. I put at least two thousand rds throught it and still accurate. She can take 76 gr of 4831 no problem lol 😂 well broke in.
She’a .300 win mag. If you can shoot it good that’s the one to use. Takes a bit of getting used to. This rifle puts them down on the spot. No suffering.🇨🇦🤠

Hunted with the 300 win mag for about 30 years before switching to the 300 wsm and the win mag is a great choice for big game!

With a 178gr ELD X the drop is basically identical and the energy stays ahead to 1000, but the difference is no longer so big. Great comparison video!

Dane you are totally correct about ethical shots on game but the only problem a lot of the hunters out there don’t care about ethical hunting which is not fair chase hunting just target shooting!
Hello, why is the 6.5 prc being compared here? The parent cartridge of the 6.5 is a .30 cal., the .300 RCM. It is the ballistic twin of the .300 wsm. I own the .300 RCM and it is a nice set up in the Ruger Guide Gun.
But then you are comparing a long action cartridge to a short action. The whole reason Winchester improved their 300 win mag and made the 300 wsm in the first place.
You are thinking of the .300 pcr. The .300 rcm is a short mag. rcm stands for (ruger compact magum) the .300 rcm and .300 wsm are ballistic twins and at a glance you could never tell the difference visually. Sorry for the late correction. @bryanhersman4037

Good review and you keep it in a good perspective for the real world. It is true the 6.5 has a good sectional density for the 143gr ELDX at .293 and the .308 200gr ELDX is at .301 so it is a fair real world comparison as far as a hunting cartridge/bullet combo and I liked that you compared the downrange energy reality.

@@Bullets4Bucks Since you're comparing the new 6.5 PRC, you might want to compare against the 6.8 Western instead of the 270 wsm. The 6.8 Western and 270 wsm are virtually identical.
The 6.8 and the 270wsm are basically the same except barrel twist which allows longer bullets to be stabilized in the 6.8

I used to shoot Barnes 150 gr out of my 300 wsm. Absolute screamer at over 3300 fps. And less recoil.
@@wasachevyguy That's what I was thinking. That velocity difference would make the energy out to 1000 yards even greater.
Anything with a .540" bolt face is a magnum. Anything under around 2.8" is short action.......combine the two and you get a short action magnum.
You know what's crazy is that if you cut the 300 wsm down to 18" you still have a 500 yard elk and 800 yard deer gun. Run the ballistics on a 168 MKZ going 2900 fps. That is my setup for deer and elk.
I actually got an 18" barrel built for my Tikka and it shoots the Norma 180gr Bondstrike at 2940 fps and that's a .615 BC bullet. The WSM easily beats the PRC for Energy on target.

You completely left out the problem of high rate of twist on barrel life and the corresponding spin drift calculations of the long skinny bullets.
The 6.5 PRC is awesome for long range deer and antelope and targets. I've had a lot of success with mine over the past two seasons. Hunting the Montana prairie the wind is bad and the shots can be long. Especially for antelope. But the round is low recoil so it's fun to shoot in the off season. High BC bucks the wind really well.
But I'm thinking about a 300 wsm barrel for elk. But I'm pretty sure the PRC would work if the shot wasn't too far. But what's wrong with having another caliber option😂

I have a question pertaining to barrel life and accuracy. It was mentioned in a comment that both the 300 WSM and the 6.5PRC both get around 1500-1600 rounds out of they barrel, before you start to see a change in accuracy. At that point what is the accuracy like? How much did the groups open up from there?
Good question.
I'm thinking at that 15-1600 mark it varies depending on how the rifle was used and cared for. If it was pushed hard you will likely see a greater degradation then one cared for cooled and cleaned properly and a more gradual decline.
In my experience, you lose velocity and the accuracy becomes inconsistent and annoying. You start missing, clean it real good, check the bore with a borescope, and then cry and smash your piggy bank for a new barrel.
When you're 1600 rounds into a rifle, you're not shooting 100 yard groups to check how bad the MOA change is. You just start missing and hate it.
It can get as bad as 2-3 MOA, though. It depends how long it takes you to be annoyed by the accuracy loss.
I have found in the hundreds of rifles I have owned over 60 years is that a stainless barrel and a carbon fiber stainless barrel will last a lot longer and is even more important in the magnums for barrel life !

Idk about most of the stats your giving but I do know this at 930 yards in 7-8 mph winds I needed about .5 to .75 moa wind correction out of a 200 gr eldx but I use custom hand loads to so...... maybe the results I get are idk maybe I guess unfair ?

The recoil on the 300 wsm feels like slightly more. Neither one has terrible recoil in my experience although much about felt recoil cones down to the rifle not the chambering.
The 300wsm has just a little more recoil but it depends on the rifle comb and weight if the rifle and in some of my rifles the are about the same in felt recoil
You mentioned target shooting...If that includes competition shooting, the 300 WSM is way chosen more often for 1000 yards bench and F-Open for a variety of reasons. Much better throat life with the 300 WSM, which is another reason it is used in fixed position bench and prone comps over the larger 6.5 cartridges, including the smaller 6.5-284.

Sectional density only matters with bullets that do not blow to pieces . The eldx blows to pieces on game . 300wsm all day . Mine liked the accubond long range (190 grain ) and the federal terminal ascent in a 200 grain. The 300wsm is a far superior large game hunting cartridge . The 6.5 prc is neck and neck with a 270 win loaded with 150s
I am shooting 225 ELDM out of my 300 WSM at 2700 fps. It has a G1 ballistic coefficient of .777. I don't see anything in a 6.5 coming close to that.

Most newbs are NOT going to take a 500 yard shot! The newbs are recommended to take kill shots at up to 350 yards! If you like to walk then you can close the distance to 300 yards!

I have one with a 26.5" barrel and, it's moving the 200 into the 2900s and the factory 180 Norma bondstrike is above 3k... It would be nice to know if the 6.5 or 300WSM have a benefit to extra length...
You only get about 50 - 100 ft per second for every two inches you add on average so you have to ask to you really need that extra 2 inch of length out hunting?

300 WSM all day long for taking big game . 165g or 180g Partition or 200g Edge TLR would be my choice for bullets . IMO Edge TLR is superior to ELDX.
If I was going for Long Range Bolt Gun and being used for Hunting the PRC is the obvious choice .

That's really not much of a difference in ft lbs of energy, only 400 ft lbs. Berger has great ammo. A 156gr going 2960 making around 1800 ft lbs at that distance. Lot less recoil, cheaper to shoot, and better when adjusting for wind. Within the first couple hundred yards the 300wsm owns it in energy.

Over 300wsm you minus well go with the 270 wsm. It will out perform 6.5prc
I'm gonna call BS. I think the superior hunting cartridge is the one you can shoot more accurately. Which as you said is the 6.5. Shot placement is everything when hunting especially at long range. Which brings up my next point, 1000 yard hunting shot is very very rare, I've actually never met anyone who has ever shot anything other than a target at those ranges. So comparing ballistics out to that is ridiculous. 600 yards i feel is a more realistic extreme. Even then your going to have a hard time seeing through a spotting scope or whatever your using to truly identify why you want to shoot that animal. I'm not disagreeing with you that the 300 wsm is a powerful round built especially for big game and can be accurate. Hell Chris Kyle's favorite round was the 300 wsm. But unless you are hunting bear or moose or in Africa hunting some other big game I think the 6.5 prc will get the job done even with Elk and Moose.
Based on 4DOF and using factory load data - If you use 147 ELDM as a comparison - this brings things surprising closer at 1000 than 143EDLX. at 900 - 1000 they are neck and neck.
Agreed, 300 WSM when it hits carries more energy, but energy ain't nothing if it isn't in a place that matters.
However, if you include wind and spin and drop. PRC is much easier to get on target. If you add in increased shooter error, due to increased recoil, this magnifies.

Nonsense. Look at f class. WSM is an outstanding long range cartridge and a much better choice for long range if you can manage recoil. Long range shooting and PRC comps are not the same thing.

The 300 WSM is cool because if you load max OAL, it's short action. The cool thing about the 6.5 PRC is it's half an inch longer, the definition of long action, and people call it short.
The 300 WSM is cool in that I can get 350fps more out of my heavy bullets than running 308.
The 6.5 PRC is cool in that I can get 100fps more than my 6.5 Lapua, but probably 50fps more than Creedmoor.
I don't get 6.5 PRC. It is lacking balls and is long action. The box says 2900fps out of a 28" barrel, but Creedmoor gets 2850 out of a 24" barrel. Sooooooo... wtf?
