      Razatti, very cool you had your Great Great Granddad's Epiphone brought back to life, what an heirloom to haven the family... I've always been fond of early Epiphone instruments, and yours came out very nice. Nice playing too btw, good to see the owner enjoying the finished product. Be well, Tom

      Bucyrus Erie12 Thank you! I’m telling you I thought it was a lost cause until I found this channel. After seeing Jerry dig into so many instruments, I knew he’d be able to pull it off. It’s so amazing we get to keep it in the family. Thanks for watching!

    Very fun to watch you do this Epiphone. The color match on the bindings was really really good!. The owner is very thankful you fixed his great great grandpas guitar when others would not. Every time you do one of these older guitars I learn more. I am in your debt

    Jerry, you are my sensei for everything string-related when I want to set up, repair, or restore an instrument, as I do my own guitar setup and restoration work!
    I am now in the process of restoring my battle-worn 1972 Harmony acoustic, which is my first guitar, thus your video on replacing the bindings is exactly what I needed to see because now I know what I have waiting for me!

    Jerry Great job as always. The owner is sure happy and that’s what counts. FWIW I always do put the “backbow” rig on a neck like that to clamp it into the shape I want it - then run the trussrod nut up to hold it vs risking breaking the truss rod or pulling it out of the other end. And I’m not opposed to putting a washer or two (or 3 ) under the nut when necessary. FWIW2 I have worked on a few old Epis from roughly that era and none of them had that type of truss rod nut. My guess after seeing this is that they may have at one time but somebody long before me probably changed them out rather than buying or making a tool like you did. (What others guitar techs have a metal lathe or know how to use it... not many, if any LOL.) You are a unique case, sir.

      I couldn't see any way of putting any spacers on it. Plus they have to be tiny teevan fit under the end of the fingerboard I'm not sure you could use a spacer at all even if there was a place to put it.

  • @EJP286CRSKW

    Very nice instrument and work. I want it. But re the tailpieces, longer total string length doesn't imply greater tension. As long as the nut to bridge length doesn't change, the length of the rest is irrelevant to the tension required to tune it to any specific pitch.
    I suggest that you can use the choice as to which way around to put the tailpieces to 'voice' the instrument: whichever strings have the longer length to the tailpiece will vibrate in sympathy more than the shorter ones. You just choose which sympathetic vibrations you want more of: bass or treble.
    Steinway pianos take this to another level by ensuring that the string lengths from bridge to peg are in tune, which helps the brilliance of the sound by maximizing sympathetic vibrations (and keeping them in tune).
    Keep up the good work, and keep healthy.

    • @EJP286CRSKW
      @EJP286CRSKW 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I forgot to mention what you no doubt already know, that back in the day these instruments were used with far higher actions than we would tolerate today. You can hear the physical effort on recordings of the era. Django for example. In the 1960s I played a couple of unreconstructed arch-tops owned by friends' fathers, and I can attest to it. I think it was only when Leo Fender got going around 1949 that people realized it didn't have to be that hard, if you made the instrument well enough. So you're making this one a lot more playable than it probably ever was before.

    Very nice job ! Congrats !! At the same time, it's always wise to mention the main risk of using linseed oil : it is a 'spontaneously-igniting oil' ... where one must use very special care with the rags used !! Drying has it give off heat , enough to ignite a rag ... So people: store the used rags appropriately !!!!

    Nothing is harder than binding replacement on old guitars. A friend of my had 1954 blonde cutaway D’Angelico New Yorker with binding issues. New Yorkers have 9 ply-binding…yes 9 separate pieces of stacked binding…very few luthiers would even attempt it. Eventually a luthier agreed to do it…it took 18 months…yes months and it cost $2000.00 to do it. (It’s a $65,000.00 Guitar). A few luthiers quoted 7-9 k for the job. After finishing the New Yorker, the luthier said “…I will never do another binding job……NEVER”

    Excellent work. That restoration was one of the toughest jobs of seen you undertake just one problem after another. As usual you seemed to press on solving each one as it arose. It’s great to see that the customer really appreciated your rare skills. I was surprised to learn that the 1938 guitar actually had an adjustable truss rod, ( even though it didn’t work), I don’t think that Martin started fitting them until the 1960s. Many guitar makers just put a metal bar in the neck, ( if anything).
