I dont know how US Americans always manage to fuck up, old bulletproof BMW engines like the M42/M43/M4. I threat my 318ti (M44B19) like shit (it's a daily bitch) for 6 Years (i bought it with 215000km, and it has now 253000km) It saw only one full oil change with oil filter in 2015 (i just fill up the oil from time to time and use the most cheap oil) one spark plug change in 2015 (the old ones were so used, that it was a wonder how the engine still started like nothing) and one Air Filter Change in 2015. The Intake hose got a big crack (at least 70% in diameter) and the oil was at minimum in the winter for one week before i filled up the oil, and that beast still started like nothing, and was running like a atom clock. In the last 3 years the car stand the most time, because i dont needed a car in that time, one time it stand for 7 month straight, all what i did was: throw in a good battery, turn the key. It took 1 second and that little beast started and did run like a atom clock, with cheapest 15W40 Oil in it, and a big hole in the exaust. Normaly you cant kill a M42/M43/M44, even when you pull it cold, it will take torture like that much longer as the most engines ever produced.
What an awesome first car! Or in my case, my favorite car I've ever owned and I've had many. I currently drive a $2500 ti or a 75K truck depending on my mood. The BMW gets driven a lot more tho and prefer it honestly. If I could buy one new, I would in a heartbeat.
My stepdad has a 318 that’s been sitting in the driveway for a year and I finally convinced him to put it in my name and all it really needs is a radiator fan
These cars went nuts in terms of price. Don't expect to pick one up on decent condition for much less than 5K now. Hell there is one listed for $17995 with a manual and a 4 badger, stock car
I enjoy watching your videos. I am in the middle of a project of my own having a hard time finding parts. I am doing a manual swap if you have any information about where I could possibly go to find some things it would be greatly appreciated. I am located in Oklahoma as well
I have this car with the 4 speed GM transmission.Works fine in Economy(E)mode but in Sport mode it will not shift into 4th gear at all ,1st 2nd and 3rd all good, just will not go into 4th.There are no warning lights to indicate any problem. The car is very low mileage(35'000) with full service history.Would anyone know what could cause this as it seems very strange!
Bought mine new in 98, still in nearly as new condition. Of course costs a fortune to keep it that way. These are great cars, mine is a factory ordered M-SPEC 5 speed. I plan on being buried in this car
Its the ews, the 318ti’s have notorious problems with that. The ews stops communicating with the key and wont start over. My only known fix is to do a ews delete but it obviously devalues the car. You could also try getting a new key and ews and install. The car runs obd 2 so only the key and ews need to connect to start. The DME does not matter in these cars
I have this car. Its not starting. It was my boyfriends, he put it in my name two days before he passed away. Unfortunately is needs lots of work. Id def dont want to
@@jspeedracing definitely could if the valves are open during both the exhaust and compression strokes. However, adding oil to the cylinder and seeing an increase in compression would not happen if the valves were open anyway. I would guess rings are shot, possibly due to oil starvation. Might have been low, or sludge, bad oil pump, etc. Just general advise that works on any motor and who reads this comment and needs such advise.

Just got my 318 as my first car a month ago. Clearing up some problems with it, mostly cosmetic problems thank god. It’s a great car
That's awesome! Sounds like a lot of fun.

Ya they getting $$$$!
Very nice. Pull the engine, sell the automatic gearbox and store the car for a future project! Keep saving them!!!
I like the way you think :)
Just bought the same 318ti today. Its red & it has the black front bumper as well
I found one w 170k miles for under 5k. Manual. Pretty nervous but fuck it
I bet Mustie could get that thing running.

Thanks! Ive personally never done a manual swap before. Id say keep an eye out in the salvage yards and marketplace.

Should have sprayed whole can of brake-cleaner. I have not seen a 36 that does not start, if there is spark and fuel at the engine.

Make sure it doesnt leak, if it doesnt leak check water pump and thermostat. Check oil too, could be headgasket
Check if the fan kicks if doesn’t check fuses or relays.

Compact M rear bumper. Just because of that its a good deal, those are hard to find.
I got one on my ti but previous owner split it by blowing a tire so its stitched with zipties

what causes the fires on these?
How the hell u can pull automatic like that? 😂 u cant roll or pull it... otherwise u will need to swap it to manual 🙈
It might be bad timing
Hey Ben. Ya we checked it, it was difficult to determine. Do you think that would cause low compression?
