      Hi! The 316i E36 has the same 1.9l (1895cc) engine as the 318i. but it's down tuned down from 125hp to 105hp. At least my 316i from 2000. Seems some also had a 1.6l 102hp.

      Downshifting can work if you're careful, but can be sketchy sometimes, and it's not something I'd reccomend to someone beginning to drift. Also, the effect that occurs when you downshift, and the tires slip when you change into the lower gear, is called rev mismatching. If you match the revs when you change gear like you normally would when driving, the car won't slide, because the engine revs will match those of the drivetrain and of the wheels. Rev mismatching upsets the car, and basically acts like a handrake, although it feels different because of the downshifting.

  • @OppoA-ek4ut
    @OppoA-ek4ut ปีที่แล้ว +760

    Wouldn't recommend the downshift technique too much as there is a high possibility of over revving the engine if not careful. Clutch kick with flick the best ✌🏻

      Indeed, not to mention the diff takes a beating. Especially on dry pavement. On gravel and snow it’s fine but dry pavement wears them down.

    Low HP sliding has it's magic cause once you get it right it's truly rewarding. Clutch kicking can seem like a brutal misstreating your car but feels hella good also proper weight transfer is important it doesn't come for free like in a turboed monster you have to keep the car up to speed and huge steering angle will slow you down too much and I like this balanced drifting where every mistake is punished

    I also have an e36, Braking right after the flick can help since the whole weight of the car goes to the front and the rear loose grip, then you can manage the drift with good throttle control, another thing is to over inflate the tires so you have less grip surface, 3.5 bars is more than enough in my opinion since when the tires get hotter the pressure inside gets more

    You can lose traction in 2 ways: by having the rear tires spin slower than the front tires (the actual speed of the car) by handbraking or by having the rear tires spin faster than the front, by clutch kicking or downshifting. Not the other way around. When you clutch kick or downshift, the rear tire will try to match up with the speed of the engine or the gearing in the case of the downshift, making the rear tires spin faster than you're actually going, thus breaking the traction

    • @johnprice233
      @johnprice233 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      When you downshift without pressing gas during a shift [like he did] the RPM's attempt to match the rotational velocity of the tires by going up. While the RPM's go up, the tire velocity goes down, and they meet somewhere in the middle. That is why if you try to put it in a lower gear without rev matching and your tires don't manage to spin, your car will start to break -> because tire velocity went down.

      ive seen it being used on some "drift training" places, as it is SUPER easy to breack traction like that.
      an easy way could be using a wipers fluid "kit" (motor, tank and tubes) controlled by a button that you can press like you would use the e-brake.

  • @PheliciaBG

    Dont do that on your daily or your dads car seriously..
    clutch kicks and e-brakes are fun and all If you dont mind slowly (or suddenly) destroying parts of your car.
    BUT you're having fun and that's some great drifts on a 100hp car so if you dont mind the damage risk I'll say worth it!

    honestly I am so desperate to learn drifting that I even tried it with my four wheel drive Suzuki sx4 and to surprise of absolutely nobody it didn't work. Until the snow fell, the it worked perfectly. It makes me think that if I just had big enough balls, I could pull it off. I am kinda terrified of rolling or more likely smashing a curb as a already did

    i’ve got a 525i with a m20 in it i want to build up to handle boost later down the road , i know it’s kind of a boat to be a drift car and the m20 doesn’t have tons of power. does it sound like a plausible idea? hard to find a boosted m20 e34 so i like the uniqueness it would bring .

    Hi, I have an e36 compact with the 1.6L engine as yours. At the moment the car has a 3.38 open differential. What ratio do you have on your welded diff?

    • @FahreFilms
      @FahreFilms  ปีที่แล้ว

      I’m not sure, think it’s the stock 316i diff, is 3.38 stock ratio for e36 316i?

    • @giacomobernardi1742
      @giacomobernardi1742 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@FahreFilms actually I don't know... I think that the selection of the ratio was based on different factors. Anyway, an high diff ratio like 4,44 4,27 or 4,10 (mostly found in automatic transmission car or touring models) will help a lot in drifting low power cars. The short Gear ratio will reduce the top speed but allows you to drift in second gear for longer without forcing you to use the first gear and always being almost on the rev limiter. The car will be more snappy even though the power remains the same and the only disadvantage is the loss of reach
