May I also suggest to systematically test the oiler by running the saw over a piece of cardboard and checking for the bar spitting oil over it. Merci Donald !
Here's a pro-tip for ya Donny, when pulling E clips or c rings put a magnet directly in its path. Never lose one again. My mag/demagnetizer cost like $3. Or tear apart a blown speaker for a free magnet.
I screwed up last year and forgot to spray fogging oil in my cylinder before storing it over the winter. Went to start it and it was stuck. In panic mode now as I spray a little PB blaster in the cylinder. Give her a yank and comes free. Fired right up after that. Then I had to sit down a bit to get my heart rate down😂. Forgetting one little thing could be very costly with a Stihl. Mine is 25 years old and still running like a new one. Great video. Reminds me I need to grease my clutch bearing!
Yup, Totally preventable. I hope the owner learned the lesson. I did. Great video to inform everyone of what not to do and how to recognize it if it does. 👍👍 I guess it can be hard to know if the bar and chain are wet, so running the chain fast to oil it and the bar well after use each time is a good idea. Thank you, Don.
The gal in Canada her shop got a brand new stihl chainsaw and the costumer said he had less than 20 hour run time. She tore it down and found the connecting rod broke at the crankshaft. She went ahead and gave them another new saw before she contacted stihl, which they said that was fine
I am an American. First, I am amazed you can do an entire video in your 2nd language. ....... much respect Sir. .... I haven't managed merely English ... your videos are to the point and extremely informative. Your videos are always well lit, focused and clear and concise. Well done Sir.... A big fan. Finally, it's blatantly apparent that you know your subject matter.
I am sure the customer is happy now! The 23rs pro chain is fantastic. One could probably invest in a Sugihara light bar at that price. If I use grease on that bearing the next time I take it apart I find it all over the clutch shoes and the bearing is dry. I have even tried the thickest/tackiest wheel bearing grease with the same result. I have resorted to using silicone spray and a few drops of chain oil on it now. 👍
It’s funny, the last couple of “uncommon” problems you have highlighted have just happened to me within the past month. Your channel is certainly a help. Thank you for your time.
Wow, talk about neglect 😬. I’ve managed to find a few things that made it to the curb that were and easy fix. I’ve been a recent convert to Stihl and can’t believe the prices on replacement parts but they are of great quality and should be for the cost.
I've had my chain freeze to the bar when I took a break to stack some wood while cutting in the snowy conditions. That was fun...but a little time sitting beside the fire took care of that. Not rusted but had the same effect...took me a bit of time to figure it out at first...lol. Cheers from NB
Wow I can't believe you didn't make sure that the oiling system for the chain was working? I am sure you are very familiar with them being plugged up and if the customer put away their saw after using it in the rain the oil didn't repel the water causing it to rust.
Wouldn’t you want to check the oiler and make sure it’s oiling before adding a new bar and chair, especially with all the rust on the old bar and chain?
@@donyboy73 I would have assumed maybe you checked it off camera before you assembled it. Every time I put a new chair on one of my saws I check to make sure it is oiling.
Random question for you Don. What do you like to do when you’re not making videos or fixing stuff? Just for the hell of it I just looked up Oregon bar and chains on Amazon, not a bad deal for us here in the states. Always a good idea to compare different replacement parts if the option is available or a person isn’t using a saw on a professional level.
Great video . I have one question . Ms 271 and a Ms 290c both looks like melted brake stop handle where exhaust comes out and hits it. Had 2 go lately same guy so it maybe something he is doing wrong . Who knows lol Happen both times cutting posts for golf course in the yard . Never seen this before and I’m not a young man lo
Well Done, Don... 😉👍 No Sir, I most definitely Would Not send a rusted chain back out the door, and that bar Did have a heat or wear pattern. It does make me wonder if it ran short of bar oil at the end of the day ? 🤔 As the Old joke goes... You Rarely see a rusty chain saw... 😂
Why the heck do they use an odd number of drive links? In the good old days we had either 11", 13" or 15" bars for the .325 chains to keep the number of cutters even, left and right. There is no justification to use 16" bars on these saws. Are Stihl flirting with the middle of the road pack?
Basically money. This keeps owners coming back to dealers for the chains. While at the dealership they also purchase Stihl mix and bar oil. Oh, there's also walking past the new saws on display.
Come to think of it, Donny ? 🤔 I think I might tune that bar oil up a notch... For treated pilings working on the water a fella might want that bar and chain positively Gooey ! 🙀 But he still needs to clean them well before he puts it away... ☝️🤨 Treated lumber produces a particular insidious type of rust on a level with Battery Acid ! 😖 Good thing you retired that chain, for Safety's Sake ! 😳 YEAH... It practically Welds the chain in the bar !!! 🤷🏼♂️
Actually, that Stihl bar is almost the same price if you convert it to USD. Stihl OEM parts prices are crazy, who do they think they are, John Deere or Honda? I'd go Oregon every time unless the customer demands the right to pay more.
Yeah, it's a $2 difference. Canadians always seem to think they're getting ripped off, but a lot of things are cheaper there than the US. Which makes zero sense, given the difference in economies of scale.
I did see this allot in Construction Saws. A combination of cutting treated lumber, and Carpenters that weren't used to protecting or storing Forestry equipment in the elements, or properly maintaining gas powered equipment. Nobody thought it was their responsibility unfortunately ! 😤
I'm not trying to insult, but this customer is a perfect candidate for a battery saw. He doesn't want to learn even the basics of operation and maintenance, and a battery saw is something that will work for him for a few years and then he can throw it away and buy another.
Meh... Not Really. 🤷🏼♂️ You still have to maintain the bar and chain, and most Battery Saws have thinner bars and chains that are quite honestly a bit fragile in comparison. 😕 Most are optimized specifically for electric motors, and opt for speed, and low surface area, over torque, and strength. Cordless tools have their own quirks, and challenges. Not the least of which is the SAME "Apathetic" operator. 😒
FTR: "Quality" Cordless Tools ARE Expensive and anything but throw aways ! 😳 I DO follow your observation certainly, but there aren't many solutions for Operator Error... 🤷🏼♂️ Nothing is ever truly Idiot Proof... Merely Idiot "Resistant" ! 😉
Morning donyboy73. I had same experience with my next door neighbor. I am just a old timer and showed him the problem. He bought the new parts inside and out. Cleaned up and put back together. To my surprise got a bonus from him. Always something with people that don't take a little time to take care of the equipment. 😮😢🦅🦅🦅🫠

its just amazing that some people just wouldnt do anything to maintain their machine and that happens. that is just pure neglect or just ignorance.
I'm equally amazed that someone who owns and runs a chainsaw can't distinguish between a seized motor and a seized chain!

The chain stuck on the bar rusted on the bar because of rust 😮😮 well at least you know what to do with that problem Donny

What do people recommend applying to the chain after using the saw to prevent rust? Wd-40?

It's to keep parts proprietary until an aftermarket comes available. You can get this bar and chain from Oregon now.
