Getting stuck in snow and what to do: Your moving along, tires start to slip, you lose momentum until it stops you. Let off the gas immediately when you feel sinking instead of forward motion. Now usually you can reverse at this point but if you didn't stop acceleration in time you may find yourself bogged. DO NOT SPIN YOUR TIRES. Survey the situation from outside. Use a shovel to clear from infront of behind your tires. You want to clear any humps in front of the tires in the direction you would like to go. If bottomed out on frame clear snow as needed. Vehicle should move on its own. Now for the traction boards. Notice we didn't use them but they do have a place. Say if you were perpendicular to some big icy ruts and you didn't want to waste time digging. Fit a trac board in-between the tire and the rut to climb up it no problem. They're also good for filling really washed or deep voids. If you know a section of track will give you hassle. Try laying some traction boards out to help make it through. My .02. Imo shovel is #1 solo recovery tool.

Get a BOLT brand cable lock for your Max Trax. The lock learns your vehicle ignition key to unlock it so you’ll always have the key for it and you won’t need to try remembering a combination anymore.
Big thanks for the tip! Just order one from Amazon. Problem solved ha ha! Looked like a fun day you had on the Apalachicola National Forest Trail. I left a comment and subbed.

I take it you had the rear locker or ATRAC on? Assuming that since one board per axel rarely works out with open diffs. Also looks like our backyard! Those roads sure do get supper slick... and we're very familiar with how playful the back end of the 4runner can get 😆
Yes, indeed that is your backyard! I had my back locker on and also my front locker (ARB air locker). You have a great eye for detail. Most people would not have notice the 1 board per axle and thought about open diffs. Loved your Casey LaDelle video!
@@OverlandPNW I'm sure being triple locked gives you a lot of options. Our Tundra is still open front and rear, we discovered pretty quickly that the cross-axle approach doesn't work. I know is not safe if your in area like town or some place with few different people but... when you go for day trip with friends... I think is better to take of the padlock. But this is my thinking.... is not the same for everyone.

You must have notice that I laid down the traction boards cross axle! Good eye for detail. Yes, I have the ARB air locker on the front axle. I had it installed when I had 4:88 gears installed.
This is why I always take lock loppers. Invariably, I will have forgotten a lock combo or the key is someplace, but probably at home on the kitchen table. 😅😂😵💫

The best thing to use under the tire on ice is ashes from a fire... Works every time, you should do a video on that...I save my ashes in a coffee can for such a use...
I know about forgetting combos, that's why all of my locks are keyed. The trick is bring the keys with you when wheeling! Yep that's a note to self! My son is still laughing!
Framed out sand mountain Hurricane Utah. Had to cut the locks and just like you I must have made a dozen trips around and into the truck looking for the keys. 2wk later found them in the fold of the seat cover. Passenger side where my son was sitting! Yep he's still laughing!
Thank you for this fantastic video! I´m thinking about buying some boards for my Hilux. Unfortunately we don´t have much snow here. And usually I don´t do offroading. And if the streets here are icy, it takes only an hour until they are full of salt und warning lights. Maybe I shoud only buy the lock and put it around my airline rail.

Camping; RTT or Tent? I have been using a T3 Gazelle for the last year…and in some ways I love it, but now find myself leaning towards a RTT. What do you guys think?
I'm a big RTT fan. My brother Steve has the Gazelle and loves it. There are pros and cons to both. It really is a personal preference and price thing. The RTT raises your center of gravity. That's not a big deal unless you are doing very serious obstacles. I like being off the ground. We had a bear in camp one night that stood on its hind legs on our rigs (I was with another guy that had an RTT). The bear left scratches on both rigs. It may or may not have bothered us in ground tents. We'll never know. I'll let my brother chime in on his thoughts on ground tents.
The question of the decade. As Jon stated, he’s an RTT fan, while I’m pro ground. They both have a list of pros and cons. Perhaps a future video should include why we each prefer our setup???
I did two big solo multi-week trips last year.. Cape Flattery WA to Puerto Peñasco Mexico and a ID, MT, NM, CO, UT loop… pretty much moved every night to a new location.. camp set up and break down every day started to wear me down… wind, rain, hail, snow.. you name it… I am looking to head out again and fine tuning my set up… asking myself would a RTT and a Goose Gear drawer system save me time at the beginning and end of each day?
You guys are hilarious. Leave the traction boards inside. As a teen I would take my 68 positrack elcamino to drive around in desert conditions. When I got stuck I used a 6 foot two by 12. I'd jack up the rig, no high lift needed, but I had a good 2x6 under the jack about three feet long so it wouldn't sink the jack in the sand. Then Id put the long 2x12 under the tire, lower the rig onto the board and drive right off, then id need to be on ground where I could lose momentum by stopping, and I'd run back and pick up the boards toss them in the bed and head out.
I have never used such devices. However, decades ago, I was in a situation where a cousin used his home made version of traction boards that worked like a charm. (the only time I did not have my own recovery gear) In this situation, I would have opted for a Hi-Lift jack and strap to the trees behind you. Or come along winch. (since the others were clearly being obtuse) After recovery, I would have driven in the opposite direction leaving them to fend for themselves. ;)
CLEARLY you have been swayed by my brothers clever editing 😏. If I had spun out, Jon would have filmed every detail of my self extraction…from his warm vehicle! 😆

What are your preferred resources for finding dispersed camping spots? Just got into some light overlanding last year and looking forward to this summer!
Gaia is the best mapping app right now. I usually flip back and forth between a high res satellite layer and the best available topo map for the area (usually USFS 2016 when in National Forests). Look for roads that intersect with creeks, lakes and viewpoints on the topo map, then switch to satellite to search for open areas with evidence that there is a campsite (fire rings and vehicles mostly). Mark a few options down before your trip since some of them might not be real sites, or may already be occupied.
It has really just been a process of exploration for us. On all our trips, we try to get off the main corridor forest service roads. We look for spur roads and explore them. Some times it is just a dead end. Other times we fine a spectacular camp spot. We use Gaia or OnX maps to get a rough idea of what might be there. This can be time intensive. So, another good way is to go to some of the meet-and-greets that the local overlanding shops do. You can get connected with people and do some group outings and find some spots that way.
Jon is spot on. I think we’ve found 99% of our favorite spots just by exploring areas we like, our around lakes and river. We’ve had some pretty rough sites too, usually because we’re trying to find a spot in the dark.

My Maxtrax mount is called a "Maxtrax Rear Wheel Harness" and it is available on the Maxtrax website and other online stores. My friends mounts are DIY. He has a fabrication shop. He's helped me with a few things. For example, my swing out has a shovel mount on it that he welded to it. Nice to have friends with shops!
Well they definitely help keep the laughs going, that's for sure. And they do help me get a daily workout in. Hmmm, oh and Steve did make that suggestion at the end on where to put the Maxtrax. But, a tow rope would have been nice ha ha!
So traction boards are great for self recovery, as demonstrated here , however did the other 2 vehicles not have a strap to attach to the obvious recovery hitch on your rear bumper?
Just watched your rear winch video and subbed. Yeah, at least one rear-receiver mount winch in the group would be great for so many situations! It is added to the list!

With that trail, it looks like you guys are auditioning for a place on ice road truckers. I have a very similar lock for my recovery boards, and I've had a fear of not being able to get the cable lock off. So I switched over to a key lock, which means I will just end up losing that.
I just tell my wife the combo and let her know if I can’t open the lock I’ll have to cut it, and that will cost money; she never forgets when money is involved. 😄

What is your experience with putting the traction boards back on your 4R? I just installed mine (Prinsu roof rack) and the limits are so tight that as soon as I use the boards they will never get back on the pins due to bends and twists in the boards.Great video and thanks.
The wheel mount system I use works great. Easy on and easy off. My brother has a roof rack mount system that also works without and problems. I'm not sure what system he uses but he is at @aired-downoverland9239.

@@OverlandPNW love to hear that 😁 would highly highly recommend Western Australia. Lots of 4WD TH-camrs there too if you guys need a convoy 🤙
Thanks for the video
That is sooo funny mate. I guess they know you couldn't remember the combination now lol. Cheers Steve
I solved the lock combination problem by getting one of those locks that learn the key to your car. No more combinations to forget ha ha!
@@OverlandPNW I have one of their cable locks, a trailer hitch lock and a couple of their padlocks. It’s great not adding extra keys to my key ring for all of them.
@@OverlandPNW the Apalachicola ride was an exploration ride. We were trying to find a route through the forest from one city to another. We found a route and drove 90 miles through the forest to get there. It was a fun ride.
Yep, got one

LOL! Man you forgot combination! Kinetic Rope! We make them... Glad you guys have a blast together!
Oh they both had kinetic ropes. That kinda makes it even worse ha ha! The funny thing is...when I sat down to edit the video, I was planning on showing some obstacles that we tackled but I saw this footage and I laughed so hard I decided to make a stand alone video. Half the stuff those guys do and say, I never see or hear until I watch the all the raw footage.
@@OverlandPNW 🤣🤣 So cool! Yeah the video turned out super funny! Man It's good to see people not stressed out during a stressful situation.
We actually, in all seriousness, love getting stuck and practicing the use of different recovery tools and techniques.
@@aired-downoverland9239 Nice!
Glad you enjoyed the Casey video, and looking forward to seeing more of our favorite camping area in your next episode ;)

Hi, I m from Canada Qc, and the winter is hard here.....i never use padlock during winter... even if you have the key or the combination... everything frozen... .... with key you can use some small torche... but ...... I know is not safe if your in area like town or some place with few different people but... when you go for day trip with friends... I think is better to take of the padlock. But this is my thinking.... is not the same for everyone.
That's a great suggestion. Just take the lock off on a day that you are going to hit the trails!
great video!!!!
Brotherly love 😁
Look up a video on how to get into those locks, I’ve never remembered a combination for ours because they’re extremely easy to crack.
Loving your videos. Thank you
You guys are hysterical. Thanks for the laugh!

That road was incredibly slippery. Good times!
Yeah, you almost slipped just walking on it.
Slippery, yet two of three had no problem navigating them 😮
Great video. Looks like you have lockers front and back. Is that correct?
You must have notice that I laid down the traction boards cross axle! Good eye for detail. Yes, I have the ARB air locker on the front axle. I had it installed when I had 4:88 gears installed.
This is why I always take lock loppers. Invariably, I will have forgotten a lock combo or the key is someplace, but probably at home on the kitchen table. 😅😂😵💫
Great video and great fun. However, I am wondering why don't you use snow chains?
One of the guys in our group uses chains. I seldom do. Probably should of in this situation ha ha.
This was a phenomenally funny video guys!

I was waiting to see if your brother was as going to “help” you by breaking out a recliner and some popcorn!

You guys are great!! It must be such a joy to have that hobby with your brother and son. Looking forward to watching more adventures
Thanks! Yes, it is definitely a ton of fun to have both my brother and son live close by to share adventures and laughs!
The best thing to use under the tire on ice is ashes from a fire... Works every time, you should do a video on that...I save my ashes in a coffee can for such a use...
Doesn’t anyone use studded tires anymore?
You sure don't see them as much as you used to. Seems like they'd be great on roads like this.
I know about forgetting combos, that's why all of my locks are keyed. The trick is bring the keys with you when wheeling! Yep that's a note to self! My son is still laughing!
Oh man...there must be one heck of a good story behind that comment ha ha!
I seriously need to invest in traction boards 🤙🏼

What type of tires did you use?
I have BF Goodrich KO2 tires on my 4Runner. Cheers!
Think this was a tire choice tire traction problem for him. But good recovery and grest fun with your crew .. 😎👍🏽
Could be. I run BF Goodrich K02s.
Nice I run BFG Ko2's on my 2003 Silverado overland truck. But just tried out MT Baja Boss AT and they are impressive tires. Got them on my 2015 Duramax and got 65k on them best tires ever owned
On such ice I have done a complete 180° with my 1st gen Tundra while towing a utility trailer all accomplished with zero input from gas/brakes/or steering. It is like the truck is possessed and spinning on an invisible pole stuffed upright in the middle of the rig. Lots of opportunity for good natured ribbing. Regards.🇨🇦

I am thinking a RTT vs. Tent/Gazelle video prós/cons while you guys are on a camping trip would be great!
@@Pamela_PNW I agree and will try and make that happen
I did two big solo multi-week trips last year.. Cape Flattery WA to Puerto Peñasco Mexico and a ID, MT, NM, CO, UT loop… pretty much moved every night to a new location.. camp set up and break down every day started to wear me down… wind, rain, hail, snow.. you name it… I am looking to head out again and fine tuning my set up… asking myself would a RTT and a Goose Gear drawer system save me time at the beginning and end of each day?
Where did you get the shovel with the sheath/cover?
The shovel sheath/cover came with a different shovel I have called the Krazy Beaver Shovel. I bet they sell the sheath separately on their website.
Lol! 'Simulation' part 😂
So rear locker was engaged to get power to the maxtrax, otherwise both maxtrax needed in the back
Yes, correct and good observation!
You can have a winch, Trax, shovel, roof top tent, refrigerator, gps, awningand all that other overland crap. But nothing makes up for driving skills.
Love the 2x12 story! The stuff we did in 4x4s when we were teens....someone should write a book!
(since the others were clearly being obtuse) After recovery, I would have driven in the opposite direction leaving them to fend for themselves. ;)
I have a come along but usually don't take it when I with a group of "helpful" people. I might just start taking always ha ha!
CLEARLY you have been swayed by my brothers clever editing 😏. If I had spun out, Jon would have filmed every detail of my self extraction…from his warm vehicle! 😆

Hey I know this video is a little old but what bracket do you have holding the traction boards?
The traction board holder is called a MAXTRAX Rear Wheel Harness. I Googled it and it came up on BackCountry. So, they are sill made and sold.
You can’t park there! 🤣 classic

Are you guys local to Seattle wa I am new to this world of overlanding. I plan to buy the redesign 4Runner
That will be a great 4Runner! But nope, we are not local to Seattle.
What is that mount for your maxtrax you have? Also what is that mount for your friends rota pack/ propane bottle?
My Maxtrax mount is called a "Maxtrax Rear Wheel Harness" and it is available on the Maxtrax website and other online stores. My friends mounts are DIY. He has a fabrication shop. He's helped me with a few things. For example, my swing out has a shovel mount on it that he welded to it. Nice to have friends with shops!
Looks like the trout lake area. ??
So nice when you have helpful people surrounding you.

Oh yeah...they had straps. They were just having too much fun watching me trying to get myself out of the predicament.
Look at the guys sprinting to help me😀

Rear winch would have been two mins to get out!
Just watched your rear winch video and subbed. Yeah, at least one rear-receiver mount winch in the group would be great for so many situations! It is added to the list!
