The number 1 thing to do when stuck, in ANY vehicle, no special items needed. Air down! Drop air pressure down to 12-15psi, you will now have about 3 times more traction!
I'm super glad that you actually showed what can go wrong like not having a locker for the ladder rope and how to high lift Jack does damage that it can do thank you I enjoyed this video as I am a off-road recovery specialist you did a good job
Interesting video I’d like to make some recommendations if that’s OK . One I wouldn’t really be into that Chinese one I don’t think it would hold up overtime. As for land anchors i’m not really a fan I think it’s a big heavy piece of gear to carry with you that works some of the time not all of the time, it’s very hit and miss. Traction boards absolutely love the shovel crucial part of any recovery kit. Deadman you were using a little incorrectly you need to go over the instructions again. You laid a dead man down and the size of the patch is the size of the hole you did you dig the hole approximately 2 feet deep you fasten the front two straps to your winch light and a back two straps to the front straps with a shackle this way all four straps pull at the same time. I would also recommend pulling your winch line much further out and digging the hole further away from the truck the more line you takeoff your winch spool the more pulling strength the winch has. Hi lift Jack my little tips for this would be to have a baseplate salted Jack doesn’t sink down into the sand and making it much more stable. I would’ve also move the Jack towards the rear door and open the door and then jack up the truck this way if the jack was to slip it falls in towards your truck going into the open void of the back doing no damage to the bodywork or the window it would be nothing worse than having the jack slip and putting a big dent in your truck. These are just some of my thoughts I hope you don’t mind.
I thought you said underrated exercise method. If you said that I would have totally agreed with you. I've used it twice, once when I had drained all my transmission fluid so the truck wouldn't go forward, but I was almost to the crest of the hill (and downhill from there to the paved road), and the other time, the hill was too steep for the old 4Runner to get up it (no torque). It worked both times, but I had to take several breaks and was quite sore the next day.
I don't consider it to be a poor man's winch I consider it to be a backup winch if the regular winch Burns out or has some motor problem the hi lift will get you unsuck it doesn't have to be considered a poor man's winch at all. We once drove into a high dense forest area camped for 5 days and had a wonderful time the storm hit and down the lot of the trees on the road we used the winches on the trucks and also the high lift winches declared the road it made the job go a lot faster having a couple of hi lift to do some winching as well be.
Manny years ago as a young pup I remember when we had to turn a vehicle around on an icy snowy road. The high lift got it done. Far from OSHA approved lifted as high as it will go then push it so the Jack falls over, and repeat as needed.
Great video! Too many people don't try out their recovery devices until they're SOL. The "efficiency" of the Maxtrax has made them my 3rd goto tool of choice in the snow behind airing down and a shovel. I still carry chains for those extra sketchy routes or for drift busting, but haven't used them to get unstuck since getting the boards.
I’d start with air down your tires. Also please lube your farm jack. Definitely should have lowered the truck down more. I have all these tools. Been meaning to make this video for years but never did. Glad you did. !
to go off road, number one item is a air compressor, so you can fill up the tires when you get back to pavement. then a 4 ton come-along. i have never understood those back boards, but then i do not wheel at the beach. wenches are great to have, as well as extra cable, a number of "rated" D-rings, not the cheap trash from communist china. a jerk strap, tree protector, two rated pulleys. dead weight on a cable (even the plastic ropes) are the shipping pads sold at u-haul. weight on the winch line and padding for the tent floor. that can get out of almost everything. BUT bring at a min one gallon of water per person per day. and food for two days. if you get stuck, break down. you need to eat and drink water. as some times it will be at least one or two over nights. but then even in normal days you must keep such in your car. like last week i was stuck in stopped traffic for over 2 hrs. did not move one inch. then bring clothing. for hot temps. and freezing temps. and just to change out if you fall into cold water and it is not 100F that day. got a good cb? ham radio? not all places have cell service...but if your rich a satellite phone. set up like this you can be safe. a friend broke his shoulder, it was just a crack. but required a air lift out. (at the dam on the rubicon JEEP trail).
Good video. One thing to add on the rope ladder idea...its not new and ive used a very similar technique in the past. If you only have one and you don't have a locker you can apply the brakes or emergency brake lightly to transfer the torque back to the other wheel.
+10 to this, that brake/e-brake trick by itself can sometimes get an open-diff vehicle out of a bind. Especially all-wheel drives with open-diffs. (from personal experience :))
^^^^ This, I've used this trick on steep, wet boat ramps many times when pulling a boat out of the water. Just manipulate the e-brake until the wheels stop spinning and you'll gain traction.
Using the 5thtire/spair tire works way better than the dead man anchors. You must dig a narrow trench for the cable to be straight and not pull the anchor upward and out. The trench can be done with the dead man anchor but weakens the wall a lot more than just a single cable. Ihad to use the tire trick once in sand and nothing even with the winch pulling over the tire it wouldn’t come out
That land anchor was not developed by the Army. It’s based on the Danforth anchor developed by the Navy in 1939 for landing craft. It does however have a spade, but matriculating spade anchors have been around for over 50 years
Nice video man! I added a 8ft and a 2ft chain with clevis to my kit, easier to adjust the length and you can reset to the new position without moving the straps 👍
The HI lift jack is useful but also the most dangerous of the option for recovery. I have a fairly light off road rig and have successfully self recovered with a tow strap and a inexpensive come along. Also burying a spare tire or a log works as a good dead man anchors. If one dead man is not enough burying several will increase holding. My home is the first home people come to when they get stuck in the snow. Way too many people are clueless about self recovery.
i had a Situation with a buddys Nissan Navara, the car got stuck in dry sand, 4wd will malfunction and not engage not Diff Lock nothing. we first tied a rope around the wheel as you do with the ladder, then the same happened as in the video the other Wheel keeps spinning. So we had another rope around the other tyre and tied it to the first rope. as we pulled us out, the ropes due to the angle of the ropes slipped off the tyre after 2 Revs and clinched the E-brake cable and a Sensor cable. We got out just before nighttime but makeshift things always comes with a price. Cheers
With the use of one ladder and unlimited slip you should be able to hold the brake with some pressure to eliminate one tire spinning. If done correctly the power will be sent to both rear tires equally.
The last thing - really the first thing is simply to air down and carry an air compressor. Took me years to learn that. The bushranger exhaust jack is a lot safer than the hi-lift jack but not as versatile. I carry both...
When younger, I used to keep a beer under the seat as a back up to stupidity. I really like the strap attached to the wheel trick. Wouldn’t it be nifty to mount traction boards under the truck to double as armor.
If you hold the brake while you are spinning the you don’t want, it should go back and fourth between tires with an open diff. Great way to try and get traction when you don’t have a locker.
Even better advice: Don't do crazy shit to get stuck in the first place. Especially if you're on your own. I travel from IL to AZ most winters to rockhound and hike thru the Sonoran Desert solo and am very cautious while trekking thru the desert environment. If I encounter a situation that gives me pause, I don't risk it. I'll unload the dirt bike and proceed with it if there's something worthwhile checking out up ahead. I need my truck to stay in 1 piece to get me back to IL. Still enjoy your vids, tho.
Yeah and a high lift! There's a reason some people call them Deadman jacks but mine has gotten me out of trouble many times. I finally went an bought a winch.
At 13:00 when the locker was not engaged, if you don't have a locker try pulling up the rear brake lever just a bit to equalize the pressure, thus having the diff partially switch back to the other side.
Great video. One point: a jacket IS NOT ENOUGH to use a winch damper. You want weight. Ideally 5 pounds. Even better, two--each about 1/3 from either end of the cable. Keep everyone well out of the area in case the cable breaks.
How often do you actually use the wench? And out of those times, how many of those were jobs only the wench could handle and not just because of the convenience of it? I've never had a wench but recovery tracks, low tires pressure, disconnected front links, and 4x4 have worked just fine. No diff lockers and no wench and no problem.
Just bought my first real 4wd this year. Haven't gotten stuck off road yet. Im thinking i want to purposely get in trouble so i can gain experience getting out. Ive spent over 40 winters in Maine and have done countless snow/ice recoveries. But never one on a trail.
Great content and thanks for sharing. Appreciate you working hard to film and share the info with us. Of all the methods you showed the strong hand crab claw was definitely the most effective and we will be equipping all of our machines with one going forward. 😂
Pro tip on traction boards. After you dig out enough to get under the tire some let more air out with the board under it. PS Hello from the Snoqualmie Valley fellow Washingtonian.
The deadman and the sand anchor are a waste of time and money, you can do the same thing with your spare wheel or recovery boards, I really like the Bog Out ladder ropes which are pretty light, and the recovery boards are a must. The high lift jack might be handy but is very heavy and bulky.
It is dangerous to use a shackle to connect two straps, try figuring 8 the straps together. That way if something breaks the shackle won’t come flying at you or someone else.
PullPal = Danforth anchor. In this case, collapsible. Be careful with those, as their breaking strength isn't as good as it could be. The beauty of the design is that it digs deeper the more you pull.
A high lift jack is the most important piece of recovery equipment. Even winches fail. If you have traction boards and a high lift, you’ll be able to self extract yourself 99% of the time
even though i know all this info, i like these types of videos, just good ol knowledge transfer, however i believe the deadman has to be folded onto itself a couple times to become the tree saver? not sure if that matters or not.
Save yourself a heap of aggro and carry a long handled shovel. That land anchor is a bit frightening - could see it letting go and coming straight through the windscreen.
Ur ladder thing isn't necessary , take 2 straps wrap one through rim and tie knot do same to other tire, clasp them to another strap either around big tree or anchor and just spin tires slowly until no slack on line then slowly drive out , strap will wrap around tire and pull u out every time. Also ur last thing... It's called a jackall btw and u should mount a pad on bottom and angle it top away from truck so it doesn't dent truck.... Thanks for the video but gotta say a lil noobish :p
Instead of ladder strap just put tow strap through rim then around tire for a poor mans winch. You also forgot about 2x4 and strap them to tires. Nice video.
You could tell max worked hard on this video to make it less vlog and more educational and I appreciate that
The number 1 thing to do when stuck, in ANY vehicle, no special items needed. Air down! Drop air pressure down to 12-15psi, you will now have about 3 times more traction!
I’ve always wondered if airing down made a notable difference.
I guess I just always overlooked it.
What if your already aired down on the trail running 12psi.
Really only effective as long as you have an air compressor back up doesn’t do any good to have a flat tire
@@johnstevens7643 Be kind of odd to be doing this sort of thing and not carry a compressor.
What if you high centred?
I'm super glad that you actually showed what can go wrong like not having a locker for the ladder rope and how to high lift Jack does damage that it can do thank you I enjoyed this video as I am a off-road recovery specialist you did a good job
Re:High lift jack stay out of the handle swing ark and not beside it.✌️

Using a hi-lift as a poor man's winch is the most underrated extration method ever! No one ever thinks of it, or thinks it'll work!
I thought you said underrated exercise method. If you said that I would have totally agreed with you. You just don’t use it on your hoop bar. But rather on the extraction points on the bumper

I used it once with a stuck full size van on an incline. Man that was a rough pull but it worked
Yup they are great. If he would have strapped the axl3 to frame don't have to worry about the suspension
Manny years ago as a young pup I remember when we had to turn a vehicle around on an icy snowy road. The high lift got it done. Far from OSHA approved lifted as high as it will go then push it so the Jack falls over, and repeat as needed.
Nice video. I thought for sure you would have demonstrated snow chains to get unstuck. Maybe next time. Have a nice day.
Next time!
Another tip, first thing you should do if you can't move forward or backwards is lower your tire pressure more.
And use the crawl control....... ive seen people way more stuck in the sand takes a bit but always comes out
thank you
“I was kinda intoxicated and saw an ad...” lmao I feel that one
Great video! Too many people don't try out their recovery devices until they're SOL. Hi lift jack is probably the most useful thing I've used for recovery. Durable, useful, reliable.

The facial expression when putting the truck in park while the rear tire was still spinning 🤣
That sound damaged my soul a little bit...
A cable hoist or come-along is another great tool to carry if you don't have an electric vehicle winch.

Thank you for doing all this hard work for all us lazy off roaders to learn from.
Great content. Awesome Des tool intro! Good work guys! 💪
Another rad video Maxx! Thank you for all the hard work and killer content!
Good video, but damn the intro was the best part for sure.
This was exactly what I was looking for. Thank you!
Nice video man! I added a 8ft and a 2ft chain with clevis to my kit, easier to adjust the length and you can reset to the new position without moving the straps 👍
One of the best 5 ways to get unstuck videos while taking a few extra precautions.
Great job modeling Des! Good video Maxx. Actually was really well done and helpful.

Great video! I know recoveries take a lot of effort, so you all put in some hard work to make this.
That wheel rope thing is pretty cool. Never seen it.
Also good to see the deadman working, but original video for it was hilarious.
You and Des are awesome! The Kids are great to watch as well!
Great video! Very informative and to the point. Thank you!
Glad it was helpful!
Bro you had me cracking up with that smolder 😂😂😂 Appreciate the video, gonna keep these methods on the mind!
Good stuff & you two are hilarious!
Great video ! I've been looking for something like this all over.
i had a Situation with a buddys Nissan Navara, the car got stuck in dry sand, 4wd will malfunction and not engage not Diff Lock nothing. we first tied a rope around the wheel as you do with the ladder, then the same happened as in the video the other Wheel keeps spinning. Woohoo! Free exercise with the Deadman Off-Road Earth Anchor, nice. Good job on the video.
Yeah and a high lift! There's a reason some people call them Deadman jacks but mine has gotten me out of trouble many times. I finally went an bought a winch.
i'm so glad you saw the same ad and actually bought it, i was curiuos if there was any legitamcy to them, thanks!
The anchor in sand was really cool. Not seen that before.
Yeah! It worked really well!
That anchor is simply a copy of the Danforth boat anchor design which have been one of the standards for anchoring boats for over half a century.
At 13:00 when the locker was not engaged, if you don't have a locker try pulling up the rear brake lever just a bit to equalize the pressure, thus having the diff partially switch back to the other side.
Kicking the shovel up off the ground earned my like and subscribe 😂. The video seems to be quality anyway but that sealed the deal.
With open differential and 1 wheel spinning, press brake pedal to send torque to both wheels.
Great video. One point: a jacket IS NOT ENOUGH to use a winch damper. You want weight. Ideally 5 pounds. Even better, two--each about 1/3 from either end of the cable. Keep everyone well out of the area in case the cable breaks.
Great informative video Bro 19:22
anybody who works that hard for a video gets a like and a comment at the very least. Nicely done Maxx!

Kudos to Max for knowing how to do the asian squat!
#1 way to get up-stuck while solo - - -Hey fellow overlander heard you on the radio, here to help! (radio#1)(you are never alone)
That one tire fire though 😂
Just bought my first real 4wd this year. Haven't gotten stuck off road yet. Im thinking i want to purposely get in trouble so i can gain experience getting out. Ive spent over 40 winters in Maine and have done countless snow/ice recoveries. But never one on a trail.
great educational video max!! 👍
thanks! nice work! entertaining and plenty new ideas shared! What's deal with the wet sand? No dry powdery sand around there?? haha
If you have a spare, you can also sink it into the ground and use as a pulling point for your winch. Has worked a time or two 🙄
Great stuff. Really lIke your content.
Great content and thanks for sharing. Appreciate you working hard to film and share the info with us. Of all the methods you showed the strong hand crab claw was definitely the most effective and we will be equipping all of our machines with one going forward. 😂
Great tips man! I need some new recovery boards🤙-Josh
The maxtrax work as a shovel also. Soft sand snow stuff like that.
Pro tip on traction boards. After you dig out enough to get under the tire some let more air out with the board under it.
PS Hello from the Snoqualmie Valley fellow Washingtonian.
Very informative, thanks for sharing.
The best advice I think would be to not put yourself in a bad situation if you don’t have a 4x4 truck
Just saw this. Great video. Thanks.
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for checking it out!
The deadman and the sand anchor are a waste of time and money, you can do the same thing with your spare wheel or recovery boards, I really like the Bog Out ladder ropes which are pretty light, and the recovery boards are a must. The high lift jack might be handy but is very heavy and bulky.

I don't know about you, but it is pretty rare for me to get stuck if I haven't been drinking whiskey all day.
I like your shirt max, I think I have the same one.
Hell yes maxx. Great content!
That rope ladder should work on the front wheels with a working traction control system too. Let the TC figure out where to send the power.
Don’t go solo overlanding. Think about potential breakdowns that might happen and nobody around to help
even though i know all this info, i like these types of videos, just good ol knowledge transfer, however i believe the deadman has to be folded onto itself a couple times to become the tree saver? not sure if that matters or not.
Great info thanks!
That anchor and winch combo looks sketchy. One bad pull and what's stopping that anchor from flying towards you?
Same thing with that dead man anchor
*clicks on thumbnail*
Me: ohhh it’s that kind of stuck video!
I thought that beach looked familiar. I got my VW Vanagon stuck on that beach. LOL
Which Pull Pal Anchor is this? Not sure which model to look for, for the same sized 4Runner vehicle
Instead of the road ladder you can just do the same with a tow strap and just keep a few in the truck
Question: What brand of roof rack do you have and do you hear wind noise? Great vid!
Prinsu, he has a link in description. I think a promo code also of Maxx10.
Killer vid!
For those that know Hi lift jacks, what could have been done to prevent what happened here?
Please tell me What are your wheels ?
Save yourself a heap of aggro and carry a long handled shovel. That land anchor is a bit frightening - could see it letting go and coming straight through the windscreen.
if anything it would lose grip and slide in the ground not pop up
Good stuff!!!
The suicide, jack no thanks. I’m looking at the off-road jacks right now and an airbag Jack.
Wait’ i can get a pretty Blond to help me film if i get stuck.. excuse me, I’m going to find some mud.
Good stuff lol 😆
@4:10 lol not sure your leaf springs are supposed to do that
Is it self extrication or self extraction ?
Dam I need a high lift jack now..... 🥵
I caught the first part with the wifey modeling the stuff. The stuck russian women. Kinda had a laugh. What roof rack do you have btw?
He runs a Prinsu rack.
Instead of ladder strap just put tow strap through rim then around tire for a poor mans winch. You also forgot about 2x4 and strap them to tires. Nice video.
Thanks for the tips!
