It's ridiculous that these people think children learning about gay and bi people will make them become gay or bi. When my son was 5, my lesbian friend who can sew (while I can't) made him a Harry Potter costume for Halloween. He noticed she was living with another woman and asked me about it. I told him that most people like to have a sweetheart of the opposite gender, but some people like a sweetheart who is of the same gender. Curiosity satisficed he went back to admiring his Halloween costume. You know what? Despite the fact that I exposed him to the gay lifestyle when he was that young, he grew up to be completely straight. He also didn't grow up to be a bigot.

    • @stylis666
      @stylis666 ปีที่แล้ว +18

"The gay lifestyle" XD Lol My parents basically taught me the same way. They explained to me: people.... are.... you know... people. And people... love... people! And we don't all like the same people or things and we don't all look the same but we're all still people. Easy peasy lemon squeezy :D
Then later I learned about nazis and republicans and my worldview was shattered until I learned that most of them do still have empathy but that they're so wrong about everything they think they know that they can't seem to apply it to their actual behaviour properly and they rather project their uncertainties on everyone because that's what they're taught is normal and acceptable and they somehow think it's productive.
And my mom also still fucked it up when talking about actual people who are gay. She said things like:" I feel so sorry for my brother for being gay. It's such a hard life." Yeah, mom, it's really hard being gay XD It takes lots of practice and you only get so many chances to try it out :p "You know what I mean! People are not accepting!" Well, then the "being gay" part seems like the easy part and the having to deal with bigotry seems like the hard part, doens't it. And my uncle shrugs and pretends he doesn't know what she's talking about and I'm just laughing my ass off at the both of them. I tried and explain to my mom how her language isn't helping and that instead of saying something completely different from what she means she should try and put to words what she means to say.
So she's like, well I wish he wasn't gay. And I'm like, right, because you still haven't learned where the problem is.
So sometimes instead of that, I just tell her I think that all people who are into men have something wrong in the head. Who in their right mind, with the choice between having sex with a beautiful woman or with a MAN wouldn't choose the woman? :p And she even agreed I have a point and that women are prettier XD Hopeless XD Yes, I did have a point, that we don't choose who we are attracted to. It is very probable that Matt Walsh doesn't actually think the bs he spouts. He just don't care about others. Fascists care about nothing but their side. • @jamiemarchant5787
      @jamiemarchant5787 ปีที่แล้ว

@@gornser I think right wingers still can't get it through their heads that people are born gay, straight, whatever. You can no more make a straight person gay than you can make a gay person straight. They won't accept this. They refuse to even entertain the idea that books like this and other efforts to introduce LGBT+ concepts in the early grades is meant to protect gay, trans children from thinking that there's something wrong with the way they are and hating themselves. They simply would rather have all of these children commit suicide than admit that their 2000 year old book might not be the best source of information. I was raised Mormon in Utah. But Matthew Shepard's murder fundamentally changed my view of LGBT+ people. If you don't know about Matthew Shepard, he was a gay university student who was murdered in 1998. Not just murdered but tortured first. The two men who killed him were Mormon, or at least one of them was. I can't remember exactly and it wasn't easy to find by googling. What they did to him was so horrifying it really shook me up, and I've been an ally ever since.

"Fire in a theater" is a disfavored analogy these days since it's from an outdated Supreme Court case that used it as an excuse to jail socialists circulating an anti-draft petition. But the real question if you're trying to pin other peoples' actions on Walsh is whether the speech is "both intended and likely to cause imminent unlawful action." This is generally an extraordinarily high standard contemplating things like shouting "burn down this building" to a crowd of people already rioting.
As for slander (let's call it defamation) that depends on whether any false facts were stated or implied. While it may seem obvious that Walsh accusing some random author of grooming just because he doesn't hate the gays is a false statement of fact, the legal analysis focuses on the information being communicated, not the literal words. To explain, remember that satire is free speech even when it uses literally false statements to convey an opinion.
And when it comes to public figures, proving defamation requires showing that the speaker/publisher knew an accusation was false or acted with reckless disregard for the truth. That standard is incredibly hard to pass, and typically few things satisfy "reckless disregard" in this context other than publishing an accusation that you know comes from a source that has no credibility, and then not even disclosing that. An author of a children's book is arguably at least a limited purpose public figure with regard to his behavior towards children.
So back to meat and potatoes, isn't Walsh obviously defaming this guy? Well that depends on the information conveyed by the accusation, in context, and there we have a problem. It's a well known fact that this type of conservative considers every LGBT person, a priori, to be a groomer, and all child-oriented-speech even referring to LGBT subjects in non-negative light to be evidence of grooming.
That is, Walsh is neither stating nor implying that he has any actual evidence of grooming behavior, or advocacy for abusive behavior or relationships. Many of his followers can be expected to reach the same conclusion simply from the knowledge that the author doesn't hate gay people.
In general, the first amendment means that you are free to speculate about the reasons public figures act a certain way or advocate for certain things. As long as you don't claim knowledge of events you made up, imply that you possess secret evidence, propose a theory you know for a fact is wrong, or support your theory by presenting evidence not previously known to the public, while also concealing credible but contradictory evidence.
Though to conclude, I'd say that despite the very high standards for proving someone defamed another, given the volume of Walsh's idiotic ramblings and the intensity of his hate, I think there's definitely room for a lot of people to bring lawsuits that courts would entertain for at least a while, even if they would not ultimately succeed (including the author being discussed in this video). There could well be a few winners in there. Though in many states you can be made to pay the defendant if you lose a lawsuit over defamation, and that would only encourage Walsh.

We had a children's science program called "The apple's core" in The Netherlands that featured a particular subject each episode ("How does electricity get to your home?" or "How do they service freight train locomotives?", with the host usually being capable of helping out some people working in the industry or industries they focused on out, while explaining things)
Each episode was intercut with small, 1-2 minute sketches from comedians (I am honestly going to say that just like the program itself overall, the sketches have lost their edge compared to the old days), and most of the times the sketches interconnected with the subject of the episode at hand.
The one with freight train locomotives for instance, poked fun at the national railways about how delays are caused, and what the reasons for them can be, they were usually big exaggerations of adult life.
Most characters of the sketches had a re-occuring role:
There was the overly macho guy who spoke with a lot of saliva consumption and shouted a lot and whose behavior always got himself into trouble (And had the lovely name "Boy Zonderman", which when translated literally into English means "Boy Withoutaman", which basically was a stab back at his personality: being overly macho but basically very hollow as a result :D ).
There was the so called Dirty Chef, which had an unhygienic kitchen with disgusting recipes to go along with (One time an episode was about bacteria and how they spread and cause diseases that way, and his recipe was "Smashed fruitflies", and one of the lines in the sketch was "And because a big set of these fruitflies can be bit heavy on the stomach, we are going to dip them in chocolate sauce!", and the ending of his sketch was always a Dutch reference to meatballs (well in his character's environment anyway) that we also tend to use as a sort of slang way to say goodbye to someone, because he then said "De ballen!" :P )
Some characters also almost solely sang beautiful songs written by some of the most iconic text and song writers my country has ever had (and to be honest, some songs or the way they were performed had to grow on me and are ones that I can appreciate much more as an adult now, even though those types of songs rarely exist anymore on the show).
But probably a set of characters that would cause quite a controversy in some countries were those of 2 elderly ladies: played by 2 men, one of which also played a big role in the Dutch Sesame Street as the Dutch version of the grumpy old man.
One of them was always capable of seeing the more positive side of things, while the other usually saw the negatives, which (probably to no surprise) caused fierce arguments (again strong exaggerations of adult lifes).
One of the modern sketches that to me still resembles that edgy style from the older episodes is Princess Never Enough: A superrude, obnoxious, arrogant princess (played by Dutch actress Tjitske Reidinga) that also get's herself into trouble, but mostly has a big problem with overseeing the steps she needs to take in order to reach whatever unrealistic goal she has set :P .
Before typing out this response I had set out to find a link to one of the old lady sketches, but unfortunately I learned that just as the Dutch version of Sesame Street was requested not to air episodes with the actor that played the grumpy old man anymore after his death, the same has been true for the sketches of the science show he was in.
Given the show is running since 1988, I'm afraid that's A LOT of sketches...

I’m curious to see when the “turning your friends gay” crap your friends parents pulled happened. It’s a stark contrast to how things where when I was in highschool. I did go to an all girls Catholic school in Australia, but us queers where embraced by friends and family, this was around 2005-2008.
It’s really terrifying and utterly heartbreaking to think that that progress, that warmth and embracing we experienced was because we came out in the right time period - when gayness was seeming more accepting for a short time, and the really bad and hardcore internet propaganda hadn’t had the chance to seep into so many peoples minds - or where we just lucky, where we in the right place at the right time?
The school was weird about it, they said no one was allowed to hug my friend when she started dating another girl in the school - as if the gay would rub off. However, that was the weird Catholic school admin, which is expected. But there was a weird, faux vale of respect they tried to hold with us - they never really said we weren’t allowed to be who we where, they had to hide their bigotry - as it should be for bigoted people. But now they have a voice.
I think this is a long winded way of saying that I see all the progress we’ve made dissolving away, and it’s so painful to watch. My queer sisters and brothers who have come after me where meant to feel what I did. They where supposed to be embraced, and loved, and respected! Instead, you’re being abused and your dignity is being taken from you in what is one of the most important times of your life.

I do know someone who chromosomally is XXY and only found out in their 50s that they were intersex. The really horrible part is that from a young age she said that she was a girl and was sent to a psychiatrist (seeing as nothing happened with it I am assuming that she was treated in the conversion therapy way but don't know for sure). It was only when her being intersex was found out when she had an operation (and they found female reproductive organs at that time) that she was suddenly told that she needed to make a choice as to which gender she wanted to live as and so was able to start to transition (higher risk of some cancers iirc because of having both hormones going and being XXY you need to have hormones to supplement anyway). I find it really sad that she was gaslit about it for so many years and then when it could be verified medically suddenly they were OK decisions need to be made right now (though for those times if it had of been discovered earlier probably would have just had her female organs removed).

I wonder if that person then never experienced puberty...typically in cases in which a body having XXY chromosomes, the body will not be producing the right hormones for the body to enter puberty normally, or when it does, the hormones might fail to produce the expected results due to how some mechanisms inside someone's body might be clueless as to what to do (think of CAIS).
Given how the times have changed I can see it happening that she, along with her parents had not been told exactly what she was having even though surgeons or the doctor doing the delivery or a general practitioner knew full well, only that "you need to keep her condition" (which again, parents were not explicitly told about) "a secret or shame will fall upon your family that will be unbearable."

@@amandamandamands I'm intrigued that you managed to focus on just genitals, because puberty entails so, so much more when it comes to the effects it has on the body.
The reason I mentioned this (and deliberately kept genitals out of my reply) is because of the fact that there were concerns I would not be entering boy puberty without help when I was much younger, because of my thyroid breaking down the hormones the hypothalamus and pituitary gland would produce (and would be converted to the right hormones for puberty to start).
Having this checked out was not the result of my reproductive organs not growing, but because I was much shorter than average when it came to my body height (about 15-20 cm below average of age-related peers).
The reason I tagged on your response was because I mistakingly read (possibly between the lines), that someone only found out late in life (which is not uncommon, unfortunately) without mentioning a previous situation of having to take hormones because the body probably other would not have entered puberty, which would include stunted growth, no emotional maturation of their brain (if left untreated, obviously) and menopause like effects of lacking hormones.

Alot of Walsh's complaints, to me, are him telling on himself. Of course, he thinks gay/bi/intersex people aren't worth even knowing exist, which we can extrapolate to him thinking they shouldn't exist. But the bigger thing to me is his obsession with calling drag queens sexual, which tells me he thinks drag queens are sexy. And he should really just accept his feelings and become a better person.

Just my take on pansexual vs bisexual. As a pansexual I don't even need to know anything related to a person's gender or sex, whereas bisexual people I know tend to have like... A "type" of males or a "type" of females that they are interested in. But that's just my personal experience.

I wish there was a book like this when I was growing up. It would have saved me a ton of time & lessed my confusion as I would have figured out that I was bi & ace, as well as potentially been in a safer environment to come out sooner than highschool. Instead I was confused about my sexuality since I like both men & woman but I'm only romantically attracted to them, then my peers started suspecting I was gay so they started acting like something was wrong with me & trying to shame me into being straight, then I figured out that being bi & ace exist, & finally it was safe enough for me to come out to some people such as friends & some family members

I'm just speaking for myself, but I started to develop crushes around 5 or 6, and I started to get crushes on boys and girls. By the time I was 8, I knew I liked both, but when I told my best friend about it, she asked if I was lesbian, I said no, and we were both really confused, and I didn't know how to talk about it because we didn't know what the term for liking both boys and girls was. I'm just saying this book definitely would have helped me understand myself a lot sooner, as well as help my friend understand me a bit better.

Just girls here, but still, I had those crushes too at the same age. My mother thought it was cute (although she did name my sister after my first crush which was f'in bizarre). They always think it's cute when it's hetero. None of them ever try to burn the onesies and t-shirts that promote hetero romance in toddlers. But they just ignore the hypocrisy whenever it's thrown back at them, proving their claims about not being phobic are lies and their arguments are in bad faith.

The few people who really are genuinely worried about kids, etc, always ignore that Queer adults were once Queer kids. We just didn't necessarily have the language to describe these traits about who we have always been.
Speaking as a Queer person who grew up way back in the 80s and 90s, I wish I'd had a book like this to learn these basic concepts to explain what I was experiencing. I identify as Bi because I never even heard of Pan until I was an adult, but it's probably a closer definition technically. I didn't even learn until high school that bisexuality was a thing. Though, I kissed a girl in preschool, long before I kissed any boys. This book definitely would have helped me understand myself better, younger.

There is extremely common heteronormative clothing that is explicitly sexualized and yet considered absolutely appropriate for children to see - the wedding dress. Drag might or might not include references to sexual activity, traditionally heteronormative weddings are much more intrinsically a public celebration and declaration of the sexual behavior of the couple. If you don't worry about children seeing weddings, don't worry about children seeing drag.

Ot used to be a fairly common high school/first year university biology experiment force student to take a check scraping from themselves, put it on a slide stain it, and practice using a microscope by taking their own karyotype. USED TO BE. As a professor I had stated, "A guy asking the lab monitor why he us seeing two Barr bodies is not the way someone needs to find certain facts out." It was just WAY too common for, um... anomalies/mismatches/curious things to show up in large AP/101 classes.
