As a trans woman my experience with Christian love was reason enough to make me an atheist. I used to be an active member of a Christian denomination, I taught Sunday school, directed the Christmas pageant, and represented the congregation at the synod conference . When I came out as trans and decided to transition some in the congregation took it upon themselves to takeover teaching the Sunday school kids , took over my position as a Delagate to the synod , and some even refused to speak to me. I have come to believe that if that is Christian love and how their god wants them to behave then I no longer want any part of it!

I’m afraid that seeing people like Kent Hovind on the Internet has turned me away from religion. I’m not an atheist: I just stopped devoting any runtime to religion because I don’t want to end up being a loon like Hovind. COVID had forced a pause in church attendance anyway, so I just never went back. Because of Hovind and flat Earth people like him.

I've always been atheist and I'm genderfluid but I often find myself still feeling compelled to defend religious people that were not acting hurtfully towards others. Granted this is probably because I empathise with them over the reason they are targeted without opening their mouths. That being that some people feel the need to take issue with members of certain minority religions choosing to wear particular headwear. I feel like they are being attacked for the same stupid reason people see fit to attack me for wearing the "wrong" clothes. So promptly the part of me that is like "Are they harming you in any way?", "Nope thought so, now shut it", comes out. I'll also defend them for honestly answering a provocative question designed to give the asker an excuse to be an ass.
I'm less sympathetic to those that bring it upon themselves by trying to evangelise to random strangers however. If anything I'd be more likely to step in on the side of the person they are pushing at and ask them to demonstrate their claims. But that is just me I don't intentionally go out of my way to engage such people but I do think anyone openly evangelising ideas in public invites a public response and as such I feel obliged to accept that invitation against any expressing bigoted ideas. Those that live and let live honestly I'm good with, even if that means they choose not to interact with some people more than they have to, I at least respect them for recognising they have nothing nice to say and saying nothing. I just hate those that feel the need to project their hate onto others.

an anglican church near me had a covid christmas church service I watched and said that not only were people of other religions welcome, but ATHEISTS as well. Go to a mennonite church and many of them don't even TALK dogma. Although the response to saying "I'm coming out as trans" would likely be "so? Get back to work". But they also made a point of saying the service was held on unceded first nation land. I don't know what religion a 'synod' is, but there are LOTS of denominations not fundamentalist and don't care about gender issues at all.
In fact its embarassing because many ISLAM mosques are not openly friendly and thats less than ONE generation away from fundamentalist countries.

Atheism is the silliest religion ever made. Why would you militantly defend a position as ignorant as the universe and all life in it coming from absolutely nothing. Science has laws. Please learn them.
Weird how modern science agrees more and more with the Bible as time goes by. At the time it was written, the "scholars" of the earth thought the planet was flat. I thank God for Copernicus and Galileo, a couple of Christians, for inching us closer to the truth of God's glorious creation.

I walked into a friend's home, clearly very frustrated. She asked why I was so bothered. I told her I had been in an argument with someone who said the Earth is 5000 years old... She responded, "That's just stupid! The Earth is 7000 years old!!!" My jaw hit the floor and I said, "WHAT???" "It's in the Bible". I asked "Where? I must have missed that bit when I read it multiple times."
She went on to explain that she had never read it and she's not certain the person who told her that had either... And that dinosaurs didn't exist... I walked out not wanting to frustrate myself any further.
My point, is that a large number of "Christians" have never done the reading but a solid chunk of non-believers have. These people are so difficult to have a conversation with. I envy that level of blind faith while at the same time pity that level of ignorance.

Emma I love your vids, I am an American and unfortunately your point of having to remind people from the US that the US is not the entirety of the world rings all too true and even we Americans who have a brain have to remind other Americans that we are not the world and that American views don’t translate to other countries and the reason there are so many countries that have issues with the US is because we try to push our views on them.
I grew up in a Christian home under a Baptist pastor that believed like KH, and forced me to attend a Baptist college, I had been questioning god from the time I was in the 7th grade, and then the first year I was in the Bible College they had a week long conference with Kent and it was the single most important event in my deconversion process, after it I stepped up my questioning of doctrine and with a year and a half was asked to leave the college and church under the guise of a crisis of faith when the truth was not a crisis of faith but rather a total lack of it and being offered not one good reason to have faith. Keep putting them out there and I will watch everyone of them.

OMG the irony of him quoting Mark Twain is so rich. Twain was fiercely opposed to religion, superstition, ignorance, hoaxes, and basically everything Hovind stands for. Among his quotes: "Man is a Religious Animal. He is the only Religious Animal. ... The higher animals have no religion. And we are told that they are going to be left out in the Hereafter. I wonder why? It seems questionable taste."
It's also ironic that he says "a majority of the population voted for Hitler," but then, "it was probably a fraudulent election like Biden." Which is it, Kent?? Did a majority of people vote for Hitler/Biden, or didn't they? Is he conceding Biden won the popular vote?

      Science-Channel, Debunk-Channel and Atheist-Channel

while Telltale covered a looney-pastor who literally is openly planning
to "flood the Office with his Man".
Both TH-camrs added to each other without realizing.
And very notrworthily: Telltale makes Arguments

It's to be condescending; even if in this context it's because she's younger and female. A huge contingent of the population in the American South, male and female, still call each other, esp strangers, "honey," in a friendly and, often, unthinking way. Once I got over the surprise at a complete stranger calling me "honey" or "sweetie," I found it quite endearing.
Hovind isn't from the South, but he's been there long enough to pick up the lingo. I think hearing "creepiness" from Hovind for saying "honey" is projection due to bias or cultural unfamiliarity (Or because he's old? Ooooh, old people are creepy!). He's clearly co-opted the cultural lingo for his own nefarious purposes: belittling this particular opponent and getting under her skin. Unfortunately, he succeeded. Thorne pointed out that this was Hovind's schtick. He even succeeded in getting under AronRa's skin.

Hi Emma. I found your channel through your Sci-Man Dan Video. I like your informed opinions.
I used to be a Latter Day Saint, and have found that the majority of religious hardliners are very intolerant of the scientific community in general. (I at least had a head start where I grew up with a family who had book club membership, and studied a book on the then understood evolution and life style of dinosaurs among other things as well as the Solar System, back when Jupiter had only 12 moons or so we thought at the time). md will poo poo the idea that dinosaurs even existed, despite the fossil record.
A great many number of the people who believe the Earth is flat and that gravity doesn't exist, like to treat the Bible as the only truth in the world. However if you look at mythologies around the world, you realise that a lot of the stories were built to rationalise the things that happened in their part of the world and were truth to them at the time, until other religions stepped in and took over normally through conquering nations and then forcing their views on others. Christianity has a bad track record on this, with the Inquisition targeting people who refuse to think their way and wiping them out. Likewise forcing religion on the peoples of the world during the various colonisation efforts.
People with that mindset will never accept change even when proven, and will always twist the narrative to their worldview.
Me, I'm still getting used to the fact that the majority of dinosaurs had feathers. Proof that as scientific understanding increases that change is accepted.
Very enjoyable video, as was you MLM Body Shop video. Keep up the good work and don't let the ignoramuses grind you down.

Good on you for putting your thoughts out there! My education is in anthropology. Darwin/Wallace evolutionary processes are what give explanatory power to what we see in the fossil record (e.g., early hominids to H. sapiens sapiens). You hit the nail on the head when you said that people like Mr. Kent Hovind and Mr. Matt Powell do not understand the time scales involved. That's why Lamarck's theory of change never worked - he assumed that change happened within an individual's life, rather than through each generation over very large time scales. Wallace and Darwin were aware of recent geological discoveries that established these long time scales, and why their theory works so well. By contras, there is no model or evidence (the bible does not count) of young earth.
They also do not understand that evolution is not a unilinear or progressive process. Evolution is as simple as whatever traits help a population survive ecological change persist and those that don't are left behind. Indeed, evolution can be cyclical. There is no component of evolution that says that organisms must become more complex or lead to a higher order. In fact, very simple animals like the Tardigrade are far better at surviving than humans, and will almost certainly outlast human beings.
I've been frustrated by these people my whole life. Giving them more information will not change their minds. A common trait of theirs is deficient cognition and awareness, combined with personality and enculturation that makes them susceptible to this way of thinking. Embracing such a world view is a way for them to feel in control of their lives in an increasingly complex and scary world, provides comfort through solidarity, and the opportunity to feel smart and important by standing up to intelligent people and believing that they are special because they see the truth of it all. Unless these people want to make a change, the likely never will. Meanwhile we need to do better with education and methods/services to help susceptible people from falling into these cults.
P.S. If you ever want to learn an amazing story, look up the story of Alfred Wallace and how he independently developed evolution by natural selection. He was a crazy guy.

A good evolutionary item: look up the history of horses and donkeys. The two split, but if they mate they produce a mule. That is their close enough to produce offspring, but that offspring is infertile because of the different number of chromosomes in the two parent species.
But this is an example of one animal giving birth to a different animal due to selection. It's usually artificial selection, being that humans do it, but it could happen in the wild as well.
A mule is not a horse and a mule is not a donkey. Now he would probably complain about the fact that it's sterile, but that's part of natural selection.

Love your input re the conversation around all of this, Emma. You commented that your response went on longer than you expected, and that it was frustrating. Yep, that's his tactic and many others experience the same- Hovind lays on the BS so thick because debunking each lie takes up more time than the lie. The firehose of shit method. Keep up your good work!

While it is well understood that Hovind knows that he is lying, far fewer of Hovind's critics understand that Hovind's fans also know that he is lying, and love him for it. It's not a bug, it's a feature.

This got me thinking about whether Hitler was a christian. Apparently some people call him a kind of christian, but other people call him a neo-pagan, or say that nazism itself was a social darwinist state religion. His beliefs would be such giga-heresy because of their denial of jesus' power to redeem that I think it would be less confusing to think of his religion as a new one. I think he only liked the aesthetics, not the core christian tenets.

Emma. Yeah I have been battling with YEC and Christians in general for years now and can relate to your frustration. Unfortunately, there is no shortage of ignorant deluded folks spewing garbage and nonsense on TH-cam. Thankfully there are folks like you, Aron Ra, Matt Dillahunty, Seth Andrews, Sam Harris and etc. that will go toe to toe with these folks. So bravo!! You are very well spoken and really have knack for cutting through the BS.
    Cheers

It's actually hilarious that the big point he's holding onto in that video is "an overwhelming majority of the American people, polled 8 years ago, believed in evolution and not creationism." Like, why is he bragging about that? Lol

Nothing says "Christian love" like "Whack an Atheist Wednesday!"
If there's one thing I've noticed a LOT about apologists, or whatever Hovind is, it's that they just lie... constantly. Lie about whoever their debating or talking about, lie about the facts. Didn't realize it when I was a believer, but now that I'm on the otherside I feel sick sometimes remembering I used to look up to these people.

Mr Hovind's approach is deliberately antagonistic - trolling an opponent makes them angry, at which point they lose their cool and can lose the argument, even if they are right; this even happens in your response when you flip him the bird and later tell him to 'f*** off' - although I understand your frustration, this is what exactly what he wants. He starts by deliberately calling you 'Honey' because he knew you would react. It's why e.g. boxers sh*t-talk their opponent before a match. Unfortunately, he has a dogmatic following that respond to this.

Being an American and familiar with southern U.S. lingo/mannerisms, I will let you in on a secret. He is using "honey" in a condescending way. It's kind of like a passive-aggressive condescending term most of the time in the south. Not sure if you have that sort of thing across the pond.
