    Thanks! I didn't know they couldn't go in the sun at first, put in shade, got it. Good to know not to bury the root deeper than the root area and not cover much of the flesh (another youtuber said to put it 3" down in soil, YIKES!). I wouldn't have known, so I watched your video. Your dragon fruit look so healthy and happy!

      I follow the exact same steps as above. Having said that, when I've bought commercially grown, potted up, plants at garden centers I have pulled them apart (in the interests of scientific discovery) and seen that they do, indeed, place them a few inches into the soil. So, there seems to be more to the story, but I'm not sure what it is. Having said that, I'll keep following the technique in this video as it is logical and works for me.

    Just planted almost a dozen cuttings following your advice. Fingers crossed I get some growth. In California but not close to ocean so extremely hot these days. I used cuttings from a plant that I’ve had for awhile but I had no clue about all of the rules to grow and get flowers. Thank you for your videos.

    Is it getting too cold to grow from cuttings now in So CAL, or wait for spring? What will be good months?
    How often do you water?
    Some people recommend cutting 1-2 inches off the bottom, dry them for a week, and to give more surface for root to grow.

    Richard, when are you going to publish a book in DF? Question, does the DF get nurishment from the air roots if you wet them with the H2O/ fertilizer mix that you feed the plant with. My trellises are 4in square pvc wraped with burlap, the plants love it, they root up and grow fast. I started with four trellises back in OCT, i am starting on my 14th this week.

    Thank you for this content. I was given a dragon fruit plant that needs serious rehabilitation. It is scarred and yellowing and was tied to a stick for so long the tie cut into the branch a bit. After seeing this video I think I will take some healthy pieces off this unhealthy looking plant and try to root them just in case the plant itself dies. I find that sometimes taking care of a dying plant seems to hasten it's death. Maybe I can still salvage a cutting or two.

    • @GraftingDragonFruit
      @GraftingDragonFruit  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I will go back to check up on them every 2-3 days to see if the top soil is 1 inch dry from the top. If it is, then I will water it. As long as you check on it frequent enough youll get the feel of when and how often you'll need to water them. Once the shoot reaches 1 inch then you know its time to take them out to the sun and the process was successful!

    This is So new to me.... My D.F. plant is 1 yr old, in 2 weeks. Some fingers are 12" long and very thick. I repotted it today, the entire plant. There are 18 'fingers' in a 12" pot. Lots of room in there. I used Miracle Gro and it's Healthy! It has soft but sharp thorns at every ripple. Do I have to replant Each finger in its own pot? And When? When do the thorns fall off? Only 1 of my fingers has a double plant (like a tiny waistline, another growing on top. A Double decker). Your site is Very Informative so I Subscribed to you... And I'll see you on Instagram too. 👍👌 Thanks!

    Hi, Love your videos. I am in Melbourne, Australia. Unfortunately, a strong wind removed my frost cover for my dragon fruit whilst I was away. I came home to my dragon fruit being in various stages of rotting. It was rotting from the ground up and very mushy. I have removed it and cut it back to healthy pieces. I am going to plant all of my pieces and wanted to check if you use normal potting mix or a cacti potting mix? I wasn't sure being that it is a cacti. Also, do you have any other recommendations to successfuly grow dragon fruit in an area with cold winters?

    • @GraftingDragonFruit
      @GraftingDragonFruit  5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Thank you, you can transfer them into bigger pots as soon as you see a new growth comes out. I would let the shoot grow 1 inch before planting them into the bigger pots. You definitely can plant them into bigger pots right off the back, but... that just means you need to water that bigger pot with more water to have the soil moist. I prefer to grow them in small pots, save some water, and when the roots are nice, healthy, and big then that's when I would transfer them into a bigger pot. They will be more ready to spread their roots to make them selves feel at home in their new area. Hope this helps!

    • @GraftingDragonFruit
      @GraftingDragonFruit  5 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Hi Luweeh, it’s okay to plant in Japan if you can have weather conditions around 65F-85F. They thrive best in these conditions. If it gets under 38F their flesh can rot and die. If weather gets over 95F+ for a long period of time they can get sun burnt and die. You’ll just need to use shade cloths to control the heat if it does get too hot.

    And is potting mix better then using cactus garden soil ?

    • @GraftingDragonFruit
      @GraftingDragonFruit  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Stoney Guerrero, I’m glad you found the video! For watering, since they don’t have any roots yet. Once a week of watering is more than enough for now until they develop roots. A good indication is if you poke your soil and it’s dried 1 inch from the top. Then it’s a good sign to water again. Once they root then watering twice a week is ideal. But feel that your soil is dry a bit before watering.
      Potting mix is better because they are well drained soil. Cactus mixture hold moisture and don’t drain well which can cause rotting if unaware. Find soil potting mix that have perlite it helps with the draining. Fox farm ocean forest is an excellent brand. But they are just a bit costly for a bag.

    Richard, I planted four stems or cuttings that I got from Amazon. Unfortunately, when I received the cuttings, there is no label of what kind or variety, although they look healthy. It will take about 5 weeks for roots to grow before I can transfer them in one big pot, indoor. Yes, indoor because I'm from Chicago. I will place the plant by the window where it can get some sun. We'll see what happens. Thoughts?

    My dragon fruit is just all these 3-4 inch long growths. I didn't know what it wanted. I'm afraid my cuttings won't get big or strong enough but I think even if it's awkward I'll get a larger plant to get trained up. I'm in the north so I hope once I get my grow lights out I can get into this.

    What variety of dragon fruit do you recommend for someone trying to grow for the first time? As well as cold hardiness for living in northeast USA lol but can bring inside and not be that cold. I was looking at Wallace ranch site and was debating Maria Rosa, dark star, and Robles red?

      Are they flowering? If so, you may need to hand pollinate them from a different variety

    Do you think it’s beneficial to cut the cuttings at the base so that the planted area is wider? Also, have you done any tests of using rooting hormones versus not using rooting hormone? 🤔

    • @GraftingDragonFruit
      @GraftingDragonFruit  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hi Ronnie, if you have a healthy cutting they will root within 2-3 weeks. I would only use rooting hormone if there was a cutting that didn't look too well and needed the boost. But even with the rooting hormones on the healthy cuttings. They still root within 2 weeks so its not much of a difference. I recommend saving money and just let them naturally do it. But if you have a cutting that looks on the verge of rooting. The hormone will definitively give it some help.

    Will they root in the winter? Like right now? NorCal average day temp is 65 degrees.

    Hi Richard, I am a newie and very excited of learning more of dragon fruits. I enjoyed all of your introduction videos, sooo much to learn. You have make it so fun and interesting:) I just brought some (American Beauty, Sugar Dragon, Vietnamese Red & White, and Purple Haze) cuttings on line, and should be arriving within a few weeks. I noticed that you used plastic bags to plant your young cuttings. Is there a reason for this?

      To trap the evaporation to create basically a terrarium of warmth and moisture to best re create its primary climate and give itself its own watercycle

    Dear Richard:
    I would love a viideo showing us how to test the sweetness of the fruit.
    I hear that the measure scale is in BRIX. I do not know how to spell it.
    Is it a device we can buy. Maybe through Amazon?
    Many thanks. I am Fernando from Seville, Spain.

      Hi Fernando Garcia, I most definitely will be making a video on how to test the sweetness level in a fruit. Its a Brix Meter that is used to measure the scale of the sugar level in a fruit. Once I make the video ill add a link in my description of the one i use so you can purchase the correct one. I'll have that video up next week for you! Keep watching and look out for the video. I have some Dragon Fruits that i'm curious how sweet they are this year so i'll be testing them. :)

    My mother plant started sprouting more cuttings, one is branching 3-4 inches off the mother plant. Do I have to remove the growth/cuttings or just let them grow like you have the bigger ones growing up on the wood?? Thank you so much

      @GraftingDragonFruit  ปีที่แล้ว

      You don’t have to remove them, just steer the growth
