Feb 1 - March 5 That's sun low in the sky time = warm light spectrum. Also happens in autumn. Why they fruit at those times. Also how you get long day and short day crops. I get that's kinda advanced for the average hobby gardener though.
One thing i've always wondered about, can you graft dragon fruit cactus to other cactus especies? cause there are other cactus especies that grow vertical trunks way easier, so they could be coupled to make a dragon fruit tree without support, like a sawaro as the "trunk" or others.
AWESOME! As you know, almost every video labelled "complete growing guide" on youtube just shows you how to plant something (usually seeds). Planting stuff is the easy part. I want to know how to take care of it afterwards! Your videos are so good at showing that. You know.... the important part! Thanks!
My dragonfruit journey began during the pandemic. We bought a colombiana fruit from a local farmer and was absolutely blown away by how sweet it was. I saved some seeds and germinated some in some water. Ended up with about 100 seedlings😂🤦🏽♂️ I grew stuff but not to the level that I am now. From veggies, to dragonfruit, to fruit trees, to kratky hydroponics, etc. Any old food safe container has a plant in it😂 My wife thinks I’m nuts. I'm really glad you threw everything into one video! I've got an unknown variety of dragonfruit that a neighbor had set out on the curb with a "Free" sign on it. I nursed it back to health and now it's gone crazy with side shoots (although it's starting to grow out thru the top of the trellis). Guess I know what I'll be pruning tomorrow! Thanks

My wife's friend passed on a puny little dragonfruit start for me several years ago. That thing did nothing until I transplanted it into a bigger pot with fresh soil and really took off. I moved it inside to protect it during the cooler months, watching it develop. Then one of the cats ate it. I tried finding a new plant, but nobody in the area sold one, not even the "exotic" plant guy. I have some dried seeds, so I'll try again that way.
I have heard that the stems of those grafted cacti (green stem with brightly colored top) are actually dragonfruit. They TH-camr I watched bought some at the dollar store, pulled the top graft off, and grew the stem into a blooming dragonfruit.
You guys did me in! Here in NC and I decided 'why not try dragonfruit'? So I took one from the grocery store, washed off the pulp the best I could and put it in a couple of small, flat trays. Great guide. Thought I would comment on tipping plants.Apical dominance is the term. The growing shoot inhibits the growth of laterals. The further from the tip, the more likely laterals are to sprout. Think of a pine tree. It has very high apical dominance. As the growing tip moves upwards, it allows the lateral branches to extend producing a very uniform pyramid shape. Removal of the tip will remove the apical dominance allowing laterals to sprout. :)

I grew some dragonfruit from seeds from store bought fruit. It's going slow and a lot of the seedlings were lost along the way. Year 3 and my biggest is about a ft tall but I don't get enough sun throughout the day for faster growth.
Kevin you are an plus in gardening. A question I live near Palm Springs. My dragon fruit did nothing for 3 years. Is it because of the heat that reaches 115 to sometimes 120. Often 115 ?

Hey, I was wondering if you have any experience growing dragonfruit cuttings late in the season? I might want to try growing it indoors through the winter
Cacti are so easy to propagate. I grow grow various types of prickly pear cactus. Some are extremely thorny, some are nearly thornless. Some have the typical round pads, some have elongated pads with scalloped edges. All have edible fruit. With the prickly pear cactus, the pads are also eaten. In Mexican cuisine, they are called nopales or nopalitos. Edit: To propagate prickly pear cactus I break off a young pad near the top of the plant, then simply poke the broken off end into a pot of moist soil. The kind of soil doesn't matter. You do need to make sure the pot drains properly. After that, the cactus plant is almost zero maintenance. You can keep it in a pot or you can transplant it in the ground.
Ive watched the entire video serie and have some knowledge about it. My question is: could I grow them even in the Czech republic? I know it’s not the best climate but my idea is that I’d move the plant out the house when it’s hot outside and keep it inside during autumn and winter.
I've got a dark star variety dragonfruit growing - I started it from cuttings at the beginning of October 2023 and it produced its first fruit 6 months later. I notice you said that the flower will open up in 30 to 35 days. Well, from my own experience with my dragonfruit plant, it took 2 weeks for the buds to fully open up. To be specific, I first noticed the bud on March 27th. It fully opened and was pollinated on April 10th. I harvested it on May 13th. So, 2 weeks to bloom, and 5 weeks or so until harvest. I don't know if the variety has anything to do with that.
So now I want to grow dragon fruit! I have an affinity for indoor tropical and cacti. This just seems like the right next step! I live in Ontario canada 6b. Are there any special considerations for indoor over wintering and shorter outdoor season that you and Richard can suggest?
@@EnuffsEnuff318 Just searched it up. Thank you. He also covered mycelium and fungi a tiny bit in "What happens when you bury old logs...". I wonder if it'd be worth growing mushrooms along side other crops to help the soil, given that they're symbiotic.
I’ve been waiting for another dragonfruit video. I started a couple of years ago when a friend gave me a few cuttings. I saw it as amble opportunity to test how badly I could abuse the poor thing till it died… which it hasn’t, so figuring out what to do next has had me sitting over here like Plankton from SpongeBob when he pops out of that fake dollar bill: “I dunno… I never thought I’d get this far”. Now it’s time for me to do this for-realzies, but I actually have no idea where to buy cuttings.
My cuttings rooted and they were doing really well and I built a couple trellis's and got them transplanted. Now within a couple months later, I noticed some of the tops are getting yellow. I don't get a lot of sun where I'm at so I know it's most likely not sunburn just wondering if I may be watering them too much now which may be causing this? And is it best just to tip them now even though some have not reached the top yet?
This is probably the coolest plant I have ever watched a guide on! There goes ANOTHER thing on my future greenhouse grow list (by future I mean in 10 years when I have money 🙃)
Can one grow these indoors in the Vermont winter? I grow figs in pots and put them in dark place for the winter. But want to grow pitajayas indoors and outdoors in summer.
i accidentally bought a bought a dragogn fruit plant thinking it was a regular cactus from the clearence section of walmart in 2021 as a small gift for my husband. a friend told me it was in fact dragon fruit so i started caring for it as such but kinda gave up on the idea of getting actual fruit from it. until this year!! it start growing like crazy out of no where and i feel like its about to start producing flowers.
I do LOVE DF. I watch ever video I can on it. I'm in my third year growing and no fruit yet. many of my branches are about half way back down to the planter. I keep the branches sparse... and I just cant get any fruits... maybe it's too thin...
I got a cutting ftm someone. Had it growing for years !!! I get rewarded with a beautiful white flower always wondered if I wud get fruit frm it. Replanted it 2weeks ago...can u or anyone advise.thnx
Hey, one way to find out! 😂 But in all seriousness, there is a safe way to find if plants are edible. Start by breaking it open and putting the juice onto a soft spot of your skin, like the wrist or elbow. If there’s a reaction, instantly that’s a no plant. Next step is a small taste of the juice. Wait at least 24 hours between each step. Basically take small steps like this with the food, trying it in different ways until you feel confident. I’d bet you probably can especially cooked up like nopales. This is how I was taught to try foods in a survival situation.
Thanks to Richard from youtube.com/@GraftingDragonFruit for stopping by the Epic Homestead to drop his knowledge for you!

Hi. Nice video. I want to ask how if i make a cutting from a young seedling sprout?
That was fantastic.
So now I want to grow dragon fruit! I have an affinity for indoor tropical and cacti. This just seems like the right next step! I live in Ontario canada 6b. Are there any special considerations for indoor over wintering and shorter outdoor season that you and Richard can suggest?
I save cuttings from previous season pruning and just rest them on a shaded section in the yard. They'll root.
Is there a way to workout what type of Dragon Fruit plant you have? Are the flowers different?
Have you ever tried growing mushrooms? Would love to see a video on growing mushrooms at home.

Best of luck in your garden !
Actually if you search his channel, he did do at least one Shiitaki video a few years back.
@@EnuffsEnuff318 Just searched it up. Thank you. He also covered mycelium and fungi a tiny bit in "What happens when you bury old logs...". I wonder if it'd be worth growing mushrooms along side other crops to help the soil, given that they're symbiotic.
How big is your metal container? Where can I find it? Thanks
Great Video.
This is probably the coolest plant I have ever watched a guide on! There goes ANOTHER thing on my future greenhouse grow list (by future I mean in 10 years when I have money 🙃)
What fertilizer for dragon fruits please? Or top soil only
Thank you so much
Do
They said Fox Farms Ocean Forest. Not a regular succulent soil because it's a subtropical cacti and requires more water than regular cacti
Can one grow these indoors in the Vermont winter? I grow figs in pots and put them in dark place for the winter. But want to grow pitajayas indoors and outdoors in summer.
Thank you for the video!!
lol if I pound my stick will the dragon fruit god appear at my place? You guys are hilarious! 😂😂😂
i accidentally bought a bought a dragogn fruit plant thinking it was a regular cactus from the clearence section of walmart in 2021 as a small gift for my husband. a friend told me it was in fact dragon fruit so i started caring for it as such but kinda gave up on the idea of getting actual fruit from it. until this year!! it start growing like crazy out of no where and i feel like its about to start producing flowers.
Thanks so much for the video, appreciated
I do LOVE DF. I watch ever video I can on it. I'm in my third year growing and no fruit yet. many of my branches are about half way back down to the planter. I keep the branches sparse... and I just cant get any fruits... maybe it's too thin...

Useful tips...👍
My BIGGEST dragon fruit question, that I've yet to find a satisfactory answer for: Are the arms edible, like the pads on a nopale cactus?
Hey, one way to find out! 😂 But in all seriousness, there is a safe way to find if plants are edible. Start by breaking it open and putting the juice onto a soft spot of your skin, like the wrist or elbow. If there’s a reaction, instantly that’s a no plant. Next step is a small taste of the juice. Wait at least 24 hours between each step. Basically take small steps like this with the food, trying it in different ways until you feel confident. I’d bet you probably can especially cooked up like nopales. This is how I was taught to try foods in a survival situation.
Does it matter how tall you trellis post is? Can you make it "dwarf"(3ft above soil) and have the same results?
