Three years out of chemo and my stick straight hair came back in ringlets. Now it's about half and half and I keep trimming the ends to eventually removed the damaged curls. My once silky hair came back dry, damaged frizzy, totally fried. Slathering on coconut oil, covering it with a damp hot towel then shower cap for a few hours can help a lot. The gray is coming in but at my age (61) I'm sure it was going to happen sooner or later anyway. Just so glad to have hair again! Hang in there ladies. We're alive and we aren't alone in our battle.
This just brings me to tears, as my mom used to read magazines with Joan & her story in them each time she went for her oncology appointments...we would have discussions about Joan's/your success. When my mom gave up her fight (from Triple Negative), she was told by her oncologist that most don't make it through that number of chemos...she was positive and determined...she wanted to say that she had given it her all. I believe that she could have had success, but she was just tired. As multiple members of my family (including, currently, my now 5 year-old) have entered the ring, I have witnessed (as a granddaughter, child for both parents, and, most recently as a parent) firsthand the bravery called upon by those in the battle. I have nothing but admiration and compassion for all involved. Be encouraged and Godspeed!
2 years after chemo. Front hair is a little wavy, curls at the back. Also I got more hair than before chemo. More volume! Before I had almost straight and flat hair.
Lol, I finished Chemo this summer and after two months it is growing back. The curl pattern is normal and a welcome site. I did have more grey than ever before but after it gets some length, a Henna treatment will help. Just thankful not to be bald anymore.
As much as I like my 3 wigs, Iam glad to have my own hair back. Ive always had naturally curly wavy hair, but THIS is ridiculous 🤣🤣🤣 I feel like a walking brillo pad! So its hello curl cream!! Lol.
My chemo curls are out of control. If I don't put gel and hairspray on my hair, my style is like a big sponge. My last treatment was in July of 2016, so I've got about six months worth of growth. So grateful that it's growing back no matter how curly it is. :) Thanks for sharing, Joan.
Jacqueline try scrunching in 'coconut curls' by OGX. When dry, use some (hair product) coconut oil- use that one sparingly. Those, along with a diffuser and a little spray will define and keep curls together and not frizzy. My oncologist has also been giving me prenatal vitamins. And my hair came back darker, but was already curly before chemo.
And here's a cool tidbit- hair has a memory, so if you don't fight the curls, it may stay curly- but do you have any idea what women pay to get beautiful curls like ours?? A lot. I get compliments on my curls every day, and have always loved them. Another cool curly fact: scalps with curly hair stay cooler because the hair isn't flat and allows better air flow.
After chemo you just want to be normal again, but it takes time. My hair came back curly and grey with some white. Last week-after a year since she shaved it off for me-my hairdresser gave me a little cut to improve its shape. I made the mistake of wanting a color change. She obliged but warned me that it was too short to add highlights. I ended up with a solid brown. I should have stayed natural until I could get highlights. I’m struggling with my fragile fingernails too. I recommend Flexi Nail or CND Rescue Rx and a lot of patience. Anything else just makes them worse. It’s a gradual improvement. ❤
Oh boy do I ever have chemo curls! Seven months post chemo and I have about 2” of hair if pulled taut. It’s thick with tight, tight curls. I can not straighten it so I wear it curly. I’ve been trimming up the sides a bit to keep it under control. Sometimes I feel like I look like a middle-aged man but other times, I kind of like it! It’s definitely easy to manage when I don’t fight it.!
I lost my hair in 2016, and 2018, it came back very dark, straight and weak. I had a Car T (transplant) 2022 with chemo and now I have new curly ringlets. I did try blond highlights and it made the quality of hair brittle. Therefore I am embracing the curls and natural color. My hair improved after I began using Olagplex - their protein treatment, plus the "Curly Girl Method" (no sulfates, drying alcohols or silicones) has helped a lot. I recommend it, my hair looks fairly healthy and grows well.
I'm 5 years out from chemo, always had poker straight hair, grew back curly, but now 5 years later, it's half curly, half straight. Some strands have beautiful ringlets, some are just bent, and the front is back to poker straight. I think it's this way for life now. It's just a mess. LOL
The same here. After chemo 2 years. Front hair is almost straight, back is curly or wavy. Also I got more hair than I had before the treatment. More volume for sure!
I have chemo curls but i didn't have cancer. I had sepsis making my hair and nails fall out. My hair was straight before and now it's curly and full. Honestly, I'm loving something different.
I had chemo and lost all my hair, and now it came back real curly. I can't get use to it but everyone tell me i good great with curly hair. I guess it just a matter of getting used to it.
I'm 10 months post chemo and my once wavy/straight hair is beautiful tight curls, I actually love them even if they grow more bushy and 'electrified' with each day after wash day 😅 I like it a bit wild and messy it's my badge of honour ❤ I hope the curls stay but for now I'm not cutting it until it grows out a lot longer (I previously had very short hair or buzzcut for years so it'd a change for me)
I am 11 months post quimo. My hair was very fine and straight now is fine wavy and mostly gray. I am thankful for this hair. I only wish I know how to comb it without damaging it because I want to let it grow long again.
My hair was dead straight could never hold a curl but after chemo my hair came back as a fuzz ball. All curly and so so much thicker. It’s been 4 years since it grew back and it’s grown to the middle of my back now how I use to have it but it’s so wavy and curly still thick even after a few hair cuts and I had it thinned it out a couple of times but still is thick and it’s grows so fast. I just want my straight hair back because I can’t even have my hair down anymore and it’s just all over the place. 😔🥴
Like a lot of you I had straight hair and now have the ringlets you are talking about. The texture is pretty much the same as before and the color was mostly white. As a 70+ lady, anything darker would have really been strange. Still getting used to not being able to style it, but I'm very happy to ditch the hats and scarves.
My hair first started coming back in and at first it was grey, it did turn into a mousy brown. Curls, I wish. It was so flat and fine, I had to get a perm. I wish I had curls
Month out for chemo I had the thinnest hair after my hair grew back it's it's soooo curly and thick so the comlepte opposite I'm happy about my hair to I don't really mind it's nit fully grown I think the curls will drop a bit though I hope it dosnt
@@janina873 yepp it did , you just have to take care of them i I didn’t which is probably the reason I’m trying the salvage the curls but it’s just become wavy now
My hair was naturally curly Now I look like a lamb or a poodle with a head band. I got it trim , shaped yesterday for the first time. Mine looks so fuzzy… my hair dresser puta mask on and left it. This morning I just broke the curls some and it doesn’t look as frizzy. We shall see.
In my case I feel that it came back less curly and lots of grey hair, but to be true I was always dying my hair. What I noticed toughn is that I got more hair m👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼. However, I had av relapse and I'm getting chemo again, it's the type which doesn't make you lose your hair but a lot a hair is falling, so let's see what happens this second time 🙏🏼💪🏼
I had chemo and radiation for breast cancer. I never fully lost all my hair. I cut it off when I started losing hair after the first chemo treatment. It was trying to grow back after that. I never had a really bald head. I'm almost a year out from chemo and my hair is curly (I had straight before), but I don't have the tight "chemo curls" that a lot of people do. I guess I'm a little strange. Anybody else with the same thing? I look for those type of videos and don't find them. They all talk about really tight frizzy curls!!
I normally have straight hair after chemo it came back a afro I kid you not before chemo I had hair down to my backside it started to fallout so my daughter shaved my head . it was heart breaking because I'm old school and a woman's hair is her glory. I loved my long hair and have felt naked ever since. Now don't get me wrong I have so many reason's to be thankful, GRATEFUL TO BE BEATING THE C-WORD! But I would be a fibber if I said I didn't miss my hair! it's so curly that if it's not wet or moused and or gel. I literally look like I stuck my finger in a light socket lol.... my question is when& if will i get my straight hair back!?
My mom is not getting any new growth and it’s been over 4 years she is very self conscious about it she has bald spots and I just wish I could help her style it
My last chemo was Oct 4th 2016 and my hair has come back about 10 times thinner. It's like 50 strands. I literally look like I have a few threads on my shoulders. It's quite embarrassing. It came back darker, it's okay. But, I have to put in a ponytail or pin it up. I big ears and I'm used to covering them up. It just doesn't feel right. I hope something better comes back. I'm tired of waiting.
I’m a black woman with a natural hair! My hair use to be curly but now it is bone straight. It looks like I have a relaxer. It won’t curl for anything.
Omg I was looking for a comment like this my hair was 4c I’m mixed and now my hair still won’t go back I think it’s down to the chemo as a child or medication I’ve been on over the years from my tumour. Also wondering if it will come back if I cut it off but if it’s down to the body probably not😢
Five months out from chemo. Hair used to be brown (w some gray) and straight. Now it's salt and pepper w tons of kinky curls. I don't know what to do with my chemo curls! (I'm 57 and always had straight hair. )
Will your hair grow back if you are still taking chemo... I have cancer for the Second time first time my hair didn't come out but this time it did I see a little hair growing back... so will my hair grow back while am having chemo?
Joan looks great but she's in her early 70's now and at the time she made this video she was late 60's. There is no way her hair came back light or blonde. It's ok, Joan, we are all getting up there. I wish you the best.

I had to shave my head today. Ugh. Good news is that I only have 3 more treatments left. Wahoooooo!
I have a friend who is Asian and after chem her hair came back CURLY. it’s so beautiful now years after

No chemo curls here. I had really curly blonde hair, and now it's straight and the silver/grey you mentioned. Ugh!!! 5 months post chemo.

Will your hair grow back if you are still taking chemo... I have cancer for the Second time first time my hair didn't come out but this time it did I see a little hair growing back... so will my hair grow back while am having chemo?
I don't want my hair to grow back curly. :-(
Yes.
Ughhhh..yep..chemo curls.
its funny my wife's on chemo and i am pulling my hair out
Yes.. my hair is insane... its grey and dark and sooooo curly... like little spaghetti 0s all over my head. omg. not cute
Did it loosen over time?
I am still having Herceptin infusions. My hair is now curly and GRAY. When can I dye it? Do I have to wait until I am finished with infusions?
